county, fire crews are on the scene of multiple vegetation fires in pittsburg, oakley and antioch. this is video of one of the fires burning along highway four in pittsburg. a separate fire sent smoke into the air above highway four. you can see in antioch. both happened between 2 and 3:00 this afternoon. meantime, in the south bay, fire crews got the upper hand of a grass fire at stonecrest and fox ridge way, five acres burned, but forward progress was stopped. this afternoon. you can see the fire came right up to a fence, but luckily did not cause any damage to any structures. >> all right, now to the developing story out of sfo, where at least one person was injured after a laptop caught fire on a plane. >> abc seven news reporter suzanne phan is live at sfo and is live now with the latest developments. suzanne. reporter so larry, kristin. >> fortunately, everyone evacuated safely. we hear that three people were hurt with minor injuries during this emergency. now we're getting conflicting reports. the airport tells us that this happened

while the plane was taxiing. and then we heard from american airlines that this actually happened while people were boarding the plane. passengers on the plane shared these comments on x, formerly twitter at im dat girl xo posted quote our american airlines flight to miami at sfo caught fire as we were boarding. look to the back of the plane and saw so much smoke and people screaming. something in the backpack below seems to be what caught fire. kris vogt posted on x quote someone's bag caught fire in the cabin of aa 45 at sfo an hour right before we took off, and it wasn't even a boeing plane. he went on to say there was a light stampede. people were screaming fire in the back and rushing towards the doors, but supposedly everyone is okay. vogt said the fire department looked at a black bag on the tarmac. san francisco fire department this afternoon said crews observed smoke but no actual flames. american airlines released this statement saying, quote, during boarding of american airlines flight 2045 with service from san francisco to miami. smoke was reported

from inside a customer's bag. the bag was quickly removed by our crew members and all customers exited the aircraft. we thank crew members for their professionalism and apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. you can see video of crews working on the tarmac handling a black laptop bag. at one point, they appeared to move the bag and dump it into a large industrial tub of water. american airlines says smoke was reported from the laptop within the customer bag. american airlines says customers deplaned using emergency slides. others using the jet bridge. according to the airlines, one person was hurt in the process with minor injuries. late today, we told some travelers about the emergency on the tarmac. this is what they had to say. >> we take these risks when we fly like this, but people don't pay attention to that battery thing. they ask you, is everything turned off? and that could have been the problem if a bag was smoking, you know, these laptops that we carry around. so casually can be pretty dangerous. so >> and again, we are still waiting for official word that

what caused the smoke again, that smoke coming from inside of a laptop bag. according to authorities, it was enough to cause that plane to stop to be evacuated entirely. that plane full of passengers. that's the latest live here at sfo. suzanne phan abc seven news. all right. >> thank you. suzanne. fortunately, it wasn't anything super serious with the plane involved. >> a brief court appearance today for shane killian, the alameda man accused of killing four members of his own family on wednesday night. the victims included his wife, his young son and his in-laws. a fifth victim, killian's one year old child, survived the shooting, but he's in critical condition. the 54 year old killian has a criminal past. he served 60 days in jail for misdemeanor assault on a government official in north carolina 13 years ago, the incident involved a gun at a gas station that led to a high-speed chase. >> the speeds traveled during this incident was at 125mph in a 55 mile per hour zone. that's

the speeds that they got up to. and ultimately mr. killian ended up wrecking his vehicle and then fled on foot and was took into custody within an hour of the incident. >> a motive for wednesday night's shooting on kittyhawk lane in alameda is still unclear. killian is expected back in court. >> the concord police department is remembering vacaville police officer matthew bowen, who was killed in a crash involving a suspected dui driver yesterday. >> bowen, who used to work in concord, is described as funny, relatable and a strong leader. here's abc seven news reporter anser hassan. >> thursday morning, vacaville police officer matthew bowen's motorcycle laid in the road after he was fatally struck by a driver who may have been driving under the influence of drugs. >> we lost a tremendous police officer, but an even better human being. this morning in matthew bowen. the chp says officer bowen was conducting a traffic stop when he was hit from behind by the vehicle. >> officer bowen worked at the

concord police department prior to joining the vacaville pd. concord honored bowen with this tribute, saying he was known for his work ethic, solid performance, and friendly demeanor. officer bowen was extremely well liked and respected as a member of our department. he's left a lasting impact on all of us who worked with him. >> he meant a lot to us. and then to find this news out, uh- it sucked and it hurts, but we'll miss him so. >> officer daniel gallegos joined the police force around the same time as bowen. they worked together alongside one another for a few years, he says. officer bowen wasn't just a good friend, but also a strong leader. >> this job isn't easy. the things we have to kind of go through on a daily basis, the things we see and encounter. it's always good to have somebody there alongside you that has, you know, a positive outlook and is always in that good mood that can bring, people up in dark times. and he was always the one to kind of do that. just with his attitude and his personality. >> i was actually on my way to

meet him for coffee, i had canine training yesterday in vacaville, so we were texting the night before, but thursday morning there was no response as concord police officer rj olson, they were beat partners for one year in concord. >> he describes officer bowen as someone who came to work, ready to work hard and reliable. officer bowen, who was 32 years old, joined vacaville pd to be closer to home and spend more time with his wife and two young sons. >> he had the world ahead of him. he was he was still fairly new in the profession and has a young family who are, you know, which makes it even more sad because they're going to grow up. and his kids probably, you know, haven't really had a chance to get to know him. so it's just really hard thinking about that. >> the driver accused of hitting officer bowen was arrested and charged with homicide and driving under the influence in concord, anser hassan. abc seven news. >> such a loss is so young. a teenager who stabbed a brentwood police officer last october will spend the next six years in

juvenile hall. that is the maximum allowed by state law. on my moved by the of the incident where the then 16 year old strikes the officer. another officer quickly approaches and orders the teen to drop the knife. a short time later, a bystander tackled the young man. brentwood police say the officer has fully recovered. now, after suffering life threatening injuries. initially, the marin county man convicted of a 2012 drive by shooting and stealing celebrity chef guy fieri's lamborghini could soon be out of prison on parole, according to our partners at the sf standard, a state parole board granted max waid's release on good behavior after he was assessed as a moderate low risk. this is video of him from 2014. weight was granted this despite strong objections from the marin county da's office. he was originally sentenced to 21 years to life in prison for attempted murder of a romantic rival and

for grand theft, but that sentence got reduced, making him eligible for parole this year. the board's decision is subject to review for up to 120 days. >> new developments in the involuntary manslaughter case against alec baldwin. the actor cried as a judge dismissed the case with prejudice and ruled that it cannot be filed again. the decision was based on the misconduct of police and prosecutors over the withholding of evidence from the defense. baldwin was charged in the shooting. death of cinematographer halyna hutchins on the set of the film rust. >> all right, back locally, we're going to turn to the weather. thankfully, the heat wave is almost over. >> yeah, it's already pretty comfortable now for a lot of people, but not everyone. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with a look at what's ahead. sandhya. >> yeah, what's ahead is temperatures are going to continue to trend down. kristen and larry, let's take a look at a live picture right now and you will notice a lot of haze from mount tam, but also the marine layer hanging around. temperatures have dropped. it's ten degrees cooler in oakland right now down 15 in santa rosa.

san jose is down double digits, but inland areas are still in the triple digits. right now you can see 103 in concord, 104 in fairfield. quite a difference along the coast where temperatures are in the 60s, inland areas will remain under the excessive heat warning until tonight. heat advisory shaded in orange. also until tonight, solano county until 9 p.m. saturday. so still take it easy out there, especially if you are inland, because you can see even at 5:00, we're still hot inland. seven 1580s and 90s away from the coastline. going into late tonight, you will notice those temperatures beginning to come down, but also an increase in some of that monsoon moisture moving into our area that will add a little humidity to the air also will bring the concern a slight chance. 5 to 10% of dry lightning here in the bay area. i'll be back with a full look at your weekend forecast. coming right up. kristen. >> oh all right sandy, thank you. across the state, heat and potential lightning activity

could be bad for firefighters. there are currently more than a dozen wildfires burning in california. the lake fire in santa barbara county has burned 36,000 acres. it's just 16% contained. there have been more than 3600 fires so far this year that have burned 228,000 acres together. that is 20 times the acreage of last year in san francisco. >> a new effort to fight those sideshows that just keep popping up across the city. week after week. residents near california and divisadero streets are hoping speed bumps will deter those sideshows. >> abc seven news reporter luz pena spoke with people who have been waiting a long time for a solution. luz. >> yes, and during the pandemic, sideshows became a big issue for san francisco. this led to the passing of a legislation that allowed officers to impound vehicles that were part of sideshows. but not even that has stopped many of them. so now there's an intersection trying out speed bumps. stunt driving

or sideshows is happening across the bay area. just three weeks ago, traffic on the bay bridge came to a stop because of a sideshow. overnight, a scene residents on california and divisadero streets are familiar with. this is not a bridge, but the tire marks tell a story of a neighborhood that has been crying out for help. >> all the cars and bikes running around at like 1 a.m. 2 a.m. wake everyone up. >> after multiple years waiting for a solution. this week, the city installed speed bumps, hoping this will stop the sideshows that torment this neighborhood. this worker who did not want to be identified, said they constantly come back to work. the morning after a sideshow to graffiti on their walls. >> the first thing you can see, because you have to cross the streets. the walls where i work vandalized. >> they're hoping the speed bumps will make a difference. >> i'm a fan. if it's going to stop these sideshows in 2020, supervisor asha safai introduced

legislation to combat sideshows in san francisco. >> it allowed sfpd to impound vehicles for 14 days after the first offense. after the second offense and even stronger penalty. >> you're involved in stunt driving in san francisco. we're taking your car for 30 days. >> our abc7 news data team looked into the latest incident reports and found that since january, there have been 24 stunt driving incidents reported in the city and 11 just last month, according to supervisor safai, not many cars have been impounded. multiple sideshows in san francisco this year and only five cars have been impounded, only five to date. >> and last year in 2023, only six. >> if this legislation is not stopping them, then what can? we spoke to oakland council member noel gallo. oakland has been fighting sideshows for years, so what is working for them in the neighborhoods, >> the planter boxes, cement boxes, the trees that neighbors have planning does deter the

vessels to zero emissions, this ahead of a fast approaching state deadline, and that includes the launch of a passenger ferry that will cruise through san francisco bay. abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez takes a look. >> so i'm inside the ferry right now, and on july 19th, it will run for free for six months. so you can try it out. it goes between here and pier 41, but today we got a sneak peek inside. see? change. the world's first commercial passenger ferry powered 100% by zero emission hydrogen fuel cells. it's a 70

foot catamaran ferry that fits 75 people. stakeholders gathered near the ferry building to celebrate this innovation. i think it's just appropriate that san francisco, which is a leader in so many things and especially when it comes to the environmen, is a leader in making sure that ferries become clean, because i think that was the one criticism of water transit. >> it was that it was polluting. and even though we have really cleaned by, by comparison, diesel boats, it's not nearly the same as having absolutely zero emission boats. >> that's not the only change coming. the angel island tiburon ferry company is getting ready to convert its boats to fully electric vessels. today, operators signed an agreement with a company from new zealand to design and build an all new vessel. the state is requiring all short distance ferries to be emissions free by the end of 2025. we're proud to be the supplier of the hydrogen system on board, which enables it to run with zero emission, the only

exhaust is pure water, so pure that you can drink it and there's a drinking fountain on board. >> so i invite everybody to do that as well. >> the ferry is owned by switch maritime and developed with support from a grant from the california air resources board, and made possible with the help of sponsorships and partners in san francisco. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> and two men who helped spearhead the deal for new emission free ferries also met today discussing other opportunities. governor gavin newsom and new zealand prime minister christopher luxon got together in san francisco this morning. they're looking for other ways to further link california and new zealand economically. >> you know, california is some 20-17. this is the place that new zealand families save money for years to come, because it would mean gardens are going to come here once they come back at the end. >> today's gathering is just the latest example of california's commitment to international collaboration. back in april, governor newsom welcomed the delegation from norway, and during that visit, both sides signed a memorandum memorandum

of understanding to advance their climate and clean energy partnership. >> the 23rd regiment of the us marine corps has dedicated a new classroom and training center in san bruno. it's named for corporal freddie hollier, a marine who served in world war two, earning two purple hearts. the ceremony also honored corporal hollier's daughter for her and her husband's generous support in the project. >> welcome to our house, ma'am. now this is your house. okay thank you. for what? this heritage and training room has already done and will do for the marines and sailors and marines. >> the 23rd marine regiment also unveiled the new bar none bar, also dedicated to the corporal. the gathering place will be used for marines of all ranks to celebrate promotions, awards and honor their fallen comrades. >> all right, turning to the forecast now as we head straight into the weekend. a slight drop in temperatures, yes, but i'm

also eyeing that dry lightning possibility. >> sandhya? >> yeah, it's a 5 to 10% chance this weekend. it's a very slim chance, larry and kristen. but certainly temperatures will trend lower this weekend. let me show you live doppler seven right now. and i am happy to tell you that the marine layer is reestablishing itself along the entire coastline, which of course brings the higher humidity. we are going to continue to see the cooling as we look at the bigger picture here. there's an area of low pressure off the coastline that's going to keep the cooling going high pressure has shifted to the east, which is why the heat has begun to ease. but the rotation around that is drying up. the monsoon moisture, which is why the sierra is seeing thunderstorms right now. and there are red flag warnings until sunday evening for the sierra, as the fire danger will remain high due to the fact that the thunderstorms will bring very little to no rain. so the concern is there. fire weather watch for parts of southern california and northern california this upcoming weekend. a live view from our

emeryville camera. there's a lot of haze out there. certainly watching that marine layer just shrouding parts of sutro tower 65 degrees right now in san francisco, it is 70. in oakland, 88 in san jose, and 57 chilly in half moon bay along the embarcadero. we do have a nice breeze going in the 80s from santa rosa to petaluma. napa. you get inland and we still have those triple digits as we expected 104 in fairfield, 100 in livermore. here's the marine layer from our sfo camera overnight tonight, a mix of fog and clouds. your weekend forecast, the cooling trend continues. and early next week it's hard to believe, especially since we've been above average for so long. but we'll be near average in terms of our temperatures. let's go hour by hour. you will notice the marine layer increasing and also notice a monsoon moisture coming in from the south. as we go through tonight and into tomorrow. in the morning there will be some drizzle right near the coast. the other thing i want to draw your attention to is as that monsoon flow continues, those

thunderstorms and rain will develop across parts of the sierra. so that's the reason why we're keeping an eye on this for the time being. your morning temperatures definitely will come down 50s to 60s for most of you. you have to get well inland in places like antioch, where you'll be in the 70s. still tomorrow afternoon in the south bay, 89, in san jose, 91 for you in morgan hill on the peninsula, 74 in san mateo. mostly cloudy along the coast. low 60s. downtown san francisco, 67 degrees in the north bay. you're going to notice those temperatures coming down as well. 84 san rafael, 86, in santa rosa and the east bay low 70s berkeley, oakland head inland and it's 91 in walnut creek, 94 degrees in livermore. more in line with what you'd expect. the accuweather seven day forecast, temperatures going down some more sunday, monday into tuesday, and then a recovery for the second half of next week. right now, it looks like the heat will return by friday of next week. stay tuned to larry and kristen. things could change, but for the time

previous launch. according to spacex, the unmanned rocket carrying starlink satellites suffered an engine malfunction several minutes after takeoff from vandenberg space force base. spacex is blaming the incident on a liquid oxygen leak. the company says the satellites will reenter the atmosphere and just burn up. >> today, nasa is celebrating the two year anniversary of the james webb telescope. and to mark the occasion, nasa released a new image showing a pair of intertwined galaxies, which nasa calls the penguin and the egg. i thought it looked like more like a dolphin, but you know, it's like your own rorschach test. you see what you want to see this morning? yeah, it looks like a dolphin, right? you're right. all right. they should change it this morning on our 7 a.m. streaming show, we spoke

with director eric smith. the program scientist for the webb telescope uh. >> the penguin or the orange one was probably a spiral type galaxy that is being torn apart in the interaction with the egg or that round galaxy down below. so these galaxies will eventually, in about a billion years, merge together. uh. and this is in the constellation hydra. for those who want to know that. and it's about 400 million light years from earth. >> yeah, a billion years from now, we'll keep you posted with any updates. astronomers estimate the webb telescope will operate for at least 20 years. and we're getting a look at the finalists in the astronomy photographer of the year competition. there were more than 2500 entries from 60 countries. 31 made the shortlist. the competition is run by the royal observatory, which is in its 16th year doing these contests. this year's winners will be announced on september 12th, oh that's fantastic because you like you like the northern lights, you know, all about the northern lights. >> biased. yeah. nice

the president in a letter to colleagues, jeffries says he expressed the full breadth of insight, heartfelt perspectives and conclusions about the path forward that the caucus has shared. jeffries did not say if he told biden to remain in the race or drop out as president. biden works to calm anxieties over his mental fitness. sources say he's meeting with both the congressional hispanic and asian pacific american caucuses today, as well as the progressive caucus tomorrow. and when abc news washington uh- marist national poll found 50% of voters say if the election happened today, they would vote for president biden, that's up 1% from last month's survey, which was taken before the debate. >> the same percentage also said they would vote for vice president kamala harris or governor gavin newsom, though newsom did slightly better. >> several members of the san francisco democratic county central committee said they will throw their support behind vice president kamala harris if president biden steps down. i

spoke with dscc member bilal mahmood earlier today on our 3 p.m. show, getting answers. >> president biden has been an incredible president leader on climate change and abortion rights, and he's made incredible progress. and what's at risk now is that progress being rolled back. but unfortunately, what we're seeing over the last couple of weeks is that polling is going down and it is reflective of what we're seeing with our eyes. and so the seven of us on the san francisco democratic party wrote a letter asking that should president biden step down, that vice president harris be the nominee that's opposed to like an open selection process that george clooney and some others have called for? >> by the way, this group, dscc members, are not calling on biden to drop out. but mahmood says he hopes the president will step aside. former president trump will no longer be subject to suspension penalties on facebook and instagram. parent company meta says it's because he is a presumed presidential nominee. meta says members of

the public should be able to hear what politicians are saying so they can make informed choices. >> all right, heads up now if you're an at&t customer because the company has revealed nearly every customer's call and text records from 2022 have been exposed in a data breach, reporter leticia juarez, from our sister station in los angeles, has details. >> are they going to find anything interesting? of course >> sumika sykes is one of the millions of at&t customers impacted by a massive data breach. at&t disclosing hackers were able to seize six months worth of phone logs back in 2022. >> they need to do better, and we got to find out what's going on and make sure it's not an inside job. >> while hackers don't have the contents of the calls or texts, they do have the phone numbers and texts, including approximate locations coming from those communications. that information, known as metadata, has cyber experts like albert foxconn, founder of surveillance technology oversight project, or

stop worried. >> it could put people in harm's way, revealing where they live, where they work, where they spend, every moment that they're near their device. and because our cell phones are constantly connecting to the cell towers, they are one of the most potent tracking tools that exist. >> hackers were able to pull off the heist by breaking into a third party cloud server, and download customers phone records, at&t said the stolen data did not include customers names. social security or credit card numbers. >> there's smart people out there. the world is getting smarter and smarter. and so i think that the people that they're hiring need to also be at that education level. >> at&t, along with law enforcement, are investigating the breach. still, the damage has already been done with customers calling on their telecommunication companies to do more to secure their information. >> they need to have special software so these hackers can't get into something like that. we

giving it a new life in people's homes, >> this is going to be a big wine bar, that's oak from the area. i never really had a father figure in my life, so i kind of always built benches and work areas in every house we lived in and kind of just self-taught on the woodworking and fell in love with it through the years. working with wood is just a natural thing for me. it's almost like therapy. it's something that's a great passion of mine. i remember this area before the fires and it was a lot greener there was a lot more foliage around, and so i'm just trying to save some of that wood and put it back in the homes of, of, you know, the community. my name is jesse olmos. i own sonoma woodworks, and i've lived in sonoma county for since i was about six years old. once the fires happened, there's been a lot of people that want to you know, meet a to salvage their

trees and build them furniture, especially with all the downed trees and the material that was basically taken, taken to the dump. working with wood is just a natural thing for me. it's almost like therapy. it's something that's a great passion of mine. my friends and family, you know, saw some of my work and kind of convinced me into maybe showing it to other people. so i went to a farmers market in 2011 and brought some pieces with me, and from there it just kind of blew up. i'm always just anxious to see what's inside the logs. it's like christmas. i mean, it's just like, you never know what you're going to get. beautiful grain and it all comes from this area. so it's kind of unique, people like that, that connection. and when you get a big log, that's good for a table. say, you know, just seeing the sequence of the slabs, you know, going through the log and what you know, which ones i could put together to make a beautiful conference

table or, you know, dining room table that, you know, people are going to sit around for years and years to come. it does take a very long time to dry the wood about five years from when i mill it till i build furniture with it. so it's not a simple process. it's, it takes a while. it's what all these stacks of wood around me are in here drying for their final year to, to be able to build furniture with. oh. nice one. i love working for myself. i can be around and raise my son, so it's been really good. he'd rather be, you know, at the soccer field or, you know, riding his bike or something. but, a few times my son has come and help, you know, and he's he's said, dad, we got to we have to do this more often. let's make it like an assembly line and get all these charcuterie boards for, get a whole pile of them. so i don't know. i haven't seen him back since, but we'll see. hopefully it will. we'll, start rolling like that. it'd be fun. and that's book matched when you open it up and they're identica.
