the main cabin of an american airlines flight at san francisco international airport. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. the emergency evacuation happened as passengers were boarding, getting ready to head to miami. luckily, there were no major injuries, and that flight has now been rescheduled to depart this evening at 1115. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn is at sfo. joins us live with the story. suzanne >> so, dan, thank goodness this emergency did not happen while the plane was in the air. everyone was able to evacuate the plane safely, some of them using those emergency slides. we know that three people were hurt, but they were not hurt seriously. and they didn't have to go to the hospital. according to airport authorities. passengers were boarding flight 2045 when the crew reported smoke in the cabin, according to american airlines. passengers on the plane shared these comments on x, formerly twitter. one person posted, quote, our american airlines flight to miami at sfo caught fire as we

were boarding, look to the back of the plane and saw so much smoke and people screaming. something in the backpack below seems to be what caught fire. chris vogt posted on x quote someone's bag caught fire in the cabin of aa 45 at sfo an hour right before we took off and it wasn't even a boeing plane. there was a light stampede. people were screaming fire in the back and rushing towards the doors. but supposedly everyone is okay. video from sky seven shows the fire department looking at a black bag on the tarmac. san francisco fire department this afternoon said crews observed smoke but no actual flames. american airlines released this statement saying, quote, during boarding of american airlines flight 2045 with service from san francisco to miami. smoke was reported from inside a customer's bag. the bag was quickly removed by her crew members and all customers exited the aircraft. we thank our crew members for their professionalism and apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. you can see video of crews working on the tarmac handling a black laptop bag. at one point, they appeared

to move the bag and dump it into a large industrial tub of water. american airlines says smoke was reported from the laptop within the customer bag. american airlines says customers deplaned using emergency slides, others using the jetbridge, according to the airlines, one person was hurt in the process, with minor injuries. late today, we told some travelers about the emergency on the tarmac. this is what they had to say. >> we take these risks when we fly like this, but people don't pay attention to that battery thing. they ask you, is everything turned off? and that could have been the problem. if a bag was smoking. you know, these laptops that we carry around so casually can be pretty dangerous. >> and we're still waiting for official word from the fire department on what caused all the smoke. again, we are hearing from authorities that there was smoke coming from inside a laptop bag earlier today, and that was serious enough for a plane full of passengers to have to evacuate the plane before it took off. we're live at sfo. suzanne phan abc seven news.

>> scary. all right, suzanne, thanks very much. a brief court appearance today for the alameda man accused of killing four members of his own family on wednesday night, 54 year old shane killian did not enter a plea today. police say he killed his wife, his young son and his in-laws inside their home on kittyhawk road. a fifth victim, killian's one year old son, survived the shooting but is in critical condition. killian has a criminal past. he served 60 days in jail for misdemeanor assault on a government official in north carolina that was 13 years ago. the incident involved a gun at a gas station that led to a high speed chase. >> the speeds traveled during this incident was at 125mph in a 55 mile per hour zone. that's the speeds that they got up to and ultimately mr. killian ended up wrecking his vehicle. and then fled on foot and was took into custody within an hour of the incident. >> a motive for wednesday night's shooting on kitty hawk

road is still unclear. what triggered this. killian is expected back in court next week. the concord police department is remembering vacaville police officer matthew bowen, who was killed in a crash involving a suspected dui driver yesterday. bowen, who used to work in concord, is described as funny, reliable and a strong leader. here's abc seven news reporter anser hassan. >> thursday morning, vacaville police officer matthew bowen's motorcycle laid in the road after he was fatally struck by a driver who may have been driving under the influence of drugs. >> we lost a tremendous police officer, but an even better human being this morning in matthew bowen. >> the chp says officer bowen was conducting a traffic stop when he was hit from behind by the vehicle. officer bowen worked at the concord police department prior to joining the vacaville pd. concord honored bowen with this tribute, saying he was known for his work ethic, solid performance, and friendly demeanor. officer bowen was extremely well liked and respected as a member of our department. he's left a lasting

impact on all of us who worked with him. >> he meant a lot to us. and then to find this news out, uh- it sucked and it hurts, but we'll miss him so. >> officer daniel gallegos joined the police force around the same time as bowen. they worked together alongside one another for a few years, he says. officer bowen wasn't just a good friend, but also a strong leader. >> this job isn't easy. the things we have to kind of go through on a daily basis, the things we see and encounter. it's always good to have somebody there alongside you that has, you know, a positive outlook and is always in that good mood that can bring, people up in dark times. and he was always the one to kind of do that just with his attitude and his personality. >> i was actually on my way to meet him for coffee, i had canine training yesterday in vacaville, so we were texting the night before, but thursday morning there was no response as concord police officer rj olson,

they were beat partners for one year in concord. >> he describes officer bowen as someone who came to work ready to work hard and reliable. officer bowen, who was 32 years old, joined vacaville pd to be closer to home and spend more time with his wife and two young sons. >> he had the world ahead of him. he was he was still fairly new in the profession and has a young family who are, you know, which makes it even more sad because they're going to grow up. and his kids probably, you know, haven't really had a chance to get to know him. so it's just really hard thinking about that. >> the driver accused of hitting officer bowen was arrested and charged with homicide and driving under the influence in concord, anser hassan. abc seven news. >> berkeley police want to make families aware of the arrest of a man accused of sexually assaulting a number of children, were sharing his name and photo because police are concerned that there may be more victims. the suspect is 25 year old tyler livingston, who had an outstanding warrant for sexual assault. he was a swim instructor throughout the bay area and may have spent time as

a substitute teacher. berkeley police say several parents came forward with their concerns in the south bay. fire crews got the upper hand on a grass fire at stonecrest and fox ridge way in san jose not long ago. this broke out just before 235 acres burned, but forward progress was stopped. this afternoon. you can see the fire came right up to a fence, but did not cause any damage to any structures. close call, but they worked fast to keep it from spreading anymore. and in contra costa county, fire crews responded to a number of vegetation fires in pittsburgh, oakley and antioch. look at this video of one of the fires burning along highway four in pittsburgh. a separate fire sent smoke into the air above highway four in antioch. both happened between 2 and 3 this afternoon, while it was so hot out. and while it's definitely still hot and dry out there, the good news is we are really at the tail end of this heat wave. here's a live

look outside right now. so for the latest on the conditions, let's go to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya >> yeah dan we have definitely noticed a difference today. but like you mentioned, it's still hot inland. so let's take a look at the highs. so far. santa rosa hitting 93 degrees was 84in napa. triple digits. concord livermore 92 in san jose and redwood city in the 80s compared to 24 hours ago. 19 degrees cooler in oakland, down 14. in santa rosa, you can see those triple digits in our inland valleys, but along the coastline we've got 50s and 60s. excessive heat warnings and heat advisories remain up until 8 p.m. tonight for solano county. that is going until tomorrow night. still an increased risk of heat illnesses. so just be careful out there, especially if you're inland 90s and one hundreds at 6:00 tonight. it's a slow cooling for our inland areas. it will be cool along the coastline like it is right now. 10:00 tonight we are looking at 70s and 80s. and finally those temperatures dropping off as we head towards the late night hours. i'll be back to tell you about this cooling trend that is

going to last. but there's also a possibility, a slight risk of dry lightning. more on that coming up. dan okay, cynthia, thanks very much. >> we'll touch base again in a moment. governor newsom continues his push to strengthen california's international ties. newsom met with new zealand prime minister christopher luxon in san francisco this morning. they're looking for other ways to further link california and new zealand economically. that meeting took place shortly after operators of the angel island tiburon ferry company signed an agreement with a company from new zealand to design and build an all new zero emissions vessel. the ferry company is getting ready to convert its boats to fully electric vessels. well, nearly every at&t customer and many non at&t customers had their call and text records exposed as part of a massive data breach. i got one of those notices today. in fact, maybe you did. at&t has known since april that customer data was illegally downloaded, but only made that announcement today.

abc seven news reporter melanie woodrow now with the story. >> at&t says nearly all of its 110 million wireless subscribers call and text message records were exposed in a massive data breach. the stolen data includes every number at&t customers called or texted, even customers of other wireless networks. the number of times they interacted and the call duration. >> i feel like this is just another incident in this trend of data privacy issues. >> in april, at&t says it learned that customer data was illegally downloaded from its workspace onto a third party cloud platform. the wireless provider says it launched an investigation and took steps to close off the illegal access point. the compromised data includes records of calls and texts between may 1st, 2022 and october 31st, 2022. it also includes records from january 2nd, 2023 for a very small number of customers for a subset of records, one or more cell site id numbers were included. data that could reveal the geographic location of one or more callers. >> i'm really wary of where my

contact information is going and who has access to it, and so this is just really frustrating. as a consumer, the data does not contain the content of calls or texts or personal information like social security numbers or birth dates. >> while the data does not include customer names, at&t concedes there are ways using publicly available online tools to find a name associated with a specific telephone number. wireless customers are disappointed at&t waited to make the announcement. >> if anyone's in your system and you don't know, let's say a week after, then your company should not have customers data. >> their notification process sort of could have happened a lot earlier. >> at&t says it does not believe the data is publicly available. the provider also says it's their understanding that at least one person has been apprehended. a department of justice spokesperson told abc seven news it could not confirm or deny that. melanie woodrow, abc seven news. >> we're coming up here a new exhibit highlighting the historical legacy of marin city and the contribution of its black pioneers. abc seven news

many who came to the area during world war two to work in the shipyards. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with the founder of the exhibit about what it means to her. >> it is a california black history story. it is a national story. >> merritt city resident felicia gaston is preserving the rich history of her community the only way she knows how, by creating an exhibit for all to see at the marin county library. >> what i like about it is that whatever area you live in, you can come and get a taste of it through a partnership with the library. >> gaston's archive collection is now on display at all ten branches, highlighting the

history of black pioneers who came to marin city in the 1940s to build ships for the war effort. >> they came out to build a better life for themselves and their families. they were leaving the jim crow south, but when they came here, they all helped build these 93 ships. >> what we love is really, i think, celebrating those hometown heroes. i mean, the history of what, you know, families, individuals had to endure and coming from the south to marin city for a better life. >> pictures, artifacts and newspaper clippings tell the story of strength and struggle during the height of world war two, about 6000 people were living here in marin city, many of them black. some faced racism and segregation at the nearby shipyards, but welder joseph james fillled a civil rights lawsuit and one during the early 40s, the boilermakers wanted all the blacks to be in a separate union, and joseph james was like, oh no, we're not here to be in the jim crow, in the shipyards. >> we're all working for the

southern california. you will notice high pressure has shifted eastward, allowing the heat to ease a bit. here today. but we are seeing thunderstorms in the sierra. there's an area of low pressure off the california coast that's also helping and will help to draw up that moisture, the monsoon flow. so we do have red flag warnings for the sierra fire weather watches for parts of socal and northern california, dry lightning potential is the concern for them. for us, while we're not under any warnings or anything for the weekend, there's a 5 to 10% chance of dry lightning here, so just be aware in case things change. right now though, we are certainly seeing the marine layer reestablishing itself along the coastline. temperatures have come down. believe it or not, they're in the triple digits still inland. so still hot. no doubt about it. 50s coast side 62 degrees right now in the city, the air quality is good to moderate at this hour. over the weekend as the breezes pick up. we are expecting some of this to improve and most of you will be

in the good air quality mode. certainly winds have been picking up on shore, gusting to 32 miles an hour in oakland, 20 in concord right now, 24 sustained at sfo. that's going to help to continue to drive our temperatures down over the weekend. live views from our tower cameras. i'm going to step aside a lot of sun from san jose to walnut creek to our oakland airport camera, but the golden gate is now socked in with fog. all right, if you are getting out of town, it is aloha friday time travel forecast out of okay 73 tomorrow afternoon. partly cloudy, cooler day if you are flying to kahului, it is going to be windy. 88 degrees kona 20% chance of showers and 73 degrees. the view from our golden gate bridge camera is certainly showing you what you're going to see overnight tonight, a mix of fog and clouds, your weekend forecast cooling trend continues and early next week we are expecting near average temperatures. so as we go hour by hour, not only do we have the fog around, but you'll notice the monsoon flow. more cloud cover overnight tonight. going into tomorrow

morning. higher humidity which is good from a fire weather perspective. we'll certainly see some mist and drizzle along the coast, but unfortunately not expecting a lot of moisture in the sierra where thunderstorms are expected. that's why the fire danger is going to be high for that area. tomorrow afternoon evening. you will notice that there's thunderstorms could potentially develop there. your morning temperatures here in the bay area 50 to 60s, 73 degrees in antioch. partly to mostly cloudy skies to start the day tomorrow afternoon. temperatures will continue to come down our inland east bay, no longer in the triple digits. low to mid 90s. there along the coastline, you'll be in the 50s and 60s, mostly cloudy and certainly a breezy afternoon. as we check out the accuweather seven day forecast, those temperatures will trend even lower for sunday, monday and tuesday will be bottoming out near average by tuesday. upper 80s inland low 60s coast side. and then the numbers will slowly come up a few degrees. i think next friday
