what happens next. senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is on capitol hill. good morning, rachel. >> george, good morning to you. in just a few hours, democrats in both the house and senate will meet behind closed doors, a pivotal moment for a caucus deeply divided on the president's path forward. overnight, president biden ramping up his outreach efforts to democrats on capitol hill. house democratic leader hakeem jeffries says he's with biden. >> i support president joe biden and the democratic ticket. my position has not changed. >> but many on capitol hill signaling they still have concerns about his campaign. >> you said give it another week. so are you keeping an open mind? >> my thing is to find out what direction the president is going to go, and he's said very clearly what he wants to do and what he will do. >> what do you want to see from him? >> we are seeing he's very active now. that's good. >> this morning, senator patty murray, who served alongside biden in the senate, saying, "we need to see a much more forceful and energetic

candidate on the campaign trail in the very near future in order to convince voters he's up for the job." i tried to get an answer from tom carper of delaware. >> do you think he should step aside? >> i have people waiting for me and i'm in trouble. thank you. >> a simple yes or no, sir. >> thank you. >> carper's office later telling us he's behind biden. others didn't want to talk about the president at all. >> has president biden done enough to stop concerns about his candidacy? >> no comments. >> at least six house democrats have already called on the president to step aside, including congressman adam smith of washington, taking aim at what the president told our george stephanopoulos that he would be okay with losing to donald trump as long as he gave it his all. >> i think that was an incredibly arrogant comment that misses the point. when you run for office, one of the things you have to guard against is thinking it's all about you. >> not a single democratic senator has called on the president to step aside, and i am told all three black democratic senators joined that call between president biden and the congressional black caucus just last night.

i'm told the president told them that he needs them, that he's not going to disappoint them. it's a sign that the president knows he can't lose the critical group that propelled him to the white house four years ago. >> an important group indeed. we will turn now to the remnants of hurricane beryl on the move this morning, still packing heavy rains and strong winds after leaving a trail of destruction in texas. they are cleaning up from the deadly storm which left millions without power. victor oquendo is in houston. good morning, victor. >> good morning, michael. much of houston waking up in the dark, trees like these crashing down on homes and businesses and knocking out power. officials warning it could take days to fully assess all the damage and restore power. crews are racing in from across the country, but with houston under heat advisory today, that help can't come soon enough. overnight, the death toll rising after hurricane beryl swept into texas as a category 1 hurricane. dangerous storm surge inundating parts of the coast. at least six people have died,

including 73-year-old maria laredo, who was killed when a tree came crashing onto her home. and an employee with the houston police department who drowned after driving through floodwaters. >> we are in an emergency. we are in a rescue mode. life safety. >> beryl dumping more than 13 inches of rain in some areas, wind gusts near 97 miles per hour, causing widespread damage to businesses and homes. in the houston area, 47 high-water rescues. firefighters rescued maung phway who we spoke with earlier. >> the water was coming up quickly and it was very hard. thank god, they came pretty fast. >> his pickup truck nearly swallowed. in sargent beach, devastation. boats, campers, roofs peeled from homes. first responders in airboats doing search and rescue. trees crashing into homes across houston, nearly 3 million customers without power at one point. in galveston, the mayor warning it could be two weeks before some people get their power

back. heat index in the coming days will approach 105 degrees. president biden telling houston's mayor his administration will make sure texans have all the resources they need to get through the storm. in louisiana, a woman was also killed by a falling tree as beryl's remnants now move to the northeast. robin? >> victor, thank you so much. we are bringing ginger in now with the track and timing. >> good morning to you. it is swirling over arkansas and will make its way through missouri. flood watches in a bit, but first let's talk tornadoes. tornadoes will still be a threat. 13 confirmed or reported tornadoes on this, but also more than 110 tornado warnings. it was extremely prolific, and i think today, even though you see the video from near shreveport, it is anywhere from arkansas up. louisville is in it, paducah, indianapolis also in the threat. that's where the twist is going to be. tomorrow, binghamton, ithaca, scranton, all make their way into the tornado threat. let's talk flooding, though,

because another 2-4 inches could be possible. we saw more than half a foot around little rock. those watches go up to grand rapids, lansing and detroit, chicago also included because they could get enough rain as this thing wraps around. it's going to move quickly. that ends by thursday. then we have to talk about the heat and the fires. this is the lake fire. more than 21,000 acres burned, they've got it about 8% contained. the evacuations are still in place. it's going to stay super hot in most of california, nevada, arizona. those excessive heat warnings just keep on going. we'll get a little break in the pacific northwest, but we also have heat advisories not just in houston but here in the northeast. >> a lot of triple digits, wow. okay, ginger, thanks. the latest now on a new mishap with a boeing jet. the tire fell off a united flight as it took off from los angeles. the incident now being investigated. transportation correspondent gio benitez has the details. good morning, gio. >> hey, george, good morning. this is now the second time we've seen this in just a few months, but thankfully no one was hurt and now the faa is all over this one.

this morning, a scare in the air caught on camera. flight attendants heard preparing passengers for a hard landing. >> brace, brace, brace! >> a tire falling off this united flight while it was taking off from los angeles international airport en route to denver monday. >> united 1001, just a heads up, the tower called, they think you lost a tire on takeoff. >> the pilot trying to figure out which tire it was. >> can you go ahead and try and call back tower and see if they have any reports of what tire it would be or anything? >> the boeing 757 with 174 passengers on board landing safely in denver as emergency vehicles rushed to get a visual of the aircraft. >> we landed with a thump, but the plane was going straight down the runway. it felt normal. >> the faa now investigating the incident. united airlines telling abc news, "the wheel has been recovered in los angeles, and we are investigating what caused this event." there was a similar incident in

march, when a tire fell off another united boeing plane taking off in san francisco. that tire landing in an airport parking lot, damaging several cars. the airline saying at the time it was a maintenance issue. experts say incidents like these are rare. >> something like this is probably maintenance-related. so that's why the faa is going to want to go back and look at maintenance procedures to make sure that united is doing things the way that they ought to be done. >> meanwhile this morning, there's another very close call to tell you about, and some stunning video. take a look at this. because, if you look very closely at the sky there, you can actually see two delta and american regional jets that appear to come very close together yesterday in syracuse. police dashcam was capturing it all. you can even see an officer looking absolutely stunned there watching it all. the faa of course is now investigating this one, as well, michael. >> all right, gio. thank you. now to alec baldwin on trial. jury selection starts this morning in his involuntary

manslaughter case for fatally shooting cinematographer halyna hutchins on the set of the film "rust." mola lenghi has more. good morning, mola. >> good morning, michael. alec baldwin will be back in court this morning facing that felony involuntary manslaughter charge. but not before some pretty significant developments here in a pretrial hearing on monday. >> defendant alec baldwin's motion -- >> this morning alec baldwin returning to court as jury selection in his criminal trial begins for the fatal shooting on the film set "rust," nearly three years ago. the 66-year-old actor facing an involuntary manslaughter charge, accused of firing a prop gun he says he didn't know contained a live round, killing cinematographer halyna hutchins. >> my understanding, you were in the room when the lady -- >> i was holding the gun, yeah. >> in a pretrial hearing monday, the judge deciding that video evidence showing baldwin handling the firearm can be shown to the jury. >> one more.

>> well videos of him urging crewmembers to hurry up onset cannot. the judge also ruling the state cannot argue that baldwin was negligent in his role as a coproducer on the film, only in his role as an actor. >> excluding information about alec baldwin being a coproducer, it's going to hamper the state a bit, because part of their case in chief was that he was aware of the safety deficiencies, and that he was even more aware of how these actions could have led to this type of an event. >> baldwin has pleaded not guilty, insisting he never pulled the trigger, in an exclusive interview with our george stephanopoulos. >> i would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger at them, never. that was the training i had. you don't point a gun at somebody and pull the trigger. >> but prosecutors allege baldwin disregarded industry rules for handling firearms on movie sets. last march, film armorer hannah gutierrez was convicted

of involuntary manslaughter in hutchins' death and sentenced to 18 months in prison. she is now appealing that conviction. the trial is expected to last ten days and it is still unclear if baldwin will take the stand to testify in his own defense. if convicted, he could be sentenced as 18 months in prison. >> thank you for your reporting. we turn now to the first images of the new arrivals at the san diego zoo. take a look at these cuties in their new home. the panda diplomacy ambassadors, as they've been called, are the first new pandas to arrive in the u.s. in 21 years. they traveled with a caretaker from china who's been working on teaching them english commands to get them ready. they arrived at the end of june and are currently in a one-month quarantine period as they get used to their new environment before greeting the public, and the public is ready to greet them. >> oh, yeah. >> just something about them! they are so cuddly. coming up, the americans still fighting for the title at wimbledon.

declare a mistrial. >> folks, your service is complete. i'm declaring a mistrial. >> now read's defense attorneys filing a motion to dismiss two of the three charges against her, claiming they were contacted by one of those jurors and sources familiar with the jury who said all 12 jurors had agreed unanimously that read was not guilty of second-degree murder, and leaving the scene of an accident with injury or death. but those verdicts were never read in court. read's legal team writing, "juror a was emphatic that count 1 second-degree murder was off the table," adding, "had the court so inquired, it appears clear that not guilty verdicts would have been recorded for count 1 and count 3. ms. read was denied her right to receive those verdicts in her favor." arguing, trying her again on the same counts would constitute double jeopardy. her team saying anything less than the dismissal of those two charges would be a travesty of justice.

the norfolk district attorney's office saying it is examining the motion in anticipation of filing a response, indicating it will press on with the new trial. in the explosive months-long case, prosecutors alleged read intentionally backed her lexus suv into her police officer boyfriend, john o'keefe, in january of 2022, outside a party, and left him for dead in the snow. >> "i hit him, i hit him, i hit him, i hit him." those were the words of the defendant. >> but read has denied any wrongdoing, claiming she's the victim of corrupt police trying to cover up that o'keefe died at that party with his fellow officers. the trial filled with testy exchanges. the judge at one point admonishing read. >> excuse me. this is funny, ms. read? all right, we're done. >> during the trial, read's defense team honed in on unprofessional text messages

that's a lead investigator state trooper, michael proctor, admitted to sending about the case. yesterday he was officially suspended without pay. the massachusetts state police telling abc news their internal investigation is ongoing. read's team and prosecutors are due back in court on july 22nd. much more to come here, michael. >> thank you, erielle. so much going on in this case. let's bring in legal contributor brian buckmire. first time here in the studio. glad we could get you up this early to help us out. defense attorneys, they said a judge should have asked the jury about each charge. how important is that? >> it's very important, but it's not mandatory. what the defense is arguing here is that, in order to see whether or not a mistrial is necessary, there was a need for the judge to explore other alternatives. what that would have meant would be, i get this note, you say you are deadlocked on these charges, and maybe to dig a little deeper. and the defense is saying that could alleviate the issues they are seeing as jurors are

reaching out and saying they got it wrong. >> what happened next, brian? we know the defense says they want to question some members of the jury. can they do that? >> the next step would be the prosecution has the opportunity to respond. even in the defense's motion paper, they are saying it's the prosecution's burden to prove that there was the need for a mistrial. so the prosecution will respond and from there the judge will decide what we do next. one of the alternatives here, they are asking first for a dismissal. probably a very difficult thing to get. second, to question the jurors, either the judge or attorneys to say, what was your thought of each of these accounts? and if it comes out the way they are expecting, there could be a possible dismissal of two of the three counts. >> do think it's hard for them to get the dismissal? >> it is very hard. but this exploration could make it easier. if we do ultimate get that questioning, which is a very high hurdle, the judge can say i read the note, i give you an opportunity, i read this hernandez charge -- rodriguez charge, sorry -- and we got to a deadlock and that's it. that is a major hurdle to overcome. but if they question the jurors and they say yes, we were

welcome. i want to get to the book, but first we'll start with this political situation going on with president biden. he told congressional democrats yesterday the questions about his candidacy have been well-aired, time for them to end. do you agree? does he have your full support? >> he has my full support. i'm a cochair for the biden-harris campaign. i have great confidence in this president. he's got receipts, he's delivered for the american people, and i'm glad he's ready to continue this fight. >> what do you say to your fellow democrats who say he still has to prove his fitness and answer questions? >> i respect the conversation that's happening, and certainly i think what we've seen from the president is an eagerness to get out and about. he's going to be in michigan later this week. he's getting all across the country. i think he's shown he's got the energy and is ready to take this on. >> i know you've called questions about whether you're going to jump into the race a distraction. but is it your position that you are not going to jump in the race even if president biden drops out? >> i don't foresee any change in this race, and the president and vice president have my full

support. >> let's talk about the book. one of the things you write about in the book is that your grandmother taught you to look for the good in any person or situation. for democrats right now, a lot of them are feeling pretty stressed the last several days. where is the good? >> i think that's why i wrote this book. george, the question i get predominantly is, how do i stay optimistic with all this heavy stuff we've had to navigate? knowing once again this will be another heavy political year, i want to make sure people see some of the lessons i've used it to get through these last six years. i do think in times of stress it is more important than ever to listen and ask people what's going on in their lives, see the humanity in one another, and try to find some good out of every situation. i think that is a key to getting through hard times. >> have you found any now? >> there are conversations happening that maybe weren't before. i do always seek to sit down with folks, and in the book i talk a little bit about sitting

down with farmers in midland, michigan, a pretty conservative part of my state, just to check in. i found we were experiencing a lot of the same things, and i think that's really powerful. the power of listening is important. >> you also talked about what you learned dealing with bullies. talk about that. >> over the course of my life, like just about everyone i know, i've had to deal with folks who've taken aim at me, whether it is schoolyard insults, to people commenting on my dress during my first state of the state in michigan. to a former president who singled me out and encouraged people to hurt me and my family. at the end of the day, i am an ordinary person in an extraordinary role, serving during an extraordinary time, staying focused, finding the good in any situation, and running to the fire. some of the lessons that have sustained me. >> what did you learn from dealing with donald trump, and what lessons can democrats take in the next several months from that? >> for a bully, you take the weapon and make it your shield. you laugh at a joke or you own "that woman from michigan," the moniker the former president

gave me. we saw a community grow and women showing up at my events. we took someone else's weapon and made it our shield. a call to action, something women can unify around. >> you say this book isn't really a memoir, more of a handbook. what do you mean by that? >> it's a short book, you can pick it up, you don't have to read every chapter in succession. it really is something that happened in my life, or a lesson that i learned, and how i used it over some of the challenges of the last six years. whether it was the insane flooding we had that wiped out bridges, we had to evacuate 10,000 people in the middle the night, in the middle of the pandemic, to the pandemic itself, to the kidnapping and murder plot that the public became aware of a couple years ago. these are extraordinary circumstances, but certainly everyone has tough stuff they have got to navigate, and that is my hope, that you get a laugh or a lesson or a little inspiration. >> your state is a must-win for democrats. whered o things stand right now? >> i think michigan is always going to be a state you can't

take your eye off of. people in michigan are good, hardworking people. we expect our leaders to be as good if not better, and work just as hard if not harder. it's always going to be a close race. as i've told people, don't clutch your pearls when you see a poll where we're down two points, don't celebrate when we are up two points. roll up the sleeves and do the work. i think that's why we've been so successful and we will continue to drive the work we do going into november. >> what's the most important thing you want people to learn about you from this book? >> that i'm a normal human being. i have shortcomings, i have had weird experiences, i have had some really wonderful victories, and if there is a lesson that someone can take from this to help them get through a hard time, or a laugh to lighten the heaviness of this moment, that's what it's all about. >> thanks for coming in today. spokesman, john kirby. thanks as always for joining us. let's talk about those questions surrounding president biden's appearance here at the nato summit. are you concerned they are going to overshadow the business of the summit? >> no, not at all, george. and there's an awful lot of business to be done at this summit. you mentioned ukraine, they'll also talk about defense industrial capabilities and improving that. they're going to talk about how the alliance itself can improve its own deterrence and defense capabilities. there's an awful lot on the agenda. the president is very excited about this summit, hosting it in washington, starting tonight in the same auditorium where the nato treaty was first signed by harry truman. there's a lot of work to get done. >> as you know, there's been reports recently of concerns among nato officials who have encountered the president in the last several months. how will he reassure them? >> i think just the fact that this summit is happening here in washington, these leaders are coming, says a lot about how much they value american leadership on the world stage and how much they respect and are grateful for the return of that leadership that president biden has ushered in in the last three and half years.

they constantly talk to him everywhere he goes about how important what he's been doing is, not just to the alliance, but to our partnerships around the world, and how critical it is particularly in supporting ukraine. without the united states and our leadership, without the leadership he has shown, it's hard to imagine that ukraine would have been able to hold off russia for as long as they have. >> and what can you tell us about the big announcements coming on ukraine? >> i think you are going to see some announcements with respect to air defense in particular. i don't want to get ahead of it, george, but right now clearly -- and you can look at the attack over the weekend where 46 people have been killed in ukraine -- that russia continues to bombard their cities with missiles and drones. they need air defense capabilities. you will see the allies step up to that need. you will see the allies step up to what we call bilateral security agreements for longer-term defense needs for ukraine, for whenever and however this war ends. and you're also going to see a very strong reaffirmation from the alliance about the fact that nato is going to be in ukraine's

future. they will become a nato ally at some point, and laying out a little bit more specifically what the path to that membership is going to look like. >> finally, i want to ask about the situation in the middle east. it seems like one step forward, two steps back on a possible cease-fire. where do things stand right now? >> there's a team in cairo, including the cia director, bill burns, as well as the senior director for the middle east here at the nsc, brett mcgurk. they are negotiating with our partners and trying to get this over the finish line. i don't know that i would describe it as one step forward and two steps back. i mean, we are close here. we think that these gaps are narrow and bridgeable, and that's what we are going to try to get done. >> john kirby, thanks for your time. michael? >> thank you, george. we turn now to the trail of destruction in texas with the remnants of hurricane beryl on the move this morning. let's go back to victor oquendo in houston. good morning again, victor. >> good morning, michael. there are downed trees all over houston that have knocked out

for the latest. good morning to you, kayna. >> yeah, robin, good morning. firefighters are very concerned about significant fire spread today, because red flag warnings are going into effect in this area today. let me introduce you to goliath. this is a sky crane helicopter capable of carrying well over 2,000 gallons of water. what you see here is the snorkel. it's hard to believe how big it is. this is how they fill up that tank. it can fill the tank up in 45 seconds, and that is crucial turnaround time, especially a fire like the lake fire burning in such rugged and hard-to-reach terrain. this fire has scored more than 21,000 acres, but it's also 1 os state right now. if you look at the lake tahoe area, 13 hikers had to be rescued because they got caught up in that royal fire. ultimately there is widespread concern across the western united states right now.

this morning we are looking at what to do after you reach your goal taking medication for weight loss. becky worley has those details for us. good morning, becky. >> robin, good morning. now that medications used for weight loss like wegovy and zepbound have been on the market for a while, patients are faced with figuring out what to do when they hit their weight goal. >> i am still on mounjaro for maintenance. >> callie from new jersey started taking mounjaro in july of 2022. when she hit her goal of losing 90 pounds, her focus shifted to maintenance. >> i never want to stop taking these medications. my goal in terms of maintenance is to be on the lowest effective dose possible. i don't ever want to be on a dose that is too high. >> one clinical trial found that patients going off weight loss medications have an average weight gain rebound of about two-thirds of the total weight loss. so many doctors say coming up with a maintenance plan, staying on some amount of medication, may be best for most, but can look different for everyone.

>> people are really dialing down these dosages. are they kind of winging it out there? >> some people may be winging it. we recommend that people lose 15% of their body weight or more as a target, and then reduce the dose, take it less frequently. that minimizes the side effects and makes it as cost-effective as possible. >> but doctors say patients should keep a close eye on how their body reacts to dosage changes. >> if they regain a significant amount, maybe 5% of their weight, then i would absolutely restart the medication the way they were taking it before. >> besides reducing the dosage amount or spreading the time between shots, doctors say lifestyle changes are key. >> we have shifted from counting calories to focusing our patients on getting in a high-quality diet. healthy foods like vegetables, and healthy proteins. >> but data shows that even

those who continue a healthy lifestyle may be metabolically prone to weight gain. >> they want to lose weight, but something is stopping them from complying with the diet, or even if they comply, their weight doesn't go down. we know this from years of research. so it is unrealistic to expect that a behavioral program of any type is going to help someone to maintain in the long run. >> for callie, she hopes to maintain her current weight and let go of the worries she will gain it back. >> i even had a section of clothes in my closet that was for when i messed up and when i got heavy again, or got unhealthy again. and so, for the future, is to get rid of that section of my closet and never have to worry about becoming that unhealthy version of myself again, with this weight that is lifted off of my shoulders. >> this point is so key. doctors say it's not just calories in, calories out, after you go off these medications. the body wants to return to its

>> just one of the lessons that 25-year-old veronica siaba learned from dancing dreams, a nonprofit organization offering dance classes for children with disabilities. >> circle up, around. >> at just four years old, veronica, who was born with cerebral palsy, became the program's first dancer, and the inspiration behind the entire organization. >> are you ready to dance? >> yes! >> okay. >> the idea was born in 2006 when veronica showed up to an appointment with her physical therapist, joanne ferrara, dressed in a tutu and tiara. >> and i said, you're like a ballerina! and she looked at me with these big eyes and said, i wish i could be a ballerina but nobody wants me. it just ripped my heart out. without even thinking, i walked out in the waiting room and said to her mom, i'm starting a dance program. >> and jump, and plie. >> and she did just that, launching the program a week

later. >> i just went by the seat of my pants. i just went out and bought a ballet barre. >> at that point, i knew i was different than "normal" kids, so i wasn't really expecting to have, like, an actual barre in the room, and that just solidified, like, okay, this is a real, legitimate dance class. >> march, and clap. >> and it is this excitement for inclusion that has kept their program running for over 20 years, teaching over 800 dancers the importance of dreaming both inside and outside of the dance studio. >> when i first came to dancing dreams, i was really going through a hard time with myself, and when i came to the program it really opened my eyes. i saw so many people are so many different types of disabilities, and it really inspired me to continue to push myself in life and to accept myself for who i was.

through this program i have gained so much independence and i have met so many incredible people. >> including over 120 volunteers who work tirelessly all year long preparing these kids for their annual >> this year we had over 850 people. i asked one little girl, who did you invite? and she said to me, everyone i ever knew. we had a special moment when one of our little dancers, who was charlie chaplin, decided right before the show that he was going to do his charlie chaplin dance without the walker he uses to walk. >> and as these kids shine under the bright lights, they learn invaluable lessons to take with them as they enter the world stage. >> the best part about being in these shows is that i can be comfortable being on stage and really expressing myself. >> i think the biggest misconception that people have about disabilities is that we can't do anything, that there's limits, or we have no talent.

if you give people a chance, how you give everybody else a chance, we can be capable of anything you can be capable of. >> disability is not considered a part of diversity in a lot of ways, and dancing dreams shows the incredible power of what it is to feel a part of something. >> we love dancing dreams! >> these kids are showing that there are no limits. what an incredible program, started by joanne. and veronica graduated from college in 2022 and she is now back interning at dancing dreams, putting her degree to good use, helping joanne expand the program. >> what a terrific program. >> it is. just hearing what they were saying about how you don't think about that, you don't think about it when you're talking about diversity. and it's beautiful. beautiful. >> it is absolutely beautiful, and great by every one of them. so proud of them. let's go to you, ginger. >> i love that, she's going to keep passing it forward. let's talk about beryl because
