those loved ones tonight. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. we'll get to that in just a moment. but first, the grueling heat wave gripping the entire west coast, more than 150 million americans were under some kind of heat alert. today in the south bay, at least 18 deaths in santa clara county are being linked to the extreme heat that dates back to the start of this month. now, so far this year, california has seen 3500 wildfires and the heat is not helping. they've burned more than 200,000 acres, more than five times the average of previous years, and a spare. the air alert is once again in effect for tomorrow. that is asking you to limit your driving or reduce your gas emissions as best you can. let's get to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya know break just yet. >> no, dan, the heat wave has just started. today was day one and those temperatures soared inland into the triple digits. got up to 105 in livermore, 103 in fairfield. now it's only

going to get hotter tomorrow. excessive heat warnings are up for inland areas, heat advisories elsewhere. other than san francisco and the coast until friday night. and that's because the risk of heat related illnesses will go into the moderate to major category for our inland communities. so definitely watch out. you can clearly see why 108 is going to be the high temperature tomorrow for fairfield, along with livermore, concord 107, san jose 99, santa rosa 102 degrees 106. in morgan hill. that is dangerous heat. we do have a spare the air alert that is in effect for tomorrow, as we are expecting another day of moderate to poor air quality. dan, i'll be back to let you know how long this heat wave is going to last and when you'll finally get a break coming up. >> okay, sandy, thanks a lot. now to that australian ceo who wound up in a san francisco hospital with serious injuries. exactly what happened to him is still a mystery. his family, friends, and his company are all wondering what went wrong. abc

seven news reporter j.r stone spoke with one of the man's former employers and friends. >> this is colin bettles, the ceo of grain producers australia, who was visiting san francisco but is now recovering in a neurological ward at sf general hospital after sustaining major injuries. those close to him say it's unclear what exactly happened, but they fear he may have been attacked. >> he arrived at the hotel in san francisco a little bit after 6:00 on the night of the 4th of july. he went out for a dinner uh- caught an uber, went for a dinner at a well known pizza place, uh- at 8:00 uh- and at 1030 was found on the side of a road uh- in a semi-conscious state. >> this is hotel garrett, where bettles was staying. it's near the federal building at seventh and mission in san francisco. bettles was found somewhere along market street. michael mccormick is an australian lawmaker and the former deputy

prime minister of australia, who colin worked for in the past. the two are still good friends, cormack says. bettles was found without a wallet or phone. he had a gash requiring stitches on the back of his head and a broken eye socket in several places. >> terrible state of affairs. to think that you go over to america uh- on a work trip. you're minding your own business. you're walking back to your hotel and you get set upon, thankfully, some good samaritan has raised the alarm, and, he's now in the best of care. but, terribly worrying for, his family, his friends, his wife. circle of friends in australia. he's very, very well respected in australia. >> colin bettles was on a work related trip here in san francisco. his company issued a statement, and even they don't know what happened. they are urging authorities here to work at finding surveillance video that could help in this investigation. the delay here is the fact that bettles was in a medically induced coma for four

days immediately after this, and hopefully police work at getting more info here because this story is making national headlines in australia. j.r stone, abc seven news. >> well, we wish him the best in a speedy recovery obviously jr as that investigation continues. thank you. a new developments with policy changes that could expand the powers of san francisco police officers to chase suspects in their cars. it had appeared the police commission would would not only take up the changes but vote and move it forward tonight. but that didn't happen. no decision. some of the commissioners want to change the language to include the reporting of arrests by police. >> i agree, i think apprehension is an important thing and were noted in the best practices. i definitely want to agree with with the vice president that i don't think adding this requirement would conflict with prop e for the very reason that we all agree that we could ask for it outside of this revision, and that would be, you know,

it's not it's not a matter of formalities. you know, we certainly couldn't remove any of these things because that would be in conflict with prop e, because prop requires that the department report these things. >> police chief bill scott appeared reluctant, pointing out the commission could ask for this data at any time. >> nothing prevents the commission from getting that information, but the proposition says specifically what needed to be reported. so, i mean, maybe that's the best of both worlds. >> the commission plans to take up the chase police policy issue at its next meeting. we'll keep you updated on what happens tomorrow. governor newsom is set to reveal a new effort to boost public safety in the east bay. he's expected to provide details at a news conference with chp officials for several months now, the governor's office has been heavily involved in the crime crackdown underway in parts of alameda county, particularly in oakland. back in march, he signed off on the installation of nearly 500 high tech traffic cameras to assist

law enforcement in identifying vehicles linked to crimes and on the subject of crime, sideshows are a regular problem in the bay area. we report them, it seems, nearly every week, and tonight local police are teaming up to crack down san jose. police shared a couple of images from the first meeting of a work group to address these dangerous sideshows. several police departments are involved, including san francisco, oakland, antioch, as well as the california highway patrol. they intend to keep meeting and working together to find ways to stop sideshows on our streets. and when it comes to public safety where you live, check out the abc seven neighborhood safety tracker. you'll see crime statistics and trends for oakland san francisco and san jose. you can find that on our website, abc seven news.com. all right. now to your voice. your vote tonight. there are new calls from some prominent democrats for president biden to step aside. the president has remained defiant and has a news conference scheduled for

tomorrow. he's currently meeting with nato leaders. perhaps the biggest voice heard from today was congresswoman nancy pelosi. abc news reporter perry russom with how she responded when asked about biden staying in the race. >> good evening. >> tonight, president biden toasting nato leaders at the white house, the military alliance standing firm for 75 years as the president's alliances within his own party are shifting. a full day of appearances for biden with union leaders, nato members and oval office meetings with foreign leaders, including the new british prime minister. tonight, vermont senator peter welch calling on biden to withdraw from the november election, becoming the first senate democrat to do so. in a blistering op ed in the new york times, democratic fundraiser and actor george clooney says biden needs to step aside. clooney writing, we are not going to win in november with this president. on top of that, we won't win the house and we're going to lose the senate. this isn't only my opinion. this is the opinion of every senator and congress

fist pump and a source tells abc news. senate democrats have scheduled a new meeting for tomorrow afternoon. the group is planning to meet with biden's senior advisers and his campaign chairwoman, perry russom. abc news, washington and with the republican national convention starting on monday, former president donald trump appears to be narrowing down his choices for a running mate today. >> in an interview with fox news radio, trump acknowledged the shortlist includes ohio senator jd vance, north dakota governor doug burgum and florida senator marco rubio. trump says taking on rubio as a running mate would be complicated because they both call florida their home state. trump and rubio would need to forgo florida's 30 electors if they ran on the same ticket. abc news will cover the republican national convention all next week, starting monday. watch live coverage from milwaukee and expert analysis every weeknight, starting at 7 p.m. right here on abc seven. all right, breaking news in alameda, a shooting

investigation is underway. this is just coming into the newsroom. this is at kitty hawk drive and franciscan way. the person who called 911 reported multiple victims inside a home. but police have not confirmed those details. but there is a heavy police presence. we'll bring you any updates on abc seven mornings tomorrow, beginning at 5 a.m. and if we get anything more for you here tonight, i'll certainly pass it along immediately as we enter yet another heat wave, officials are warning that some of the biggest risks to your health could actually be in the water. over the past few weeks, water worries have included fish die offs and algae blooms, the growth of which is sped up by sun and warmth. in one east bay community, residents are looking for solutions because water is a big part of their economy. abc seven news reporter tim johns is in discovery bay. >> head down towards the waterways of discovery bay and east contra costa county, and you'll be greeted with a somewhat unpleasant sight. >> people who come in, the first

thing they'll do is look into the bay and see this green goo. >> the california state water resources control board has issued a warning to stay out of the water after the discovery of algae blooms. tony george is the vice president of the town's chamber of commerce. he says while the algae bloom has happened every summer for the past few years, the recent heat waves have made it occur earlier than normal this year, especially with the temperatures we've had out here up to 112 113 degrees. >> it's been worse than it has been in a while. >> an issue george believes impacts discovery bay not just environmentally but also economically. he says with the warnings in place, he worries visitors will stay away from the town during the summer months, not to mention the locals. many of whom bought their homes so they too could be on the water with the problem getting worse and worse each year, officials here in discovery bay say they're working with both local and state authorities to try and find a more permanent solution, a task that's not always easy, says jim madison of the discovery bay foundation, who has been spearheading many of those efforts. >> working with the state and working with the local. it's all

north carolina tonight. look at this. after their loss to columbia, about a dozen players from uruguay's national team brawled with fans in the stands. the fight started behind the uruguay bench. shortly after the

match ended, the players then climbed a staircase into the mostly pro columbia crowd. uruguay's captain says players went into the crowd to protect their families and calls the whole situation just a disaster. and it really was just a terrible mess, the ap reports. it took police ten minutes to arrive on the scene, so a lot of questions in north carolina tonight. we have been closely following tech layoffs at bay area companies, and now mountain view based intuit has announced an eye focused reorganization plan that includes letting go of 10% of its workforce, the tax preparation and financial software company says it will lay off 1800 employees, but intuit says it expects to hire at least that many in the next fiscal year as it accelerates its focus and emphasis on incorporating artificial intelligence into its products and services. last year, intuit unveiled its generative, ai powered financial assistant. well, it is one of california's

calling cards, obviously, but tonight it is a case of too much of a good thing for wine grape growers in california. much of the state's harvest could go to waste. earlier today on abc seven's program called getting answers at 3 p.m, kyle collins, the manager of operations for allied grape growers, talked about this problem. >> we are in the midst of a historic global wine glut across the world. we see wine demand and case good sales declining as part of a broader decline in alcohol consumption. but in the state of california specifically, we are in an oversupply position in terms of just vineyards in the ground. we have more vineyards in the ground than the market can carry at the moment. and so the degree to which that is still somewhat to be seen. but it is an issue and it is one that is being addressed and has been over the last few months. >> allied grape growers estimates about 30,000 acres of grape vines have been removed in the state this year. all right, here's some good news. a handful

of bay area restaurants are picking up big recognition tonight. now, joining the michelin guide's california selection. they are multi amici in healdsburg, burdell in oakland and three san francisco restaurants as salinas, tia and head 11. these restaurants joined the selection as recommended, and they now have a chance at earning full michelin star awards or bib gourmand honors for good food at moderate prices. that will be at the michelin guide ceremony next month at the ritz carlton in half moon bay. good luck to all. all right. as we said earlier, the heat continues to pound us and it's not letting up, at least for another couple of days. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the forecast. sandhya. yeah, dan. >> but i do have good news for you. by the weekend it's all over. all right, let's talk about the heat alerts across much of the western united states. this heat wave continue. millions of people dealing with advisories or warnings. so we

are in under the heat advisory and the excessive heat warning as well. parts of the bay area. here are some safety tips with this heat wave. drink plenty of water. take breaks in the shade. obviously know the signs of heat illnesses and never leave people or pets inside vehicles. if you don't have ac, which i know some homes don't, here in the bay area, find a fan, find a restaurant or a movie theater to keep cool. high pressure in control of our weather and this ridge has nudged westward enough to bring us the warmth. today the heat will continue to build tomorrow, but in addition to that, the clockwise flow around the high is going to draw up some of the smoke from the southern california wildfires into our area in the upper parts of the atmosphere. so 7 a.m. tomorrow you'll notice some haze. it continues at 11 a.m. don't be surprised if you continue to see this through the evening hours. looking at a live picture from our mount tam cam. the marine layer has compressed under that building. high pressure. it's about 800ft deep,

so it's not going very far. as a matter of fact, it's confined to the coast on live doppler seven temperatures at the beaches in the 50s, inland areas. you're still holding on to the warmth in the 80s, up to 20 degrees warmer right now in livermore. a sign of what's to come. sutro tower showing you a beautiful view of san francisco tomorrow. even hotter inland coastal areas will be mild and mainly sunny for the afternoon and for your weekend. relief from the heat arrives as the sea breeze picks up and we get more of an established marine layer tomorrow morning. unlike this morning, limited fog temperatures in the 50s to 70s as we head into the noontime hour, 1:00 hour already in the triple digits away from the coastline, and you will notice up to 105 in concord by the early afternoon. i'll show you what they'll ultimately end up. 50s and 60s for most of you. 70s, while inland to start off the day tomorrow afternoon, 105, in the south bay in los gatos, 99 in san jose on the peninsula, 95 in redwood city. getting you up to 70. in pacifica, downtown
