once, but twice in the past few weeks. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm julian glover. the rabbi at chabad synagogue filed a report with police, but so far, no arrests have been made. >> today, abc seven news reporter ryan curry spoke to the rabbi, who hopes more will be done to protect the jewish community from anti-semitic attacks. >> you can hear the large bang the moment this person throws a giant rock at the chabad center in oakland, but this wasn't the only time. twice in recent weeks, someone came by and threw a rock at their window. >> that's where the impact was, and you can see the cracks going throughout the whole. all of us. >> and rabbi dovid lepkowski says the glass was installed just a couple months ago. it's thick, ballistic or bullet resistant glass. he put it in to keep his congregation safe. >> what's stopping someone? a terrorist, from coming by? so? so we anticipated bullets, you know, god forbid, if an attack happens. we anticipated graffiti, but we didn't anticipate rock throwing. >> why do you think somebody would do something like this?

>> to me, it's clear that it's antisemitism coming up, both he and the anti-defamation league say antisemitism has been rising in california since the start of the israel-hamas war. >> mark levine runs the bay area chapter and says people deserve a safe place to worship. >> it's wrong. we need elected leaders, community leaders, faith based leaders in oakland and the bay area to step up and denounce this. but we also need oakland leaders to make sure that everyone, no matter their faith, can pray safely. >> the rabbi has seen evidence of antisemitism firsthand, even as early as this past december, when someone destroyed his congregation's menorah and threw it into lake merritt. the rabbi did speak with oakland police this afternoon. police told him they are looking into it. >> they promised to be on the case to do whatever they could. they started canvasing. we're hoping that they'll be on top of it and we'll see. and we're hopeful. but actions speak louder than words. >> we reached out to oakland police and we haven't heard back yet. each panel of glass, the rabbi says, will cost at least $10,000 to fix. the rocks that

were thrown are on display. rabbi lebkowsky says he will use them in a future building project. >> we're going to build with it instead of, you know, as a dark and negative act of vandalism or anti-semitism. we're going to turn it into something positive and we're going to use it. >> the rabbi understands tensions are high, but he thinks there is no need for violence like this in oakland. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> now to a story we first brought to you on friday, when more than 80 people ransacked the 76 gas station off of hegenberger road. well, today we reached out to police for the latest on that investigation and also to see how the store owner and employees are doing. abc seven news reporter lena howland is following that story. >> oakland police staging around the 76 gas station on hegenberger. this three days after the gas station was ransacked by a group of around 80 people following a sideshow in the area. >> 40 minutes you could do a lot of damage in 40 minutes. that's

how long they were in here. >> sam ardai is the manager and co-owner of this gas station. he believes the vandals caused upwards of $100,000 in damage. that includes the $22,000 taken from their own atm. he says the only employee working the gas station's window at the time left for fear of their own safety and called police. >> they said there was nothing we could do. you cannot just file a report online that's a respawn. >> he says it wasn't until nine hours after the incident when an officer was sent to the scene. police said they weren't aware of the magnitude of the incident until seeing this video. >> it was being looted. it's lawless. >> ken houston is director of oakland's beautification council. he had a backpack with all of his devices stolen and later hacked while parked outside of his business on hegenberger just two weeks ago. >> this is a business that pays taxes to keep our city going. would you want to stay there and continue your business, or would

you move like denny's right down the street? or would you move like in and out? >> oakland city council member trevor reed represents this district. she went to the 76 gas station on monday to meet with the owner. >> it has really shaken us in the midst of seeing a 70% plus reduction in crime. the money that these businesses have been working to harden their stores and to protect their workers and to keep this regional gateway alive to hear and see what's happened. it's been devastating. >> and she believes their work is far from over. >> and it still shows us that there's a lot more that we have to do to protect these businesses, our workers. and just this tourism corridor so that we can really, you know, keep our businesses protected, our workers supported in this court are alive. >> in the meantime, maday plans to have two employees at all times and is considering closing closer to sunset while asking for more police to keep watch. >> i start doing their job patrol this area more often. i

street. that's just on the other side of the park. police in san francisco say they did not arrest anyone last year. things were very different when police made about 100 arrests. many of them were teens. more than 500 people showed up to this year's event. one man was hurt skateboarding down the hill, but his injuries are not life threatening. police say someone vandalized a patrol car and they're looking for suspects there. >> let's take a live look outside. it is day seven of our heat wave. there is some good news, though. some of the excessive heat warnings have been downgraded to heat advisories. but those advisories have now been extended here. to break it all down is abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. hi, sandhya. hi there. yeah, ama, right now we're in a temporary break, but we're going to see another round of heat developing here. and that's why those advisories were extended. so let's talk about what it looks like. this is welcome relief from our mount tam cam. the marine layer showing up. this is the second day where we've seen temperatures going down. most areas are running cooler right now by four degrees

in hayward and novato. as you will notice, the onshore breezes have certainly picked up, gusting to 35 at oakland. that's going to help to continue to carry the marine layer along. so when you look at those temperatures right now, this is what you would expect to see. i mean, temperatures are still a few degrees above average by 5 to 10 degrees in some areas. but 90s inland, 60s along the coastline. that is all going to change middle of this week. so the heat advisories for the inland valleys and mountains extended until 8 p.m. friday for the san francisco bay shoreline, carquinez strait and delta. it is now going to go up from 11 a.m. wednesday until 8 p.m. friday. what this all means is we still have a risk of heat related illnesses, especially since it's been day after day of this really hot weather that we've been dealing with. so still, take it easy out there. i'll be back to show you exactly how hot it's going to get. mid to late this week. julian okay. >> we appreciate it. thank you so much sandy, for staying on top of this for the last week.

now a measles exposure is leading to a health alert down in the south bay. santa clara county health officials say an infected person went to two restaurants last monday a starbucks in los gatos and taqueria los pericos in santa cruz. then on tuesday that same person took a flight from san jose mineta international to chicago. >> we are working with the cdc, with the state health department and other agencies to investigate and identify any individuals here in our county who may have been exposed and provide them with recommendations on how they can stay safe. >> okay, so if you think you've been exposed, you should first check to see if you've been vaccinated against measles. those who have not should call their doctor as soon as possible. also you'll want to look out for symptoms like a fever or unexplained rash. symptoms could appear up to three weeks after being exposed. >> if you thought you could move on from covid, think again. there's an uptick underway in many expect cases to keep increasing in california and the bay area as the summer progresses. abc seven news

reporter leslie brinkley dug into the strategies that might help you skip getting sick from the new variant being called the flirt variant. >> we're playing a better game of covid roulette. that is one that's more in our favor now than it was four years ago. >> so how to best hedge your bets against this new covid variant called flirt for starters, data from wastewater samples like what's displayed in this graph from santa clara county, shows we're experiencing a new peak of activity here in the bay area. covid is spreadin, wastewater is our sort of early, early warning system. >> it's the best we have. >> if you have cold or flu symptoms. now, consider this the tests that we buy over the counter, the tests that we get our doctor's offices or at the pharmacy, they work very well for these flirt variants. >> as for masking up, when i go out and about to my shopping in berkeley, uh- when i'm on planes or in airports these days, it's a very small percentage of

people who are wearing masks. so i would estimate 5. >> the experts agree wearing a good mask does reduce your risk, but it's no guarantee there are vaccines to consider. according to the cdc, the 2324 version of the vaccine can increase protection against symptomatic illness by 54. even with the new variant, very few people got it in california, only 36% of seniors are up to date on the latest vaccine and only 10% of adults under 50. the 20 2425 version should be available by september. but should you get a vaccine now? it depends on your health, your plans and underlying conditions. just keep in mind you have to wait a minimum of four months between vaccines. >> i'm probably going to wait until the new variant booster whenever that becomes available. i'll be one of the first in line, just like the flu, the peak season for covid this year is expected to be late fall and

winter. >> despite all the cases circulating now in the east bay. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. >> longtime bay area congressmember john garamendi is battling cancer. garamendi revealed in a statement that he's undergoing treatment for a form of blood cancer. the representative for parts of contra costa and solano counties says the outpatient treatment is expected to last a few months. 79 year old garamendi plans to continue with his congressional duties during that time, but he will limit his travel to washington and cut back on some public appearances and events. >> coming up, a public memorial for giants legend willie mays is underway right now. we're going to take you live to oracle park. for more on the star studded tribute. abc7 news at five.

mays. the public memorial service began just over an hour ago at oracle park. abc seven news sports anchor chris alvarez is there. chris, quite the turn off to send mays out, giving us a chance. >> yeah, absolutely. and right now, former president bill clinton is actually speaking at the podium on behalf of his late great friend, willie mays. we've had a just so many people of the presidents here. you know, it's a big deal. and there he is right there. you see him? he's finishing up his speech. he's had this crowd on the edge of their seats. he got a standing ovation, a very powerful ceremony so far. the american flag was presented to willie son. of course, willie spoke or willie served time in the us army back when he was playing. imagine what his stats would have been if he wasn't in the army. but of course he had a great duty to his country. you see, john miller there, he is leading the ceremonies. you see his godson, barry bonds, the legendary giant also in attendance. everyone who's anyone is here larry baer, willie brown, you see right there in those pictures, there's an amazing choir singing gospel

music as fans found their seats just after 3:00 this afternoon, the jumbotron playing a slideshow of his great life and career. that right there a very powerful moment of the passing of the flag to his son, michael. a host of people are set to speak, including barry bonds and his son michael. and right now we've heard so far from rob manfred, the giants or excuse me, the mlb commissioner and former san francisco mayor willie brown, because willie was not just a baseball player, willie was a world changer us in san francisco. >> and willie mays embrace me. i am telling you, the generosity of this extraordinary human being, the most gifted baseball player ever in the history of baseball was also the most gifted person i've ever met. >> there's never been a better representative of baseball's magic than willie mays. he

a 50 foot boat about two miles off the shore of redwood city. that fire was reported around 130. the boat owners and their dog were safely rescued. no word yet from investigators on what started that fire. >> a group of hikers is safe after going missing in the mountains west of lake tahoe, where a wildfire is burning, the placer county sheriff's office located the hikers via helicopter along the palisades creek trail this morning. two members of the falcon crew. they had to drop in, then led the group of 13 to hike out. thankfully, they are all okay. the fire has burned 169 acres since it started yesterday. no

containment so far. the royal fire is part of the tahoe national forest just south of i-80. it's near soda springs and the sugar bowl ski area. >> all right, firefighters have their work cut out for them. let's get another check on the weather. >> yeah, we check back in now with sandhya patel for a look at the forecast. and the relief. hopefully should be on the way soon. sandhya. >> yeah, i mean, we we're getting relief right now julian and ama and that's going to continue tomorrow for our inland areas before everything changes again. >> so let's talk about when it's all going to change. the heat risk is going up on wednesday. areas inland will go into the moderate to major heat risk categories. so for the time being it's not as bad. but that is all going to look very different. and you can see why on wednesday you're topping 100 degrees in our hottest inland valleys. you will notice on thursday it's even hotter getting you up into antioch. livermore, 108 degrees. that's brutal. friday is still in the triple digits inland, but notice

the coast will remain in the comfort zone. so high pressure taking a little bit of a back seat, allowing the bay area to enjoy the cool, refreshing marine layer. but that is all going to change as the ridge rebuilds. so be prepared for that midweek. for the time being though, we do have fog on live doppler seven right along the coastline. it's showing up on our sutro tower camera right over the city. you can see that you're comforted by a 64 degree reading and certainly breezy out there. oakland 6883, in san jose, and you're at 75, in redwood city. bright skies in san jose right now. temperatures in santa rosa in the 80s. 70s petaluma, napa. you get out inland in the east bay and you have some low 90s right now. our hottest spots this afternoon got up into the mid 90s, so that's not too bad. from our walnut creek camera. seeing the sun right now overnight tonight fog expands across the bay. it will push into some of our valleys. that marine layer has deepened tomorrow. cooling continues inland and wednesday through friday we are expecting a return of the triple digit heat. so

this prolonged heat wave is going to continue. but you're just temporarily getting a break from the extreme heat. the marine layer pushing in across the bay at 9 p.m. and even into some of our valleys by tomorrow morning. i wouldn't be surprised if some of you wake up to mist and drizzle first thing tomorrow morning. the fog will pull back to the coast and then return back into our in bayside communities later on in the evening. your morning temperatures will be in the 50s and the 60s. a lot of fog along the coast, and you will see partly cloudy skies elsewhere tomorrow afternoon, 86 in san jose in the south bay, 91 in gilroy on the peninsula, 77 in palo alto, low 60s near the coast. you're going to hang on to some of the fog well into the afternoon. 68 downtown san francisco, north bay temperatures 84. in santa rosa, 81 vallejo, san rafael in the east bay. take advantage of this. it's going to be pleasant. 73 in oakland, 79 in fremont. inland areas, 91 fairfield livermore, 89, in pleasanton and in concord. as you check out the

accuweather seven day forecast after tomorrow, those temperatures are going to come up into the triple digits. once again, it gets into the dangerous category on thursday when you're up to 108 inland 90s around the bay. the coast will remain in the 60s. it will dial those temperatures back a bit on friday, but you'll have to wait until this weekend before we all notice those temperatures dropping down into the low 90s by sunday. inland low 60s coast and back to our seasonal pattern on monday. so, julian, i mean, it's going to be a brief respite. and then temperatures right back up again mid week. >> yeah. all right. thanks sandhya. >> in new york apparently it's so hot even bridges are malfunctioning. officials in new york city say the third avenue bridge is stuck. the bridge got so hot in the 90 degree weather. the steel expanded so much it can't close. and because of that, crews on boats are spraying water on the bridge. that's what you're looking at here. trying to cool it down enough to get it to fit in the meantime, big traffic headaches between the bronx and manhattan.
