where we had numerous triple digits yesterday. we have inland areas now at 92 livermore 94 danville and concord 96 at brentwood and up in the north bay, 96 at saint helena. so it's a bit cooler and much more comfortable as the marine layer has started to rebuild and is giving us some cooling relief. but it won't last long. we are still in a heat wave, a severe heat wave as a matter of fact. so the excessive heat warning we've been talking about the last several days remains in effect until 11 p.m. wednesday. and let's move along. take a look at what's happening at the coast where the marine layer is building a little bit. we've got a nice cooling onshore flow, high pressure that had compressed the marine layer the last few days is edging eastward. so that's allowing the marine layer to build a little bit of a stronger cooling influence. so tomorrow will be well, just about as mild as today was still warm enough but not super hot. and tuesday will be even cooler inland. even it will may suggest that the heat wave is ending, but that is not the case. look at wednesday. temperatures bounce right back into the triple digits in most

inland areas on wednesday and thursday, even hotter 102 to about 110 across the inland areas. i'll have a complete look at the accuweather seven day forecast in a few minutes. j.r. >> spencer, thank you so much. we look forward to that many folks across the bay area are waiting for this hot spell to end. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is live in sonoma, where people are getting pretty good at beating the heat. cornell right j.r. >> yeah, it seems like everybody has a plan to outsmart the weather. i got to say it feels a bit cooler today but still too warm for many. sonoma plaza here is a bit empty today and the bay area is still coping with extreme heat when a new love approached you, about 100 people braved the hot weather to enjoy a free concert on sonoma plaza. shady spots were taken, but seats in the direct sun were up for grabs. >> we noticed that air conditioning almost nonstop running albert and amy lynn are

visiting sonoma from los altos, armed with water and a fan to keep cool. >> they want the long heat wave to be over already. >> it's too hot for me. yeah, yeah, it's like like a steaming hot and you just feel dizzy all the time. you really cannot do anything. >> water misters are keeping guests cool at the roach family vineyards tasting room. it's been pretty darn hot. tom dusenberry says the extreme heat has been tough for his staff, but hasn't kept wine lovers away. we do have an air conditioned tap room in the back where we're able to accommodate some of the guests, but it's amazing. >> a lot of people just kind of tough it out and they they want to sit in the in the heat in the east bay, thirsty dogs are hydrating near a hiking trail at walnut creek, open space. >> the area is reopening this weekend after being closed for several days due to high fire danger. rick isaacs is getting an early walk in with his dog. >> the real danger of the height of the high temperatures is not

wave across the bay area. we have a list of local cooling centers that offer resources to help you and your family. to fi, head to abc seven news. it's a big travel day, with people returning home from the 4th of july and their 4th of july holiday trips. you can see the line of cars in this video from chp posted this from the tahoe area earlier this afternoon. there were traffic jams along interstate 80 and soda springs, and at stretches of i 50 near state line. the chp is conducting a maximum enforcement operation with additional officers out until midnight. firefighters in the sierra foothills are making progress on the pay fire burning near highway 50. the fire burned 77 acres east of placerville yesterday, and now forward progress has stopped. containment is at 5. there are still mandatory evacuations around the placerville airport. no one's been hurt. and the fire

hasn't damaged any buildings at this point, crews are getting a better handle on the french fire burning in mariposa county near yosemite national park. containment has improved to 60. it's burned more than 900 acres since it began on thursday. several evacuation orders were lifted for firefighters have been injured. michael jackson's neverland ranch is threatened by the lake fire, which is burning out of control in santa barbara county, started friday afternoon in the los padres national forest, it has scorched more than 16,000 acres, so far. homes are at risk and evacuation orders have been expanded. developing news all of southeast texas is under a tropical storm or hurricane warning, with beryl bearing down. the powerful storm is expected to slam into the gulf coast tomorrow. beryl is the earliest category five atlantic hurricane in history,

and has already killed at least seven people in the caribbean's windward islands. here's courtney fisher from our sister station in houston. >> the island of matagorda is about 80 miles southwest of houston. in the last hour or so, the winds have really picked up. we have seen the waves become choppier, but people around here are used to this and a lot of them are staying put. in the final hours before beryl hits. >> i've got one more. so i got the last door. >> thomas davis boards up the last few windows, one of the last on his street to leave. >> i would stay if we didn't have the two girls. i would definitely stay. >> staying is the norm for a lot of folks in matagorda. >> we've ridden them out here like floyd and marguerite ceruti. we're planning on staying here. >> we're planning on watching the astros win and then welcoming beryl in calm, unbothered. >> even as the skies turn dark. because in this laid back beach town dotted with fishing camps, fewer than 500 people, you get

expect today to be the busiest day ever for tsa screenings. the previous record was set just weeks ago on june 23rd. american airlines is expected to transport the most passengers on any single day in its history. an anticipated 775,000 customers will be flying with them today. wow. for nasa volunteers who spent more than a year sealed inside a simulated mars habitat in texas have finally ended their mission. the crew was confined for 378 days inside the 1700 square foot habitat. their experiments were focused on nutrition and the impact on

their performance. nasa says the collected data will help the space agency as it prepares to return to the moon, and on mars. join right now by spencer christian that's a lot of time. it is. sometimes i feel like we're in the studio for a few hundred days here, but it feels that way sometimes, especially with ongoing live coverage of breaking news. >> right? i trust the temperature is comfortable. >> i would hope so. and it's not comfortable everywhere today. >> no it's not, but cooler than yesterday. so here's a look at why it's cooler than yesterday. we've got a return of the marine layer and this time it's a vigorous one. not a little wimpy marine layer like we've had the last couple of days. and a nice brisk onshore flow bringing the cooler air from the coast over into the around the bay shoreline and even to some inland areas. now the inland areas are not cool, but they are not nearly so hot as they were yesterday. as a matter of fact, the 24 hour temperature change pretty much tells the story. is 18 degrees cooler in santa rosa than at this time yesterday. 17 degrees cooler at fairfield, 11

degrees cooler at concord. so all around the region we've had a bit of a cool down, although it's still quite warm inland. and here's a look at that marine layer from our sutro tower camera as we take a look at current temperature readings. 65 here in san francisco oakland, 7079 in hayward, 83 san jose, redwood city 78 and 59 at half moon bay. nice view from emeryville. looking westward toward the golden gate, 77 santa rosa, santa rosa, mid 70s. also at petaluma and napa. low to mid 90s right now, though at fairfield, concord and livermore. that's quite a bit lower, though than the triple digits we saw in those locations yesterday at this time. and now as we look across the embarcadero from our rooftop camera, these are the forecast headlines. heat wave continues into midweek and our inland areas through midweek. actually tuesday tomorrow through tuesday. a bit of a cooling relief as we showed you a little bit earlier. but wednesday and thursday it will be heating up again back into the triple digit range. so we still have this excessive heat warning in effect until 11 p.m. wednesday. under these conditions, there is still

the increased risk of heat related illnesses, even on days like this, when the heat sort of eases up a bit. so overnight, look for the marine layer to redevelop and push locally across the bay and locally inland. so early tomorrow morning it'll be lingering for a while and we may have a cool start in some spots to the day tomorrow, but it'll all burn back to the coastline by midday, giving us another warm day. overnight lows will be mainly in the upper 50s to low 60s. highs tomorrow mid 60s at the coast uh- upper 70s to low 80s around the bay shoreline. mid to upper 90s inland and on tuesday even cooler than tomorrow, especially in our inland areas. upper 80s to low 90s. but look at the reappearance of the triple digits on wednesday and thursday. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we get a nice little break, much more comfortable range of temperatures the next couple of days, but the heat will be back full force on wednesday and thursday. and even after that it will be slow to taper off as we head to next weekend though, it'll be a lot. the weather will
