local storefront that's mission is to uplift the area around it. this nonprofit is trying to help build the community. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm julian glover, and i'm ama daetz. >> thieves broke into a retail business incubator and ended up stealing thousands of dollars worth of items needed for their operations. >> abc seven news reporter j.r stone was in oakland earlier
11:01 pm
tonight. he joins us here in the studio with the latest j.r. >> julian, the shirts in this nonprofit retail location say invest in oakland. the nonprofit seems to be doing that. but even so they have now become the target of thieves. >> they were able to basically kind of wedge the door and bust the glass and find a way to open the lock by reaching in. >> myles dodson is describing how a thief or thieves broke into his micro market spaces location in oakland. it's a nonprofit business incubator to help artists and merchants learn how to generate their own sustainable income. sunday, though, dodson started to receive notifications of a login attempt for a device that was supposed to be inside here, he arrived to a broken and unlocked door. >> i got here uh- this was all strung out on the floor. items from this back space have been thrown into this position and have been moved because we're a
11:02 pm
nonprofit, and because we're serving a demographic that is often not resourced by banks and other providers to be able to do what they do. uh- interruption as small as $500 can send us off of our path of doing the work that we're doing continuously, in this case, nearly $5,000 worth of electronic devices and audio equipment gone. >> miles is nonprofit, is located here on broadway. businesses in this area have been victimized as well. going forward, miles would like the city to take a closer look at traffic and blocking escape routes when these crimes are being committed. it's like if grand theft auto is a real game, people are playing this game in real life and having the opportunity to kind of have their way with anything that they want to do over the years, closing streets and changing light patterns to disrupt traffic and reduce crime has been used in cities across the country. the us department of justice reports that results are varied and were different
11:03 pm
depending on the city. still though, dodson believes more needs to be done and this could have an immediate impact. >> it's something i think we should, consider and something that should be on the table for finding ways to, to disrupt their ability to tear down oakland. >> miles tells me they are still deciding if they will file a police report here. he says other nearby businesses have done that and then lost their insurance, something he does not want to see happen. this seems to be a real new trend of businesses or groups not filing police reports over these fears or concerns. j.r stone, abc seven news j.r. thank you. >> tomorrow, the man charged with murder for a woman's death at a bart station is expected to make his first court appearance a week ago. police say 74 year-old khorasan dan dan was pushed at the powell street station. she hit an oncoming train and then the platform and later died. two prior court dates were delayed because the

man charged in her death hasn't been well enough to attend. you can look up the facts of public safety where you live. we have data showing trends for oakland, san francisco and san jose. the abc seven neighborhood safety tracker is on the front page of abc seven news.com. >> getting unhoused people off the streets and into housing is one of the biggest challenges, as we work to build a better bay area. and tonight we're diving into a major shift in san francisco's approach. the city could begin large scale sweeps of homeless encampments in just a matter of weeks after a federal appeals court paved the way today. abc seven news reporter tim johns explains san francisco's plan and the pushback from some who believe this is the wrong move. >> san francisco says it will resume sweeping homeless encampments in a matter of just weeks, following a recent supreme court ruling. on monday, an appeals court overturned an injunction that paused the city's efforts to enforce laws preventing people from staying out on the street, a move that city attorney david chu believes will allow officials to more effectively tackle the problem. chu says the city has spent
11:05 pm
billions of dollars on homeless services over the years. we could make all the offers of shelter and services that we wanted, but there were many moments where unhoused folks would simply reject or refuse services, reject offers of shelter. homelessness remains a top concern for san francisco voters. at monday night's mayoral debate hosted by ktvu. candidates laid out their plans to address the crisis, with the two currently not in city government promising stricter measures. >> i believe our sidewalks belong to everybody in san francisco. they belong to young children. they belong to young families. they belong to the elderly. >> under my watch, we are going to stand up 1500 shelter beds. in the first six months of my administration, people will no longer be able to resort to, nor will they be allowed to stay on our streets. >> there are many people in san francisco who disagree with the recent court rulings, though in some of them accused city leaders of using homeless people for political theater. that
11:06 pm
includes nisha kashyap, whose lawyers committee for civil rights was part of a lawsuit that sued the city over the rights of unhoused people. >> we as a community and our political leadership over decades, not just the current leadership, but going back decades, have made concerted choices to disinvest in affordable housing and instead invest in policies that push people out, kashyap believes these sweeps will only push people from place to place, and ultimately do little to solve the problem. >> she's instead calling on elected leaders to invest in what she believes are real solutions. >> cities will be in a race to the bottom to enact the most punitive, harmful ordinance or law that they can designed to push people out of their communities. >> there's still ongoing litigation regarding how the city deals with homeless folks property. a lower court is expected to rule on that soon. in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. >> leaders in the south bay are considering their own crackdown on encampments and tomorrow it heads to a vote. valley water

11:20 pm
looking at live views from our tower cameras, you can pretty much see why the marine layer deepened. the sea breeze came roaring in and the combination of the two dropped our temperatures. our hottest inland valleys were only in the low to mid 90s. today, as we check out live doppler seven, we do have an onshore breeze and the marine layer has pushed its way from the coast all the way across the bay. even places like santa rosa and san jose are seeing some cloud cover tonight. and the temperature is pretty much reflected. most areas other than the far inland valleys are in the 50s and 60s. so good sleeping weather tonight. losing a few more degrees this evening. four degrees cooler in san jose, running five degrees cooler in livermore from our exploratorium camera, you're seeing gray skies overnight tonight into the morning, areas of fog and spotty drizzle. tomorrow the cooling continues and wednesday through friday we're talking about a return of triple digit heat. the biggest difference is we're not expecting it to last for seven days, so that's going to be good news. but high pressure is going
11:21 pm
to briefly rebuild. and as it does, we're going to notice that the heat advisories and the warnings and all that comes back here in the bay area. but for the time being, you will notice much of the western u.s. is dealing with this heat wave. so we're not alone in this. our heat advisory doesn't go up until wednesday morning. so tomorrow you're all right wednesday afternoon. notice those triple digits while inland it is going to only get hotter on thursday up to 108 degrees. the good news is the marine influence will still be there near the coast, which is why the coast is going to remain in the 60s. speaking of the marine influence, tomorrow morning, pretty good push of the marine air, along with some mist and drizzle along the coast tomorrow afternoon around 2:00. the marine layer is trying to pull away, but it just sits there near the coast and then re uh- pushes into our inland areas again. so tomorrow morning, 50s 60s out the door tomorrow afternoon in the south bay. it is going to be nice. 86 in san jose, 91 in gilroy on the peninsula. you're looking at 74
11:22 pm
in san mateo, low 60s. right along the coast where the clouds are hanging tough. 68 in downtown san francisco, 64 in daly city, north bay, numbers 80, in napa, 84. santa rosa, 81, in san rafael heading into the east bay. oakland 73, hayward 76, fremont 79. inland areas closer to average, still a few degrees above but pleasant 91. in fairfield and livermore, 89 in concord and pleasanton. accuweather seven day forecast. enjoy the cooler weather in the fog tomorrow, because temperatures are going to come back up. it will be heating up for a few days with triple digits wednesday through friday. your hottest day is thursday 60s coast side, 90s right around the bay on thursday. but then notice over the weekend we're going to drop down into the low and mid 90s. it will be a lot closer to where we should be. 60s coast
