foothills and conditions deteriorating as barrel churns towards the southeast texas coast. but plenty of locals have decided to stay put. abc seven news starts now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. a boiling in there. >> so like a melted ice cream right now. >> the extreme heat continues in parts of the bay area. there's more to come this week. thank you for joining us i'm j.r stone. the heat wave extends to day six. but what you feel depends on where you are. take a look at our bay area microclimates here on full display. you can see the differences in our mount tam pier 39 emeryville and san jose cameras here. with us now is abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian okay j.r. well, it was a little bit cooler or should i say less hot today than yesterday. so let's take a look at our current temperature readings. >> and you can see that we've got mainly 90s in our inland areas today where we had lots of triple digits. the last several

days. so a mild to moderately warm day. yet we still have the excessive heat warning in effect until wednesday night at 11:00. this heat wave has not ended yet. just because we had a slight drop in temperatures today. one reason for the drop is this cooling onshore flow. we've had a steeper, deeper marine layer the last couple of days than over the last week or so. so that's held temperatures down and will keep them in a more comfortable range tomorrow with inland highs in the mid to upper 90s. then on tuesday even lower temperatures except way up north at ukiah and clear lake. but on wednesday the triple digits bounce back become numerous in our inland areas and on thursday even hotter. we're talking about highs ranging from 101 to nearly 110 across. most of our inland areas. so the heat is still with us. it still can be dangerous to our health. bear that in mind. i'll have the full accuweather seven day forecast in just a few minutes. >> j.r. spencer, thanks so much. look forward to that. many folks across the bay area are waiting for this hot spell to end. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is live in sonoma where

people seem to be getting pretty good at beating the heat. cornell you're right. >> it seems like everybody has a plan to outsmart the weather. jr and i have to say, it feels a bit cooler today. there was a slight breeze here, but still too warm for many. sonoma plaza has been pretty empty today. folks are still dealing with extreme heat across the bay are. >> when a new love approached you about 100 people braved the hot weather to enjoy a free concert on sonoma plaza. >> shady spots were taken, but seats in the direct sun were up for grabs. >> we noticed that air conditioning almost nonstop running. >> albert and amy lynn are visiting sonoma from los altos, armed with water and a fan to keep cool. they want the long heat wave to be over already. >> it's too hot for me. >> yeah, yeah, it's like like a steaming hot and you just feel dizzy all the time. you really cannot do anything. >> water misters are keeping

guests cool at the roach family vineyards tasting room. >> it's been pretty darn hot. >> tom dusenberry says the extreme heat has been tough for his staff, but hasn't kept wine lovers away. >> we do have an air conditioned tap room in the back where we're able to accommodate some of the guests, but it's amazing. a lot of people just kind of tough it out and they they want to sit in the in the heat. >> in the east bay, thirsty dogs are hydrating near a hiking trail at walnut creek, open space. the area is reopening this weekend after being closed for several days due to high fire danger. rick isaacs is getting an early walk in with his dog. >> the real danger of the height of the high temperatures is not so much for me, though it does inhibit walking in the in the open, but it really affects the dogs. >> at the walnut creek farmers market, 11 year old rena yacoub has a checklist for beating the heat. and of course, lemonade is number one. the pool and sunscreen definitely the heat

tahoe area earlier this afternoon. there were traffic jams along interstate 80 and soda springs, and at stretches of i 50 near state line. the chp is conducting a maximum enforcement operation with additional officers out until midnight. firefighters in the sierra foothills are making progress on the pay fire burning near highway 50. the fire burned 77 acres east of placerville yesterday, and now forward progress has stopped. containment is at 5. first responders scaled back evacuations in the last 30 minutes, though there are still some mandatory evacuations around the placerville airport. no one's been hurt, and the fire has not damaged any buildings. crews are getting a better handle on the french fire burning in mariposa county near yosemite. yosemite national park containment has improved to 60. it's burned more than 900 acres since it began on thursday.

several evacuation orders were lifted for firefighters have been injured. michael jackson's neverland ranch is threatened by the lake fire, which is burning out of control in santa barbara county. it started friday afternoon in the los padres national forest. it's scorched more than 16,000 acres so far. homes are at risk and evacuation orders have been expanded. a man is under arrest, accused of starting the 11 acre pocket fire near geyserville yesterday with his lawn mower. cal fire says the man used a riding mower in four foot tall dead grass riding mowers are recommended for wet green lawns, according to cal fire. it's because the blades can hit rocks, causing sparks. officials urge the public to only do weed management under the right weather conditions. the man faces a felony and three misdemeanor charges. developing news now all of southeast texas is under a tropical storm or

hurricane warning, with beryl bearing down. powerful storm is expected to slam into the gulf coast tomorrow. beryl is the earliest category five atlantic hurricane in history and has already killed at least seven people in the caribbean's windward islands. here's courtney fisher from our sister station in houston. >> the island of matagorda is about 80 miles southwest of houston in the last hour or so, the winds have really picked up. we have seen the waves become choppier, but people around here are used to this, and a lot of them are staying put in the final hours before beryl hits. >> i've got one more, so i got the last door. >> thomas davis boards up the last few windows, one of the last on his street to leave. >> i would stay if we didn't have the two girls. i would definitely stay. >> staying is the norm for a lot of folks in matagorda. >> we've ridden them out here like floyd and marguerite ceruti. we're planning on staying here.

category one hurricane, packing 85 mile per hour winds. >> it was courtney fisher reporting the eye of the storm is expected to land in about 11 hours between corpus christi and galveston, texas president biden is hitting the campaign trail and the critical swing state of pennsylvania today as top democratic lawmakers discuss the future of his reelection bid. the president spoke at a church service and a campaign office today, house minority leader hakeem jeffries called in other top democrats to share their views on biden's ability to win after his debate performance. abc news reports. at least four senior democrats told jeffries that biden should step aside at the church event today. the president joked about his age and reiterated his commitment to running. >> you know, i've been doing this a long time and i, honest to god, have never more optimistic about america's future. if we stick together.

to attend an unsanctioned skating event, took a detour but went on as scheduled in san francisco. the dolores park hill bomb moved to nearby church street yesterday after police set up barricades on dolores street last year. skaters clashed with police and officers arrested more than 100 people yesterday, skaters flew down church street while both police and a large group of people watched. there were no signs of any confrontations with officers. it is head home day and airports are feeling the impact the travel rush is on right now. one airline says it's expecting to reach a new record high number of passengers today, and a live look outside. how much longer will the heat last? spencer christian is up next with your full forecast coming up in sports. >> it's all star selection sunday in major league baseball. the first time's the charm for three players with bay area ties. details on the giants and a's headed to texas for the

screenings. the previous record was set just weeks ago on june 23rd. american airlines is expected to transport the most passengers on any single day in its history, and anticipated 775,000 passengers will be flying with them today. for nasa volunteers who spent more than a year sealed inside a simulated mars habitat in texas have finally ended their mission. the crew was confined for 378 days inside the 1700 square foot habitat. their experiments were focused on nutrition and the impact on their performance. nasa says the collected data will help the space agency as it prepares to return to the moon and to mars. so while we're talking about mars and space, you've been looking at some other statistics from around here. spencer christian on good old earth. good old earth. how about a little bit of a cooling trend here in the bay area, which we needed badly after all the heat we've had lately.

>> here's a look at the satellite radar composite image. you see the marine layer beginning to deepen a bit and expand. not that little wimpy marine layer we had the last few days, so it's provided some cooling and temperatures have dropped a bit. and you see the wind speed is helping that cooling effect near the coast we've got breezes onshore breezes up to about 20mph, and the temperature change over the last 24 hours is pretty impressive. 14 degrees cooler in napa, ten degrees cooler in concord, 12 degrees cooler in livermore than at this time yesterday. so move along. here's a look at the low clouds moving in over san francisco over parts of san francisco. 63 degrees here in the city right now. oakland 68, hayward 75. low 80s at san jose and redwood city 57 at half moon bay. nice view from emeryville. looking westward, other temperature readings right now up north 75 at santa rosa, low 70s at petaluma and napa, 87 in fairfield, in low 90s at concord and livermore, where yesterday at this time, they were both in the triple digits. looking along the embarcadero now from our rooftop camera, these are the forecast headlines. heat wave continues through midweek and our inland

areas tomorrow and tuesday. a bit of cooling relief. it started today. it will continue the next two days. but wednesday and thursday it starts heating up again and those triple digit temperatures will bounce right back. so the heat wave clearly has not ended. and as a result, the excessive heat warning remains in effect even through these cooler days. until 11 p.m. wednesday. and under these conditions, of course, there is an increased risk of heat related illness. here's the overnight forecast animation showing the marine layer pushing steadily across the bay and locally inland. it will reside there until through the early morning hours and then by mid-morning to midday, we'll see it burning back to the coastlin, giving us a mainly sunny day away from the coast. overnight lows will be mainly in the upper 50s to low 60s. highs tomorrow 60s at the coast, 70s and low 80s around the bay. shoreline. low to mid 90s inland tomorrow and even cooler on tuesday. well, this says sunday afternoon highs doesn't it. that that well that here we go. here's the monday and now we get into tuesday. even cooler than what we have have in store for

tomorrow. but on wednesday and thursday we're going to see quite a warm up. and this these graphics seem to want to repeat themselves don't they. so i'll just try to skip ahead to hard to know how that happened. the accuweather seven day forecast. so a couple of cooler days tomorrow and tuesday. heating up again wednesday and thursday in fact up to about 106 in the warmest inland spots on thursday friday though, and into saturday begins another cool down and we'll be certainly thankful for that. >> well, it is selection sunday for major league baseball pitchers and reserve position players. the giants have two players that will be in texas later this month. the ace, logan webb, earns his first all star nod. he leads the national league in innings pitch. he's been a workhorse and joining him is outfielder ramos. what a great story. he's been since being called up may 8th. he's tied for the team lead with 12 home runs after today's game in cleveland. manager bob melvin sharing the good news with his guys for the first time. >> a right handed pitcher, logan webb. yeah elliott ramos
