new calls for biden to quit his reelection campaign over concerns about his mental acuity. vermont's peter welsh has become the first democrat in the senate to publicly call for biden to step aside, and the website axios reports. senate leader chuck schumer is privately signaling to donors that he's open to biden, dropping out. schumer said this to reporters tuesday. >> as i've said before, i'm with joe in the house at least nine democrats are now calling on biden to withdraw, and former house speaker nancy pelosi sent shock waves through the capitol yesterday, saying she'll support whatever decision the president makes. >> that's the way it is. whatever he decides, we go with pelosi's comments significant because biden has already said multiple times he's staying in the race. >> abc's rachel scott caught up with pelosi, asking why she seemed to suggest that biden's decision might not be final. >> do you believe that him waiting so long to make this decision could harm any comments in the hallway about the fate of our nation, i think. are you concerned whether or not he can

not run against vice president kamala harris. >> and i'm curious if you still feel that way. >> of course. yes >> biden closes the nato summit with a news conference today, his first of the year unscripted taking questions from reporters, his performance crucial if he hopes to quell the concerns stemming from last month's debate. andrew. >> christiane. thank you. now to the weather. at least two tornadoes have touched down in western new york, spawned by the remains of hurricane beryl. no injuries are reported. despite the extensive damage to buildings, trees and power lines. experts say tuesday's tornado that hit mount vernon, indiana, was packing winds of 140mph. >> meanwhile, extreme heat is gripping much of the country. dozens of heat related deaths are being reported on the west coast and now, from power outages to mosquito borne diseases, the heat is bringing a host of new problems. this morning, the current stretch of historic heat is doing more than just smashing records in the u.s. it's resulting in more americans getting infected with a tropical disease.

>> wherever you have a significant number of mosquitoes in warm, hot environments is where you see dengue transmission states as far north as illinois and new york. >> now, seeing cases of dengue fever nearly 200 infections now confirmed in new york and new jersey alone, more than 2500 across the u.s. and puerto rico, five times higher than this time last year. transmission occurs when someone is bitten by an infected mosquito, experts say, with higher temperatures and higher rainfall amounts, mosquitoes that carry dengue viruses are extending their range. >> mosquitoes love warm weather, so over time we are starting to see dengue spread in mosquitoes more northward. >> the most common symptoms are fever, nausea, vomiting and a rash. they begin within two weeks and last 2 to 7 days. meanwhile, pest control companies are on overdrive with calls up 30% in some areas due to bugs and rodents trying to beat the heat. >> just like we don't want to be

outside in the heat, neither does anything else. >> but there is no end in sight for millions of americans and critters, especially in the west. las vegas could hit 118 today after setting a record for a fifth consecutive day in houston with temperatures in the 90s, an estimated 400,000 customers could be without power into next week. in the wake of hurricane beryl, houston's utility company under fire, it recently drafted a plan to improve infrastructure, but at a cost of $2 billion. it means higher electric bills in the future. in california, the bay area is seeing the second heat wave this month at least 18 possible heat related deaths have been reported in santa clara county. we will check today's forecast in just a few moments. >> the federal trade commission is reportedly planning to file a major lawsuit over the high cost of prescription drugs, the drug industry's so-called middlemen. cvs, cigna and unitedhealth are accused of driving up the price of insulin and other drugs by

excluding rivals and steering patients to their own products, sources say. the lawsuit will focus on profits from rebates that drug companies pay to get their medications approved for insurance coverage. the middlemen and the drug makers have blamed each other for the high prices the faa is investigating. >> after multiple tires on this american airlines flight exploded on the runway in tampa, forcing the pilot to abort takeoff. sparks shot from the blown tire, and the airline says it was a mechanical issue and no one was hurt. on monday, a united flight leaving l.a. lost a tire during takeoff, and passengers had to brace for a bumpy landing. back in march, a tire fell off another united plane, crashing into cars down below. >> now to milwaukee and disturbing video from outside a hotel showing an encounter between a man and hotel securit. that man ended up dead, and officials are now reviewing the case as a homicide. justice for who? >> just for the justice for you. >> just this morning, the family of devonte mitchell, who died

outside a milwaukee hotel nearly two weeks ago, is demanding justice with the district attorney now reviewing the case as a homicide. surveillance video appears to show the 43 year old being pinned down by hotel security during a struggle. stay down. please stop fighting. >> please stay down. >> police have said mitchell, whose family says had mental health issues entered the hyatt hotel, caused a disturbance and then fought with security guards as they escorted him out. the family's lawyers say video from inside the hotel also shows mitchell being punched and kicked, and they say a witness saw mitchell had trouble breathing. >> he ran for his life. y'all he was trying to leave. >> it was shocking. it was riveting. and it is heartbreaking. >> the family is now awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death. the da saying all aspects of these actions, including mr. mitchell's death and use of force by hotel

personnel, will be closely examined. mitchell's mother says her son was murdered. >> to see him go out this world the way he did that was devastating. that would never leave my mind. that's going to live with me for the rest of my life. >> hyatt says those security officers worked for a separate company. hyatt is calling for them to face criminal charges. >> it is time now for your thursday weather. >> good morning. today will be the final day with direct impacts from tropical storm beryl crossing parts of northern new york and the new england states, with still some locally heavy rain for a time, it's mainly a main issue from the afternoon onward as that slides out to sea. finally, there will be a new disturbance that surges up the east coast. it's disorganized, but it will send some heavy rain to the atlantic and mid-atlantic seaboard here late on to friday and friday night into saturday. for accuweather. i'm jeff cornish for abc news. >> coming up, shoppers at costco

america, good morning america every day if you like. >> some ugly scenes after last night's colombia uruguay soccer match in charlotte, a brawl spilling into the stands. some of the uruguay players fighting the colombia fans, people throwing drinks. players blamed a lack of security for things getting out of hand. it took more than ten minutes for police to restore order. >> we turn now to alec baldwin's movie set shooting trial getting underway in new mexico. opening arguments kicking off the involuntary manslaughter trial of actor alec baldwin, he pointed the gun at another human

being, cocked the hammer and pulled that trigger in reckless disregard for miss hutchins. >> this was an unspeakable tragedy. but alec baldwin committed no crime in 2021, the prop gun baldwin was holding on the rust movie set went off, killing cinematographer halyna hutchins. >> prosecutors claim baldwin was reckless, ignoring industry rules for firearm safety, saying their evidence proves the gun could not have been fired without the trigger being pulled. >> you will see him put his finger on the trigger when his finger is not supposed to be on the trigger. >> baldwin denies pulling the trigger. his lawyers argued baldwin was the actor on a set where multiple safeguards were supposed to be. in place. they say he was told the gun was col, meaning it had no live rounds. even if he intentionally pulled the trigger like the prosecutor just demonstrated. >> that doesn't make him guilty of homicide. >> the defense blames the

movie's armorer, hannah gutierrez. she was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison after prosecutors accused her of failing to notice she had at least one live round mixed in with the dummy rounds. >> and you will hear no evidence, not one word, that alec baldwin had anything to do with that real bullet being brought onto that set. the evidence you will see will paint a real life picture of a real life workplace where this defendant mishandled this gun. >> testimony resumes today with a police investigator expected back on the stand if convicted, baldwin could face up to 18 months in prison. >> the cost of a costco membership is about to go up. the first increase since 2017 will see regular fees rise. $5 to $65 per year. executive memberships will rise by $10. the increases take effect in september. discount retailer big lots is closing up to 40 stores

whales. he says about a thousand of them joined his side. he had just left eastern canada on his way to the uk. he said he loved the experience, but he did acknowledge it was pretty scary. >> now to some scary moments over land in colorado, a hiker captured this scene as a small plane nearly crashed into a mountain. that's devil's thumb. the cessna stalled and plummeted towards the ground before the pilot righted the plane. just in time. witnesses were preparing for the worst. >> you don't think anything bad's going to happen until he got really close, and i was like, oh, this isn't looking exciting anymore. this is looking concerning. thankfully, they pulled out of it. it was just wild to see. >> the faa is investigating a passenger is blaming jetblue for severe burns to her body, saying they were caused by hot tea that was served during turbulence. >> tijana lewis claims the decision to serve tea in those conditions amounts to gross negligence. she is suing for $1.5 million. no comment yet from jetblue.

>> we turn now to american workplace. the american workplace culture and a new push to force companies to provide paid leave to all employees. >> nothing ever gets done in washington unless regular people stand up and demand it. >> pushing for paid leave. activists yesterday delivered a petition with more than 55,000 signatures to members of congress, demanding legislation that would allow workers nationwide to take paid time off for family or for medical reasons. >> we are one of only seven countries in the world that doesn't guarantee any form of paid leave federally for its people, which means we are not just losing to other wealthy countries, we're losing to nearly everybody. >> the petition, organized by advocacy groups, paid leave for all and moms rising, aims to create a permanent national paid leave program. >> paid leave is good for families. it's good for the economy. it's good for our country. it's good for national security. >> recent data shows only 27% of private sector workers have access to paid family leave through their employer, and only 43% had short term disability

insurance. but critics say paid leave requirements would be government overreach and would force businesses to raise prices to pay for those benefits, likely passing on the extra costs to consumers. currently, 13 states have passed paid leave programs, but these activists want a federal law. right now, federal law only allows certain workers to take unpaid leave. >> coming up, pat sajak's big return plus, why a las vegas casino is being forced to give out nearly $2 million.
