guidance about quarantining and masking, it can be tough to really figure out the right approach. >> abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley went to the bay area's health experts for advice on the new covid protocols. >> i just got off the phone with somebody who said she has covid right now and is recovering. >> it's likely, you know, a coworker or family member or friend who is sick this summer and you wonder, do they have covid? >> summer is just the time where people travel a lot. they're going out more. they're seeing more people going on vacation. so more time to potentially be exposed to covid 19, particularly as we're seeing just increases in cases. >> so where to start if you have cold or flu, like symptoms? first of all, throw out any expired test kits. you can't trust the result with a new kit. if you test positive, you are positive. >> if you've got a negative home test, but you've got signs and symptoms of covid, you've got to assume that that could be falsely negative and repeat it the next day and the next day and the next day.
5:02 pm
>> if you're positive for covid, do do you stay home until you're feeling better or your fever is resolved for at least 24 hours? >> there are no clearly defined rules anymore. but doctors do have suggestions. >> you don't have to isolate for five days anymore. but going out into the world doesn't mean you're going out. and, you know, sort of being normal. you're wearing a mask in risky areas. you know, i think wearing a mask for five days is reasonable. >> even wearing a mask among loved ones at home. as for those serious about dodging covid this summer, you're going to a wedding. >> you know, in those trips where you're surrounded by a lot of noses and mouths, it really would make sense to protect yourself, particularly if somebody's on the plane next to you is coughing and is symptomatic. carry that mask around. put it on when you feel vulnerable in the east bay. >> i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. >> downtown san francisco is getting a boost in tourism. and

with that, an increase in business. this week, semicon west labeled as north america's premier microelectronics exhibition and conference, is now underway at moscone center. more than 10,000 people will be attending the three day event. it's expected to generate nearly $17 million in economic impact. >> a report out tonight says a san francisco neighborhood could soon see 200 new homes, thanks to a controversial new law aimed at fast tracking housing all across the state, according to our partners at the sf standard, a letter of intent is now on file with the city to build a 23 story apartment building at 1965 market street at devos avenue. the report says the development will likely be the first to take advantage of a brand new state law allowing cities to bypass discretionary hearings and waive environmental reviews. san francisco will be the first city subject to the new rules, because it failed to meet its housing goals. no word yet on when the project could actually

be completed. >> firefighters are mopping up following a grass fire this afternoon in san jose. this one started just before 12:30 p.m. near santa teresa county park and charred. you can see it here. about 25 acres. before firefighters got this thing under control, people were evacuated from the park and a part of santa teresa boulevard was briefly shut down. there are no reports of any injuries or major damage there. >> meanwhile, firefighters west of lake tahoe are dealing with brutally hot weather as they hike to the royal fire. that fire didn't grow much overnight, though. better mapping puts it at about 200 acres. it's burning near soda springs and the sugar bowl ski area. firefighters say there's still no containment on this because the steep terrain is making it hard to reach the fire line. they're literally hiking in. they do have the fire boxed in by retardant with aircraft still helping out today. >> luckily for firefighters out there, there is a brief window of relief from the heat out there. live. look at the conditions. looking good as we

look down the embarcadero across the bay. the slightly cooler temperatures. they're not going to last too long though for the details, we check in now with abc seven meteorologist sandhya patel. it felt nice out there today, sandhya. >> it sure did. julian and you know what? people have been enjoying this break from the heat as we take a look at the temperatures change, you will notice it's eight degrees cooler in concord down five in santa rosa and san jose. these temperatures in the comfort zone 80s inland, 60s along the coastline. unfortunately, as julian just mentioned, it is not going to last. so we have excessive heat warnings going up for inland areas, heat advisories for much of the areas shaded in orange other than san francisco and the coast. it's all starting 11 a.m. tomorrow, running until 8 p.m. friday. there will be an increased risk of heat illnesses as we track another round of hot weather with triple digits inland. this heat wave will bring 104 to antioch, 103. in livermore and fairfield, you will notice it's going to warm up even in places
5:06 pm
like san jose, 9382 in oakland, you are looking at 98. in santa rosa, 74 degrees in san francisco of course, with this kind of heat comes a heat risk. i'll be back with a full look at that forecast, including a spare. the air coming up. dan. >> okay, sandhya, thanks a lot. we'll touch base again in a few minutes. we're learning more tonight about a really scary situation in the north bay. police in fairfield say they arrested a man accused of kidnaping and trying to rape two children. it happened last month as a 12 year old boy and a girl were walking to school together along a bike path between meadowlark drive and east tabor drive. police say a 30 year old man approached them on the trail. the kids fought him off and made it to school. investigators arrested the suspect last week on suspicion of kidnap to commit rape, attempted sexual assault of a child and more charges as well. >> we have some new developments tonight and a bomb threat that we first reported last week in san jose. it happened inside of the business near ritter park drive and fox lane. police did
5:07 pm
find a bomb there and today they say they have made an arrest. abc seven news reporter lena howland has the latest. >> reporter that was the sound of a bomb squad safely disabling a suspected explosive last wednesday, the santa clara county district attorney's office says it was found behind a mental health resource center called community solutions in san jose. >> but police only learned of this device after getting a bizarre call. >> the suspect had called police to report that he had planted an ied at a business. when officers arrived at the location, they located a suspicious device as a bomb squad and swat team responded to the call, a nearby elementary school, surrounding homes and businesses were evacuated. >> no one was hurt. it's still unclear if the device was legitimate. >> we know that the device was rendered safe. there are multiple components that make up an ied. those materials are still being tested in the lab. >> only a few hours later on
5:08 pm
that same day, police found the suspect sitting in a car near the intersection of aborn road and ruby avenue. this is where he was safely taken into custody. the 56 year old suspect, who we've chosen not to name until his arraignment, has an extensive criminal history. court records show he's been in a mental health diversion program since 2021. in connection to a different felony. police confirm his home in san jose was searched as far as, like any additional devices, none were located. >> but anything that seems suspicious was taken to the lab just for future testing. >> we asked about the suspect's. have any connections to the nonprofit community solutions, and why he would report his own crime. >> those are questions that we're we want to know as well. so it's still part of the criminal investigation at this point. >> community solutions did not respond to our request for comment. the suspect is facing multiple charges, including possession of a destructive device. he was scheduled to be in court on tuesday, but the

da's office says he's refusing to leave his jail cell. his hearing has been rescheduled for thursday in san jose. lena howland abc seven news. >> three juveniles are under arrest for a series of robberies and assaults in oakland. police say the first robbery happened on saturday about 12:30 p.m. near fruitvale avenue and macarthur boulevard. the victim was robbed after withdrawing money from an atm. the second happened roughly two hours later on 24th street. a vendor was robbed and then shot after confronting one of the suspects yesterday on 24th street, and a victim was pushed to the ground and then robbed. the last incident happened 30 minutes later on international boulevard, where police say the victim was pistol whipped and robbed. investigators are loing into whether this trio may be involved in other crimes as well. >> we are now learning more details of a us attorney issued subpoena in oakland following last month's fbi raid at several locations across the city, including mayor tsingtao's home. well, now we have a better idea
5:10 pm
of the documents they're looking for. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn is following the story for us. >> we're getting a look at a federal grand jury subpoena addressed to oakland city attorney barbara parker. the oakland side posted the subpoena on their website. the u.s. attorney wants the city to hand over various documents. >> that's serious. and, you know, i mean, that's the first time that i've been involved politically here that i've heard of a federal investigation. >> you see, law associate professor jonathan abell says this is the first look at what federal authorities may be after. and that a federal grand jury will be handling this high profile case. a federal grand jury will determine if there is enough evidence to file charges or indictments. >> this is a road map to the things that they're interested in. >> according to the chronicle, last week, in connection with a federal grand jury subpoena, the oakland city attorney reportedly told some city staff to preserve all documents related to mayor sheng tao's partner, andre jones, as well as california
5:11 pm
waste solutions and the duong family. >> they don't want someone putting them into a shredding machine today. >> among the documents the subpoena demands communications related to andre jones. all calendar entries or records of the existence of planned or scheduled meetings with tao or jones from june 22nd to the present. >> we don't really know how all the pieces fit together, but you can see that types of things that are interested in the subpoena also requests documents and communications related to the former oakland army base and efforts to fight homelessness that were considered by oakland city council last year. so i think what what they're trying to find out is who was involved and who was asking for what. >> we reached out to mayor tao's legal counsel, attorney jeff tsai. he did not want to comment on the matter today. this afternoon, a spokesperson for california waste solutions and the dow jones issued this statement saying, quote, the company is currently working closely with federal investigators to support and expedite their investigation, which is unrelated to cw s operations.
5:12 pm
>> but it's disturbing. it's really for me, it's, you know, we're losing a lot of confidence. and from the public here in of oakland, city leaders say they're just taking this complicated investigation one step at a time. >> in oakland. suzanne vaughn, abc seven news. >> we've been following this every step of the way. so if you need some help tracking the events of this case, we have a timeline for you. it's on our website, abc seven news.com and inside the abc seven bay area app. >> coming up, it's official. he's now a dallas maverick. and today we heard finally from klay thompson for the first time since he left the warriors. abc seven news sports director larry beil will be here with that as abc seven news at

5:15 pm
abc seven sports director, larry beil, is here with more on what clay had to say. this is an adjustment here to see this happen. it's not only an adjustment for clay, it's an adjustment for all of us. >> that's what i mean. >> it's hard to see holding up that jersey. >> i know, i know, it's uh- i mean, it's a really strange sight. klay thompson you know he's got the new mavs jersey. he's got a different number now. klay appeared with the mavericks two other offseason acquisitions holding up his new number 31. now the number 11 that he wore with the warriors belongs to kyrie irving. he's not getting that. so klay chose 31. in honor of another legendary shooter, reggie miller, who was his childhood inspiration. thompson spoke about his decision to leave golden state and his excitement about playing with the mavs. >> i just saw myself fitting in really well with this team and the personnel and they looked like they had fun playing with each other and they play for each other, and that was very attractive for me and that's really all i needed to see. and there was mutual interest there,
5:16 pm
and that's why i'm here sometimes, you know, break ups are necessary to do what's right. and i'm not the first athlete in the nba to go through this. >> klay left the warriors after 13 historic seasons, winning four championships, signing a three year, $50 million contract with the mavericks. i think it's going to be a perfect fit alongside luka doncic and kyrie irving. the interesting part of this is that his father, who was a laker great and now a lakers broadcaster, wanted him to go to the lakers. and klay said, i don't want it because it's going to be the same thing as the warriors with all the scrutiny and, you know, the microscope is always on lebron and anthony davis. he's like, i want to go to dallas. it's going to be a totally different situation. yeah >> so interesting interesting choice. not going to be able to take his boat to work in dallas. >> it's going to be tough. it's going to be a lot tougher. good luck with that. yeah. they have to sell that. >> all right. thanks a lot. appreciate it. well coming up a new way to cross the oakland estuary

people, including many santa clara valley water district employees. they've spoken out at board meetings this afternoon about the dangers of working around encampments. workers say they've been threatened, some with machetes, while trying to do flood protection work around waterways. >> we've seen security advisories about people throwing rocks, hypodermic needles stuck near locks and aggressive individuals and dogs. we're seeing more frequent advisory about weapons. >> the ordinance does not criminalize homelessness, but it does authorize law enforcement to clear encampments. if people choose not to leave voluntarily. >> south bay officials are asking the federal government to write them a big check to start building the long awaited bart extension through downtown san jose, santa clara valley transportation officials say they still need $6 billion to
5:20 pm
extend bart from berryessa to santa clara, but that's only half of the actual total. south bay residents already approved three ballot initiatives to raise the other half of that $12 billion cost. >> imagine a seamless transit system connecting our entire bay area. for years, we've dreamed of this. now we're on the cusp of making it a reality. >> vta has already started prep work on the santa clara station, but needs the federal funding before the starting the underground portion through downtown san jose. >> well, finally, a cool day across the bay for a bit. >> we should enjoy this because things are about to change dramatically. meteorologist sandyha patel is here. sandy. >> yeah, dan and julian. it was nice while it lasted, right? we had upper 80s inland as opposed to the triple digits that we were dealing with not too long ago. well, another heat wave is headed our way. so let's talk about our calendar. counting the days inland heat wave. the first one was seven days. from the
5:21 pm
second through the eighth of this month. this one here is the silver lining. it's going to last three days, and i don't expect it to be quite as intense for quite so long. but there is going to be the danger of heat risk for those who are sensitive. so tomorrow inland areas are going to be in the moderate to major heat risk. definitely stay hydrated and keep cool. we do have a spare the air alert for tomorrow as our air quality will begin to decline inland. east bay santa clara valley will go to poor moderate elsewhere. and then thursday right now is looking moderate. so why are we expecting a spare the air day? not so much because of the smoke at this point, but high pressure is going to rebuild. it's going to put a lid on the atmosphere. so the nice breeze that we're experiencing now is going to weaken. and that means some of that ozone will be gathering down near the surface. so keep that in mind as we look at live doppler seven. the fog never quite cleared the coast, and we even have patches near the bay right now. combine that with the onshore breezes. gusts to 33 in

oakland, 25 at sfo. today's highs so far only in the 60s to 80s and still pretty foggy on the golden gate bridge, as you can see. 64 in the city, 69 in oakland. you're in the 70s from hayward to san jose, redwood city, as we look at a live picture from our emeryville camera, you can see the patches of low clouds over 80 here. 75 in santa rosa, 74 in napa. you're in the 80s, kind of in the comfort zone. concord, livermore, mid 80s, and a live view from san jose where it is sunny the next three days. we're expecting the triple digit heat to return coastal areas will remain mild with a mix of sun and fog, and then your weekend weather will be breezy and cooler in comparison to what we're going to deal with over the next couple of days. so we go hour by hour. the fog along the coast 6:00 620 tonight, 80s inland. you will notice that the temperatures will drop pretty quickly as we head towards the latter part of the evening and into the morning. the fog will branch back out again. we are looking at 50s and 60s to start the morning, and then by
5:23 pm
noontime, rising up into the 80s and 90s, away from the coast, eventually the triple digits. but the good news is still enough of an onshore breeze and the marine influence keeping your temperatures at the beaches in the 60s. so there's always a place to go around this time. typically temperatures 50s and 60s in the morning. tomorrow afternoon, heating up again away from the coast, 101 in the south bay and morgan hill, 93 san jose on the peninsula, 86, in palo alto, 67, in pacifica, downtown san francisco 74 degrees 69, in daly city. you're still going to have a little bit of fog lingering in the north bay. 93 in san rafael, vallejo, 98 in santa rosa. plenty of triple digits from ukiah to cloverdale to lakeport in the east bay. 82 oakland 90 in castro valley, head inland and it will definitely be hot tomorrow. 103 in livermore and fairfield, 102 in concord, getting you up to about 104 in antioch. your accuweather seven day forecast. dangerous heat on thursday gets up to 108 for the hot spots. mid

60s, coast, 90s around the bay. our last day of triple digits will be friday and then over the weekend. this will seem a lot better when you're in the 90s inland, as opposed to the triple digits 60s coast side or marine influence will return as well, and julian and dan will also have to watch for the potential for some sierra thunderstorms over the weekend. >> you know, it's tough when 96 seems cool, right? exactly. >> especially when we've been through these extreme heat. yeah. >> thanks, andrea. >> appreciate it. a fun new way for people to get across the oakland estuary is launching soon. check it out. a water shuttle called woodstock will be offering service next week. on july 17th, it will run between alameda landing and oakland's jack london square as a part of a two year pilot. we're told the ride should take just under ten minutes. you're not going too far. it's free for everyone. you can even bring your bike. service will be available five days a week, wednesdays through sundays. >> looks kind of like a floating school bus. all right, still ahead, getting ready to say
