we had numbers up towards 108 yesterday, but today with the hot weather inland, we are going to see things shift a little bit. there's a system to the south here. you notice some of the moisture. well, we're going to see a few more clouds. and the high pressure ridge is going to move out of town. and that's going to allow for just the grip to loosen a little bit. 64 in fremont, 57 and sfo. and we're looking at mid 50s in novato. so the fog is at the coast. it's at half moon bay, two mile visibility. and we are warm from last night. anywhere from 2 to 4 degrees milder at this hour. so the forecast for the next several hours 9:00 we're warm in the 90s, near 100 at noontime. we should top out about 104 in brentwood, maybe 102 around antioch. and looking at temperatures just approaching the upper 70s around the bay shore. so that's certainly a cool down. we'll get into about a 10 degrees cool down inland to start the weekend. good morning amanda. >> good morning lisa. our overall map the color showing

really friday light as we like to call it. you can see that typical slowdown on the altamont pass. there was an earlier sig alert in san francisco, southbound 101, that cleared at about 430 this morning, but there was a big diesel truck that spilled some or big truck that spilled some diesel, i should say southbound 101 south of cesar chavez. but we do want to get to palo alto because there is an issue. northbound 101 after embarcadero, the two left lanes are closed due to a solo crash. that backup is to the oregon expressway, and it's still causing some slow traffic. so keep that in mind if you're traveling along the peninsula. let's get back to the desk. >> thanks, amanda. happening today. the man accused of shooting five members of his own family, including his two young sons, is due in court. four people died as a result of the shooting. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez has been following this story. she is live for us in alameda and gloria, the youngest victim, just one years old, remains in the hospital. >> yes, it's just so tragic.

reggie and we are working to get an update on the young boy's condition. but behind me you can see that neighbors have set up this vigil here. there are candles out. there are flowers in memory of this young family. this has touched so many people here in this neighborhood, this tragedy. and last night, over a dozen friends and neighbors gathered for a vigil to remember them. police say a father shot and killed four of his family members, including his in-laws, his wife and his six year old son and his other child. a one year old was also shot and remains in critical condition. coach ray is involved with little league baseball on the island and went to the vigil. he tells us that he left a baseball bat and a game ball for the six year old. >> i gave him a game ball because you every kid gets a game ball. you try as hard as you can to find a way for every kid to get a game ball, and he's never going to get that. >> and the suspect was arrested

and is expected in court today. and of course, we'll continue following this story for you throughout the morning. live in alameda. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you. gloria, if you're in the east bay, you're about to see a flood of chp officers in oakland. a year after deploying the highway patrol to help crack down on crime. yesterday, the governor announced he is quadrupling the number of patrols. at least 20 chp officers will now be in oakland seven days a week. >> we're going to move the california highway patrol from 42 shifts that they're currently operating in oakland. we're going to increase that fourfold. we're going to have 162 shifts starting next week. we're going to focus over the course of the next four months. >> the governor calls the past year a big success. not everyone agrees the anti-terror project believes there are better ways to deter crimes, including investment in crime prevention programs. >> we want our youths to stop, engaging in these acts. we have to give them resources and something to do and some guidance. right. there are

programs that are proven that do those things. we're just underinvested in them. >> the governor's office says that the increased patrols have led to more than 500 arrests and the recovery of nearly 1200 stolen vehicles. >> oakland mayor shengtao is responding to recent questions about oakland's reported crime drop. the police department says overall crime is down 33. but according to the san francisco chronicle, that number was based on incomplete statistics from last year, and the actual drop may be closer to 20. >> there has been no change in how the oakland police department has reported our weekly crime data since they began sharing it with the community in 2011. so this is opd's process in regards to being transparent. other cities, they actually are not this transparent. >> mayor tao went on to say, there are discrepancies if crimes are miscategorized when they're reported. she claims there's typically about a three month lag between a report being filed and that data being reflected in the statistics. now, during her remarks

yesterday, tao also commented on the fbi raid of her home and three other locations in oakland. when asked if there was any wrongdoing. this was the mayor's response. >> i am not the subject of this investigation. i have done nothing wrong and i expect that there will be an opportunity to say more. but now, isn't the time and that i am fully cooperating with the investigation and look forward to the opportunity to vindicate myself. >> mayor tao maintains she is focused on doing her job and handling issues impacting the community. >> your voice, your vote. today, president biden goes back on the offensive as he continues to try and save his campaign. he's heading to michigan for a rally. it comes as more democrats are calling on him to step aside following his news conference last night. he made some notable gaffes, raising more concerns about his ability to win in november. abc news reporter christiane cordero is live in dc with how some are reacting this morning. hi, christiane. >> hey there reggie. good morning. so it's a conversation that's happening both publicly and behind closed doors. abc

say that he has his cell phone. he has his wallet, even though initially it was reported that he didn't, it still isn't clear exactly what happened to bettles before he was found unconscious on market street. >> this morning. >> we're learning a bit more about an apparent misunderstanding between the governor's office and the alameda county district attorney's office. governor newsom addressed the situation yesterday during a news conference where he was announcing increased chp patrols in the east bay to help crack down on crime. well, the misunderstanding stems from an offer the governor made earlier this year. he said he would dispatch attorneys from the state to help alameda county da pamela price prosecute drug crimes this week. the offer was rescinded. the governor's office says price's office has not been cooperating. >> i can only observe what i've observed. we extended a hand of partnership. unfortunately, it wasn't reciprocated. >> now, price had her own news coverage yesterday. she says she never turned down the opportunity and claims her

office was in the process of making it happen. >> there's no reason why we wouldn't jump at that. and the question was why we wouldn't jump at that opportunity. it's a process we have to prepare the mou, which i have, is, i believe it's a lengthy document. it's very intensive. and it was under review. >> price says several meetings were held over the past few months to discuss the offer. >> an update from the abc7 news i-team on an international story we've covered for five years. attorneys for a bay area man convicted in the death of a plainclothes police officer in rome are now asking a judge if he can serve the remainder of his sentence on home detention. last week, an italian appeals court reduced the sentences of finnegan elder and gabriel natale. your. the court also reduced natale hjorth's conviction to what amounts to negligence. his attorneys are arguing that since he's no longer convicted of a violent crime, he should be allowed home confinement. he's been in prison

having to be brought forward in court. so the government is very concerned about making sure that chain of custody is kept intact with integrity. >> peterson was convicted of killing his wife, laci, and their unborn son, and sentenced to death. that sentence was later overturned. he's now serving life in prison without the possibility of parole. >> if you live in west oakland, you could be eligible to receive a debit card to be used for transit fares. a man is at the live desk to explain how it works and kumasi up to 1000 low income west oakland residents and workers will get the debit cards. >> it's part of a universal basic mobility pilot program. the city says. to be eligible, you must live or work in west oakland and earn less than the area median income of $103,000 a year. an eight person household can make up to $192,000 a year. to be eligible, the cards are loaded with $160. the money can be put on a clipper card to pay

for a ride on bart ac transit, amtrak scooters and other forms of public transportation. once you use up the $160, you can get an additional 160 by taking a second survey. now, the next opportunity to sign up for the debit cards is next sunday. that's july 21st at the west oakland farmers market. the west oakland transit improvements grant is funding the $400,000 project. back to you at the desk. kumasi >> thanks, amanda. minimum wage for fast food workers in california went up to $20 per hour in april. experts say it's still too early to know the long term effects. some business owners say the increased cost is hurting their bottom line. one franchise owner in los angeles says he had to raise his prices by 10, and since then he's been seeing fewer customers coming to his business. >> we do care for our employees. we know that they are the core and the foundation of our company. and when it when it comes to having to pay them

more, i don't mind that, but we have to understand that it has to come from somewhere. and right now the consumer is saying that they can't afford it. and if they can't afford it, then are we going to be staying in business to make up some of that lost revenue? >> the business owner says he's been forced to lay off some of his part time employees. not every business owner is in that situation, though. data from the bureau of labor statistics shows the fast food industry gained 8000 jobs in the first two months after this law went into effect in april, compared with that same time period in 2023. >> in today's gma first look shopping smart in the midst of rising grocery costs. now some families are deciding to team up for lower costs. here's abc news reporter elizabeth schultz in this morning's gma first look. >> it's the newest grocery shopping strategy to save families money. >> i think just ease and convenience at big box stores like costco and sam's club, families are joining forces, splitting up bulk grocery purchases to save on their

some extra cloud cover as we get into more cooling over the weekend. this hazy view shows the air quality is pretty moderate out there all around the bay, and temperatures are quite mild. 64 hayward 68. in san jose, we have fog, half moon bay 55 and a look at the golden gate bridge where we have a few clouds around. but overall no impacts here. 57 in santa rosa, 62 in napa, 71 in livermore. we will be looking at temperatures coming down even inland. it was 109 in livermore, about 104 today. and looking at our weekend forecast, ten degrees of cooling inland, even more so around the bay, extra cloud cover and then into next week we are going to see a steady pattern with temperatures really where they should be for mid-july. so the sea breeze kicks up across the bay, san francisco, oakland, about even san jose. five degrees cooler today, couple degrees cooler up in the north bay. here's a look in particular at san jose mid-nineties today, upper 80s for saturday. and then check it out. a pretty nice pattern as we get into the workweek next week.

>> for the first time this year, california, part of california has returned to drought levels. northern parts of the state are dry. siskiyou county reached the moderate drought level, which marks the end of a nine month drought free period. the u.s. drought monitor has shown trends in this direction. three months ago, 97% of the state was at normal levels. last week, nearly 6% of the state moved into abnormally dry. within days, we saw a sizable jump amid summer heat waves. now, about 19% of the state is in dry conditions, with nearly 1% in drought. >> in san luis obispo county. if you're planning to visit the iconic hearst castle soon, you may be in for a surprise. workers are adapting to protect the castle from the heat we've been experiencing. extra precautions are being taken to protect the iconic hearst castl. as i just said during the heat, that means they're altering some tours. they've installed misters around the property, and they've put up umbrellas to shade areas outside. inside, officials say it's a real balancing act.

historic items can be damaged by the heat and also be. and there also can be too much moisture from the misters they set humidifiers, dehumidifiers. >> they position fans, and they keep the air circulating in the houses. if they did get wet that they could attract dirt, moisture and that could attract pests. so that's why it's so essential to control humidity. >> hearst castle gets about 3000 visitors every day, with tours running every ten minutes. >> a new tool is helping rescue crews in las vegas. cool people down during record breaking heat. it's called a polar pod, and it's a bag first responders can use to drop a patient's core body temperature in a controlled manner. in cases of heat related illness. the system uses ice and flowing water to cool the body while still allowing access to the arms and head. >> it's something that can drastically increase our heat stroke. patients survivability. it's relatively inexpensive. it's easy to use. there's honestly no reason why we

shouldn't be using these things. >> officials say they haven't had to use the pod yet, but they are ready if the need arises. some innovative high school students are working to keep people cool in the heat, too. their invention could help firefighters during the summer months. >> the team from calistoga high school was just awarded a grant from mit for the creation of a smart device, which can keep firefighters cool on the job. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard spoke with the intrepid students and their teacher. >> this is the device that we made for firefighters. >> this is not a silicon valley tech firm. it's a classroom at calistoga high school where these intrepid students are breaking barriers of innovation. >> in addition, we have fire fire resistant material on the outside. >> science and technology students have spent six months developing this device, designed to keep firefighters cool on the job. >> it's portable. it's essentially a backpack. >> this working prototype pumps cool water through tubes to the forehead of a firefighter, and

uses smart technology and led lights to regulate your body's temperature. >> these leds will go off once your human body or ambient temperature has reached a certain threshold. >> how does it feel? >> it feels good, the cool pack is definitely cool on the forehead. >> the idea born from years of watching devastating wildfires in napa county, a chance for students to give back to their community. >> our town would have burnt to the ground if we wouldn't have had the firefighters saving us, you know, and they're out there risking their lives. all right. >> so we're going to invite the calistoga team on down the calistoga high event team recently got the attention of mit, where they won a grant for their invention and assistance from microsoft to patent the device. >> we are patent pending from microsoft, a helping us. >> mit's whole thing is that they want you to invent for helping other people. >> the students now taking their idea a step forward by collaborating with the calistoga

sierra nevada. few clouds for us. more so into saturday. and it links up with another system to the north that will bring us that pronounced cooling trend into the weekend. today it's about another day of excessive heat, triple digits, but five degrees cooler, at least for most of us around the bay. 57 in san francisco is 55, with the fog at the coast, 68 in san jose. and as we look from our exploratorium camera, it is clear. but, you know, the air quality has not been great. moderate out there, 62 napa, 71 in livermore. and here's a look at that cloud cover. just a few extra clouds. and overall sunny today. the fog at the coast. keeping it cool once again. then as we get you into your saturday morning, you'll notice that we've got more clouds. that system on the way to the north. it really won't be affecting us too much, but as i said, it links up with the system to the north and gets us back into that normal flow. that steady onshore flow. today in the south bay 94,

it was 99 yesterday in san jose, 100, though in morgan hill still sweating it out there. los gatos 101. the hills there particularly hot 90 in sunnyvale, temperatures from the 80s to near 90 in redwood city. another warm day and the hazy conditions for sure. but closer to the city and the coast, you're cooler and you've got partly cloudy skies. 72 downtown up in the north bay. still quite warm here. we've got the triple digits from sonoma through calistoga, upper 90s, santa rosa. so the sea breeze and high pressure still hanging on with the sea breeze not as pronounced with the high pressure moving out of town, but slowly. and so therefore we have more 80s, mid 80s san leandro today in the east bay. fremont, another warm day at 90, but still feeling a little bit better than those mid 90s yesterday. 102 in concord, livermore, about 104. it was 109 yesterday, 105 in brentwood. and the accuweather seven day forecast. one more day and the heat starts easing a bit throughout the afternoon. today,

harris lolobo was 14 years old when he died after eating a spicy chip in september of 2023. he was found unresponsive by police and brought to a hospita, where he later died. an autopsy report found that lobo died from ingesting a high amount of the chili pepper extract in the chip. the report also found that

he had an enlarged heart and a congenital heart defect. >> had it not been for the chip, he would have had a normal, healthy life with a normal life expectancy. >> packy, the maker of the chip, responded, saying that the one chip challenge was intended for adults only, with clear labeling that the product was not for children nor with people with underlying health conditions. the company said they have pulled the chip from stores. >> a jetblue passenger has filed a $1.5 million lawsuit claiming she was burned during a turbulent flight from orlando to hartford. according to the complaint, she says a crew member spilled scalding hot water on her while serving tea to the passenger behind her. she says the temperature was, quote, unreasonably hot and that she suffered second and third degree burns. the complaint also mentions ongoing turbulence made in-flight beverage service unsafe. new at six. the airline that got more than twice as many
