live report from texas is coming up. with that, we say, good evening. i'm j.r. stone. we will be following the path of hurricane beryl all night. but we first begin with the wildfires in the west. and this intense heat blanketing the state. just to give you an idea of how widespread this heat wave is, this map from the national weather service shows it. well, all those pinks and oranges represent excessive heat alerts, advisories, and fire warnings across california, nevada and the pacific northwest. roughly 67 million americans were under some kind of heat warning. today in death valley, the temperatures hit 128 degrees this weekend. today, we learned a motorcyclist died from heat exposure while visiting the park yesterday, another motorcyclist in this group was taken to the hospital. las vegas broke its all time record today at 120. palm springs hit 124 here in the bay area. dangerous heat is

still with us, but we're starting to see temperatures drop. looking live at the bay bridge toll plaza after day six of this heat wave. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian tracking the cool down that we have been waiting for in your accuweather forecast. spencer. >> it has been refreshing. jr i hesitate to call it a cooldown, but it's been a heat reducing onshore flow. here's a look at our setup in the atmosphere. high pressure with this. with this clockwise circulation to our east and low pressure with this counterclockwise circulation to our northwest producing this nice onshore flow that has brought temperatures down significantly. nonetheless, we are still in a heat wave and we still have the excessive heat warning in effect for the bay area until 11 p.m. wednesday. so how does that affect tomorrow's weather? well, here's your day planner. 7:00 tomorrow morning we'll have some lingering fog, some cooling fog, i might add, with temperatures at 7 a.m. ranging from 60 to 62 from bay to inland. midday heating up under sunnier skies, low 70s around the bay, mid 80s inland.

by 4 p.m, the peak of our heating mid to upper 90s inland 80 degrees around the bay shoreline. then as we get to the 7:00 hour, the fog starts to roll in again and things start to cool down again. but there is more heat coming our way later in the week. i'll have all that in my accuweather forecast in just a few minutes. j.r. >> look forward to that. spencer. thank you so much. happening now. cal fire is stretched across the state taking on dozens of active wildfires, burning a combined 150,000 acres. tonight we begin with we begin with the newest, the so-called royal fire, racing through the mountains west of tahoe tonight. it broke out some time before 6 p.m. now this is time lapse video at last check. it's burning 55 acres in the royal gorge area by truckee, south of i-80 and soda springs. people driving back from tahoe could see that massive plume of smoke here from the highway. five homes are under mandatory evacuation tonight, along with some of the recreation areas.

michael jackson's neverland ranch is threatened by the lake fire burning in santa barbara county. explosive growth this weekend is pushing it to 19,000 acres in the los padres national forest off of highway 101. the fire has damaged one building, so far. one firefighter has been hurt. >> it's so out of control. you can just see there's little fingers of fire in all different directions. >> firefighters say thick smoke trapped over the area limited how much water tankers could fly today. evacuation orders expanded tonight, but firefighters are making progres. containment is now at 8. good news on the wildfire that's burning near yosemite and mariposa county. containment on the french fire is now up to 55. since starting on thursday, it's burning a little more than 900 acres. four firefighters have been hurt since it started, but several evacuation orders were lifted today. so certainly good news right there. we keep an eye

on every wildfire across the state. thanks to our abc seven news data team. we are currently tracking 43 wildfires statewide. you can use the same interactive tool by heading to our website. it also gives you an idea of fire warnings and air quality. it's right on the front page of abc seven news.com. with all these blazes, local cal fire officials are cranking up the enforcement on fire safety laws in the area. they're promising maximum punishments for human caused wildfires. we've already seen that this weekend, but in other places, the brief dip in heat is a welcome sight to many. abc seven news reporter ryan curry has more on the relief and the danger that still remains. the waiting is the hardest part. >> a line of chairs surrounding the edges of the pleasant hill city hall. why because they're all under the shade. i come here all the time during the summertime and enjoy this view. >> the bands that are playing.

>> how early do you have to secure this spot? >> so i have to tell you, pleasant hill held another round of its summer concert series, but this one was a little different. >> they pushed the concert back an hour because of the heat. it makes sense why so many were eager to stay out of the sun. >> i was here at 830 in the morning to get one of these spots here in the shade. >> the heat certainly did not stop these people from having a good time. >> this is how you do it. you just come up with this and it works. yeah, it feels amazing. you got to do what you got to do. >> but although there is a slight break in the intense heat, the fire danger is still strong. cal fire announced this week they arrested two people for allegedly starting two fires. they say one was started with a lawn mower, the other a weed whacker. >> the fear is, is that they can spark a wildfire because they throw sparks. in the case of mowers or weed eaters, you know, they could hit a rock and throw a spark. sometimes you get build up underneath those riding mowers. >> they say the grass is too dry

for anyone to do something that could start a fire. their message? be cautious. even if the temperatures are not as high as they were earlier this week. >> when we come to a section where things cool down a bit, we get a lot more people that are maybe looking to take advantage of that little reprieve in the heat and get outside and looking to do something. and, with that, we just urge people to be very cautious that they're avoiding activities that could spark a wildfire, a strong message that could keep the hills from burning in the east bay. >> ryan curry, abc seven news happening now texas is bracing for barrel racing towards the state and strengthening back into a hurricane tonight. >> the storm reached hurricane status again a couple of hours ago, with landfall expected within the next couple of hours. barrel already carved a path of devastation through the caribbean this past week, killing at least nine people. officials in texas are begging people to evacuate from low lying coastal spots. those areas are packed with people visiting for the holiday weekend. leaders

in houston are telling people to take shelter until noon tomorrow with most severe winds, rain and storm surge expected overnight around midnight. >> things will become very tense. so i want houstonians to know the world. the conditions that you go to sleep under tonight will not be the same. that you wake up in the morning. >> 121 counties are under disaster declarations tonight. barrel will be the first hurricane of the season to make landfall in the us. it already made history as the earliest category five ever recorded in the atlantic. climate scientists expect this hurricane season to be an intense one, as climate change warms up our oceans. we'll have a live report from the texas coast as barrel approaches coming up in less than ten minutes. now to your voice, your vote, and the growing turmoil for the biden reelection campaign tonight. sources tell abc news at least four senior house democrats are

now privately calling for president biden to step down from the ticket. they shared that in a meeting today called by house minority leader hakeem jeffries, biden's campaign maintains the vast majority of democrats believe he should stay in the race. at an event at a church in philadelphia today, biden joked about his age and repeated his promise to keep running. >> you know, i've been doing this a long time, and i, honest to god, have never more optimistic about america's future. if we stick together, the biden team is ramping up the president's campaign schedule to coincide with the republican national convention, beginning a week from tomorrow. >> president is trying to counter questions about his mental fitness after his shaky debate performance, something he tried to accomplish in a news exclusive abc news interview with anchor george stephanopoulos. >> it was a bad episode, no indicators of any serious condition. i was exhausted, i didn't listen to my instincts in

terms of preparing and a bad night. >> the person seen as a possible replacement. east bay native and vice president kamala harris, appeared this weekend at essence fest. harris did not address biden's challenges, trying to shift the focus to former president trump. >> you have the former president who is running to become president again, who has openly talked about his admiration of dictators and his intention to be a dictator. >> on day one, the president is set to spend most of the week taking part in a nato conference before his next campaign swing begins. speaking of the vice president, kamala harris husband, second gentleman doug emhoff, tested positive for covid on saturday. emhoff was just at the white house a few days ago celebrating independence day with harris, president biden and first lady jill biden. harris tested negative and has no symptoms. emhoff is staying home and working remotely. happening

you're two hours ahead of us. what are the conditions look like out there right now? >> well, j.r, we're certainly already feeling the effects of this storm. the outer rain bands, they're already here. this is what you're seeing right now. you can see just these sheets of rain coming down. this, combined with storm surge along low lying coastal areas. it's expected to cause potentially deadly flooding overnight. you can also hear the wind. you can see it on the trees. even my jacket. we've already had some gusts north of 60 miles an hour, but we know as barrel makes landfall, that's only going to intensify with winds stronger than 75mph. residents of sergeant texas like to think their tiny town is number one for a lot of things fishing, beaches. but for once, it's less than ideal to be first. >> this is where it's supposed to first make landfall, right? >> still, that is not enough to

scare off sue keith. >> just hunker down and hope for the best. >> she says she's left for two storms in her 35 years in sergeant, and this won't be one of them. >> i don't think it's going to be that bad, but she admits, you can never be certain of what mother nature will throw your way. you just have to wait and see. you never know what these storms are going to do. >> it is that uncertainty? >> it's so unpredictable. >> that drove rick galbreath, who's also lived on sergeant, for more than three decades, about 30 miles inland. >> no one really has a good feel of what it's going to do. >> that's why he's boarded up his home and is riding out the storm at this bay city hotel. >> yeah, the older you get. yeah, i play a little safer. i got grandkids to think about stuff now. >> yeah. and just like rick, this storm also drove us about 30 miles inland. we're here hunkering down at a hotel overnight, trying to ride out this storm. we're in bay city, and there is a mandatory curfew

in effect. so again, barrel the effects of it. the outer rain bands, they're already here in the eyewall. just a few hours out. so now is the time to be staying inside in bay city. shannon ryan abc seven news shannon, i know while we have you up here, it looks like that rain's coming down pretty hard right now. >> i don't know if you're limited to the hotel. have you seen any debris? have you seen officials passing by your hotel as you've been out there? i know looting is always a concern when you do have people leaving, leaving their home as well. >> it has. so we've had crews up and down the coast the past several days, but we actually started out on sergeant beach and that's where this is expected to make landfall. and we did have members from the constable's office out there check in on us repeatedly asking if we needed anything. and i'm not sure if you're familiar with that area. likely not, but it's a peninsula. and that's where, again, the storm is expected to make landfall. and they said they were doing door knocks out there trying to get people to leave that peninsula. they had

about seven people who decided to ride out that storm. and they told them after midnight that was it. they were cutting things off. they would not be able to help them. we have seen several members of law enforcement here patrolling the area and forcing that curfew. and again, we've seen several evacuees here in our hotel who told us after previous storms it just wasn't worth it. this is where they felt it was safest to ride it out. >> shannon, thank you so much. that's shannon ryan, we'll let you get dry for the and stay safe out there. and we need that in a serious tone. thank you so much. >> thank you. >> let's move to sfo. as we look out live from the airport tarmac tonight, a much different look from this camera to the last one. it was another huge travel day as many people are flying home from the holiday weekend. today was expected to be one of the busiest days ever for screenings at tsa. the previous record was set just a couple of sundays ago on june 23rd. as for the roads, check this out. this was how the trip back from tahoe

looked earlier today. you can see the line of cars in this clip that the chp posted up by truckee. earlier. there were traffic jams along 80 and soda springs and along stretches of highway 50 near state line. the usual spots. chp is also conducting a maximum enforcement operation, with additional officers out until midnight tonight. well, people across the bay area are baking in their homes in certain circumstances amid extreme heat. this week, according to our media partners at the east bay times, the san francisco oakland hayward area actually has the lowest air conditioning rates of any large metro area. this has long been the case in mild mediterranean climates, but air conditioning is now growing in popularity. 182,000 more homes have added air conditioning since 2015. the metro area has grown from 36 to 45% of homes having air conditioning in that time. and on that note, we're joined by

spencer christian. i'm still in awe over some of those images that we're seeing right now in houston as that storm rolls right in. >> yeah, yeah, i've been in a bunch of those storms, as you know, and they're no fun at all. but what we're experiencing right here, right now is not much fun at all either. this intense heat wave and dangerous heat because of the hazards it poses to our health. and of course, it raises the possibility of fires. we're looking at the combined circulation around high pressure to our east and low pressure to our northwest. now bringing us a bit of a cooling onshore flow. temperatures dropped off a little bit today. it's still pretty warm enough, but not in the triple digits today, as we have had the last several days. and right now we're looking at a steady flow of brisk winds onshore, pushing all the way out to the delta area. so there will be some cooling tonight. in fact, it's evident on the 24 hour temperature change. most locations are several degrees cooler than they were at this time last night. so let's move along and take a live view from mount tam. looking down a mixed conditions. skies mainly clear, but we have a few low clouds

pushing through the golden gate right now. 57 degrees in san francisco, oakland 5962. in hayward we have upper 60s at san jose and redwood city and 57 at half moon bay. quiet conditions in emeryville right now. other temperature readings, mid 50s right now at santa rosa and petaluma. napa 6165 fairfield and 70 at concord and livermore. let's check out our forecast headlines. heat wave will continue through the middle of the week inland. excuse me. inland tomorrow and tuesday a bit more cooling relief here across most of the bay area. but wednesday and thursday that hot weather comes right back again. it's going to be very hot inland on those days. so even though we've had a little bit of a drop in temperatures the last day or so, that excessive heat warning remains in effect through wednesday night. and of course, there's an increased risk of heat related illness under these conditions. overnight, we'll see the cooling marine layer pushing across the bay and locally inland. it will reside there for a few hours into the mid-morning hours before it starts to burn back to the to the coast, giving

us a mainly sunny day overnight. low temperatures will be mainly in the upper 50s to low 60s. highs tomorrow well low to mid 60s at the coast. we'll see mid 70s to low and mid 80s around the bay shoreline and inland areas that just yesterday had numerous triple digit readings will have mid to upper 90s tomorrow. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. they'll be further cooling on tuesday by a few degrees, but look at wednesday and thursday. those triple digit numbers just bounce right back 102 in the hottest inland spots. wednesday, up to about 106 on thursday, and still up to about 100 on friday. before we start to get what appears to be the beginning of a cooling trend, we'

shows fireworks in the streets and lines of officers moving in. police fired tear gas to clear the left wing crowds in central paris. france's prime minister plans to resign tomorrow. now the big changes for a tiny town in the san mateo coast, pescadero sits about 15 miles south of half moon bay. its population about 600. on a good day, things are done differently in town, especially when it comes to the way they govern. but that's all changing. the county says it is in the name of democracy. abc seven news building a better bay area reporter, lyanne melendez, spoke to some people who like things just the way they are. >> reporter the spanish word pescadero, loosely translated, means fishmonger. people in san francisco eagerly leave the commotion of the city to travel to this sleepy coastal town, where folks do well, what they do. >> people like to see a town
