lake tahoe. >> and if you love ketchup, one company coming out with a fashion line for you. i don't know if you love it that much, but we're going to tell you about the accessories that are all kinds of inspired. >> who is this for? good morning. on this monday, july 8th, yes, we're going to start the check of our forecast with drew. >> yeah. and you talked about it being cooler out there relatively speaking this afternoon. >> so our hottest areas will remain in the 90s today. and tomorrow before we see our heat wave spike once again later this week. a big reason why we're slightly cooler today. look at this. all that fog out there, current sky conditions across the region. most of us reporting some sort of cloud cover out there. and that's going to slow the warming process. so underneath the cloud cover right now we're mainly in the 50s and 60s. so it is quite comfortable as you get going on this monday. but the heat advisories have been extended. now they're pushing until friday. so if you're keeping track today is day seven, which will end up being an 11 day heat wave by friday. so the warm temperatures

are sticking with us today. inland you notice a lack of any 100 degree plus heating. we're finding temperatures more in the 90s today, so still quite warm inland. just not one of our hottest days underneath this heat wave around the bay shoreline will be in the 70s and low 80s, with morning clouds giving way to afternoon sunshine along the coast. today it is quite cloudy and we'll keep those temperatures in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. let's check in with frances. see this drive times this morning? >> hi. drew is off to a pretty good start this monday morning, but it is getting a bit crowded on the bay bridge. here's a live shot. metering lights were turned on, so it is a slow ride into san francisco. in fact, the drive time for you. westbound 80 highway four to the maze is 18 minutes. and then we're going to add on another 14 minutes on westbound 80 from emeryville into san francisco, southbound 101. looking good, though, if you're headed to the airport from san francisco to sfo, here's another look at 101 in san rafael, and you can see it's delay free down to the golden gate bridge, 101. also looking

good on the peninsula into the south bay. and if you're planning on taking mass transit, bart, caltrain and ace all reporting no delays. reggie. >> thanks, francis. happening now. it's a little cooler this morning across the bay area, but we are going to still see hot temperatures for a few more days. abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez is live in san francisco. gloria, some people are going to be pretty happy. there's a bit of a break. >> reporter yeah, you know, as drew has been mentioning, we are going to see slightly cooler temperatures, but still a little bit hot out there. so if you want to get outside, you know, your best bet is to go out there early, maybe even head to the coast. and a lot of people have been doing that this past week with the nicer temperatures out there. so you can also go to east bay regional parks. they just reopened. they were closed for about a week because of those high temperatures. and also the fire danger about 100 people braved the hot weather to enjoy a free concert over at sonoma plaza that was yesterday. shady spots were taken, but seats in the direct sun were open. albert and amy lynn are

wildfires that are burning a combined 150,000 acres this morning. let's start with the newest so-called royal fire. it's racing through the mountains west of tahoe. it broke out sometime before 6 p.m. yesterday. this is time lapse video at last check. it's burning 54 acres in the royal gorge area by truckee, south of i-80 and soda springs. now people driving back from tahoe could see that massive plume of smoke from the highway. five homes are under mandatory evacuation, along with some recreation areas. >> michael jackson's neverland ranch is threatened by the lake fire burning in santa barbara county. explosive growth over the weekend is pushing it to more than 16,000 acres in the los padres national forest off of highway 101. the fire has damaged one building so far, and one firefighter has been hurt. >> it's so out of control. you can just see there's little fingers of fire in all different directions. >> firefighters say thick smoke trapped over the area limited

how much water tankers could fly yesterday? evacuation orders expanded overnight, but firefighters are making progres. containment now at 8. >> good news on the wildfire that's burning near yosemite in mariposa county. containment is on on the french fire is up to 55% since it started on thursday. and it's burning a little more than 900 acres. four firefighters have been hurt since that fire started, but several evacuation orders have been lifted. we keep an eye on every wildfire across the state on our abc seven news data team. we are tracking 43 wildfire statewide. you can use the same interactive tool by heading to our website. this gives you an idea of the fire warnings as well as the air quality. you can find it on the front page of abc seven news.com. >> breaking overnight barrel has made landfall in texas as a category one hurricane. this is new video of the conditions there early this morning. the storm is bringing flooding rains and wind gusts of 80mph. a

tornado watch is in effect for most of southeast texas. officials have dozens of ambulances ready to help with evacuating hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities if needed. houston schools have canceled summer classes and activities, and all campuses are closed today and tomorrow. barrel is the first hurricane to make landfall in the lower 48 states since idalia hit florida last august. >> happening tonight. the major candidates for mayor in san francisco will be facing off in another debate. one contender, though, will not be taking part. aaron peskin is refusing to participate because he says the group organizing the debate is highly partizan. last month, neighbors for a better san francisco sent an email endorsing candidates. it called peskin a, quote, threat and recommended voters leave him off their ballots completely. peskin says that language makes participating in this debate moot. he added he would take part in other debates in the future. asia. sapphire, mark farrell, daniel lowry and current mayor london breed are all expected to participate

tonight. >> happening today, giants fans will say one final goodbye to the say hey kid. the team is holding a public memorial and celebration of life for willie mays. the hall of famer died last month at 93. mays statue outside oracle park was taped off yesterday as they got ready for the event. gates opened at three with a celebration of life set from 4 to 6, and that is free to attend. >> make sure you keep your dog on a leash. that's the warning from san francisco firefighters who rescued a dog off of a steep bluff at fort funston. the fire department shared this photo of the rescue yesterday morning. they say the dog fell about 15ft down the side of a slope. the animal wasn't hurt. rescuers were able to reunite it with its owner. firefighters say they have a lot of experience with these types of rescues because they encounter so many unleashed dogs. >> 608 this morning, as we get you going over the next couple of hours, you will notice we have a fair amount of cloud cover, a deep marine layer this

morning, which is going to slow our warming process over the next couple of hours. by 9:10 a.m, we're back into full sunshine across the region, but temperatures are still in the 60s by 10 a.m. and that's why inland today and tomorrow, we'll find temperatures in the afternoon in the 90s, relatively speaking, that's one of our cooler days underneath this heat wave. look at highs versus average today. the forecast in the first column. and you notice a real lack of any 100 102 degree readings. today our warmest cities like livermore, concord and santa rosa will be in the 90s. and that's about 5 to 10 degrees above average for this time. of the year. the heat risk today minor to moderate. but as we head towards wednesday and thursday, that heat risk will jump back towards major and extreme inland. so a little bit of relief today underneath this heat wave. future weather shows you that fog is still breaking down by 9 a.m. heading into the afternoon. we'll keep the coast nice and cloudy and cool. and then inland, you see those temperatures? we're mainly in the 90s for daytime high, so a

warner of indiana has called off a meeting today with other lawmakers to discuss asking mr. biden to step aside. it comes after news of that meeting being leaked. yesterday, four senior house democrats told house minority leader hakeem jeffries they are calling on the president to step down from the ticket. his campaign maintains the vast majority of democrats believe he should stay in the race. at an event at a church in philadelphia yesterday, the president joked about his age and repeated his promise to keep running. >> you know, i've been doing this a long time and i, honest to god, have never more optimistic about america's future. if we stick together. >> the biden team is ramping up the president's campaign schedule to coincide with the republican national convention, which starts one week from

trial for the 2021 rust movie set, shooting a hearing today will likely determine which arguments, evidence and testimony the jury will hear. baldwin is facing manslaughter charges for the death of cinematographer halyna hutchins. she died after a gun. baldwin was holding went off. baldwin has pleaded not guilty. new details dublin base patelco credit union says its network has been stabilized. patelco ceo says the credit union will reimburse late fees. non patelco atm fees or overdraft fees that customers incurred. she also says customers with patelco loans or credit cards will not be charged late fees because of missed payments, while their system was down. patelco says they still don't know when online account services will be restored. >> people across the bay area are baking in their homes amid this extreme heat, according to our media partners at the east bay times. san francisco, oakland, hayward area has the lowest air conditioning rates of any large metro area, and this

the intense heat is back here starting on wednesday with triple digits returning. and that will last through friday. so for that fact, the heat wave has been extended until friday, which means this heat wave will last about 11 days. today is day number seven. the coastline today is going to be quite cloudy in fact tomorrow as well with that deep marine layer. thinking of going to the beach? don't expect a lot of sunshine today. temperatures though will be on the cool side with daytime highs in the 60s, so highs in microclimates in the south bay will be in the 80s and 90s for the most part for daytime highs. coastal cooling in the 60s along the peninsula. but 82 in san mateo with sunshine 81. mountain view 86. redwood city partly sunny over the city today. temperatures mainly in the 60s, which is at or just slightly below average for this time of the year. in the north bay we have a big range of temperatures 60s for bodega bay. stinson, 78. in sausalito, but 95 in santa rosa, 94 in calistoga, 88 in napa. the east bay. today we

obesity linked cancers in type two diabetics. researchers used data from health records of 1.6 million patients in the us. compared with insulin, glp one medications could reduce cancer risk by up to 65% in some cases. however only patients with type two diabetes were studied. it's not clear if the medications would have the same effect for people taking them specifically for weight loss to san francisco giants have made the national league all star team pitching ace logan webb got his first all star nod, and joining him is elliott ramos. since being called up may 8th, ramos is tied for the team lead with 12 homers. this is also going to be his first all star game. the a's will have one player at this year's all star game, and that is closer mason mueller, who got his first nod. mueller has the highest average fastball of any pitchers. this year, with his heater hitting more than 100 miles an hour. the all star game is next tuesday night in

kumasi. >> i mean, there are many residents in south texas that are waking up to kind of a scary situation. we're talking about downed power lines or trees, many without power officials are warning of, of course, flash flooding and rough winds to continue telling people just to stay inside. this morning, hurricane beryl slamming into texas, making landfall just south of houston. the category one hurricane bringing torrential rain and damaging wind. >> it will be a deadly storm for people who are directly in that path. >> barrels sustained winds increasing to at least 80mph. storm surge warnings in effect with up to seven feet of surge possible over regular tide levels. >> i always take it seriously and you know, man, we live along the coast. >> some residents urged to get out as others hunker down, boarding up their homes and businesses just boarding up protecting this glass in case we get a little bit too much wind.

experts say barrels explosive growth into an unprecedented storm so early in the season was fueled by the atlantic's record warmth. this storm passing through the caribbean days ago on its way to texas, causing at least 11 deaths, ripping off roofs and destroying buildings, many still reeling from the devastation. >> you found that other essential services is critical at this point in time, everything was just flying all over the place. >> you're looking at, a tank full of water and this thing is lifted up and have it swollen in the area. but, you know, i i've never seen anything like this in my life. >> barrel expected to bring up to 15in of rain across parts of texas. remnants of the storm also set to impact the nation's heartland later this week, with flooding and possible twisters. live here in washington. i'm ed wynn, abc seven news. >> and thank you. today, some of the bay area, we'll see slightly

cooler temperatures than what we've been seeing recently, but it's still going to be hot. and that could fuel fire conditions. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live for us in san francisco. gloria. cal fire has a warning for people not to let their guard down. even though we do have this cooler break. >> that's right. reggie. cal fire is ramping up enforcement on fire safety laws in the area. and the punishments they are promising maximum punishments for human caused wildfires. so even though we do have a slight ease in those temperatures for today, expected, the fire danger is still strong and your instinct might be to get outside, do some chores like mowing the lawn or weeds that popped up on your property. but cal fire is urging you to just wait a little longer to do anything that could spark a fir, especially with the grass being so dry. >> if you are doing any defensible space work, uh- now is really not the time to get any of that work done just because of the conditions. how

dry and receptive those fuels are. so if you accidentally hit a rock and threw a spark, you very well could have a fire that gets started. so wait until we have better conditions to do any of that. uh- landscape work around your home. trying to create that defensible space. >> cal fire announced last week they arrested two people for allegedly starting two fires. they say that one was started with a lawn mower, the other with a weed whacker. and they say if you do start a fire, the punishment can range from a fine all the way to prison time. live in san francisco gloria rodriguez abc seven news thank you. >> gloria covid appears to be spiking in many bay area communities, specifically in san jose. wastewater measures indicate covid levels are virtually the same as what they were at its peak during the first omicron surge in early 2022, although despite the near record high rates, other metrics show the virus is not as deadly as it once was. the now annual reformulation of the covid vaccine is expected to come out

in august or september, after it's approved by the fda. crews are working right now to clean up a water main break in the east bay. it happened in the tara hills neighborhood of contra costa county. some people along kevin road grabbed their brooms trying to get that water out. east bay mud says the first calls came in around 915 last night. we're told the break involves an eight inch iron pipe. a handful of customers are still without water. crews are still on scene making repairs. they're hoping to have everything fixed by noon. the other issue will be getting around the area. east bay mud says to expect delays this morning once traffic picks up. >> skateboarders gathered in san francisco for the annual unsanctioned hill bomb event. police blocked off dolores street, trying to prevent people from skating down that steep hill. some residents say they were happy to see the street closed. skaters found a way around the barricades on saturday and moved to church street. police and a big group of people stood by and watched. skaters think there should be a way to work with the city to safely hold the event.

downgrade from the past couple of days. we're inland. our heat risk was as high as extreme. so we get a little bit of relief from the excessive heat today, but heat advisories are still in effect. you look at highs today versus average. you notice a real lack of any intense heat. yes, it is warm in livermore, concord, santa rosa in the 90s, but we're not surpassing 100 degrees today. in fact, the difference really is about 5 to 10 degrees above average for this time of the year. so we'll take a look at future weather showing you we have clouds this morning breaking for sunshine by lunchtime. we'll keep it pretty cloudy along the coast with warmer temperatures inland. and today our daytime highs will be in the 70s and 80s around the bay shoreline inland. our warmest areas will be in the 90s, so heat advisories continue. today is day seven of our current heat wave inland 93 in concord, 91 in san jose, 95 in santa rosa. but a more

comfortable 76 in oakland, 67 in the city with partly sunny skies now looking at the three day forecast we'll keep today and tomorrow very similar. we'll have 90s inland, 80s around the bay shoreline, 60s along the coast, but then we're heating up once again. we go back above 100 degrees inland on wednesday, gets even hotter here on thursday. reggie, we'll show you those afternoon highs coming up in just a few minutes. >> drew. thank you. boeing has agreed to a plea deal to avoid a criminal trial over two deadly. 737 max crashes the justice department announced the agreement last night. a week after attorneys for the victims families raised concerns about this deal. as part of the agreement, boeing will plead guilty to conspiracy to defraud the united states. the company will also pay a $243 million fine and invest $455 million in safety programs. a federal judge still has to approve this deal, and attorneys for victims families are planning to ask that judge to reject it. >> as people head home after the july fourth holiday, the tsa is
