at least it did. the company once known as twitter and its plans to leave its san francisco home. look, i wouldn't have picked vice president trump to be vice president under the microscope. president biden goes unscripted for the first time in months. but did it help his campaign or hurt it again? the cooldown countdown. we're closing in on a sorely needed stretch of cooler weather. we're tracking when and for how long. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> we begin with this tight knit community in alameda, coming together in mourning over an almost unthinkable tragedy. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. a family wiped out, police say, by someone who was supposed to protect them. tonight. alameda police are still investigating the circumstances of a shooting inside this home on kitty hawk road. a father is accused of shooting and killing four of his

family members, including his wife and six year old son. the one year old son is in critical condition. abc seven news reporter tim johns is following the aftermath. tonight >> as the sun set over the beaches of alameda thursday night, over a dozen friends and neighbors came out to remember just 24 hours earlier. police say a father shot and killed four of his family members, including his in-laws, his wife and his six year old son. his other child, a one year old, was also shot and remains in critical condition. one man, who identified himself as coach ray, came out to the beach thursday evening. ray says he lives nearby and thought the gunshots he heard were fireworks. >> i heard it, it was just it was like 930, 10:00. and then when i got home, i didn't pay any attention to it. and when i got home is when everything started going past us throughout the day on thursday, many came from around alameda to visit the house, some stopping to pray, others leaving flowers or gifts. >> coach ray, who was involved with little league baseball on

the island, tells us he left a baseball bat and game ball for the six year old. >> i gave him a game ball because you every kid gets a game ball, you try as hard as you can to find a way for every kid to get a game ball, and he's never going to get that. >> mike divine organized. thursday's vigil. he says news of the shooting has sent shock waves through this normally quiet and tight knit community. yeah, i think people think of alameda as a safe community, >> we have the same risks that of this kind of thing that any other community in america has. >> that sense of shock also evident in the city's police department. earlier in the day, the alameda police chief holding a news conference. >> our officers are there. they're professionals, but they're also human beings. and so they are they are doing their best that they can, but they're going to stay focused on on making sure that this family receives the justice that they deserve, justice for the family, and also a community in mournin. >> i have two kids, and it's i would never in my life ever no

said, no, i'm sorry. zelensky. >> our national poll shows even after that disastrous debate, the president remains locked in a dead heat with trump 46 to 47. but now more than a dozen democrats in congress are publicly calling for president biden to step aside from his reelection bid. and when abc news washington back here at home, a vacaville motorcycle police officer is dead after he was hit by a passing car while making a traffic stop, it happened this morning. >> investigators say the driver who struck the officer tried to run from the scene, but bystanders stopped her. she was then arrested by the chp, which says she was under the influence of drugs. it is not clear if anyone else was hurt in the crash, but at least two other vehicles were involved. vacaville police identified the officer as matthew bowen. he had been with the force since june of last year and previously worked for the concord police department. flags at the state capitol will be flown at half staff there, dangerous and

disruptive, and tonight police around the bay area are working together to get a handle on sideshows. so far, no one has found the key to deal with them fairly and effectively. so now local agencies are teaming up. tonight we went looking to find those solutions, and abc seven news reporter lauren martinez found a few groups hoping their ideas can help build a better bay area reporter. >> this week, a new effort to tackle the bay area wide proble. the san jose police department hosted the first of what will be a series of meetings on sideshows on wednesday evening. nearly 20 different local and regional law enforcement agencies convened at the department. they make up what's called the bay area working group on sideshows. >> we need to get smarter and coordinate and collaborate. >> mayor matt mehan spoke at the event and said it was about sharing information, something that i became aware of. >> the extent to which these sideshows are connected to

larger rings and organizations of people who are engaged in many different types of crime. >> in june, san jose police arrested seven individuals connected to a sideshow. six of them did not live within the city. mehan said sideshows are at a scale that is concerning, mehan said. if agencies work together, they will be able to respond faster and better. >> i think the hope here is that we establish stronger working relationships where there's trust. people know one another, they know they know who to go to. they can pick up the phone and can quickly share information or ask each other for advice, or maybe for real time backup. >> one idea on how to control sideshows is having sanctioned areas or a safe space. a san mateo county supervisor is suggesting this plan. >> in the 80s, we criminalized skateboarding. now we have skate parks supervisor david canepa points to areas like stockton or sacramento county, where

sideshows are allowed under certain conditions. it's done through the sheriff's office. it's a permitting process. why not give people the ability to do such? >> he's urging a region wide approach by law enforcement and county officials. >> we need as policymakers to be innovative. we need to be thinking about what the solutions are, buzz. because remember, the problem is only grown bigger over the last five years. >> in the south bay. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> governor newsom is looking to increase public safety in oakland by expanding the number of chp patrols. it was just about a year ago when the chp was deployed to crack down on crime. the governor calls that move a success and today announced plans to build on it. newsom added. some of the people arrested could be prosecuted by the state instead of alameda county. >> we're going to move the california highway patrol from 42 shifts that they're currently

operating in oakland. we're going to increase that fourfold. we're going to have 162 shifts starting next week. we're going to focus over the course of the next four months. >> however, not everyone is on board with newsom's plan. some people think there is a better way to fight crime. >> we want our youths to stop, engaging in these acts. we have to give them resources and something to do and some guidance. right. there are programs that are proven that do those things. we're just underinvested in them. >> so far, the increased patrols have resulted in more than 500 arrests and the recovery of nearly 1200 stolen vehicles. now you can see some of those crime statistics for yourself on the abc seven neighborhood safety tracker. it includes information and trends for oakland, san francisco and san jose. you can find it on our web page. just go to abc7 news.com. all right. time to jump outside with this live look from our golden gate bridge camera. finally, we are seeing the light at the end of a

very long and hot tunnel. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is taking a look at what we can expect in the next few hours. sandhya. >> yeah, dan, you're going to be enjoying an easing of this heat wave all right, so let's talk about how hot today it was. a blistering 111 at the livermore co-op site, tying its record of 111 set back in 1961. none of the other official reporting sites actually set records, but it was hot 109 at the livermore airport, 108 concord 111, in fairfield. you really had to get to half moon bay to get away from the heat. 99 in san jose, 9101 in santa rosa. still holding on to some of the heat inland in the 70s and the 80s. right now, inland areas, excessive heat warnings are still going heat advisories for most other locations other than the coast and the city, until 8 p.m. tomorrow, but solano county until 9 p.m. saturday. increased risk of heat illnesses is still there because when you look at

these temperatures, even though the heat is backing off, you're still going to get up to 104 in antioch and livermore, 102 in concord. i'll be back with a full look at what you can expect for the weekend. and dan, i think you're going to like what you see. >> i like what i hear good. thanks, sandy. see you in a bit. elon musk is about to sublease the entire x building formerly known as twitter hq. according to the chronicle, real estate firm jll was hired to market the entire 800,000 square foot complex at ninth and market streets. the new listing hasn't hit the market just yet. it seems to be in line with many of musk's cost saving efforts at x, the company's future plans in san francisco are unknown, but that may not augur very well for them. all right, coming up here, the espys deliver the emotion. the best moment you might have missed, including that honor for prince harry. plus pfizer's new pill. its next innovation claims to change the game in weight loss revolution. and welcome to

seven. in a year that saw a meteoric rise for women's sport, particularly basketball. it was fitting the south carolina women's basketball team was named the team of the year. reporter curt sandoval, with our sister station in los angeles with a look at some of the other winners. >> 23 time grand slam champion serena williams, who knows a thing or two about winning espys. she has a dozen in her trophy case. well, tonight here in hollywood, she was serving up jokes as a first year host of the espys. it's been a great couple of years of sports and women's sports. >> y'all finally realize that women's sports are way more exciting. >> serena joked, and she sang. i assume the owes a lot to mgm. it

of sussex, prince harry, was awarded the pat tillman award for service. >> i stand here not as prince harry pat tillman award recipient, but rather a voice on behalf of the invictus games foundation and the thousands of veterans and service personnel from over 20 nations who have made the invictus games a reality. >> plenty of great winners tonight and you can make the case. there were no losers because 100% of the profits go to the jimmy v foundation for cancer research in hollywood. i'm curt sandoval. >> and prince harry receiving that pat tillman award for service was not without some controversy. tillman, a bay area native, gave up his nfl career to join the military soon after nine over 11, only to be killed in afghanistan. prince harry acknowledged tillman's mother tonight, though she had said there may be more fitting recipients for the award. >> her advocacy for pat's legacy is deeply personal and one that

i respect. the bond between a mother and son is eternal and transcends even the greatest losses. >> harry, himself a veteran, won the award for creating the invictus games, a paralympic style sporting event for service members and veterans. tonight's audience included tillman's widow and prince harry's wife, meghan markle. all right, an update now on a story we brought you last night here at 11. the san francisco police department says it went through surveillance video and found no sign that an australian ceo was attacked on the 4th of july. it adds colin bettles was in possession of his property at the san francisco general hospital. initially, it was reported his wallet and cell phone were missing. so the mystery in about exactly what happened continues. pfizer tonight has announced plans to move forward on a once a day weight loss pill could be a big advancement considering the current most popular. similar medications are only available as injections. pfizer has already been testing a

formulation for its new pill to treat obesity. it had earlier discontinued a twice daily version of that drug. the company now says data on the once a day version is actually fairly encouraging. development will continue for the remainder of this year before starting larger scale clinical trials. after that. new at 11. we want to take you outside with this live look at part of the bay. you might see some new ferry boats crossing with some creative names. bay area students put in their submissions and the public has voted. here's what they came up with for the new additions to the city's ferry fleet. there's carl, named after the fog of course. and then there's zalophus, which is the scientific name for sea lion. pretty good names, pretty good looking boats. all right, time now to get a check on the weather. meteorologist sandhya patel is back with sandhya. some easing heat. >> yes, and by the weekend, it's going to be a lot cooler. and you're going to like it. dan, since it has been just really so hot for so long in our inland

communities. let's talk about the sunset tonight. 832 the sun was going down and it was just gorgeous from our tower cameras, but that extra color thanks to the haze. we also had some smoke in the upper parts of the atmosphere, and you could see it from mount tam. obviously it didn't make it down to the surface, but air quality has been in the moderate range. some spots earlier were poor. here's a look at the smoke forecast. and these fires that are burning to our south with a southerly wind will continue to see some smoke aloft. we had some this morning. you're going to see it again tomorrow morning. and then it becomes a little more diffuse as it continues to move up. so how come the smoke is coming up? because there's this area of high pressure and the wind is flowing around that clockwise. that's the same high that brought us the heat today. it will bring in one more day of this hot weather tomorrow with this heat wave. so the heat risk will be moderate to major in our inland communities. here's what you might want to look forward to. the temperatures this weekend as we look at your preview coming down. not so hot.

partly cloudy saturday, low 60s to mid 90s. sunday will be breezy and cooler weather with low 60s to low 90s. it's almost 90 degrees in brentwood right now. that's way too warm. obviously 60 degrees along the coastline. 50s and 60s. as we take a look at a live picture from our east bay hills. camera, a lovely view tomorrow. last day of triple digits. weekend forecast cooling trend for all areas. and early next week it's back to average temperatures. so let's take a look at tomorrow's temperatures in the morning. it's going to start out clear inland in the 70s quickly jumping to the 90s by noon and triple digits by 5 p.m. around the bay. mainly sunny 63 and then eventually 70 to 80s around the coastline. there will be fog around. we already have it in half moon bay, 50s to the 60s. first thing tomorrow morning. temperatures in the 50s coast side, but 60s and 70s inland. so it's going to start off pretty warm inland tomorrow afternoon in the south bay. 100in morgan hill, 94, in san jose. well above average on the peninsula.
