kind of dancing? >> fresh off retirement, elton john coming to the bay area to play another gig to benefit a good cause. >> good morning. it is wednesday, june 10th. >> start the check of our forecast with lisa. >> okay, well it's back. not as extensive. we'll see. this heat lasted three days, beginning today at 11:00. our excessive heat warning for our inland valleys. so particularly the east bay, the santa clara valley and a spare, the air alert, low clouds and fog with us quite expansive this morning. and once again, the same areas, not the bay shore or the city of san francisco, but the rest of us will definitely be feeling the heat this afternoon in the east bay. and then later on today, everyone will notice how quickly it has warmed up. there's a look at the low clouds, 67 in san jose. one of the warmer spots. it's cloudy here at 56 downtown gray across the bay, 60 in oakland. and a beautiful view from sutro. 556 the official sunrise and setting at eight

3360 in concord. the skies are clear. the sea breeze with us today over 20 miles an hour. so pleasant in the 70s in san francisco. but we'll warm quickly over in oakland, low to mid 80s in spots. and then by noontime mid 90s inland, over 102 could see about 103 antioch. and looking at the bay shore quite warm again, but cool with some clouds at the coast. amanda. >> hi lisa, plenty of commute time left, but it isn't too bad. here's a live look at the san mateo bridge, the toll plaza into foster city that commute will take you about 12 minutes. you can see things are certainly starting to fill in. then we want to leave you with some drive times. 22 minutes from highway four to the maze, 35 minutes from antioch to hayward, and then from 85 to sjc. that drive will take you eight minutes. a clear commute across san jose to in or out, north or south. getting into san jose. >> back to you, amanda. thank you. part of our work in building a better bay area is improving the region's public transit. and as we reported in

the past, bart is facing a fiscal crisis. the agency needs money, or the entire system's future could be in doubt, a new report shows. bart just isn't making money like it was before the pandemic started. abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live from daly city. so, gloria, what are some of the factors contributing to that lower ridership? >> well, reggie, of course, remote work is one of those factors. we know that bart is facing a multimillion dollar deficit starting in 2026, and the report makes the case for needing financial assistance. it also touts the benefits of bart, even for those people who don't use bart. the 62 page report shows that bart ridership is closely linked to regional office occupancy rates. both have recovered 43% of pre-pandemic levels. bart riders have come back, but many are not commuting to work the way they had been, instead taking bart only on certain days or for big events like parades and sporting events. the bay area council was instrumental in bart's creation years ago, council president and

ceo jim wunderman says safety is also a big concern as it was in a survey that they gave to 1200 bay area voters last year. >> we found there was a, you know, there's a fairly large number of people, tens of thousands of people in the bay area who are wary of using bart, who used to use it or, and would otherwise use it if they felt more comfortable. >> and the report also found that bart only received 41% financial assistance pre-pandemic from regional, state and federal governments. that is low compared to other agencies across the country, but it will likely need 70% assistance moving forward. and the report touts the benefits of bart, such as providing jobs, its affordability also lessening traffic congestion. live in daly city, gloria rodriguez, abc seven news thank you, gloria. >> south bay officials continue to push mission for federal money to start the long, the

long. excuse me. to start building the long awaited bart extension through downtown san jose. santa clara valley transportation officials say they still need $6 billion to extend barred from berryessa to santa clara. but that's only half of the actual total south bay residents have already approved three ballot initiatives to raise. the other half of that $12 billion cost. >> imagine a seamless transit system connecting our entire bay area. for years we've dreamed of this. now we're on the cusp of making it a reality. >> vta has already started prep work on the santa clara station, but it needs the federal funding before starting the underground portion through downtown san jose. >> happening today, governor newsom will update us on the response to the wildfires burning across the state. he's scheduled to start at 10 a.m. you can watch live on our abc7 bay area apps. firefighters are battling at least 19 wildfires right now across california, the biggest, the lake fire in santa barbara county. it's almost

27,000 acres. it's only 16% contained. if you want to keep an eye on any of the fires burning in the state and the impact on air quality, where you live, you can head to our website. our interactive tool is right on the front page abc seven news.com. >> also happening today, a man accused of planting a bomb in san jose, then calling police on himself, is now set to make his first court appearance. if he shows up the 56 year old was originally supposed to be arraigned last friday, then monday, then yesterday, but he's been refusing to go to court. last wednesday, the san jose police bomb squad safely detonated a device found behind a mental health resource center. the discovery triggered a widespread evacuation in that area around ritter park drive and fox lane. police say it will take more time to determine if the device posed a real danger. >> there are multiple components that make up an ied. those materials are still being tested in the lab. >> police say this motive is still being investigated, but

they say the suspect has an extensive criminal history, and court records show he's been in a mental health diversion program since 2021. >> happening today, san francisco's police commission will consider some major policy changes, including when officers can initiate chases. it's a story we've been following for a while. the commission is considering seven different policy changes after voters passed prop e earlier this year. high speed pursuits used to be limited to suspects in a violent felony case, but now it could be any felony or a violent misdemeanor, including retail theft or car theft. >> today, president biden will be meeting with union leaders as he faces pressure within his own party to step aside from his reelection campaign. he's relying on labor unions to help make the case that his record in office matters more than his age. the 81 year old president will be meeting with the executive council of america's largest federation of trade unions, a white house official tells the associated press that

the president plans to thank union leaders for their support and talk about his plans for the future. >> president biden has repeatedly given a forceful yes when asked if he's fit to serve another four years. the democratic party remains divided on that issue. amanda, there is something they appear to agree on now, reggie, democrats appear to agree that there is too much at stake in november, all of them saying they want to beat donald trump. >> the question is, who has the best chance? more congressional democrats are doubling down on president biden's determination to continue on the campaign trail. senate majority leader chuck schumer is among those backing the president. however, several senate democrats are now expressing concerns, and a seventh house democrat wants him to drop out. house democrats gathered yesterday to discuss president biden's candidacy. people describe the meeting as rough and sobering. are you all on the same page? >> no. what do you mean you're not on the same page? >> don't even in the same book, president biden is trying to

rally momentum while also taking the world stage. >> at the nato summit in washington, he announced a new historic aid package for ukrain, the united states, germany, the netherlands, romania and italy will provide ukraine with the equipment for five additional strategic air defense systems. ukrainian president zelensky is also in washington. he's urging world leaders to continue support against russia's invasion, saying he doesn't know what to expect. should donald trump win in november. the white house says president biden will meet with zelensky tomorrow and will hold a news conference. it will be his first in eight months. back to you at the desk, kumasi. >> thank you. amanda. bay area democrats are reacting after calls with president biden. south bay congressman ro khanna says he was on the call with the democratic caucus. he says the most important thing for the party to do now is to help biden's campaign. >> it's his decision whether to run. he has the delegates. he's

decided he's going to run uh. and at this point, anything speculative is academic. >> the president also hosted a phone call with democratic mayors of major cities, including san francisco mayor london breed. after that call, breed's office sent abc seven news a statement that read in part, the president and his administration continued to play a critical role through investments across a number of issues important to san francisco, including a landmark infrastructure package, and have strengthened a concerted effort to disrupt the production of fentanyl and trafficking, production and trafficking of fentanyl. >> we have a 10 to 15 degree jump today in the east bay, and the south bay. we were 87 in livermore today. well, yesterday, well over 100 today. so our heat wave begins again as we had a nice break out there. you can see the low clouds and fog all along the coast. before the fourth, we started sweating it out seven days straight, then

had a nice break. a bit on monday, more so yesterday and then back into it for the next three days with our excessive heat warning. so air quality good right now. spare the air alert later on today our inland east bay, the south bay, santa clara valley particularly hazy at times. so we'll call it poor air quality there today. and then moderate for the rest of us through tomorrow. tomorrow we are expecting the peak of the heat. so there's a look at the low cloud deck, the temperatures ranging from the 50s to low 60s in hayward, upper 60s in san jose. we do have a pretty dense marine layer at the coast, and it has expanded to the east. we've got 50s in the north bay. clouds around tomorrow. we could be as hot as 107 108 inland, widespread 80s and even 90s along the bay shore. some cooling begins on friday. san francisco and our beaches stay quite pleasant. here's saturday minor cooling, more dramatic cooling on sunday. so highs today from the upper 80s in fremont to 104 in antioch, 98 in

fine dining experience after the city raised concerns it was set to kick off this week. amanda has more on the concerns and how the business owner is responding and kumasi the fine dining experience that was set for the flintstone house in hillsboro booked up in just minutes. >> now the city says there are issues with the stone age omakase sushi experience. the home is in a residential area and restaurants aren't allowed there under the town's zoning zoning rules. >> you know, we certainly see in catering events and those are fine in town. we have many private events that are catered at the town, but this is the first time where i've seen, what it looks to be an attempt to open up a restaurant within the town. >> hillsboro city manager says code enforcement sent a letter to the property and business owner explaining the zoning issue. this was last week after abc seven contacted them. stone age olmecas posted on social media about pausing their operations. the business owner

told us via text that he's running a catering company, not a restaurant. and that quote, we think hillsboro is wrong, but we respect them and don't want to fight with them. therefore, we are refunding reservations and are looking for other venues. there will be more to come soon. end quote. it's unclear what the next step will be, but both parties claim they're willing to collaborate. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. a popular event that brings revenue to small businesses in oakland is reportedly in jeopardy. organizers of first fridays tell the chronicle that they're battling rising costs, decreased attendance and less vending space. first fridays allows vendors to sell food and other items as performers fill telegraph avenue program cost $400,000 last year, but the event came up short about $100,000 for five days was paused this year, so organizers could take time to raise money. but organizers say the break did not bring in enough revenue. new at six businesses in san francisco's tenderloin area will now be forced to close at

midnight because of a newly passed curfew. the board of supervisors gave final and unanimous approval yesterday, so this ordinance requires markets that sell retail items, prepackaged foods or tobacco to close from midnight to five in the morning. so we're talking about corner stores and liquor stores. some businesses, like restaurants and bars, will still be allowed to stay open until 2 a.m. the city is going to be trying out this curfew for two years. the city department of public health will enforce the program up to $1,000 in fines can be handed to businesses who violate the curfew. >> dreamforce is coming back to san francisco this fall, and a legendary performer and egot winner is taking the stage for the concert for kids. oh baby, i just. elton john headlining the exclusive event september 18th at oracle park. it's called the concert for kids. it's a little confusing because it's not like

but i'm tall enough where i could see it. >> oh, perks. >> the perks of being so tall. >> mr. worldwide that would never have pitbull. >> oh, it's 305. >> yeah, it was fun. i mean, from what i could see. >> all right, well, we're getting back into the fun, right? with our excessive heat warning. actually, some dangerous heat arriving, especially tomorrow. today the heat builds. we have low clouds and fog, a lot of it along the coast. it has moved locally inland to spare the air alert today. and a three day stretch of excessive heat headed our way right now it is cool gray, even mist and drizzle there. 56, san francisco 60, in oakland, 62, in hayward with upper 60s in san jose. and the gray sky has made it all the way into the livermore valley. but that will retreat quickly. 57 santa rosa going up to the upper 90s today, so a good 10 to 16 degree jump from yesterday's readings. it was in the upper 80s here, only 87 in livermore yesterday. we'll be well over 100 today, 61 in livermore right now, 60 in concord. so our headlines the

next three days, triple digit heat returns with our excessive heat warning from 11:00 today through 8:00 friday night. so at the coast, though, it'll be nice. it's going to be mostly sunny at times, a little bit of patchy fog, and then looking at the breezy and cooler conditions in time for the weekend, especially on sunday. so upper 60s, even mid 70s as the fog pulls back from marin county, stinson beach, mid 60s, half moon bay and it will get breezy. so a nice day at the shoreline. look at the highs today and tomorrow for our inland valley. should be in the upper 80s. yesterday was what you would expect for mid july. now 107 tomorrow and then you'll see we drop off on saturday. but it looks like we're back to some much cooler weather finally into sunday and monday. so a few more days of this, but starting out in the low 90s. not too hard to take in the south bay, but the air quality will be reduced here and our inland valleys, so you have to keep that in mind as well. so looking at those highs from the low 90s, from santa

set to host the espys. that and so much more on gma. >> just a second, because i think people are surprised at how much of an impact it had on houston for example, i used to live in houston. i don't think people understand that. it is just it's a swamp and there are just bayous and when it rains it can go nowhere. it just sits there. >> yep. and they have developed faster than most cities. and so i think combination of how much sprawl, power lines, how much population has added and that this was the closest a hurricane has made it in proximity wind wise, like to be in that front right quadrant than any. and so i think even a cat one, right, that has 80 plus mile per hour winds can do such significant damage. and they haven't had it. and so anybody who lives here, there, even if they've lived there their whole lives, they're like, oh, this is what that part of the storm looks like. it's a great lesson to that. every storm is so different and unique. >> yeah. and that our infrastructure now really needs

when the plane moves back and forth and the nose of the aircraft makes a figure eight. according to flight tracking website flightaware. the plane resumed flying last week. a preliminary report from the ntsb says the plane was likely damaged in a thunderstorm while it was sitting on a tarmac in

new orleans, may 16th, and that damage was likely missed during maintenance checks on may 23rd. the dutch roll happened during the flight from phoenix to oakland on may 25th. southwest has not commented on the ntsb report. it could be a year before the ntsb releases its final report on what happened. new this morning, san francisco based doordash is stepping up efforts to identify dangerous drivers and removing them from the platform. the announcements in response to complaints from the city of boston. city officials say they have had a big problem with so-called dashers running red lights, driving the wrong way on one way streets and speeding. doordash says the crackdown will start in boston, but could expand to other cities in the future. next, at 631, bay area city has the best drivers in the country when it comes to not being distracted by their phones. then, as covid cases rise, there are no longer defined rules about how to deal with the virus. what a health expert says you should do if you test

slow moving as the commute starts to pick up here at 632, let's send it back to kumasi. >> thanks, amanda. this morning it's not just the bay area that's facing extreme heat, 150 million americans from california to montana are on alert for dangerous conditions. temperatures could even top 100 degrees on the east coast. as abc news reporter lionel moise shares, he has a look at the impact being felt across the country this morning. >> oppressive heat is spreading to more of the nation, breaking records and turning deadly. at least six heat related deaths are now reported in oregon, where temperatures topped 100 for four straight days. >> we're focusing our efforts on our seniors in our community, our neighbors and friends and family members who have not know no ac in their apartment. >> farther south, three hikers have died in the grand canyon in recent days, and a biker died in death valley, where it hit 128 degrees. it's worse than an oven, i don't know, that's like

an oven. >> it's like walking in the oven. you open the oven after 350, more than 150 million americans are on alert for extreme heat. >> today, from california to montana, fresno is bracing for its seventh consecutive day of temperatures, hitting 105 or higher. but it's not just the west. philadelphia and d.c. could experience feel-like temperatures of 110 today. >> having a number gets people focused on wow, this invisible silent thing is really costing us money. >> and now a dollar amount on the cost of these sweltering temperatures. extreme heat events are blamed for $7.7 billion in losses over the last decade, according to a new report from the california department of insurance. and that's just one state. >> heat affects the human body are health. it slows us down. metro systems close down so people aren't getting to work and there's no end in sight. >> this map shows the blistering heat stretching well into next week for much of the country, but it hasn't stopped tourists

from flocking to death valley taking photos with a digital thermometer. >> i don't know how anything can survive out here. >> a brutal heat wave in the pacific northwest a few years ago was blamed for 600 deaths, a reminder that heat is the deadliest form of extreme weather and today, temperatures could shatter records from las vegas at 118 to boise, idaho at 109. lionel moise abc news, new york. >> building a better bay area includes improving public transit, and bart needs money in order to make that happen. a new report is outlining the agency's dire financial situation and the impact on our whole region. abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez is live in daly city and gloria, this report suggests it may take all of us to keep the trains running. >> that's right, reggie, the report highlights that bart will need a lot more public assistance moving forward. it also really highlights the benefits of bart. everything from helping to ease traffic congestion to providing jobs to be more affordable than driving.

the report shows the impact of remote work on the lower ridership numbers as well. places like the peninsula, where we are generally lost population. since the pandemic, so did san francisco and the south bay, and a bart map shows declines of 10 to 50,000 people in these areas. other outer areas along the i-80 corridor. the tri-valley near the delta, gained population. the report shows bart ridership is closely linked to regional office occupancy rates. both have recovered to 43% of pre-pandemic levels. bart riders have come back, but many are not commuting to work the way they had been, instead taking bart only on certain days or for big events like parades or sporting events. now for the funding. pre-pandemic, the report says that bar only received 41% financial assistance from regional state and federal government. in other words, tax dollars that you and i pay and that is low compared to other agencies across the country. going forward, bart will likely

need 70% public assistance. >> i think somehow in our region, we're going to have to get okay with paying more to make sure that the system stays viable because it's going to hurt everybody. it's not just the riders, it's the people who are driving or using other transit are going to be heavily impacted. if bart is not functional. >> now, the report shows if bart did not exist, regional traffic congestion would worsen. for example, drivers could experience up to an additional 19 hours lost to congestion weekly and traffic could increase by 73% on the bay bridge. and we already know that traffic is pretty bad. now bart is facing a multimillion dollar budget deficit by 2026. live in daly city. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you. gloria. today, the oakland fire department will be saying a final goodbye to one of their own. there will be a memorial service aboard the uss hornet in alameda for caden

it easy to identify him. >> virginia is the latest state making a move to keep cell phones out of the classroom in public schools. >> the governor issued an executive order to establish guidance for local schools to adopt by january. research shows children who spend an average of three hours on social media a day double the risk of anxiety and depression today. on average, they spend nearly five hours on social media a day. new york's governor recently signed a bill restricting social media use by minors. >> we know that we've already lost, too many kids or kids that are spiraling for a long time now. >> the us surgeon general recently called for social media platforms to display warnings similar to tobacco and virginia. the order is not an outright ban. it instead calls for age appropriate guidance that would eliminate or restrict phone use during its instructional time. >> now it's your morning money report. albertsons and kroger have released a list of hundreds of grocery stores they plan to sell. if regulators approve a

merger between those two companies. one of the stores on the list is a safeway in san leandro on washington avenue. the merger was announced in 2022, but was stopped by the ftc. now, the ftc is worried about a lack of competition and the control of grocery workers wages. the companies will be going to court again over the merger next month. now we take a live look at the new york stock exchange. as trading gets underway. you can see that we're up about 25 points. >> one city in the south bay is being recognized for having some of the safest drivers in the country. >> san jose has the least amount of people who hold their phones while driving. this is according to a new report by allstate. san francisco ranked number four on that list, the study found. overall honolulu has the safest drivers, with fewer people holding their phone behind the wheel, braking hard or driving too fast. >> some special toads not seeing yosemite more than a decade are back with help from the san francisco zoo. it shared these photos of the threatened species, saying good luck,
