morning, good friday morning everyone. >> i'm danny new in for andrew and i'm alison kosik in for rhiannon. >> and we begin with reaction to president biden's high stakes news conference last night. yeah. >> today, he heads back out onto the campaign trail with a rally in detroit hours after more congressional democrats came forward publicly calling on him to drop out of the race. >> abc's christiane cordero is here with the latest. christiane, good morning alison. >> good morning. the news conference was biden's biggest test since the debate. and even many of his supporters are saying it's not clear he passed it last night. president biden doubled down on his decision to stay in the presidential race. >> i'm not in this for my legac. i'm in this to complete the job. i started marking the end of the nato summit. >> he made two notable gaffes early on. first, he mistakenly referred to ukrainian president zelensky as president putin. >> ladies and gentlemen, president putin, president puti, we've got to beat president putin, president zelensky, i'm

so focused on beating putin, we've got to worry about it. >> then, during his first news conference in eight months, biden referred to vice president kamala harris as vice president trump. >> look, i wouldn't have picked vice president trump to be vice president. did i think she was not qualified to be president? so let's start there. >> trump weighed in live with a post on social media. the caption reading great job. >> joe referred to vice president harris as vice president trump, right now, donald trump is using that to mock your age and your memory. how do you combat that criticism from deniers? >> listen to him. >> supporters described biden's comments as a forceful defense of his foreign and domestic policies, fielding questions from reporters for nearly one hour about the war in ukraine, china and gun violence. >> more children are killed by a bullet than any other cause of death. the united states of america, what the hell are we

doing? >> i thought biden's performance tonight was solid. yes, there was one gaffe and there was a gaffe earlier today. i don't think it's been a secret for 40 years that he is gaffe prone. >> minutes after his news conference, two more house democrats called on biden to end his candidacy, including congressman eric sorensen of illinois and connecticut congressman jim himes, the top democrat on the house intelligence committee. at least 17 house democrats have now publicly called on biden to step aside. >> i think he at least opened the door to if people are showing him that he can't win, and if they make a convincing case that they don't think he can, i think he will do what's good for the country if he thinks that's the case. >> biden and his team insist he has the stamina and mental acuity for another four years as president, dismissing last month's debate as a bad night, the president says he will take a neurological exam if his doctors recommend it. but. >> but what? i'm good. i'm tested every single day about my

neurological capacity. the decisions i make every day. >> our new poll shows biden still neck and neck with trump 46 to 47. but the poll also found 85% think biden is too old for a second term, 67% want him to step aside. abc's washington bureau chief and political director rick klein says after last night's news conference he sees cracks in biden's strategy. >> he talked a little bit about how he has to pace himself at this moment. he talked about how his staff is overscheduling him kind of shifting things a little bit to suggest that if he is shown polling numbers or data that suggests that he can't win, that he might reconsider. there's some little cracks in all of that that i think are potentially, potentially quite significant, even more than the gaffes and the mistakes that he made. >> today, president biden hopes to turn the page traveling to michigan, his fourth trip to the battleground state this year. allison. >> okay, christiane, thanks very much. it's day five of the power crisis in southeast texas, days

without electricity in the summer heat and for many, there's no immediate relief in sight. new misery for texans in the aftermath of hurricane beryl. >> just trying to keep our food from being spoiled. >> it's frustrating. it's very frustrating. overnight, more than 1 million customers still in the dark, five days after the storm crippled houston's power grid. >> and now officials are warning nearly half a million homes and businesses could still be in the dark well into next week. >> how in the world can it take almost a week and then you're talking until saturday, maybe sunday, maybe next week? how is that possible? >> food and water distribution centers in the city, jam packed some lines three hours long, while hospitals face overcrowding, forcing officials to convert part of the houston texans football facilities into a medical transition space. the heat bringing some people to their boiling point. a man in

fort bend county is accused of pulling a pellet gun on a power company employee, assessing the area. houston's main utility company, centerpoint, defends its response to the outages, claiming it's restored power faster than what other cities have seen in the last ten named storms. but the lieutenant governor is demanding an investigation if centerpoint meets their goals by sunday, they will have reduced it from about 2.2 million people without power, down to still about 500,000 for next week. >> folks, that is not acceptable. >> excessive heat is in the forecast there through next week. >> well, overseas the pentagon says it will now shut down that pier at built in gaza to deliver humanitarian aid. the $200 million pier has been plagued by rough seas and security threats, and it was only operational for 23 days. the us has also reportedly foiled a plot by russia to assassinate the head of a german company making

weapons for ukraine. germany was able to protect the ceo after getting a heads up, and it's believed to be part of a series of russian plots against european executives. >> this morning, two eye opening cases of violence on the streets, one case deadly and the other a father of three, risking his life to save a complete stranger. here's abc's derrick dennis this morning. >> a new warning about street violence in america. after two dramatic incidents in different cities. >> it's really awful situation. you know that people can just go around and jump people and fire off weapons and pretty much not feel like they're ever going to get in trouble, rideshare driver paul bassett says he was waiting for a passenger in chicago when he saw a man getting robbed. >> surveillance video shows the victim trying to run away when bassett decides to help. >> so i just pulled my car towards them and honked my horn really loudly, thinking that would help and get them to stop doing what they were doing. and

one of them just shot me right through the window of my car. >> the father of three was shot in the chest, but was able to drive away and call 911. meanwhile, in north carolina, two teens are under arrest. accused in a deadly shooting spree around charlotte. i'm in pain, but i don't. >> i try not to feel it. >> police linking the suspects ages 16 and 18 to 5 separate shootings, firing at drivers, bicyclists and groups of people over the course of 30 minutes. at one scene, authorities say a man was shot and killed in his car while driving home from work. we're still asking the same questions. >> why would two juveniles engage in this type of behavior on random victims? >> it comes after a funeral yesterday in durham, north carolina, for a two year old killed in a drive by shooting a new study found more than 17,000 children died from gun violence nationwide in the last decade. but that study also found restrictive gun laws are not having a significant impact on

gun deaths among children. derrick dennis, abc news, new york. >> derek, thank you. overnight, look at this massive fire tearing through an apartment building in philadelphia. authorities say about 50 people are left homeless. but remarkably, everyone got out alive. and the cause is still under investigation. >> drones are keeping an eye above new york city's largest beach after a pair of shark sightings. they led to the partial shutdown of rockaway beach. meantime, in hawaii, a new alert on oahu after the sighting of a shark described as aggressive. >> time now for your friday weather. >> good morning. we're tracking some tropical moisture creeping up the mid-atlantic coast from north carolina into virginia, maryland, delaware, new jersey, eastern pennsylvania, eventually through saturday. this creeps up through southeast new england, and we are facing some flood potential flash flooding. this will also chase some people off of the beaches at times and off

>> okay, now to another day of the alec baldwin manslaughter trial and a key witness being called to the stand this morning. the armorer from the rust movie set is expected to take the stand as alec baldwin's involuntary manslaughter trial enters its third day. mr. problem, do you have a comment you want to hear from hannah gutierrez? prosecutors plan to call hannah gutierrez to testif, to grill her about the shooting that killed cinematographer halyna hutchins. gutierrez is already serving an 18 month sentence for failing to secure the gun today. she is expected to plead the fifth. >> isn't the truth that you were just trying to get this over with so that the prosecutors could focus on alec baldwin, no. >> baldwin's lawyers yesterday accused officials of rushing their investigation, the defense focusing on the search of a warehouse that supplied ammunition to the film while also storing live rounds. and at the same time, and when left that search, you are not as you sit here. >> sure you got every live round, are you know, baldwin's lawyer is pressing a crime scene technician about why that searc,

more than a month after the shooting, failed to produce any surveillance video. you didn't take the surveillance footage, even though that footage could have shown when people came and left the prop house. correct. >> i don't recall if there was surveillance footage. >> tell the members of the jury what you did to search for surveillance videos that satisfied you, that you had complied with the warrants. order. >> tell the jury i don't recall looking for surveillance footage. >> prosecutors say the warehouse owner is not suspected of any wrongdoing. no word yet on the question that you may be wondering which is if baldwin plans to testify. the trial is expected to last through next week. >> changes are coming to dollar general. the company will pay $12 million in fines and will upgrade safety protocols after reaching a deal with the labor department. a recent study found more than 200 people were killed or injured at its stores over a ten year period, including during robberies. >> coming up, the new lawsuit over what they call the one chip
