in over the west, records falling all over the place. las vegas hit 120 degrees, death valley even hotter. this man, he has that water. dru is tracking a little bit of relief to start the workweek and check this out. >> steph curry showing off the team usa jersey for this year's summer olympics in paris. >> look, i can top that las vegas temperature. >> where are you, dan? >> i believe it was 124 when i was in the palm springs area. this weekend. i have never felt that in my life. what a journey. good morning. on this monday, july 8th, that is really hot. >> thankfully we're not that hot, but we're still in the heat wave. we are. >> it's day seven, so it marches on through the rest of the week. we're about 60 degrees cooler right now compared to reggie's palm springs. we're in the 50s and 60s to start out the day, look at the morning though. here's a live look at the tam cam we have widespread fog out there this morning. current sky conditions across the region. most of us reporting some sort of cloud cover out there along the coast. it's pretty thick

right now with some drizzle as well. so temperatures are very comfortable for a lot of us. we're in the 50s and 60s as we get you going on this monday, but our heat advisories, they do continue. they've been extended until friday. so we're still underneath some of this warm weather away from the coast. now this afternoon, comparatively speaking, underneath this heat wave, it's certainly not one of our hottest days over the past week inland, but it's still quite warm. we'll get you into the mid 90s for daytime highs with full sunshine and our hottest cities today. now around the bay shoreline will mainly stay in the 70s and 80s. part of the reason why we have a lot of fog this morning that will take its time burning off, and that slows the warming process, but still, heat advisories are in effect around the bay shoreline along the coast. a lot of fog out there this morning. partly sunny and temperatures cool in the low 60s. let's check in with frances. see those drive times this morning. >> all right drew good morning everyone. and definitely there is some fog as you make your way along the peninsula peninsula coast, as you make your way through half moon bay and also pacifica, there is an accident

as you make your way on southbound 680 just before scott creek road, a two car crash, but it looks like it's off to the right hand side. and the slowing we're seeing this morning right now is out of tracy. of course, that always starts early during the 430, around time, and traffic is moving at 14mph. westbound 205 picks up a little bit to 35 miles an hour on 580 through the altamont pass. but the drive time tracy to dublin is 43 minutes, so that's already slow ride westbound for the bottom bar. antioch to concord, 14 minutes. and here's a look at the golden gate bridge, where traffic is light. but there was a little bit of mist this morning as i drove through san francisco. reggie. >> okay, frances. thank you. a hot start to that workweek. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live for us in san francisco. and gloria, people are trying to stay cool as we enter this day seven of the heat wave. >> they are reggie. and as you mentioned, we are going to see slightly cooler temperatures today. however, if you do want to get outside your best bet is to probably head to the coast today. maybe get outside early.

but also, east bay regional parks have reopened after being closed for nearly a week because of the high temperatures and also that fire danger. about 100 people braved the hot weather to enjoy a free concert at sonoma plaza yesterday. shady spots were taken, but seats in the direct sun were open. albert and amy lynn are visiting sonoma from los altos and they just want this long heat wave to be over. >> it's too hot for me. yeah yeah, it's like like a steaming hot and you just feel dizzy all the time. you really cannot do anything. >> it's very pleasant. we are very much enjoying your heat wave, being from new orleans with the humidity. this has been just wonderful. >> and as you heard, these tourists from new orleans are enjoying our warm weather and water misters are keeping guests cool over at the roach family vineyards tasting room, the extreme heat has been tough on the staff there, but it has not kept wine lovers away. and we

want to remind you be on the lookout for any of those symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, and they can range everything from cold, you know, pale skin, clammy skin to nausea and vomiting. so if you're having any of these symptoms, you should go in the shade and contact your doctor. live in san francisco. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you gloria. new developments cal fire is stretched across the state, taking on dozens of active wildfires, burning a combined 150,000 acres. this morning. let's start with the newest, the so-called royal fire. that is racing through the mountains of west west of tahoe. now, it broke out sometime before 6 p.m. yesterday, and this is time lapse video of it at last check. it's burning 54 acres in the royal gorge area by truckee, which is south of i-80 and soda springs. people driving back from tahoe could see that massive plume of smoke from the highway. five homes are now under mandatory evacuation, along with some recreation areas. >> michael jackson's neverland

ranch is threatened by the lake fire burning in santa barbara county. explosive growth over the weekend is pushing it to more than 16,000 acres in the los padres national forest off of highway 101. the fires damaged one building so far, and one firefighter has been hurt. >> it's so out of control. you can just see there's little fingers of fire in all different directions. >> firefighters say thick smoke trapped over the area limited. how many water tankers could fly? yesterday, evacuation orders expanded overnight, but firefighters are making progress. containment now at 8. >> good news on the wildfire that's burning near yosemite and mariposa county. containment on the french fire is now up to 55. since it started on thursday. it's burning a little more than 900 acres, four firefighters have been hurt since it started, but several evacuation orders have been lifted. we keep an eye on every wildfire across the state thanks to our abc seven news data team. we're currently tracking 43 wildfire statewide.

francisco sent an email endorsing candidates. it called peskin a, quote, threat and recommended voters leave him off their ballots completely. peskin says that language makes participating in this debate moot. he added he would take part in other debates in the future. asha safai. mark farrell, daniel lurie and current mayor london breed are all expected to participate tonight. >> happening today, giants fans will say one final goodbye to the say hey kid. the team is holding a public memorial and celebration of the life of willie mays. the hall of famer died last month at 93 years old. mays statue outside oracle park was taped off yesterday as the ballpark gets ready for that event. gates opened at 3 p.m. with a celebration of life set from 4 to 6, and this is free to attend. >> in the accuweather forecast. we are taking a look at our heat. so what's going to happen today is that underneath this heat wave we're on day seven. this is actually going to be one of the cooler days we have. but

temperatures are going to be above average. if you recall last week when we started this heat wave, our forecast highs were about 2025 degrees above average. today it's more on the order of 5 to 10 degrees above average. so it will be warm out there. but you notice the lack of any triple digit heat on the board. our warmest areas will go into the 90s today, so we will find temperatures on the warm side, but certainly not the hottest day we have had underneath this heat wave. in fact, the heat risk today is minor to moderate. for the first time in about a week. for much of this heat wave inland, we've had that major to extreme heat risk. but because of our morning marine layer, pretty thick right now, it's going to be slow to burn off. and that means the warming process is a bit slower today. so that means temperatures are going to stay in the 60s and 70s close to the coast, 80s and 90s in our warmest spots away from the coast. so here's future weather. even by 9 a.m, we're still trying to break down that fog around the bay shoreline. today is one of those days where the

coast is going to stay foggy all day long, and that will keep it in the 50s and 60s close to the ocean. our warmest areas today inland will be in the mid 90s for daytime highs, so highs today as our heat wave rolls on for another day. inland 98 in antioch, 93 in concord, 88. in napa, about 91 in san jose, 76. in oakland will go to 83. in fremont, 67 with partly sunny skies across the city. we get another day tomorrow. of those temperatures not excessively ho. and then here we go again. by wednesday, thursday, friday, these inland highs are back above 100 degrees. so we'll take a closer look at the return of that intense heat coming up in just a few minutes. reggie drew thank you. >> president biden's reelection campaign working overtime to push back against calls for him to drop out. the democratic lawmakers on capitol hill now making that request. >> san francisco police tried to prevent the annual unofficial hill bomb along dolores. skaters found a new hill. >> get your klay thompson merch before it's too late. the deal happening now as he prepares to leave the warriors.

senator mark warner of indiana has called off a meeting today with other lawmakers to discuss asking the president to step aside. it comes after news of the meeting got leaked yesterday for senior house democrats told house minority leader hakeem jeffries they are calling on the president to step down from the ticket. his campaign maintains the vast majority of democrats believe that the president should stay in the race. at an event at a church in philadelphia yesterday, the president joked about his age and repeated his promise to keep running. >> you know, i've been doing this a long time, and i honest to god, have never more optimistic about america's future. if we stick together. >> reporter the biden team is ramping up the president's campaign schedule to coincide with the republican national convention, which starts one week from today. the president is trying to counter questions about his mental fitness

exposure while visiting a park while visiting the park yesterday, i should say another motorcyclist in his group was taken to the hospital. it was so hot. medical helicopter copters were not able to fly other parts of the country. also dealing with hot temperatures. >> las vegas smashed its all time record, hitting 120 degrees yesterday. the previous record was 117 degrees, which has happened as recently as 2021. the normal average temperature for this time of year in vegas is 104. >> from hawaii. so i rather take the triple digits over the humidity any day. but it's crazy to see these like crazy excessive heat warnings for vegas in that area are in place through thursday. >> oof, this heat wave, it's going to pulse a little bit. so meaning we cool off relatively speaking today and tomorrow. and then it comes back. the middle part of the week. so we get a little bit of relief inland. i mean folks there day seven i've been hearing from friends even

in fremont. it's just been excessively hot. and that continues for the rest of the week. so the accuweather forecast this heat wave is not going to let up. it will feel a little cooler today, especially inland, but temperatures in our communities will have wide range. so 63.5 moon bay we'll go to 67 downtown. not too bad. in oakland today 76 with morning clouds to afternoon sunshine. but you hop inland and we're in the 90s, so certainly not the hottest day underneath our current heat wave, but it's still quite warm. 92 in walnut creek, 98 in antioch. so today or tomorrow, if you're thinking about going to the beach, we have a lot of cloud cover along our coast. the marine layer is pretty deep the next two days, meaning limited sunshine and our coastal communities, and will mainly stay in the 60s for bodega bay, ocean beach, half moon bay and santa cruz. the ocean water temperature is currently sitting in the mid 50s along our coastline, so highs today in our microclimates we're going to have a wide range of temperatures thanks to the mix of our marine layer interacting with the inland heat wave. so 86 in sunnyvale we'll go to 91 in san jose, but only 69 for santa

cruz. along the peninsula, it's quite cloudy for pacifica, half moon bay in the 60s, 82 for san mateo, go to 81. in mountain view. it's a cool day across the city, 60 in the richmond and sunset 67 downtown under partly sunny skies in the north bay. 86 in san rafael, but 102 in cloverdale, 94 in calistoga, but 78 in sausalito. the east bay. today we have that morning cloud cover, some afternoon sunshine. it's warm. 76 in oakland, 83 in fremont. we've got 86 castro valley. and then inland it is hot. that heat wave continues. it's not as hot as it was, say, late last week, but still temperatures are above average 92 in walnut creek, 98 in livermore, 97 in pittsburg. overnight tonight our marine layer is back in a big way that will bring us some overnight relief with temperatures mainly in the 50s. so tomorrow again is another comfortable day along the coast. it is quite warm inland, but watch what happens on wednesday. that intense heat makes a big comeback. by wednesday. we're back above 100

heat wave. fire threat still high. crews across the state busy battling 43 active wildfires. the warning from cal fire before you head out to get any yard work done. this week. good morning everybody. it's monday, july 8th. >> all right. let's see what the hot temperatures look like today. hi, drew. hey. >> good morning. so our inland heat wave rolls on. today is day seven. a live look outside our tam cam. we have a big difference this morning a very deep marine layer has reemerged that is helping to keep us relatively comfortable. this morning. look at most locations indicating some sort of cloud cover this morning. even areas like san francisco, napa, san jose, mostly cloudy conditions. so underneath the cloud cover, we're mainly in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. so out the door right now it is very comfortable. later on today it will be warm inland. but that heat advisory has been extended now until friday. so if you're keeping tabs uh- this heat wave is going to last 12 days. today, though, not one of the hottest days underneath the heat wave.

do some of your chores, like mowing the lawn or weeds that popped up on your property. but cal fire is urging you to wait a little longer to do anything that could spark a fire, especially with the grass being so dry. >> if you are doing any defensible space work, uh- now is really not the time to get any of that work done just because of the conditions. how dry and receptive those fuels are. so if you accidentally hit a rock and threw a spark, you very well could have a fire that gets started. so wait until we have better conditions to do any of that uh- landscape work around your home. trying to create that defensible space. >> cal fire announced last week they arrested two people for allegedly starting two fires. they say one was started with a lawn mower, the other with a weed whacker. and if you do start a fire, the punishment can range from everything from a fine all the way to prison time. live in san francisco gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you. gloria covid

appears to be spiking in many bay area communities, specifically in san jose. wastewater measures indicate covid levels are virtually the same as what they were at its peak during the first omicron surge in early 2022, although despite the near record high rates, other metrics show the virus is not as deadly as it once was. the now annual reformulation of the covid vaccine is expected to come out in august or september, after it's approved by the fda. crews are working right now to clean up a water main break in the east bay. it happened in the tara hills neighborhood of contra costa county, some people along kevin road grabbed their brooms trying to divert the water. east bay mud says the first calls came in around 915 last night. we're told this break involves an eight inch iron pipe. a handful of customers are still without water. crews are on scene making repairs, and they hope to have everything fixed by noon. the other issue will be getting around in the area. east bay mud says expect delays this morning

once traffic picks up. >> police in san francisco shut down dolores street this weekend to stop skaters from doing a so-called hill bomb again. however, skaters just managed to work around those closures. here's abc seven news reporter ryan curry. >> there are police everywhere around dolores park. the street is shut down. no one is allowed on it. >> we came here to skate and have fun, but the cops don't want to have to want to have fun. every year, skaters go down dolores street at high speeds. >> they call it a hill bomb. but sfpd doesn't want that bomb to go off. police have set up these barricades for several blocks on dolores. and look, they're even zip tied together. if you take a look down the sidewalk, you can see there's zigzagging these barricades all the way down there, making it very clear they don't want anyone skateboarding down this hill. skaters had plans to go down this year, but those plans got altered. last year. police arrested 100 people after skaters threw things at officers and vandalized a muni train. the police chief this week said he wasn't going to tolerate any more violence. the

skaters think there should be a way to work with the city to safely hold the event. >> the city was not without fair warning about this event. i was in contact with them a year ago, trying to engage about how to make this safer, even in the absence of an official organizer, and they failed to plan to do anything about this. >> however, residents living near the park are quite happy to see the street closed. >> it's public safety. it's not about kids not having fun, so we feel strongly glad to see their presence out here today. >> but although one street was closed that didn't stop the hill bomb. street while both police and a large group of people stood by and watched. mia lofton was one of the skaters going down the hill. >> it was like four skaters. they all say church street, and everybody heard them. they all just came over here. i guess the cops don't care about this one as much as the dolores one. >> police blocked off church street and let the skaters go down the hill. the skaters who

daytime highs. if you recall last week when we started this heat wave we had temperatures 2025 degrees above average. that difference today is more on the order of 5 to 10 degrees above average. so certainly not one of our hottest days underneath this current heat wave. but it will feel warm out there, especially in areas like livermore, concor, santa rosa, where those temperatures go back into the 90s for daytime highs. the heat risk today is minor to moderate, which is a huge improvement from last week when that heat risk was major to extreme. and part of the reason why we have that downgrade today is because of that morning marine layer. really kicking off a cool start to the day. and that slows the warming process. so future weather showing you 9 a.m. still around the bay shoreline. you can see that fog by the middle part of the day. it's going to be a cloudy day along the coast, quite sunny inland, but temperatures mainly in the 80s and our warmest spots at that time, and then into the afternoon, our hottest areas going into the 90s, mainly 70s

and 80s around the bay shoreline. so today the heat advisory continues inland. this is day seven of our heat wave 98 in antioch today, 95 in santa rosa, 91 in san jose, but a pretty mild 76 in oakland, 67 in the city with a fair amount of cloud cover for much of the day. you look at the three day forecast today and tomorrow. we keep those temperatures above average, but nothing intense. the next 48 hours, that all changes by wednesday. triple digits are back and it gets even hotter here. on thursday. we'll take a look at those daytime highs coming up in

million people at checkpoints nationwide. yesterday that is the most ever in a single day at a u.s. airport. the previous record was set just a couple of sundays ago, june 23rd. a huge shakeup in hollywood, the wall street journal reports paramount has agreed to a merger with the production company skydance. skydance is run by bay area native david ellison. that's the son of oracle co-founder larry ellison. paramount is a movie studio behind the godfather. it also owns cbs and networks including mtv and nickelodeon. regulators have to review that deal, which could take months. john deere is laying off hundreds of employees across the country. the farm equipment company is cutting 600 workers and three factories by the end of august. it says the changes are being made because of reduced demand for the products at those facilities. that decline in demand comes as the number of farms has fallen. apparently there were about 1.9 million farms in the u.s. last year. that's down from just over

2,000,000 in 2017. >> target is making an official change to something most of us stopped doing a while back. starting july 15th, you'll no longer be able to write checks to pay at target. the company says the change is being made because of extremely low volumes of check writing in recent years. now, target will still accept several forms of payment, including cash and all major credit and debit cards. getting ammunition for a firearm is as easy as heading to a vending machine, at least that's how it works right now in alabama and in two other states. american rounds has installed these ammo vending machines in local grocery stores. it uses facial recognition powered by ai and an id scanner in order to verify the buyer. >> the reviews and interactions we've had with customers think it's a good idea. they think it's convenient. they like the fact that it's here. uh- sales have been steady and strong at all the locations we've launched so far, and hopefully it just continues that trend.

slow the warming process. so it is slightly cooler inland. i know 90 seems weird to say. that is cool, but relatively speaking, compared to those triple digits we had last week, it feels a bit better today and tomorrow, but it's a brief cooldown because the intense heat is back here starting on wednesday and then those triple digits are going to stay with us through thursday and friday in our hottest spots. in fact, thursday this week could be approaching 110 again in our hottest spot. so because of that, the heat wave has been extended. this advisory that we have has now been pushed until friday. so if you're keeping count this heat wave is likely going to last 12 days. today is day number seven. highs in our microclimates 80s and 90s in the south bay 87. cupertino 91. in san jose along the peninsula, it is cloudy and cool for the coast, but sunny and warmer at redwood city at 8681 for mountain view. the city today is on the cooler side, partly sunny for the most part. we'll keep those temperatures in the 60s in the north bay pretty wide range. 60s and 70s close to the water.
