region with these high temperatures. it's really gripping much of the country. >> good morning. welcome to thursday. it's july 11th. >> i'm going to start the check of our forecast with lisa. >> we are so lucky though right. with that breeze. i mean, you know where you can cool down. but today, yes is the hottest day where temperatures will be over 110 in some spots. that's why our excessive heat warning continues in our inland valleys, as well as our heat advisory right on through 8:00 on friday. spare the air alert today with moderate air quality right now from the east bay to the north bay. and that will could get potentially worse throughout the afternoon as the heat builds. so high pressure still in control upper elevations los gatos there 83 degrees 56 sfo 67 in san jose. good morning to you. we've got mid 50s from sonoma and the fog certainly less pervasive than it was yesterday. so it is less than a thousand feet. it's compressed. we're warmer this morning from fairfield to livermore by about 8 to 9 degrees. so getting a jump start on that warming. and as we look

members were killed inside a home on kittyhawk road near franciscan way. this happened last night. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live near the home and, gloria, do police have anyone in custod? >> yes, reggie, there is a person of interest in custody right now. and police say that there is no threat to the public. and you can see behind me, they have taped off this area. there are evidence markers out and police are still investigating. they've been here all night long. now the alameda police department posted on facebook that three people were killed and additional people are being treated at local hospital. police say they got a call last night from someone saying their neighbor was shot here on kittyhawk road. they found the victim and multiple family members who had been shot, including juveniles. three people died an additional family members are in hospitals right now. and again, police say there is no threat to the public and we're working on getting more information on exactly what happened here. we also saw the coroner was on scene and just

left a little while ago. live in alameda. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you. gloria this morning, a mystery that is making international headlines. an australian ceo on a trip to san francisco in a hospital with serious injuries. and it's not clear where or how he got them. now we're hearing from a friend. colin bettles is the ceo of grain producers australia. michael mccormick is a former coworker and friend. he says bettles arrived to the city the night of july 4th and was staying at hotel garrett, which is at seventh and mission. he was found around 1030 that night along market street in a semi-conscious state without his wallet and phone, and he had a gash that required stitches down the back of his head and a broken eye socket. >> you'd think he'd be able to walk down, you know, a well-lit street, one of the busiest thoroughfares, in, you know, a city of with a population of close to a million people. and, you know, be okay. but uh- uh, obviously, for paul, colin, that

wasn't the case. >> bettles was on a work trip here in san francisco. san francisco police are looking for more information about what happened. >> happening today, governor newsom will reveal a new effort to boost public safety in the east bay. he's going to hold a news conference with chp officials in just a few hours. amanda, that announcement is coming as there's new reporting about some challenges the governor's office appears to be facing working with the alameda county da. >> yeah, reggie, according to new reporting by politico, the governor's office is accusing the office of alameda county da pamela price of ignoring offers to send attorneys to help prosecute crimes. now, the offer by the governor was first made back in february. politico got a hold of a letter sent by the governor's cabinet secretary to price his office. it reads in part, despite our outreach, your office has yet to make use of these resources. that's the end of the, quote. political reports, the governor is now rescinding his offer and redeploying those attorneys to the california department of justice. we don't know why

price's office hasn't responded to the governor's office. politico asked, but hasn't yet received a response. we also reached out this morning, but of course it is still very early to hear back. this comes at a very sensitive time for da price. she's facing a recall campaign, accused of being too soft on crime, though supporters have argued she's doing the job that she was elected to do. governor newsom's office has been involved in the efforts to crack down on crime in alameda county, especially in oakland. he signed off on the installation of 500 high tech traffic cameras in march. they are meant to help law enforcement identify vehicles linked to crimes. as for that announcement today, it's expected to happen at 10 a.m. we'll stream it live. if you have our abc seven bay area apps, we'll notify you as soon as it starts back to you. >> thanks, amanda. the governor's announcement comes as we're seeing a new analysis questioning the accuracy of oakland's reported crime drop. according to the san francisco chronicle, an oakland report, the police department's data was based on incomplete stats from

last year. the reported 33% drop in overall crime may actually be closer to 20. the discrepancy may be due to a delay in residents reporting crimes like burglaries and auto theft. in a statement, the oakland police department says its weekly crime reports are up to date and accurate for crimes involving immediate danger and loss of life. >> oakland police and city council members are teaming up to address crime along the hegenberger corridor. yesterday, chief floyd mitchell and council member trevor reed met with the store manager of this gas station. you remember this video? this location has been the victim of ransacking multiple times in the past few weeks. >> as a business owner, he should not have to go through what we saw on the video here, and we're going to do everything to help him in the future to keep this from happening again. >> he ensured us that things will change, you know? but there is i'm not going to say there's things that we could correct from our end. you know, the way we respond to a crime. you know, how we talk to the police

department to make it a priority? >> lane is not here as leaders and police work to make staffing changes to patrol the hegenberger corridor, the owner of that shop says he's making changes to. >> he's planning to have two employees working at all times, and will be considering closing closer to sunset in san francisco. >> the police commission has delayed a decision on a policy that expand the powers of police officers when it comes to engaging suspects in car chases. the police commission took up the issue yesterday and was expected to move that proposal forward. some commissioners want to change the language to include the reporting of arrests by police. police chief bill scott argued that the commission could ask for that data any tim. >> nothing prevents the commission from getting that information, but the proposition says specifically what? yeah, needed to be reported. so, i mean, maybe that's the best of both worlds. >> the commission plans to take up the chase policy issue at its

meeting next week, when it comes to public safety where you live, you can check out the abc7 neighborhood safety tracker, see crime stats and trends for oakland, san francisco and san jose. you can find it by going to abc7 news.com. >> the current stretch of historic heat is doing more than just smashing records across the country. it's resulting in more people being infected with the tropical disease. there is a significant number of mosquitoes in tropical climates, and these insects carry viruses like dang states as far north as illinois and new york are seeing cases of dengue fever. more than 2500 infections have been confirmed across the country and in puerto rico, which is five times higher than it was this time last year. the commission, the transmission happens when an infected mosquito bites someone, experts say, with higher temperatures and higher rainfall amounts, the mosquitoes that carry these viruses are extending their range. >> mosquitoes love warm weather, so over time, we were starting to see dengue spread in mosquitoes more northward.

>> the most common symptoms are fever, nausea, vomiting, and rash. they start within two weeks and last anywhere from 2 to 7 days. >> good morning. we've got a high pressure firmly in control. today begins to fade away tomorrow. so as it's at its strength today, we'll see anywhere from 3 to 8 degrees of warming. from yesterday's highs. so that is going to bring a very hot day inland. we had our seven day stretch early july. now we're in the middle of a shorter stretch. we'll see some cooling as soon as tomorrow. right now it is mild in spots from the upper 60s in the south bay to the mid 60s in the east bay. we've got 55 in sonoma and the deck of low clouds not as expansive. this morning we could see a little smoke drift up from the south. but you know, with high pressure in control, putting a lid on the atmosphere and our spare the air alert, you're going to see some haze out there, even though this is really high in the atmosphere. so more than likely it's just that poor to moderate air

quality. you notice today, even hotter inland, we're going to add about three degrees. it was 105 in livermore. maybe 108 today. it stays comfortable at the coast with plenty of sunshine temperatures in the 60s. and as we look towards the weekend, it's cooler. in fact, we're going to see significant cooling. this is your friday forecast where we still have 101 in concord. so over 100 degrees in antioch and livermore. but it should be a little bit better than today, than back to the 80s. around the bay shore temperatures will jump up as much as nine degrees today in san francisco. notice on saturday we're back into the 60s with some mid 90s inland and even cooler a bit below average on sunday. so get set for mid 80s in oakland today. 102 santa rosa. looking at a hot day in the south bay. 99 san jose, possibly 107, in concord. reggie kumasi lisa, thank you. >> more pressure on president biden to step aside a new poll out overnight showing how americans feel as the president prepares to address the public

on president biden's campaign for reelection. now, two thirds of americans, including a majority of his own supporters, now say he should step aside and leave the race. that poll, coming on a critical day for the president now, just hours from now, the president will try to quiet calls to end his campaign with a solo news conference from the nato summit in washington, dc. congressional democrats have mixed messaging on whether he should stay in the presidential race. speaker emerita nancy pelosi said yesterday she wants to restart the conversation with the president after the nato summit is over. abc news senior congressional correspondent

the heat that we've been experiencing has made for critically dry conditions. that means regular tasks like mowing grass can easily start a fire. governor newsom and other officials issued the warning yesterday during an update on wildfires burning across california and right now there are 20 active fires. cal fire says more than 3500 wildfires have burned. over 207,000 acres so far this year. that's about 500 wildfires. more compared to the same time last year. governor newsom says climate change is a major factor. >> we say it all the time. we're getting a lot hotter, experiencing unprecedented record heat. we take this mission very seriously. but the mission, again, we wanted to highlight today is the mission that you hear behind me with the helicopters that are moving. and it's remarkable investment of equipment unprecedented in california's history. >> the governor says california has the largest fire suppression fleet in the country, and more resources are expected to arrive soon. >> it is one of california's

calling cards, but wine growers are finding themselves in a too much of a good thing situation. much of the state's harvest could go to waste this year. on abc seven's getting answers, kyle collins, manager of operations for allied grape growers, talked about the issue. >> we are in the midst of a historic global wine glut. across the world. we see wine demand and case good sales declining as part of a broader decline in alcohol consumption. but in the state of california specifically, we are in an oversupply position in terms of just vineyards in the ground. we have more vineyards in the ground than the market can carry at the moment. and so the degree to which that is still somewhat to be seen, but it is an issue and it is one that is being addressed and has been over the last few months. >> allied grape growers estimates about 30,000 acres of grape vines have been removed in the state this year. >> a huge congratulations to our friends over at pixar in

weight right now. right now it is 90 degrees. relative humidity 40. mount diablo 85 degrees. relative humidity 17. in ben lomond 83. that just gives you an idea when you go up in height. we haven't cooled off and the heat just builds. so not only do we have a spare, the air alert and we're in the middle of our excessive heat warning, we are dry. we are warm in the upper elevations for another two days. so as we look outside, not a whole lot of fog there from the golden gate bridge, air quality poor in our inland east bay, santa clara valley. that's why we have the spare the air alert moderate elsewhere, and at the surface temperatures are in the 50s 56 in san francisco, 55 in sonoma. they do get warmer as you get into our inland valleys. and then you go up 500ft, 800ft. a lot of people live at 1000ft, even 2000ft, and it is much warmer. good thing we don't have the winds to go with it. it is 8 to 9 degrees warmer than it was yesterday in livermore and fairfield, so we could see about 108 today. here's a look at the

other upper elevation temperatures from mount diablo. we talked about that 85 the oakland hills, 84. the east foothills in santa clara, 85 in mount omnium at 86. and then you look at spring valley, just around half moon bay, 59 degrees. so another 40 to 42 degrees spread today as we see 108 in concord, 101 tomorrow. and then we'll begin to cool off below average by the second half of the weekend into monday and tuesday. so today in the south bay, it's going to be a hot one. 99 san jose, 93, in sunnyvale on the peninsula, redwood city jumps up about eight degrees today for 95 upper 80s palo alto, san francisco, you're going to be nine degrees warmer than yesterday at 77. and you head up to the north bay 100 novato 102, in santa rosa bayshore. oakland's warmer by about six degrees today. 8596 castro valley. and you head inland. wow it's another scorcher with 105 in san ramon, 108 in brentwood. the

time in their backyard. they built it themselves. >> we've lived on this property for about 27 years. built it from the top down or bottom up, but most of their time spent outside recently involves this fishing dead voles out of the pool. >> it's a problem that began back in the spring. >> on an average day i take out of my pool anywhere between 6 to 9 voles every single day. >> voles are small rodents, similar to rats or hamsters. there are so many voles, it's at the point where they are attracting predators. here is a herring eating one of the voles. raccoons come to go for a swim and grab a late night snack. >> we have, hawks coming through. we have i can go, the list can go on. >> he hears the animals scattering through the bushes and sees evidence of them destroying their plants. >> i'm catching, on average, 7 or 8 every day. >> neighbor jim konzen deals with the same problem. >> unfortunately, at the hardware store, they know me by

it's so dangerous. good morning everybody. it's thursday, july 11. >> oh, we have a pretty background for once this week. it's been so great. lisa. good morning. >> yes. it's gorgeous. you know that marine layer is compressed and i've got some good pictures to go with that to. our excessive heat warning continues through tomorrow and we'll see. the hottest day today possibly about 108 concord and livermore. and our advisory inside the bay, where we'll see 90 redwood city, fremont, moderate air quality, right now it's a spare the air alert. so we'll see the air quality decline throughout the day. but what a gorgeous shot right from our sutro tower camera. we can see how diffuse that fog deck is. 56 san francisco 62. in hayward already 67 in san jose. and a look from mount tam. yes, that's what happens when the weight of the atmosphere presses down on that marine layer. it is close to the ground there. 52 petaluma 69. in livermore. and compared to yesterday, i already have a head start on the warming by about ten degrees. so there's the fog and then it pulls back quickly throughout the mid morning

police say a suspected kidnaping that happened on tuesday night does not appear to be a random crime. the incident happened at the powell street station. officers say they got a call about a teenage girl being taken from the station. and forced into a car by a man. they checked surveillance video and that confirmed what witnesses told them. this video, taken by an abc seven viewer, shows san francisco police arresting the 37 year old suspect early yesterday morning. the person who took the video says the intersection is mcallister and larkin, which is right across from civic center plaza. bart police gave an update on their investigation. >> there may be a potential relationship between the suspect and the victim. this doesn't appear to have been a random crime and the person was not. our victim was not actually riding bart at the time of the incident. they had arrived in the area in a vehicle. >> the teenager was found yesterday morning and reunited with her family. >> an illegal cockfighting ring has been uncovered in the santa

cruz mountains. deputies say they were originally doing a welfare check on a home in unincorporated los gatos, and they noticed something unusual about another home nearby. well, deputies got a search warrant and when they return, they say they found 200 roosters and at least ten guns. they say they also found blades. the suspect attached to the roosters while fighting. it's very rare that we see these cases and even more rare for our deputies to quite literally stumble upon something like this. one person was arrested. they are now facing 12 different charges. >> sideshows are a regular problem here in the bay area. now local police are teaming up to find a solution. san jose police shared images from the bay area's working group's first meeting. the group was created to address the illegal street activity. multiple departments are involved, including san francisco, oakland, antioch, as well as the california highway patrol. san jose mayor matt mehan spoke at yesterday's

meeting. officers say the working group has more meetings in the future. >> we are seeing firsthand the dangers of illegal fireworks. a man is in the hospital this morning with burns after he was hit by a large firework on the 4th of july. you can see just him showing us what was going on and his legs are wrapped. as you can see here, because of the severity of his injuries. now the victim wants to remain anonymous, but he says he was in the alviso area with his wife when he saw the fireworks. >> we saw that they were working on pretty big things, right. so we started to go on the side to pass it and just just walk away. right. and then in a in one second, that was it. you know, we were on the floor burn. i just i just looked at my wife. her skin was falling from her legs. >> oh that is terrible. well, this is video of the illegal fireworks victims say when they call 911, people told them,

quote, we don't do that around here. >> the one in santa clara county, 18 deaths since the start of this month are being linked to the intense heat. eight of those deaths were among people over the age of 65. most were found in their homes at least two were unhoused. charitable organizations have responded by handing out water and food to people experiencing homelessness, including those living in motor homes with no ac. >> but people are just in a state right now. they're hungry, they're extremely thirsty, and they're in a point where they can't just go and help themselves. it needs to come to them. they are just so depleted and really on the edge right now. >> the coroner says the cases are still being investigated and the exact number could change over the next few weeks. meanwhile, santa clara county is keeping its 20 cooling centers open for several more days as we deal with another spike in temperatures. >> officials are warning that some of the biggest risks to your health could actually be in the water. over the past few

weeks, water worries have included algae blooms. the sun and the warmth are speeding up the growth of those blooms. and amanda residents in one east bay town are looking for solutions and kumasi state water officials have issued a warning to stay out of the water after algae blooms appeared in discovery bay in east contra costa county. >> the town's chamber of commerce says the algae bloom has been seen every summer for the past few years. but as you mentioned, the recent heat waves have made it happen earlier than normal. they say it impacts the town, not just environmentally but also economically with the warnings in place, they worry visitors will stay away. this summer. town officials are working with local and state authorities to try to find a permanent solution. they've been using special hydrogen peroxide treatments, which have proven effective in killing the algae. but now it's a matter of getting funding and permits to keep it going. >> we can't keep kicking the can down the road anymore. it's time to buckle up. and we got to. we got to figure out how to get this done. >> state officials are

investigating reports from some people who believe they got sick by the algae in discovery bay. they urge people not to swim, boat or do any other activities until further notice. kumasi. >> thanks, amanda. a popular park in monterey county could be closed for weeks while crews clean up hundreds of dead fish that have washed ashore. county officials initially reported. the fish are dying at lake san antonio because of the heat wave. they said it caused oxygen depletion in the warm water, but the department of fish and wildlife is saying the water still has to be tested to determine the exact cause before the park closed, some residents said they don't mind the dead fish. >> i was really a bit shocked because we were just here two weeks ago and there was none of that. i've been fishing this lake for 65 years, so these fish aren't going to keep us from swimming in the water. >> officials say the dead fish likely had no posed, no risk to humans in the water, and closing it is out of an abundance of caution. >> some of y'all are nasty

downtown, 55 half moon bay, 60, in oakland, 62 hayward, san jose. upper 60s in the view from mount tam shows how close to the ground that marine layer is. 58 in napa, there's fog at the coast. it'll stay there. we should get some sun at the beaches today. upper 60s, keeping it mild. now as we go into about the 11:00 hour, look how dry it is from concord, 25% relative humidity and san jose. and then when you add on those 90 and 100 plus degree temperatures, we get down to 11% in concord, 18% in napa. so upper elevations are much warmer, much drier, and it's going to take several days till we see that marine layer push all the way inland. we'll see a little bit of that into your friday. that's why the cooldown begins. but as we go through your thursday, you'll notice that it banks up right along the coast. the deck of low clouds were mostly sunny and that here it is overnight friday, pushing into the north bay. but then it pulls back for another hot day for friday afternoon. not quite

city has a vision for a bicycle network. sfmta is working on a plan. this week. it presented three possible scenarios to residents and business owners in the north beach neighborhood. one option includes bike lanes protected with permanent barriers. >> scenario a really presents a highly protected network. these are bike lanes that are protected with permanent barriers and some of the trade offs with a network like that is that there's a lot of parking removal. >> other options would have less impact on parking spots, but also less protection for cyclists. residents and merchants say their main concern. the impact these changes could have on businesses in the area. more public meetings are being planned. officials hope to have a proposal for the citywide network finalized by early next year. >> ev charging stations are

everywhere in the bay area, and with them come those large fans to cool down the equipment. but one station in san francisco is becoming an issue because of the noise. neighbors on clara street in soma say this is a constant nuisance. they say for the six to the to nine months that these fans have been running, it's been hard to work or even sleep because of the sound. reporter so we tested the decibel reading outside of one resident's apartment door, and it read 70. to put that into perspective, according to san francisco's noise and sound code, anything over 50 to 60db is considered to be over the maximum acceptable limit for noise outside of a residential property. now, the company who owns these charging stations said in a statement. while our charging stations meet all the city permit requirements, we have tried several options to mitigate the complaint of one resident
