inflation. the fed has signaled it's getting closer to an interest rate cut. what that could mean for your bottom line, plus what costco is doing for the first time since 2017. >> a lot of inflation news coming up. president biden vowing to save his candidacy as more democrats raise questions and concerns. we have a new poll this morning on what americans think about biden's age, the state of the race against donald trump, and a new finding about kamala harris against trump. president biden will try to quiet critics with a solo conference at the nato summit in washington. chief correspondent mary bruce starts us off. good morning, mary. >> this is a make or break moment for this president. his campaign knows every word in this press conference will be scrutinized. any signs of struggle or a poor performance, and this steady stream of democrat defections, including a major new one overnight, could become a flood. this morning, president biden preparing for a critical test in his fight to stay in this race, facing reporters in a rare solo news conference at the end of

the three-day nato summit. >> we can and will defend every inch of nato territory, and we will do it together. >> democrats have urged the 81-year-old to lean more into unscripted moments, to show he has the stamina to defeat donald trump. but as biden tries to calm nerves on the world stage, this morning the pressure on him to rethink his decision to stay in the race is growing. overnight, the first democrat in the senate calling for him to step aside. in his words, "for the good of the country." peter welch of vermont writing biden "saved us from donald trump once and wants to do it again, but he needs to reassess whether he is the best candidate to do so. in my view, he is not." on the other side of the capitol, the ninth house democrat urging biden to drop out. even nancy pelosi, the powerful former speaker of the house, is sending a strong signal that democrats are still very much divided.

pelosi going public, saying she'll support whatever decision the president makes. >> it's up to the president to decide if he's going to run. we are all encouraging him to make that decision, because time is running short. >> but the president says he has decided, and he isn't going anywhere. pelosi's suggestion that biden's decision might not be final sending shock waves through capitol hill. >> i have not talked to speaker emeritus pelosi yet. >> our rachel scott pressing her on what she meant. >> do you believe that him waiting -- >> i'm not making any comments in the hallway about the fate of our nation, okay? >> are you concerned whether or not he can win in november? >> i think he can win. >> do you think he should run for reelection? >> am i speaking english to you? i'm not going to be making any statements about any of that right now in the hallway. >> pressure on the president is

growing from outside washington, too. in another blow to biden, actor and democratic megadonor george clooney writing in "the new york times," "i love joe biden, but we need a new nominee." just three weeks ago he raised a record $30 million for the president at a star-studded hollywood fund-raiser, but now the oscar-winning actor saying the joe biden he saw then was the same man we all witnessed at the debate. clooney then warning democrats will lose the white house and both chambers of congress if the president stays at the top of the ticket. then, ending with this: "joe biden is a hero. he saved democracy in 2020. we need him to do it again in 2024." now, in just a few hours, president biden's top campaign aides will be on the hill meeting with senate democrats, trying to quell their concerns and get democrats to fall back in line, but the campaign tells me they are clear-eyed and they know it is going to take a lot of work to get everyone back on the same page, george. >> mary, thanks. let's bring in rick klein with our new poll.

big concerns about president biden's age. >> good morning, george. a new poll with "the washington post" and ipsos shows his standing overall. 85% of the country thinks that joe biden right now is too hold to be president. that's up sharply over the past year. 60% of the country thinks the same about president trump, but that is nowhere near biden's number. when it comes to what he should do next, two-thirds of the country, 67% of voters overall, think that joe biden should step aside and let someone else run in his place. that includes more than six in ten democrats, even more than half of biden's own supporters saying right now they would rather he step aside and let another democrat take the ticket instead. but with biden defiant, we have a matchup with two very unpopular candidates. biden viewed favorably by just 42% of the country. trump's numbers worse, only 34% favorability, 25 points underwater. yet, despite all of this, george, this is a dead heat of the race. two weeks after the debate so much has changed, but the horse

race hasn't. a single point within the margin of error. for contrast, back in april he led by two points. we're basically where we've been all along, george. >> and that new finding about vice president kamala harris. >> the numbers are within the margin of error, very small, but we see kamala harris doing better than joe biden would do in a hypothetical matchup. also intriguing, george, we asked democrats in this poll, if biden doesn't run, who should run instead? the answer overwhelmingly harassed. about a third of democratic voters. no other candidate even reached the double digits. george? >> rick klein, thank you. >> thank you both for that. we turn now to dangerous weather across the country as remnants of beryl slammed to the northeast. the storm bringing new flood threat from the carolinas to the mid-atlantic. ginger is tracking that plus the extreme heat. ginger, good morning. >> good morning to you. michael, we have been talking about beryl for nearly two weeks, but now we are done. not before it left all the tornado warnings and actual

tornadoes from louisiana, ef-3 in southern indiana, to the record number of tornado warnings in the state of new york in the last 24 hours. >> oh, my goodness gracious, look at that. >> across the northeast, remnants of hurricane beryl spinning up tornadoes and dropping up to a half foot of rain. >> we got a lot of water. we have a lot of standing water, a lot of unpassable roads. >> and vermont streets flooding after 4-6 inches of rain fell in just a few hours. trash cans floating through the floodwater. in new york, 42 tornado warnings, the most ever issued in one day. two of those tornadoes confirmed, one with winds up to 110 miles per hour. outside buffalo, dozens of trees taken down, parts of the roof ripped off this barn, this part collapsing. >> it completely annihilated our shed. >> this giant tree barely missing that home. in houston there are still more than a million customers without power after hurricane beryl roared through early monday.

now houston is sweltering with heat indices up to 106 degrees. the city's largest power company says more than 400,000 customers could stay off-line through early next week. >> that is just dangerous to have that. i know we have already seen one heat death down in texas because of it, but we will look at this new thing the national hurricane center has their eye on. a low pressure system, low chance of getting a name or development, but a high chance of flooding parts of the mid-atlantic and southeast. i want you to pay attention. along that stationary front you have the wraparound moisture on the bermuda high, and it will pump in from north carolina, like raleigh, the triangle, down to richmond, the delmarva peninsula, all of delaware, and southern new jersey. this is for the couple days where you end up with 3-5 inches of rainfall falling really quickly. we should mention, heat wise, even though we get a break from some of this rain along parts of the northeast, by next week, our next official heat wave. philadelphia has already had

eight days at 95 plus. they average only seven in the summer. we've got a lot of summer to go. >> a long way to go, ginger. thank you for that. we turn now to another terrifying incident involving a boeing plane. video shows the american airlines flight blowing a tire as it was about to take off in tampa. trevor ault has the latest for us. good morning, trevor. >> good morning, michael. this plane was barreling down the runway when that tire burst. you can see the moment it happens on camera along with the aftermath in which part of this aircraft was on fire. >> oh, a blown tire! >> this morning, this frightening incident caught on camera, a tire exploding mid takeoff from tampa. >> emergency, emergency! >> sparks and smoke coming off the american airline plane's wheel, boeing 737 carrying 174 passengers en route to phoenix. >> we had a blown tire and require -- >> steven markovich films a

daily aviation show on youtube, and he happened to be rolling in when the tire blew. >> i thought at first when the smoke came out it looked like the engine had blown. i have filmed tens of thousands of takeoffs and never seen anything like this. >> no injuries were reported. american tells abc news the flight "experienced a mechanical issue. customers safely deplaned and were bussed to the terminal." the incident comes just two days after a united airlines flight lost a wheel during takeoff. flight attendants telling passengers to brace for a bumpy landing. >> brace, brace, brace! >> i don't really think the flying public has anything to worry about. if anything this is showing the tires are doing what they are designed to do. they are designed to take a lot of abuse and even lose air pressure and even catch fire if necessary. >> in that same line of thought with design, sources tell us that small fire that was burning in the wheel well of this american airlines plane on the runway, that was actually burning by design. it was meant to prevent a larger explosion.

the faa, though, is now investigating this incident. george? >> okay, trevor, thanks. we turn now to the federal trade commission planning to sue pharmacy benefit managers over insulin and other drug prices. rhiannon ally with the story. >> this lawsuit is expected to target those so-called middlemen that push patients to more expensive insulin. lawmakers and federal regulators accuse drugmakers of inflating the price of the drug. "politico" reports the unitedhealth group, cvs, and cigna are all expected to face lawsuits. now, they represent about 80% of prescriptions here in the u.s. the ftc slamming the companies in a scathing report this week. this is the ftc's most aggressive action on drug companies, which is a big turnaround from past policies that have been pretty hands-off. the white house has made lowering insulin prices a main focus. congress already capped insulin prices for medicare patients at $35. the ftc lawsuit could be filed

later this month. rebecca? >> rhiannon, thank you. a lot of people are dependent on those shots. we turn now to an economic reality check, and the latest inflation report as wall street soars to new records. plus, what costco is now doing, citing high inflation. elizabeth schulze is here to break it all down. good morning, elizabeth. >> good morning, rebecca. this inflation report is critical for the federal reserve as it hints it's getting closer to cutting interest rates, which would make it cheaper to pay off credit card debt or take out a new mortgage. consumer prices increased by a better-than-expected 3.1% in june compared to a year ago. that is still above the fed's 2% target but it's a big improvement from the 9% peak we saw back in june 2022. in dollar amounts, american households are now spending $212 more every month than they were last year, and $470 more versus two years ago. importantly, american incomes on average are outpacing inflation. that is helping to absorb at least some of those higher costs. when you look at where prices are still going up, it is in

rent, restaurants, and especially this month services like car insurance, and in a much welcome relief, the cost of groceries and new cars and airfare have been leveling off the speed limit is starting to sound more optimistic about this cooling inflation. most analysts now expect it will start to lower interest rates in september. that's also giving a boost to the stock market. the s&p 500, reflected in most retirement accounts, hit a new record, up 18%. >> meantime, we have heard about these price wars. costco is doing the opposite, with increasing the price of membership. >> it is. this is a change that's going to affect about 52 million people who have those costco memberships. the popular wholesale retailer is now hiking its annual fees. this is the first time it's done this since 2017. so, starting in september, an individual gold star or business membership in the u.s. or canada is going to cost you $5 more per year at $65. the price of an executive membership will go up $10 to $130. costco has really been reluctant to make these memberships more expensive, citing high

inflation, but these fees are a key slice of the retailer's profits. they say they help keep prices low for shoppers at their 882 warehouses, and their rival, sam's club, increased fees back in 2022 to $50 a year for a basic plan. we have already seen costco follow in the footsteps of streaming services like netflix that cracked down on shoppers sharing their membership cards, so storis will now check your photo i.d. at self checkout, but in case any of you are worried, costco so far is not upping the price of the signature hot dog and soda combo. it has stayed at exactly $1.50 since 1985, rebecca. >> thank goodness for that, elizabeth. thank you. >> a little give and get. give more in fees, get those low prices. thank you for that, elizabeth. now the push for nationwide paid leave. erielle reshef is here, but what families need to know about the petition on washington's doorstep with more than 55,000 signatures.

erielle, good morning. this is a big push right now. one a lot of lot of families really want to see happen here. a new push to force companies to provide paid leave to all employees is now well underway. advocacy groups moms rising, paid leave for all, and "glamour" magazine presenting a petition containing, like you said, 55,000 signatures. this would allow workers across the country to get paid time off to care for family or for medical reasons. organizers say the united states is one of only seven countries in the world that does not guarantee any form of paid leave on a federal level. recent data shows that only 27% of private-sector workers have access to paid family leave through their employer, and only 43% had short-term disability insurance. so this affects so many families. >> what's the biggest hangup getting this through congress? >> these businesses say that, if they have to add these benefits to the roster of things they're paying for, the costs will go up, their prices will go up, and

okay, all of that is agreed. now the question is, what is alec baldwin or, more broadly, an actor's responsibility when it comes to ensuring that a weapon on the set is safe? that is the area where they disagree. so it's almost like a battle of the experts here, as to what they disagree on, as opposed to the majority of the facts here, which they agree on. >> you know, the defense team seemed to be backing away from something that alec told george, that he didn't pull the trigger. so they are backing away from that, and they are trying to say, if he pulls the trigger on a movie set, that is not illegal. nothing wrong. that argument -- are you surprised by that? >> no, because it is exactly this point about the obligation of the actor. why add another burden to their case, from the defense perspective? why allow the prosecution to be able to say, "we can show he pulled the trigger?" the defense's perspective is, okay, let's assume you can show that he pulled the trigger.

that shouldn't determine what the outcome of this case ought to be, and that's why a number of people think that he shouldn't have done that interview with george, because he made that comment which has now come back to haunt him. >> if you pull it on a movie set -- >> exactly. it is not his legal or particularly criminal responsibility for something like that. >> baldwin's lawyers are restricted here, though. they can't cite the prosecution arguments in the hannah gutierrez trial. how big of a blow is that? >> well, remember, they argued something slightly different. right? in that case, they are trying to show she is largely responsible. it is her fault. and, yes, alec baldwin was a problem, too. now they're doing the opposite, which is to say it was his fault but she was a problem, too. >> one final question -- why shouldn't the fact that he was told there was no live rounds in the gun end the conversation? >> because the prosecutors would argue that doesn't alleviate him of his legal responsibility to check the weapon for safety.

matthew mcconaughey who is all right times three, if you know what i mean. a bee sting left his eye swollen shut. it looks painful, rhiannon. back at what to do if you get stung this summer. >> it does look painful, doesn't it? he's one of the most recognizable faces in hollywood, but this morning he's looking dazed and confused after being stung by a bee. the oscar-winning actor posting to instagram, apparently blaming a bee sting for his swollen eye. despite the injury, the 54-year-old looked to be in good spirits, showing off that big grin we all know and love. bee stings are of course common, but they can also be serious. what do you do if you or your loved one gets stung? the cdc recommends removing the stinger quickly. they say don't use tweezers or squeeze it out. use a credit card or sticky tape instead. watch for allergic reactions like hives, trouble breathing or swallowing. clean the area and avoid scratching it. if you are allergic, of course carry an epipen with you, and

day of the quijanos' life, but in that moment, frantic wedding guests went from witnessing the "i dos" to dowsing flames. the couple with a cautionary tale about popular floating candles and the hazard that comes with them. for lupe and their wedding day was pure marital bliss, until lupe's wedding dress suddenly catches fire. in this now viral video, you can see the feet-long flames erupting at the aisle, as guests rushed to the bride and groom. >> i didn't know anything that was going on until we stopped kissing and i looked up and saw two of my friends running towards me. i turned back to look and see what was going on, and that's when i noticed my veil and my dress had caught fire. >> at a closer look, the small fire begins at the bottom of lupe's dress and veil before slowly spreading. >> it was a beautiful moment, but i started to notice there was a little too much chaos going on. i heard a scream that didn't sound like a cheer, it sounded like panic.

the world to see it. it came out today on amazon prime video. >> tell us about the movie. >> wow, it's an emotional roller coaster. i play dallas, and ava is played by the lovely meagan good, who's like a sister to me. we are a divorced couple going through it, and it's pretty intense, i'll tell you that. like i say, it's an art-meets-life type of situation. it's a real movie, it's authentic, it is raw, and everyone left their passion and everything to the camera. i'm excited for everyone to see it. they're watching it now. like, "i saw it twice already!" i'm like, how? it came out at 3:00 in the morning! you ain't got no job? [laughter] y'all don't work? >> [laughs] >> i love it. i love the people, listen. >> we had tyler here on monday, and he said your character, dallas, was one of the hardest challenges and you left it all out there. you put it all on camera. why was this role so memorable for you? >> for me, i would say, because i've been in the business for 30 years, and i've been taking the

stairs my whole career. you know, i'm from chicago, humble beginnings. but i've been a worker my whole life. i was prepared for the moment and i gave everything i have. the trials of life, the tragedies, just everything, i put it all there and i left it there. to get a call from tyler perry one morning, my sister meagan good told him i'm a great actor and you should hire us cory hardrict. he called me and was like, "cory, it's tyler perry." [laughter] i'm like, wait, he's calling me? my voice was a little groggy. and then he said he is a fan of mine, and i said, that's a dream come true for mr. perry to say he's a fan. >> go ahead, george. >> did working with him live up to the dream? >> wow, yes. it lived up to the dream. like i say, i love tyler perry. he is such a great human being for everybody. his environment is real angelic. everyone loves him. they love being there. that puts you in a good place

where you can give great work, and i did my best work. so shout out to tp, tyler perry. yes, that's my man right there. >> who was your first call to after the tyler perry call? >> wow. i don't remember. i think i went back to sleep and i was just like -- [laughter] because, when he called me -- yes, i went back to sleep thinking i was in a dream, and it felt surreal. just for him to call me. then i read the script, and i was like, okay, i've got to do this movie. >> we've got to take a look at a clip now. let's take a look. >> jim, i can't do it, man. nope. i made some decisions in my life. i want a divorce. we don't have no kids, so this should be easy, okay? you can keep the house, because your parents gave us a down payment, and i don't want to hear their [bleep] mouths, okay? i'm not paying any alimony, i've got a lawyer to look over papers already. get somebody to get down there and look at it and sign them papers, ava. >> intense! >> listen, the whole movie is like that, mike.
