>> happy wednesday i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with the extreme heat gripping so much of the nation. >> yes, it is summer, but parts of the country have never seen heat like this before. >> abc's lana moise reports on the toll it's taking. >> this morning, oppressive heat is spreading to more of the nation, breaking records and turning deadly. at least six heat related deaths are now reported in oregon, where temperatures topped 100 for four straight days. >> we're hyper focusing our efforts on our seniors in our community, our neighbors and friends and family members who have no apartment, no ac in their apartment. >> farther south, three hikers have died in the grand canyon in recent days, and a biker died in death valley, where it hit 128 degrees. it's worse than an oven. >> i don't know, that's like an oven. it's like walking in the oven a hot hairdryer. you open the oven after 350, more than 150 million americans are on alert for extreme heat today from california to montana, fresno is bracing for its seventh consecutive day of temperatures, hitting 105 or

higher. >> but it's not just the west. philadelphia and d.c. could experience feel-like temperatures of 110 today. >> having a number gets people focused on wow, this invisible silent thing is really costing us money. >> and now a dollar amount on the cost of these sweltering temperatures, extreme heat events are blamed for $7.7 billion in losses over the last decade, according to a new report from the california department of insurance. and that's just one state. the report found millions in infrastructure costs due to heat. just this week, we saw bridget new york get stuck in the open position because heat expanded the steel and heat buckled. this state highway in washington state. the report also found power outages in the heat could cost up to $230 million in california alone, and the impact on worker productivity up to $210 million in losses per heat event. >> heat affects the human body are health. it slows us down

misfired. meanwhile, a veteran armorer says he turned down a job on the movie. he describes an unrealistic schedule and low staffing kids who are constantly on their phones will not like this. >> another state is making a move to keep cell phones out of the classroom during next school year. this morning, virginia is set to become the latest state to restrict cell phone use in public schools. the governor issuing an executive order to establish guidance for local school systems to adopt by january, saying the measure is essential to promote a healthier and more focused educational environment. the order is not an outright ban, instead calling for age appropriate guidance that would eliminate or severely restrict phone use during instructional time. >> social media, you know it can wait. honestly it's not that important to be doing. it's much more important what's going on in the classroom. >> last year, florida became the first state to crack down on phones in schools. indiana and ohio passed their own laws this

year at the heart of the issue, the distraction and mental health issues linked to social media. >> we know that we've already lost too many kids or kids that are spiraling for a long time now. >> new york's governor recently signed a bill restricting social media use by minors after the u.s. surgeon general called for social media platforms to display health warnings similar to tobacco products. research shows kids who spend an average of three hours or more on social media per day double their risk of anxiety and depression. today, on average, they spend nearly five hours per day. and now back to virginia. the education department will now come up with guidelines on restricting phones. the governor's order cites ideas like pouches or even lockers where the students can store their phones during the school day so they're not on them. >> time now for your wednesday weather. >> good morning. we're still dealing with the impacts of beryl as the storm passes to the

describes this close call in the sky over syracuse. video appears to show regional jets from delta and american airlines crossing paths shortly after one took off as the other was landing the faa is now investigating. >> these airplanes were way too close together. they should have never gotten that close togethe. both aircraft lost that visual separation and they didn't know where the other airplane was. that's what made this more dangerous. >> flight tracking sites show the planes were fewer than 800ft apart vertically. >> we turn now to a new twist in the search for an american missing in the caribbean. this morning, police in the bahamas have suspended a high ranking officer investigating the disappearance of a chicago woman. the department only saying the suspension is because of a concerning voice note circulating on social media. another officer will take over the investigation into taylor casey, who was last seen in the bahamas for a yoga retreat on june 19th. casey's mother believes her daughter is a victim of discrimination. >> i feel like my child had two
