one of three locations on either july 1st or july 2nd may have been exposed to measles and a measles warning in the south bay. >> what you need to know if you were exposed. good afternoon, i'm kristen z and i'm larry beil. >> thanks for joining us. we'll begin with the weather and the lingering heat wave we're experiencing. and those heat wave advisories have been extended. yeah. >> let's check in with spencer christian with the latest update. spencer. okay. >> christine and larry, we are still in the grips of this heat wave, although we got a little bit of a break today and we'll have a break tomorrow as well, because the marine layer, the cooling marine layer returned to the coastline overnight, extended, expanded across the bay and locally inland. it hung around long enough this morning to keep temperatures in our inland areas from rising to. the excessive levels we saw last week and into the weekend. so as we look at current temperatures, you can see that, right? you know, this keyboard freezes up from time to time. so bear with me for a second, folks, while i do the little trick that has to make it work. nothing seems to

make it work. oh, here we go, so right now we're looking at temperature readings in the low to mid 90s and most of our inland areas where just a couple of days ago we saw 108 to 110 degrees. we see 60s and 70s around the bay shoreline, where we saw 80s and low 90s recently. and as we look ahead once again, the heat advisory has been extended to 8:00 friday evening for all of the bay area and is still an excessive heat warning for parts of lake county. parts of mendocino county, and virtually all of mendocino county. so on we go to what we can expect wednesday as the heat returns back to the triple digits inland, even higher into the triple digits on thursday. so the heat wave is not over. it's going to last. going to last at least into this weekend. so all the precautions should still be in place. i'll have the full forecast a little bit later. larry. >> all right. spencer, it's so hot. even your computer overheated. we've seen hundreds of new temperature records across the west the past few days. palm springs set a new all time high on friday. that was 124 degrees. death valley

setting daily records both saturday and sunday, 128 degrees. it hit 119 in redding, 112 a bit north in medford, oregon. it has never been that hot there, and yesterday was not exactly a breeze either. a record 120 degrees in las vegas, and this intense heat is not helping firefighters battle fires across the state. abc news reporter zohreen shah with the latest. >> thousands are evacuating their homes as over 20 wildfires gain ground across the west in santa barbara county, the lake fire burning through more than 20,000 acres, threatening many homes, including michael jackson's neverland ranch. that fire only at 8% containment. one firefighter there now injured are kayna whitworth is there. >> you can see this fire has burned up. this hill here. it's torching everything in its path and those flames back there are several feet high. >> and the pay fire in el dorado

county burning dangerously close to the placerville airport. the conditions worsened by extreme heat throughout the region. taking the life of one park goer in death valley, where temperatures hit 129 degrees, redding, california breaking their all time temperature on saturday, hitting 119 degrees, breaking their record of 118 from just the day before. >> it's worse than an oven. i don't know. >> it's like an oven. it's like walking in the oven or you open the oven after 350. yeah, it's in the face. >> over 140 million people across the country impacted by some form of heat alerts. there's an all time record breaking heat of 120 degrees in las vegas. they're expected to stay around there until friday, and officials there are bracing for illnesses related to heat and possibly an uptick in hospital trips. these temperatures certainly life threatening. zohreen shah, abc news, los angeles a group of hikers is safe after going missing in the mountains west of lake tahoe, where a wildfire is burning. >> new video from the placer county sheriff's office shows the moment the hikers were

located via helicopter along the palisades creek trail this morning, two members of the falcon crew dropped in and then led the group of 13 to hike out away from the royal fire. they are all okay. the fire has burned 169 acres since it started yesterday. good news on the wildfire that's burning near yosemite in mariposa county. containment on the french fire is now up to 60. since starting on thursday, several evacuation orders have been lifted. the french fire has burned a little more than 900 acres. >> an electric scooter is to blame for sparking a fire at a four story apartment building. this happened this morning on leavenworth street near mcallister. firefighters say that scooter was charging when it suddenly caught fire. crews put out the flames quickly containing them to one unit. one person taken to the hospital with minor injuries. three people are now displaced and not much is left of a couple's powerboat. after a fire on the bay this afternoon, firefighters put out the flames as it engulfed this 50 foot boat about

two miles off the shore of redwood city. that fire reported at about 130 in the afternoon. the boat owners and their dog were safely rescued. no word yet from investigators on how that fire may have started. >> following up on all the illegal fireworks you saw and heard over the last couple of days around the 4th of july in the bay area, and now we're learning more about the numbers from authorities. abc seven news reporter luz pena gathered data from several cities that show a number of grass fires, injuries and arrests. >> lose everything was happening. several bay area cities say they had been preparing for the 4th of july, with more law enforcement deployment and new strategies in oakland, the police department said they had a team monitoring their tip line, and officers went to strategic locations, but fireworks were still visible and loud throughout the city, as well as many others across the bay area. as we know, fireworks are illegal. so we asked was anybody arrested? this was a common sound throughout the bay area. >> it was pretty darn loud and it got even louder as the night

went on. it just sounds like world war three in oakland, this resident said she stayed indoors hearing a mix between fireworks and gunfire, but she, the gunfire because, you know, it's unsafe for people, the local people to walk around. >> and in oakland's fruitvale a couple recorded fireworks going off for hours once in a while. >> we did hear a police car going by, but, you know, there was so much smoke and sound and, you know, just everything. >> and so where were the officers? we interviewed the oakland captain in charge of the 4th of july deployment. >> there was a lot of fireworks going on almost simultaneously for several hours throughout the evening. and so just resource wise, it's very difficult. and challenging to actually respond to all the calls for service, captain paez said. >> they had a strategic deployment, sending officers to areas that were problematic last year, but this time ahead of the

fourth this year, what we did is we actually were proactive and responded to those areas before they're able to set up regarding arrests, oakland said they arrested seven people. santa clara county sheriff said no arrests or citations were given out. santa rosa police said 22 arrests were made. we contacted sfpd asking about their numbers. we're still waiting to hear back. the city's health department did confirm zuckerberg san francisco general hospital received eight patients from july 3rd to the fifth, with blast injuries from fireworks to the face and hands, this resident wants police to do more. she left town with her dogs, knowing this would happen. >> it's sort of like a bomb to them. >> fire danger was of high concern throughout the bay area in contra costa county, the fire department received 1100 calls for service and reported 310 incidents. >> on the evening of the fourth, we responded to over 90 exterior fires. we can say that the majority of the fires that we responded to on the fourth were

caused by fireworks in other cities across the bay area, fire crews and law enforcement agencies were out in full force. >> santa clara county sheriff reported 48 reports of illegal fireworks. alameda county fire received 199 reports. santa rosa police 2700 calls to their communication center, and many of these agencies confiscated hundreds of pounds of fireworks around the holiday. in oakland, the police department confiscated more than 500 pounds of fireworks, so despite the illegal shows they considered this year a success. luz pena, abc seven news. all right, thank you. >> luz. new developments today about the man accused of intentionally driving his family off devil's slide last year. thankfully everyone survived. today, a judge suspended criminal proceedings against dharmesh patel. patel will take part in a mental health program for two years while on supervised release with gps monitoring. the 43 year old radiologist has also been ordered to not practice

medicine. >> and now to that unbelievable gas station. video the station ransacked by more than 80 people early friday morning. we first told you about the incident at the 76 station off hegenberger road on friday. >> today we're following up on the stunning story. abc seven news reporter lena howland went to the gas station and looked for answers. >> oakland police staging around the 76 gas station on hegenberger. this three days after the gas station was ransacked by a group of around 80 people following a sideshow in the area. >> 40 minutes you could do a lot of damage in 40 minutes. that's how long they were in here, sam ardai is the manager and co-owner of this gas station. >> he believes the vandals caused upwards of $100,000 in damage that includes the $22,000 taken from their own atm. he says the only employee working the gas station's window at the time left for fear of their own safety and called police. >> they said there was nothing we could do. you cannot just

file a report online. that's how you respond. >> he says it wasn't until nine hours after the incident when an officer was sent to the scene. police said they weren't aware of the magnitude of the incident until seeing this video. >> it was being looted. it's lawless. >> ken houston is director of oakland's beautification council. he had a backpack with all of his devices stolen and later hacked while parked outside of his business on hegenberger just two weeks ago. >> this is a business that pays taxes to keep our city going. would you want to stay there and continue your business, or would you move like denny's right down the street? or would you move like in and out? >> oakland city council member trevor reed represents this district. she went to the 76 gas station on monday to meet with the owner. >> it has really shaken us in the midst of seeing a 70% plus reduction in crime. the money that these businesses have been working to harden their stores and to protect their workers and to keep this regional gateway

to a health alert in the south bay, santa clara county health officials say an infected person went to two restaurants last monday. a starbucks in los gatos and a taqueria los pericos in santa cruz. then on tuesday, that person took a flight from san jose mineta international to chicago. >> we are working with the cdc, with the state health department and other agencies to investigate and identify any individuals here in our county who may have been exposed and provide them with recommendations on how they can stay safe. >> anyone who thinks they may have been exposed to first check to see if they've been vaccinated against measles. those who haven't should call their doctor as soon as possible. also monitor for symptoms like a fever or unexplained rash. symptoms could appear up to three weeks after exposure. covid appears to be spiking again. wastewater measures indicate covid levels are virtually the same as during the first omicron surge in early 2022. still, other metrics show the virus is not nearly as

mays. now fans started coming here just after 3:00. there was an amazing choir singing gospel music as fans found their seats. you had a slide show of willie's life. his tremendous career with the giants also playing on the jumbotron for the past hour. plus. now i mentioned john miller is leading the way as we speak right now. uh. unfortunately, there was no media availability for those scheduled to speak this afternoon, but i was in birmingham, alabama last month. as you may remember, covering that game at rickwood field just after willie had passed and had a chance to catch up with some baseball legends to get their thoughts and stories from time spent with the say, hey kid, it took me a little while to build up my confidence to go in and meet him, but i remember the first day i walked in the clubhouse. >> he was sitting in there and i just thought it was the coolest thing, that he was actually there. and approachable every single day. >> i wanted to get a chance to see willie and take a picture with him and you know, they told him i was coming in and as soon as i walked in, he grabbed his hat and took it to the side and was like, that's the kid that wears his hat like that. so, you

know, it's just one of those things where he was always in a great mood. he was always bringing joy to people. >> knowing willie, you know, in the time that i spent around him, he just want uh- us to celebrate and just to be happy and not to be sad. >> one day he just called me over. just, you know, this high pitched voice. we gets excited. where's that rollins at? and i turned around like me, like, what did i do? am i in trouble? like willie calling me over and every day he would call me over to his table just to talk. talk stats compare things. and i'm like, willie, come on, that's that's not fair. willie but if you ask him a question, you want to talk trash. we can do that. and that's one thing i learned about him is that although he's willie the legend, when he was in the clubhouse, he just wanted to be one of the fellas. always always was. and always generous, always nice with his time. so to be able to spend that time with them as a person, uh- meant the world. >> and that was a great story from jimmy rollins last month. the alameda kid, who played a long time with the phillies, won an nl mvp, was a world series champion, but did play the giants towards the end of his career. and he told a great story about meeting willie mays.

john miller is speaking right now, and of course, this is set to go from about 4 to 6, probably a little bit longer as all the dignitaries are set to speak at the podium. can't wait to hear some of the stories they tell of willie mays life. and i think that's the one thing that's kind of stuck out to me over the last month or so. it's been more of a celebration of willie's life than supreme sadness. of course, there's sadness when he passed away 93 years old, but i think a lot of people are celebrating the life and legacy, and there's a positive vibe out here at the ballpark. >> guys, it looks like there's a lot of people behind you paying their respects. >> absolutely, yeah. the fans were were lined up along the street over there. king. they were wrapped around towards mccovey cove. they wanted to get in here. there's also places where they can sign uh. any personal notes to the mays family. so a lot of fans have been signing the big sheets of paper with willie's picture on it, and there's some flowers left as well towards the statue. so these fans, every fan has a story, whether they saw him play, whether it was their father or grandpa, mother, someone. there's a willie mays story. we all know baseball is generational, so it's been great to speak with the fans as well to get their memories of willie

mays. everyone has a story and they're all very happy and positive guys. >> yeah, thank you chris. willie mays one of one. >> that's right. yeah uh- and it was a nice afternoon at the ballpark for this event. absolutely not like the last few days. >> we'll get ready for more triple digits. here's spencer. >> yeah, well, it's great that the heat broke for the celebration of willie mays life, right? what better cause could you have for that? here's a look at satellite image of the radar and the composite radar and satellite composite in the marine layer is back. not for long, but it is deeper and more vigorous than we have seen a marine layer in a long time. and the onshore flow is generating some pretty impressive breezes. now, gusts up to 35mph in oakland right now. so that cooling effect has been felt today, even though it's been warm in our inland areas. and even though the heat wave isn't over, we're getting a little bit of a break. as you can see, most locations are a couple of degrees cooler now than at this time yesterday. here's a view from emeryville looking at the fog about to overtake san francisco, where current temperature reading is 65 degrees 69. also in oakland, we've got 79 at hayward, 83 at

san jose, redwood city 76 and 61 at half moon bay. and there's the fog at the golden gate, along with the breeze up north. it's 82 degrees right now at santa rosa. petaluma 77, napa 76 and 94 degrees each at fairfield, concord and livermore. so let's check out our forecast headlines. a slight cooling inland for today and tomorrow. just a two day break from the extreme heat temperatures in the 90s in the inland areas where we have seen triple digits for about the last five days, the intense heat returns midweek, wednesday through friday in fact, with inland highs in the one hundreds in the triple digits once again and heat advisory for the bay area has been extended now until 8 p.m. friday. so let's take a look at this. 8 p.m. friday. this is the heat advisory for all of the bay area and it's an excessive heat warning for parts of solano county and mendocino county and all of lake county. so again, the heat is going to be with us for a while. we just have to do the best we can to deal with it. stay hydrated, try to limit your outdoor strenuous activities, wear lightweight clothing and all that sort of

thing. so tonight we'll see the marine layer pushing again across the bay and locally inland, providing its cooling effect. for one more day, it'll start to burn back to the coastline around midday tomorrow. overnight, low temperatures will be generally in the upper 50s tonight and then tomorrow's highs low 60s at the coast, mid to upper 70s around the bay shoreline. upper 80s to low and mid 90s inland. that's a nice break from the triple digits that we've seen day after day after day. but they're coming back. here's the accuweather seven day forecast wednesday. inland highs up to about 106. thursday. inland highs up to around 108. friday. still hot, up to about 104 105. in the warmest inland spots down to mid 90s on saturday as the heat recedes a bit. a more typical july range of temperatures on sunday, some low 90s inland, but they bounce back up to mid 90s on monday. so it's we're not really getting much of a break even after the triple digits leave. it's still going to be pretty warm inland, but there's some relief at the at the end of the week. >> yeah, yeah. it's not 120 like

yeah. >> so not like vegas 120 yeah. >> better around the bay. yeah. thank you spencer. >> all right. in the north bay there is an urgent request today from first responders in the russian river valley. and they say, don't go into that river without a life jacket if you can't swim. >> that plea coming days after two people drowned on the russian river. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has more from monte rio. >> we get thousands of people. we probably had 2000 people down there that saturday when we had the second drowning monte rio fire chief steve backman says beaches on the russian river were packed last week for the july 4th holiday, when temperatures spiked into triple digits. >> but there was tragedy. two people drowned in separate incidents wednesday and saturday. search and rescue teams were on duty searching near monte rio, where the river is 30ft deep. in some spots, the circumstances of the deaths are still under investigation. we tell people please do not get in the water if you can't swim and if you can't swim, wear a flotation device. >> being on a board doesn't do

any good because you fall off the board. you're done. >> warning signs about river danger are posted near monte rio public beach in both english and spanish. >> the other thing is, if you're going to be drinking, don't try to go swimming. if you're drinking way too much alcohol doesn't help anything. >> yes, don't drink too much. >> saban kelly from alameda is enjoying a beach day with friends and some precautions. >> buddy system is always good, making sure like someone knows where you are and like has their eyes on you in case you need help. especially when you're in a place that has no lifeguard or anyone else to kind of watch your back. >> the sonoma county sheriff's department says there's been four drownings on the russian river so far this year, and a total of 31 deaths since 2019. staff at monroe public beach will give you a life jacket like this for the entire day, for free if you need it. yeah, it's a look, but it could save your life. >> anyone who is on the beach and needs one, we rent them for free. so yeah, we're we're all for that because, you know, that's safety is the best out here because you never know what could happen out there with more

criticism from homeless advocates. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes with a look at the plan, as well as the problem. >> major concerns about more than third of the waterways in the south bay are set to be addressed tuesday. valley water's board will vote on an ordinance that could displace encampments along those areas. the purpose of that ordinance is to lay out a behavior that's prohibited in what's called water resources protection zones. that's any area where valley water holds land rights from small creeks to the guadalupe river. the ordinance would detail what would be prohibited in those zones. that includes encampments, disturbances to neighbors, and hazardous activities. trash chemicals, garbage, dog bodies, you name it. >> our rivers and creeks or not being environmentally taken care

of. we do the best we can, but the destruction is overwhelming, valley water said. >> staff are also facing dangerous conditions. >> they're having more and more run ins with uh, with unsheltered people who reside there. >> advocates say many of the people live along creeks to keep cool, with one person already dying from the heat. since the first of the month and overall homeless deaths on the rise, they said there are other ways to solve problems. >> work with advocates to try and schedule things, to have advocates on hand who usually have good relationships with camps, but also keeping the creeks clean. make sure that you always have porta potties with wash stations at all these creek areas. >> enforcement would include a warning and education first, with 72 hours to voluntarily relocate the next step would be a misdemeanor charge with a fine or jail time as punishment, valley water said that would be a last resort. it ultimately hopes that local governments and social service agencies can work with them to create an overall solution. >> because somebody's putting in jail, they're out in 72 hours.

that didn't set up, that didn't solve anything. but if they need some kind of help and we can get them the bedding, the shelterin, whatever they may need, of course, but we also got to point out that we're serious. >> the board votes on the ordinance tuesday. if it's approved, it will go into effect in 30 days. in the south bay, zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> a federal appeals court is clearing the way for san francisco to expand homeless encampment sweeps. the ninth circuit ended an injunction that stopped the city from forcing unhoused people to move when shelter space is not available. this comes in the wake of last month's landmark supreme court ruling finding cities can't cite people for sleeping on the streets. san francisco still has to let people pick up belongings that are cleared in sweeps. >> we are learning more about those white house visits from a parkinson's specialist, plus, we're tracking barrel from houston after the storm passed through, leaving damage throughout the city. >> i'm abc's melissa don. coming up, we have an updated report on
