>> oh, you know that sound? that's what so many people heard across the bay area for the 4th of july. and now we are seeing just how destructive fireworks like these were. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm julian glover. >> most fireworks are illegal in the bay area, but by the sound of it, the last few nights, that does not seem to matter. >> every year we tell the same story. fireworks sparking, fires hurting people and disrupting neighborhoods. so how did bay area cities respond? >> that's what we asked abc seven news reporter luz pena to find out today. she is live here in the studio with those results. luis. >> julian and emma. several cities across the bay area say they had been preparing for the 4th of july. in oakland, the police department said they had a team monitoring their tip lin, and officers were deployed to several locations, but fireworks were still visible and loud throughout that city, as well as many others across the bay. so

we asked, was anybody arrested for illegal fireworks? this was a common sound throughout the bay area. >> it was pretty darn loud and it got even louder as the night went on. it just sounds like world war three in oakland, this resident said she stayed indoors hearing a mix between fireworks and gunfire, but she, the gunfire because, you know, it's unsafe for people, the local people to walk around in oakland's fruitvale a couple recorded fireworks going off for hours once in a while. >> we did hear a police car going by, but, you know, there was so much smoke and sound and, you know, just everything. >> and so where were the officers? we interviewed the oakland captain in charge of the 4th of july deployment. there was a lot of fireworks going on almost simultaneously for several hours throughout the evening. >> and so just resource wise, it's very difficult and

challenging to actually respond to all the calls for service, captain paez said. >> they had a strategic deployment, sending officers to areas that were problematic last year, but this time ahead of the fourth this year, what we did is we actually were proactive and responded to those areas before they're able to set up regarding arrests, oakland said they arrested seven people. santa clara county sheriff said no arrests or citations were given out. santa rosa police said 22 arrests were made. we contacted sfpd asking about their numbers. we're still waiting to hear back. the city's health department did confirm zuckerberg, san francisco general hospital received eight patients from july third to the fifth, with blast injuries from fireworks to the face and hands, this resident wants police to do more. she left town with her dogs knowing this would happen. >> it's sort of like a bomb to them. >> fire danger was of high concern throughout the bay area in contra costa county. the fire department received 1100 calls for service and reported 310

incidents on the evening of the fourth, we responded to over 90 exterior fires. >> we can say that the majority of the fires that we responded to on the fourth were caused by fireworks in other cities across the bay area, fire crews and law enforcement agencies were out in full force. >> santa clara county sheriff reported 48 reports of illegal fireworks. alameda county fire received 199 reports. santa rosa police over 2700 calls to their communication center, and many of these agencies were proactive and confiscated. fireworks around the holiday in oakland, the police department confiscated more than 500 pounds of fireworks, so despite the illegal shows, captain baez said this year was a success for their city. luz pena abc seven news. >> all right, luz, thank you. and fireworks are especially dangerous right now because of our high fire risk. >> we are seven days into an extended heat wave here in the bay area, and meteorologist sandhya patel has been tracking

it for the last seven days. sandhya, a cooler temperatures finally in some places today. >> yeah, julian and definitely welcome relief here in the bay area. temperatures dropping off some more. the cooling started yesterday and you can pretty much see why the numbers dropped some more. the golden gate bridge is pretty socked in. the marine layer is about 1500 feet deep. the sea breeze has helped to drive some of those temperatures down by three degrees in san francisco, down two in livermore right now. but when you take a look at the numbers inland in places like brentwood and concord, when you're in the low 90s, as opposed to 110 degrees, i mean, this is what you kind of expect. 60 in the city. unfortunately, the heat advisories for the inland valleys and mountains got extended until 8 p.m. friday because we're expecting another wave of hot weather and it is going to get dangerous. of course, the san francisco bay shoreline will be under that heat advisory, but that begins at 11 a.m. wednesday. it runs until 8 p.m. friday. once again, it's going to be increased risk of heat related illnesses. so

the risk on wednesday will go into the moderate to major category for our inland areas shaded in oranges and reds. here's a quick preview of how hot you can expect it to get on wednesday. it's going to be over 100 degrees in places like antioch, fairfield, 104 degrees. so even hotter on thursday. how about 108? in livermore and in fairfield? i'll be back to let you know when we will finally break out of this long duration hot weather. the heat wave that we've been dealing with. ama. all right, sandhya, thank you so much. we'll check back the lake fire in santa barbara county has ballooned to the largest wildfire in california right now. >> it exploded in size over the weekend, burning more than 20,000 acres in the los padres national forest off 101. the fire is threatening homes and other property, including neverland ranch, formerly owned by the late michael jackson. flames reached the property's perimeter today and new evacuation orders have been issued. containment is at just 8. a group of hikers is safe

after being unaccounted for in the mountains west of lake tahoe, where a wildfire is burning. the placer county sheriff's office located the hikers via helicopter along the palisades creek trail this morning. two members of the falcon crew dropped in and then led the group of 13 to hike out the latest mapping shows the royal fire has burned 154 acres since it started yesterday. it's in the tahoe national forest near soda springs and the sugar bowl ski area. there is no containment. good news on the wildfire that's burning near yosemite in mariposa county. containment on the french fire is now up to 60. since starting on thursday, several evacuation orders have been lifted. the french fire has burned a little more than 900 acres. you can see wildfires in california at a glance with our abc seven news wildfire tracker. find it on abc seven news.com/fire map. >> there is an urgent request today from first responders in the russian river valley. do not get into the river without life jacket. if you can't swim. this is a really important message.

after two people drowned in the russian river. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has more from monterio. >> we get thousands of people. we probably had 2000 people down there that saturday when we had the second drowning monte rio fire chief steve backman says beaches on the russian river were packed last week for the july 4th holiday, when temperatures spiked into triple digits. >> but there was tragedy. two people drowned in separate incidents wednesday and saturday. search and rescue teams were on duty searching near monte rio, where the river is 30ft deep. in some spots, the circumstances of the deaths are still under investigation. >> we tell people please do not get in the water if you can't swim and if you can't swim, wear a flotation device. being on a board doesn't do any good because you fall off the board. you're done. >> warning signs about river danger are posted near monte rio public beach in both english and spanish. >> the other thing is, if you're going to be drinking, don't try to go swimming. if you're

drinking way too much alcohol doesn't help anything. >> yes, don't drink too much. >> saban kelly from alameda is enjoying a beach day with friends and some precautions. >> buddy system is always good, making sure like someone knows where you are and like has their eyes on you in case you need help. especially when you're in a place that has no lifeguard or anyone else to kind of watch your back. >> the sonoma county sheriff's department says there's been four drownings on the russian river so far this year, and a total of 31 deaths since 2019. staff at monterey public beach will give you a life jacket like this for the entire day, for free if you need it. yeah, it's a look, but it could save your life. >> anyone who is on the beach and needs one, we rent them for free. so yeah, we're we're all for that because, you know, that's safety is the best out here. because you never know what could happen out there. >> with more hot weather coming. the chief says have fun on the river, but be safe. >> come out and enjoy yourself and be careful, please. that's all we ask. be careful. use your head in sonoma county. >> cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> great advice. not much is

left of a powerboat after a fire on the bay. this afternoon. take a look at this video from sky seven. quite dramatic flames engulfed the 50 foot vessel called lucid dream, about two miles off the shore of redwood city. this afternoon. a man, woman and dog were on board. they all escaped safely thanks to a good samaritan. the regular redwood city fire boat that firefighters use is out of service. by the time they got on another boat, the burning vessel had drifted into the shallows where it couldn't be reached. the boat burned down to the waterline, but the diesel tanks on board stored below the waterline, might still be intact. no word yet from investigators on how this fire started. an electric scooter is to blame for sparking this fire at a four story apartment building. it happened this morning on leavenworth street near mcallister in san francisc. firefighters say the scooter was charging when it caught fire. crews put out the flames quickly. only one apartment burned. one person was taken to the hospital with minor injurie. >> the manager of an oakland gas station says he might have to make major changes following a

ransacking caught on video right here. some 80 people stormed the 76 station out on hagenburg road around 4:00 in the morning friday, causing an estimated $100,000 in damage and stealing $22,000 from the atm. station manager sam maday says his clerk called police and was told to file a report online. officers showed up nine hours later, start doing their job. >> patrol this area more often. i can't say this area because right now it's getting where the whole city of oakland is not safe, police say they were not aware of the magnitude of the situation until they saw the video. >> the station manager says he is now going to have two employees on duty at all times, and is considering closing closer to sunset. you can look up issues that affect public safety where you live. we have data showing trends for oakland, san francisco and san jose. the abc seven neighborhood safety tracker is on the front page of our website, abc seven news.com.

carrying cars. sam trans tells us the truck was on the tracks at the broadway station when the train approached. the view from sky seven shows the back of the truck appears to be crooked. 67 people were on board the train. thankfully, no one was hurt. caltrain says service was delayed by up to 30 minutes in

both directions because of this. neighbors in contra costa county are cleaning up today after this. yeah. water main flooded the yard of five homes there. the break on tara hills drive and kevin road in the tar hills area sent water gushing down the street last night. two homes lost power. water rather as east bay municipal utility district crews searched for the source of that break. they're still looking into what caused the problem. >> new developments today. in the case of a man who intentionally drove his family off devil's slide. dharmesh patel will take part in a mental health program for two years while on supervised release with gps monitoring. criminal proceedings have been suspended. patel was charged with attempted murder after he drove his family's tesla off highway one in january of 2023. his wife and two children were inside the car with him. everyone survived. the lawsuits are getting started after the cyber attack. that still making it hard for patelco credit union customers to access their money. a law firm says it's seeking class action status

in a lawsuit over the breach last month. patelco says it's processing transactions again ten days after the ransomware attack that took down its online systems. people still can't access their bank accounts online. company doesn't know when account services will be running again, but it promises consumers money is safe. >> a measles exposure is leading to a health alert in the south bay. >> we are working with the cdc, with the state health department and other agencies to investigate and identify any individuals here in our county who may have been exposed and provide them with recommendations on how they can stay safe. >> santa clara county health officials say an infected person went to two restaurants last monday. a starbucks in los gatos and a taqueria in santa cruz. then on tuesday, that person took a southwest flight from san jose mineta international airport to chicago. anyone who thinks they were exposed to check their vaccination status and keep an eye out for symptoms like a fever or an unexplained rash. >> all right, a check on our

weather. still hot. maybe not quite as hot, though. >> we're going in the right direction, right? finally, a little bit cooler. we check back in now with sandia. yeah, definitely needed that break from the heat. >> and we are getting it. i mean, it's not extreme is what i should say. julian and ama, take a look at this live picture. the cooling started yesterday and it was continuing today because this marine layer has been ramping up the sea breeze has come in. so right now you can see sutro tower there in the background. that marine layer from emeryville camera 1500 feet deep sfo right now 24 mile an hour winds. you will notice that out towards the delta 23 in fairfield and this wind will continue to cool you off tonight. so let's go hour by hour, 7:00 this evening. it is going to be breezy if you're stepping out and you're going to be along the coast. good idea to take an extra layer. 7:00 in the morning. winds subside a bit, but then they pick right back up again. this is what's going to help to drive some of those temperatures inland down even more so our hot spots today got

up into the mid 90s. tomorrow we're going to drop you down into the upper 80s to low 90s. as we look at high pressure live doppler seven, high pressure is taking kind of a back seat here in the bay area allowing that marine influence to come in, but it's going to rebuild. and when it does, starting middle of this week, you're going to notice the heat returning the intensity of the heat returning on live doppler seven, we certainly have the fog along the coast. it's already started to move over across parts of the bay from our pier 39 camera. pretty socked in san francisco, 60 degrees 67. in oakland it is in the 80s around places like san jose, redwood city, 78 and 57, in half moon bay from our east bay hills. camera you can see the marine layer way in the distance there. 74 in santa rosa, 68 in petaluma. you're in the 80s around fairfield, 92 though in concord. and one other live picture from our sfo camera. certainly clouds are stacked up overnight tonight. the fog expands across the bay. it will push into some of our valleys by

morning. tomorrow. cooling continues inland and wednesday through friday triple digit heat returns to the forecast tonight at 7:00. you'll notice the fog not just near the coast, but around parts of the bay shoreline. it will expand by tomorrow morning. many areas will be waking up to gray skies, even a little mist and drizzle along the coast. not out of the question. and then in the afternoon, the marine layer pulls back to the coast and comes back in. so we will definitely be able to save a little on our ac as well. you get that natural ac going. your morning temperatures in the 50s and the 60s. most of the fog will be heaviest along the coastline, but you're going to see it right around the bay and into some of our valleys. as i mentioned, a wide range of temperatures tomorrow afternoon in the south bay. los gatos, 9286, in san jose, on the peninsula, you're looking at 77. in mountain view's 81, in redwood city, low 60s coast side will hang on to the fog well into the afternoon. downtown san francisco, 68 degrees 64, in daly city, north bay.

temperatures 81, in vallejo, 80 in napa, 81, san rafael up to 84, in santa rosa heading into the east bay. low 70s from richmond to berkeley. oakland pretty pleasant there. 81 in castro valley head inland and it's going to be warm, but not excessive. 89 in concord, 91 degrees for you in livermore. looking at the accuweather seven day forecast after tomorrow, temperatures are going up and it's going to sizzle mid to late in the workweek. we're talking about triple digit heat, hottest day is going to be thursday 108 inland 90s right around the bay. but the good news is the coast is going to remain in the 60s with enough of a marine influence. this weekend dropping down to the 90s inland, which is a little more in line with what we would expect. >> and julian, okay, we'll take that. yeah. thank you sandhya. >> appreciate it. a push to build a better bay area by cleaning up local waterways is being met with some criticism from homeless advocates. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes has a look at the plan, and also the problem.

>> major concerns about more than a third of the waterways in the south bay are set to be addressed tuesday. valley water board will vote on an ordinance that could displace encampments along those areas. >> the purpose of that ordinance is to lay out a behavior that's prohibited in what's called water resources protection zones. >> that's any area where valley water holds land rights from small creeks to the guadalupe river. the ordinance would detail what would be prohibited in those zones. that includes encampments, disturbances to neighbors, and hazardous activities, trash, chemicals, garbage, dog bodies, you name i. >> our rivers and creeks are not being environmentally taken care of. we do the best we can, but the destruction is overwhelming, valley water said staff are also facing dangerous conditions. >> they're having more and more run ins with uh, with unsheltered people who reside there. >> advocates say many of the people live along creeks to keep cool, with one person already

dying from the heat. since the first of the month and overall homeless deaths on the rise, they said there are other ways to solve problems, work with advocates to try and schedule things to have advocates on hand who usually have good relationships with camps, but also keeping the creeks clean. >> make sure that you always have porta potties with wash stations at all these creek areas. >> enforcement would include a warning and education first, with 72 hours to voluntarily relocate the next step would be a misdemeanor charge with a fine or jail time as punishment, valley water said that would be a last resort. it ultimately hopes that local governments and social service agencies can work with them to create an overall solution. >> because somebody's putting in jail, they're out in 72 hours. that didn't set up, that didn't solve anything. but if they need some kind of help and we can get them the bedding, the sheltering, whatever they may need, of course. but we also got to point out that we're serious. >> the board votes on the ordinance tuesday. if it's approved, it will go into effect in 30 days in the south bay.

when someone destroyed his congregation's menorah and threw it into lake merritt. the rabbi did speak with oakland police this afternoon. police told him they are looking into it. >> they promised to be on the case to do whatever they could. they started canvasing. we're hoping that they'll be on top of it and we'll see. and we're hopeful. but actions speak louder than words. >> we reached out to oakland police and we haven't heard back yet. each panel of glass, the rabbi says, will cost at least $10,000 to fix. the rocks that were thrown are on display. rabbi lebkowsky says he will use them in a future building project. >> we're going to build with it instead of, you know, as a dark and negative act of vandalism or anti-semitism. we're going to turn it into something positive and we're going to use it. >> the rabbi understands tensions are high, but he thinks there is no need for violence like this in oakland. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> the man charged with murder for the death of a woman at a bart station still has not made his first court appearance. it's been delayed twice because he's not well enough to attend. another attempt is scheduled for

gains, while those gains weren't a lot, they were enough for both indices to hit new record highs. the dow closed at 39,344, down 31. the nasdaq ended the day with a gain of nearly 51 points, and the s&p 500 picked up five. boeing has agreed to a plea deal to avoid a criminal trial over two deadly 737 max crashes. the justice department announced the agreement last night, a week after attorneys for the victims families raised concerns about the deal. as part of the agreement, boeing will plead guilty to conspiracy to defraud the united states. the company

will also pay a $243 million fine and invest $455 million in safety programs. a federal judge still has to approve the deal. attorneys for victims families say the deal doesn't go far enough, and they plan to ask the judge to reject it. >> we are taking a live look at the bay area's three biggest airports san francisco bay, oakland international airport, san francisco international airport and san jose mineta international airport. while the tsa has a new record for most screenings ever in a single day, more than 3 million passengers went through airport checkpoints nationwide yesterday. that works out to be 35 passengers screened every second. wow. many airports predicted the 4th of july holiday would be a busy one. and it turns out it was. or from the 4th of july to christmas, bart is looking ahead, opening up some preorders for a new line of holiday merchandise. the collection includes a beanie, a scarf, an ugly sweater, which i kind of. i like it too. it's

off day, the team hosted a celebration of life for the say hey kid who passed away at age 93. and today we heard from baseball stars, executives, politicians, two presidents, former presidents all sharing their own willie mays stories. abc seven's chris alvarez joining us live from oracle park, where the ceremony just wrapped up. and chris, you know, a lot of laughs, a lot of emotions, some sadness, the complete mix. >> absolutely, larry. they call it a celebration of life for willie mays. and that's really what it was. but you you you mentioned it. the emotions were all over the place. but i would say overall the theme was complete happiness for the life that he lived 93 years. what a life he lived. and you mentioned

two presidents. one was here in attendance. bill clinton spoke. and then we had a video message from barack obama. and as you mentioned, it just finished up with michael, his son, finishing the final speech about a 4500 people were here in attendance that started around 3:00. we'll go to some of the video from earlier in the day when there was more sunlight out. as the fog starts to settle in over oracle park, you see willie, his son michael there with his godson barry of course, bill clinton flanked by larry baer and the former mayor willie brown, one of the more powerful moments right there, willie's son being presented with the american flag. of course, willie served time right in the middle of his career. mr. october reggie jackson in the house, dennis eckersley, as well as rickey henderson, some former oakland a's greats and just hall of fame people in the house listening to these great stories from giants uh- players and dignitaries. and here's some of the best moments from today's celebration of life. >> unconditional love. and yes, a butt kicking when i needed it. and then love again like a
