areas have evacuated. this morning, barrel slamming the texas coast with flooding rains, damaging winds, even the threat of tornadoes. time lapse video shows houston's skyline disappearing as beryl approached. rainfall totals could reach 15in in isolated areas, with a storm surge up to seven feet along the gulf coast. >> the next 24 hours are going to be rough for harris county. what we don't know is exactly where and exactly how rough we know we're going to have wind. we know we're going to have rain that could lead to flooding. >> the surfers in galveston kicked off the beach. the conditions too dangerous. >> this is what we came for. this is what we do for this is what we do like we love. we love to surf. we love to get out there on the waves, get reckless, you know, get crazy. >> officials saying they're concerned more people did not evacuate the coast. >> we've looked at all of the roads leaving the coast, and the maps are still green, so we don't see many people leaving.

>> meanwhile, a record breaking heat wave is baking the west las vegas hit 120 degrees. the city's hottest day on record. phoenix set a new daily record for the warmest low temperature. it never got below 92 degrees yesterday, and a motorcyclist died from heat exposure while visiting death valley national park, where it was 128. the extreme conditions are fueling at least 21 wildfires in california. one fire in santa barbara county exploded over the weekend, burning more than 16,000 acres, prompting evacuations and threatening homes, including neverland ranch, the 2700 acre former home of michael jackson. >> they've been working throughout the last couple of days trying to build containment line down here on this kind of this what we would refer to as kind of the southwestern portion of the fire. >> last night, authorities said the fire was 0% contained. and within one mile of neverland ranch, the largest wildfire in california east of fresno was about 60% contained last night. >> more democrats calling for

president biden to step aside and withdraw from the presidential race. now, at least four senior democrats in congress are calling on the president to quit the reelection campaign. abc's ed wynn is here with the latest. good morning. am alisyn. >> good morning. yeah. democrats will come face to face with their colleagues on capitol hill today for the first time since some of them raised concerns about president biden's fitness for office. this morning. lawmakers are returning from their 4th of july holiday as more democrats raise concerns about president biden's candidacy. senator mark warner had scheduled a meeting with senate democrats today, assembling a group to ask biden to step aside. but a source says because news of the meeting leaked to the media, it made it impossible to have the conversations between senators privately in the house. several top democrats are now privately saying biden should withdraw from the race, including congressman jerry nadler, adam smith, mark takano and joe morelli. five other democrats in

congress have publicly called for biden to drop out. the pressure comes after the president's debate performance and his interview friday with our george stephanopoulos. >> and if you stay in and trump is elected and everything you're warning about comes to pass, how will you feel in january? >> i feel as long as i gave it my all and i did the goodest job as i know i can do. that's what this is about. >> that is the answer that most concerned me as well. this is not just about whether he gave it the best college try, but rather whether he made the right decision to run or to pass the torch in battleground pennsylvania this weekend, biden insisted he's staying in the race. >> don't give up, don't ever give up. and the president appeared confident in his party's support. behind mr. yes, vice president harris would be biden's natural successor if he

bowed to growing pressure. harris visiting new orleans, trying to shift the focus back to trump. >> this is probably the most significant election of our lifetime. you have the former president who is running to become president again, who has openly talked about his admiration of dictators and his intention to be a dictator on day one. >> recent polls suggest harris could perform better than biden against trump. one poll showing that independents and moderate voters of both parties prefer harris over trump. what progress has been made here in pennsylvania? >> well, there's been a lot of progress. we've got a lot more to do, though. >> meanwhile, a philadelphia radio station now says it's parted ways with its host, who acknowledged interviewing president biden last week using questions pre-selected by biden's campaign team. the campaign did not deny providing the questions, saying we do not condition interviews on acceptance of these questions. the campaign insisted it's not uncommon for interview subjects to share topics they prefer to

talk about. the president will be facing questions from reporters this week at the nato summit in washington, which begins tomorrow. allison. >> all right. m thank you. new uncertainty in france after a leftist coalition delivered a stunning blow to the far right party winning a second round of voting in national elections. emmanuel macron will remain president, with his centrist party coming in second, but no group won the majority. macron will now have to form alliances to run the government. >> boeing has agreed to a plea deal to avoid a criminal trial stemming from two deadly crashes involving its 737 max jets, the justice department says boeing will plead guilty to fraud, will pay an extra $240 million fine and will be overseen by an independent safety monitor. boeing is accused of misleading regulators, relatives of those killed in the 2018 and 2019 crashes in indonesia and ethiopia are asking a judge to reject the plea deal. >> we need to hold boeing accountable, not have them just

pay fines as part of the cost of their doing business. >> they killed 346 people. any human who kills that many people, or any people at all, should be held accountable. and this is just another sweetheart deal between the department of justice and boeing. >> the deal does not give boeing immunity for other safety incidents. >> now to chicago, where at least 100 people were shot over the holiday weekend. more than a dozen were killed, including victims young and old. experts say the surge in violence isn't just about guns and warm weather. it's about a change on the streets. this morning, the search for answers after a violent and deadly holiday weekend in chicago, at least 100 people were shot with three mass shootings reported in all, 17 people were killed, among them kapri edwards and her aunt nakisha strong, killed when

police say armed men targeted strong's home on the south side, it appears that this started from some type of personal dispute. police say edwards died protecting her one year old son. two of her other kids were shot. strong's son was also killed. >> i would never in my life in a million years would think that i would see my mom laying down the way she was this year, even worse than last july 4th, which saw 73 people shot and 11 lives lost. >> locals say gangs are to blame, but they aren't the same as they used to be. now they're running in smaller, more violent groups. one local neighborhood watch member saying a gang can be a block of people who don't like another block of people, adding that taunts on social media often lead to attacks. >> we have to work together to stop this. we can't. we can't break you know, fall apart. >> as for that shooting on the south side, no arrests were

reported. >> authorities in los angeles are trying to figure out how a man with no shirt managed to get on the tarmac at lax. investigators say he suffered a mental health crisis saturday and ran out of the terminal. back in february. a man ran through security doors also getting onto the tarmac. >> time now for your monday weather. >> good morning. beryl making landfall in texas and continuing to weaken as it works its way off towards the northeast through the middle of the week. it will bring states like michigan rainfall 2 to 4in. there but much more the farther south you go. in fact, into texas, we're looking at more than eight inches of rain. and that is the concern for floodin. beyond that, the western u.s. continues to bake numbers well into the triple digits, including portland 101 for that high for accuweather. i'm melissa costanza. >> coming up, what's behind a big increase in pets getting lost? >> but first, several shark attacks over the holiday

on gma. >> back now with fireworks at this jonas brothers concert in provo utah. veering into the crowd. several people were injured. investigators are looking into what went wrong during the july 4th display. organizers say the fireworks were checked twice before being set off. >> now that the 4th of july fireworks are over, animal shelters are seeing a surge in the number of lost pets. shelters around the country say loud noises from holiday parties caused many scared animals to run away. some shelters see up to a 50% increase in the number of lost pets in a frightening

holiday weekend, at several beaches in the u.s, people from texas to florida are recovering from shark bites. >> and now we're hearing from one of them. a series of shark attacks over the july 4th holiday have beach goers on alert. one of the victims now speaking out. >> just panic. trying as fast as i could to just get to shore any way i possibly could. >> 21 year old connor baker of ohio was vacationing in florida when terror struck at new smyrna beach. >> all of a sudden, i felt like my foot was just being like, stabbed on both sides, bottom and top. >> baker rushed to the hospital, the bite tearing four of his ligaments. >> i saw my foot and i could see like i could see the bite on my foot. that's when it really hit like, oh, it was a legit a bite. i wasn't just reacting. i got bit the next day at the same beach, a shark bit a man floating in an inner tube. >> and in texas, one shark on south padre island is blamed for injuring four people, biting two of them. shark bites in some locations have been on the rise.
