we had numbers up towards 108 yesterday, but today with the hot weather inland, we are going to see things shift a little bit. there's a system to the south here. you notice some of the moisture. well, we're going to see a few more clouds. and the high pressure ridge is going to move out of town. and that's going to allow for just the grip to loosen a little bit. 64 in fremont, 57 and sfo. and we're looking at mid 50s in novato. so the fog is at the coast. it's at half moon bay, two mile visibility. and we are warm from last night. anywhere from 2 to 4 degrees milder at this hour. so the forecast for the next several hours 9:00 we're warm in the 90s, near 100 at noontime. we should top out about 104 in brentwood, maybe 102 around antioch. and looking at temperatures just approaching the upper 70s around the bay shore. so that's certainly a cool down. we'll get into about a 10 degrees cool down inland to start the weekend. good morning amanda. >> good morning lisa. our overall map the color showing

really friday light as we like to call it. you can see that typical slowdown on the altamont pass. there was an earlier sig alert in san francisco, southbound 101, that cleared at about 430 this morning, but there was a big diesel truck that spilled some or big truck that spilled some diesel, i should say southbound 101 south of cesar chavez. but we do want to get to palo alto because there is an issue. northbound 101 after embarcadero, the two left lanes are closed due to a solo crash. that backup is to the oregon expressway, and it's still causing some slow traffic. so keep that in mind if you're traveling along the peninsula. let's get back to the desk. >> thanks, amanda. happening today. the man accused of shooting five members of his own family, including his two young sons, is due in court. four people died as a result of the shooting. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez has been following this story. she is live for us in alameda and gloria, the youngest victim, just one years old, remains in the hospital. >> yes, it's just so tragic.

reggie and we are working to get an update on the young boy's condition. but behind me you can see that neighbors have set up this vigil here. there are candles out. there are flowers in memory of this young family. this has touched so many people here in this neighborhood, this tragedy. and last night, over a dozen friends and neighbors gathered for a vigil to remember them. police say a father shot and killed four of his family members, including his in-laws, his wife and his six year old son and his other child. a one year old was also shot and remains in critical condition. coach ray is involved with little league baseball on the island and went to the vigil. he tells us that he left a baseball bat and a game ball for the six year old. >> i gave him a game ball because you every kid gets a game ball. you try as hard as you can to find a way for every kid to get a game ball, and he's never going to get that. >> and the suspect was arrested

and is expected in court today. and of course, we'll continue following this story for you throughout the morning. live in alameda. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you. gloria, if you're in the east bay, you're about to see a flood of chp officers in oakland. a year after deploying the highway patrol to help crack down on crime. yesterday, the governor announced he is quadrupling the number of patrols. at least 20 chp officers will now be in oakland seven days a week. >> we're going to move the california highway patrol from 42 shifts that they're currently operating in oakland. we're going to increase that fourfold. we're going to have 162 shifts starting next week. we're going to focus over the course of the next four months. >> the governor calls the past year a big success. not everyone agrees the anti-terror project believes there are better ways to deter crimes, including investment in crime prevention programs. >> we want our youths to stop, engaging in these acts. we have to give them resources and something to do and some guidance. right. there are

programs that are proven that do those things. we're just underinvested in them. >> the governor's office says that the increased patrols have led to more than 500 arrests and the recovery of nearly 1200 stolen vehicles. >> oakland mayor shengtao is responding to recent questions about oakland's reported crime drop. the police department says overall crime is down 33. but according to the san francisco chronicle, that number was based on incomplete statistics from last year, and the actual drop may be closer to 20. >> there has been no change in how the oakland police department has reported our weekly crime data since they began sharing it with the community in 2011. so this is opd's process in regards to being transparent. other cities, they actually are not this transparent. >> mayor tao went on to say, there are discrepancies if crimes are miscategorized when they're reported. she claims there's typically about a three month lag between a report being filed and that data being reflected in the statistics. now, during her remarks

yesterday, tao also commented on the fbi raid of her home and three other locations in oakland. when asked if there was any wrongdoing. this was the mayor's response. >> i am not the subject of this investigation. i have done nothing wrong and i expect that there will be an opportunity to say more. but now, isn't the time and that i am fully cooperating with the investigation and look forward to the opportunity to vindicate myself. >> mayor tao maintains she is focused on doing her job and handling issues impacting the community. >> your voice, your vote. today, president biden goes back on the offensive as he continues to try and save his campaign. he's heading to michigan for a rally. it comes as more democrats are calling on him to step aside following his news conference last night. he made some notable gaffes, raising more concerns about his ability to win in november. abc news reporter christiane cordero is live in dc with how some are reacting this morning. hi, christiane. >> hey there reggie. good morning. so it's a conversation that's happening both publicly and behind closed doors. abc

news has learned senate democrats privately met with the biden campaign thursday. one senator said they needed to see hard data that showed a path to success. in november, in his first press conference of the year, president joe biden fielded nearly an hour of questions highlighting his policies and political future. >> the best way to assure them is the way i assure myself, and that is, am i getting the job done? >> the president first pressed on whether vice president kamala harris could beat former president trump in november. biden flubbed his response. >> look, i wouldn't have picked vice president trump to be vice president, but i think she was not qualified to be president. so let's start there. number one, trump weighed in live with a post on social media reading. >> great job. joe biden ignored the actual question about how the vp would fare against trump, only stressing that she's qualified to be president and offering praise. >> she was a first rate person, and in the senate, she was really good. i wouldn't have

picked her unless i thought she was qualified to be president. >> yet insisting he is best qualified to win and govern a growing list of congressional democrats are not sold. at least 17 house democrats have now publicly called on biden to step aside since the debate. two weeks ago. two called on the president to end his candidacy minutes after the news conference, eric sorensen of illinois and jim himes of connecticut, the top democrat on the house intelligence committee, himes, saying biden should consider his remarkable legacy in american history. >> i'm not in this for my legac. i'm in this to complete the job. i started. >> but biden did leave the door open to being convinced he should quit if polling shows he can't win our latest poll with the washington post and ipsos shows biden still neck and neck with trump, 46, to 47, but 67% say they want biden to step aside. today, president biden travels to michigan, where he's expected to tie the controversial project 2025 to former president trump,

contrasting that project's agenda with that of a second biden term. kumasi back to you. >> thank you christian. well, today some good news for ferry riders. officials are taking the next step in electrifying vessels. and amanda is live with what's happening today that's bringing the prime minister of new zealand to the area. yeah. >> kumasi the prime minister of new zealand will join state and local officials today to sign a design and supply agreement. it comes after a new zealand electric ferry company called ev maritime agreed to help electrify the angel island. tiburon ferries. the california air resources board awarded a $24 million grant in may to make it happen. the plan also includes expanding the dock for charging equipment and installing solar panels. the state is requiring all short distance ferries to be free of emissions by the end of 2025. also today, a celebration at san francisco's ferry building. it's finally the launch of sea change, the world's first commercial passenger ferry

powered 100% by hydrogen fuel cells in an alameda company, helped build the 70 foot boat. it was first launched in 2021, but its launch into service was delayed because of the pandemic and not yet having approval for its propulsion technologies. lastly, there is a pair of new san francisco bay ferry boats with some creative names. there's carl, of course, named after the famous fog, and the other is zalophus, which is the scientific name for a sea lion. bay area students entered nearly 300 suggested names for the ferries and the public voted. they will join the fleet starting next year. >> all right. good morning to you. friday morning we had 109 in livermore today going for 104. so that would be a 5 degrees drop. and notice there's some moisture moving up from the south, some cloud cover that will be affecting us. you'll see some of the cloud cover, the next this afternoon and then certainly into saturday. it is 63 right now, 68 in san jose. so numbers are

quite mild in the 70s from where they were yesterday afternoon. didn't have enough of that cooling to really make it back into the comfort zone. it is 55 in novato, 57 santa rosa. so our highlights looking at our last day of triple digit heat today, we're going to talk about 103 maybe maximum inland 104. then the cooling trend for the weekend as much as ten degrees cooler inland. and then early next week we are back to average temperatures. so hour by hour we have the fog at the coast. and then notice we'll see a few clouds move up, but otherwise it's sunny and it's a gray at the shoreline. this is your saturday and notice that we do have more cloud cover for a partly to mostly cloudy afternoon. as for today, 80 in oakland, look for 76 in richmond. so back to some comfortable numbers here. 4 to 5 degrees cooler from san francisco to oakland, even san jose in the mid 90s. today so the warm spots concord 102, livermore 104 and santa rosa out of the triple digit range to 98

we are learning the company formerly known as twitter is reportedly trying to sublease the entire san francisco office that it has. amanda, does it mean elon musk is about to move another one of his companies out of the bay that we don't yet know? >> everyone is really being quiet about the future of x and its hundreds of employees in san francisco right now. but here's what we do know. according to the chronicle, real estate firm

jll has been hired to market the entire 800,000 square foot complex. that's, of course, at ninth and market streets. the listing hasn't hit the market yet, but the real estate company is advertising the space as, quote, one large headquarters opportunity x occupies 460,000ft■!s of office space. te listing also includes an attached 330,000 square foot building on 10th street x previously made that available for subleasing. this comes after several hiccups between elon musk and the city over the company's office use. you may remember musk ran into trouble after converting some of the space into bedrooms for employees. he also tried to install a giant illuminated x on the building without the proper permits. the city then took that sign down the company's future plans for the neighborhood and the city are unclear at this moment. the chronicle reached out to x and the companies that own the buildings about the listing, but they did not get a response. back to you. >> thank you amanda. well, you

>> oh, i did not expect that boston celtics jaylen brown won best championship performance, and prince harry received the pat tillman award for service. tillman, a bay area native, gave up his nfl career to join the military soon after nine over 11. he was killed in afghanistan. prince harry acknowledged tillman's mother during his speech. >> her advocacy for pat's legacy is deeply personal and one that i respect. the bond between a mother and son is eternal and transcends even the greatest losses on behalf of the invictus games, harry, himself a veteran, won the award for creating the invictus games, a paralympic style sporting event for service members and veterans steve kerr, steph curry and the rest of team usa in abu dhabi this morning for a few days of practice and exhibition games with australia and serbia, the u.s. beat canada wednesday night in vegas and it was a basketball fan treatment during the game.

the middle of next week. temperatures into the 80s for you. highs today, then in the south bay, still hot. morgan hill in los gatos, about 100 and 101 here, 92 in santa clara, looking at 80s and perhaps 90, maybe about three degrees cooler for you. redwood city could see more cooling there. 82 in san mateo. so numbers with the sea breeze and that ridge heading out of town will be comfortable more in line with average in san francisco, 72. but in the north bay it's going to take another day. still plenty of 90s. not as hot as yesterday, but you got that 100in sonoma. oakland today should see numbers coming down out of the 80s upper 80s in union city. and you head inland will still have that sizzling heat. and our excessive heat warning for 102 in concord, 104 in antioch and livermore. the accuweather seven day forecast. so dangerous heat once again today, especially inland. more clouds and cooler for your saturday. the cooling continues on sunday and we'll see that trend continue with a steady pattern into next week.

the light shines from the roof of the fairmont hotel across the street through the cathedral's famous rose window. the show runs through sunday if you want to see it from the inside. the cathedral is open from sunset to midnight. >> the city of san francisco is looking for artists with a connection to chinatown. mayor, london breed and community leaders announced the launch of a chinatown artist registry. the idea is to get anyone with strong ties to the community to sign up so they can be considered for upcoming publicly funded art projects in the neighborhood. >> we are finally being very intentional about our investments and about our work and how it impacts community. but more importantly, how it is by and for the community. >> interested artists must also submit ideas for projects that will be installed in places like portsmouth square, a key gathering spot for members of the community. the project will be running in conjunction with the san francisco art commission's art commission and the chinese cultural center.

say that he has his cell phone. he has his wallet, even though initially it was reported that he didn't, it still isn't clear exactly what happened to bettles before he was found unconscious on market street. >> this morning. >> we're learning a bit more about an apparent misunderstanding between the governor's office and the alameda county district attorney's office. governor newsom addressed the situation yesterday during a news conference where he was announcing increased chp patrols in the east bay to help crack down on crime. well, the misunderstanding stems from an offer the governor made earlier this year. he said he would dispatch attorneys from the state to help alameda county da pamela price prosecute drug crimes this week. the offer was rescinded. the governor's office says price's office has not been cooperating. >> i can only observe what i've observed. we extended a hand of partnership. unfortunately, it wasn't reciprocated. >> now, price had her own news coverage yesterday. she says she never turned down the opportunity and claims her

office was in the process of making it happen. >> there's no reason why we wouldn't jump at that. and the question was why we wouldn't jump at that opportunity. it's a process we have to prepare the mou, which i have, is, i believe it's a lengthy document. it's very intensive. and it was under review. >> price says several meetings were held over the past few months to discuss the offer. >> an update from the abc7 news i-team on an international story we've covered for five years. attorneys for a bay area man convicted in the death of a plainclothes police officer in rome are now asking a judge if he can serve the remainder of his sentence on home detention. last week, an italian appeals court reduced the sentences of finnegan elder and gabriel natale. your. the court also reduced natale hjorth's conviction to what amounts to negligence. his attorneys are arguing that since he's no longer convicted of a violent crime, he should be allowed home confinement. he's been in prison

some extra cloud cover as we get into more cooling over the weekend. this hazy view shows the air quality is pretty moderate out there all around the bay, and temperatures are quite mild. 64 hayward 68. in san jose, we have fog, half moon bay 55 and a look at the golden gate bridge where we have a few clouds around. but overall no impacts here. 57 in santa rosa, 62 in napa, 71 in livermore. we will be looking at temperatures coming down even inland. it was 109 in livermore, about 104 today. and looking at our weekend forecast, ten degrees of cooling inland, even more so around the bay, extra cloud cover and then into next week we are going to see a steady pattern with temperatures really where they should be for mid-july. so the sea breeze kicks up across the bay, san francisco, oakland, about even san jose. five degrees cooler today, couple degrees cooler up in the north bay. here's a look in particular at san jose mid-nineties today, upper 80s for saturday. and then check it out. a pretty nice pattern as we get into the workweek next week.

>> for the first time this year, california, part of california has returned to drought levels. northern parts of the state are dry. siskiyou county reached the moderate drought level, which marks the end of a nine month drought free period. the u.s. drought monitor has shown trends in this direction. three months ago, 97% of the state was at normal levels. last week, nearly 6% of the state moved into abnormally dry. within days, we saw a sizable jump amid summer heat waves. now, about 19% of the state is in dry conditions, with nearly 1% in drought. >> in san luis obispo county. if you're planning to visit the iconic hearst castle soon, you may be in for a surprise. workers are adapting to protect the castle from the heat we've been experiencing. extra precautions are being taken to protect the iconic hearst castl. as i just said during the heat, that means they're altering some tours. they've installed misters around the property, and they've put up umbrellas to shade areas outside. inside, officials say it's a real balancing act.

harris lolobo was 14 years old when he died after eating a spicy chip in september of 2023. he was found unresponsive by police and brought to a hospita, where he later died. an autopsy report found that lobo died from ingesting a high amount of the chili pepper extract in the chip. the report also found that
