man accused of killing four of his family members at their alameda home. new information as the man facing charges and a judge for the first time. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. there are new details about shane killian. the alameda man accused of killing four members of his family wednesday night. killian

was arraigned in court this afternoon and is being charged with several felonies. abc seven news reporter tim johns has been following this story for us for the past few days, and he spoke with one of killian's coworkers and also looked into another incident in north carolina. >> reporter these photographs show shane killian being arraigned in an oakland courthouse friday afternoon. the 54 year old killian is charged with multiple felonies after he allegedly shot and killed his wife, his in-laws and his six year old son at their house in alameda wednesday night. he's also accused of shooting his one year old child, who remains in critical condition. michael saxby worked with killian at the martinez refinery. saxby tells me he and some of his colleagues showed up in court friday afternoon and we saw him, but he never really looked at us, so he didn't acknowledge that we were there. saxby says killian was at work on wednesday before the shootings took place. he says while he had a few personality quirks, no one thought he was capable of the things he's alleged to have done. >> nothing really happened on the job that anyone felt was

something that would have just set a guy off to make him take off. >> killian does have a criminal past, however. police records show that back in 2011, he served 60 days in jail for misdemeanor assault on a police officer in north carolina. the incident involved a gun at a gas station, as well as a high speed chase with speeds up to 125 miles an hour. assistant chief ryan cunningham works at the police department in the city where that took place. >> for any law enforcement agency as a whole, this is a very serious and a dangerous situation, cunningham says. >> while he doesn't remember many specific details about killian, the news of the shootings in alameda has shocked his department in murphy north carolina. >> it's just a tragedy and, you know, you can only hope and pray for the families and the neighbors in that area and the law enforcement that's involved, no matter the amount of training that we've had, doesn't prepare you to respond to an incident like this. >> a sense of disbelief also felt by saxby and his coworkers here in the bay area. >> two, we really didn't believe that what actually happened until we recognized his house

and his vehicle, and we started putting two and two together. >> a motor for wednesday night shootings is still unclear. in alameda, tim johns abc seven news. >> fremont police tonight are trying to find a missing three year old girl whose father died today. he was found in san francisco. authorities say elliott lorenzo was last seen yesterday at 6:00 with her father in fremont. he was supposed to return her today to her mother. you see her picture here? she's three feet, six inches tall and weighs about 45 pounds. ellie's mother made this emotional plea tonight. >> ellie, i love you so much. please please know that we looking for you. and we're going to find you. so please just hold on and everything will be okay. >> your heart just goes out to that mother. police are trying to retrace the father's steps and are looking at surveillance video. anyone with information

on ellie's whereabouts is please asked to call fremont police. developing news out of san francisco international airport. this was the chaotic scene earlier today as passengers scrambled to evacuate from an american airlines flight as just smoke filled the cabin right before the plane was about to take off for miami. >> fell off the aircraft. you're not. get your belongings. >> the smoke came from a laptop battery that caught fire. everyone got off the plane, but three people did get injured in the panic. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez spoke with a passenger, as well as experts about what they say is a growing problem out. go forward, go forward. >> frantic moments captured from the san francisco international airport during an emergency evacuation. >> we got a mayday, mayday, mayday. there's a fire in the back of the aircraft. start the fire rescue. >> that fire official said came from a laptop battery inside a

passenger's bag on boarded the miami bound flight with his family around one friday afternoon. >> when we got in the back of the plane, we already started to smell something that smelled like burnt cables. >> ejiochi was seated next to his father. the laptop belonged to the passenger sitting behind them. it was just like a massive flame out of nowhere. the american airlines flight crew reported a fire in the cabin. passengers used emergency slides and the jetbridge to exit forward. yankee took this two minute and 33 second long video of the evacuation that didn't go as fast as he hoped. >> oh my god. so many people took their bags. so many people just took their bags out of the overhead compartment. i was also screaming at one point, just leave your bags and get out. >> sfo authorities said three people were injured while evacuating the plane. we spoke with aviation analyst john nance. >> it's also extremely serious

to call for an emergency evacuation because we're going to hurt a few people, not usually seriously on a smaller airplane, but still people go down slides the wrong way. >> sky seven captured the moment officials dipped the laptop in a bin of water. when it comes to lithium battery fires on airlines. when former pilot and now consultant said it happens more than we think. >> the faa says that it's a it occurs about once a week and there's a 42% increase in these incidents in the last five years, probably because everyone has electronic devices. >> american airlines issued a statement, we thank our crew members for their professionalism and apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. yankee was relieved the fire didn't break out during the six hour flight. >> i mean, i'm feeling great. i mean, i'm alive. that's the best thing that i could have happened today. >> this was his first trip to the u.s. and a memorable one. >> we still have four more days. i don't know what what can go

wrong at this point. but to finish it like that, it's kind of crazy. >> in the south bay, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> in the south bay, firefighters quickly got the upper hand on a grass fire this afternoon at stonecrest and fox ridge way in san jose. it broke out just before 230 this afternoon. five acres burned. you can see the fire came right up to a fence. there it is, but did not cause any damage to structures in the east bay. now, two fires this afternoon in pittsburgh are being treated as possible arson cases. one of the fires started at stoneman park in the area of bailey and leland roads. minutes later, a second fire sparked about a half mile away. police detained one suspect. the first fire started at the same location where a fire burned back on june 9th. at a live look outside tonight, you can see the fog that has rolled in and just about everyone is going to finally get some relief from the heat. meteorologist

sandhya patel is here now with a look at the hottest places in the bay area today and your 24 hour accuweather forecast. andy. yeah. dan, the 24 hour accuweather forecast is going to look very different from today. >> take a look at the temperatures right now. they're running lower than where they were yesterday. by nine degrees in san jose six degrees cooler right now in santa rosa. the marine layer is certainly playing a role now. while it was mild along the coast where the fog sat around, it was still hot inland, not as hot as yesterday, but 107. in fairfield, 104 degrees in concord, 92 in san jose. it's going to be a warm one inland tomorrow. not as hot as today. once again. so the heat advisory has been extended until 9 p.m. tomorrow for our inland areas. here's a look at what you can expect in the morning. gray and drizzly. 50s. 60s. partly cloudy at noontime, looking at breezy afternoon and certainly cooler than today. low 60s to mid 90s and then by the evening hours, mostly cloudy skies once again, 60s to the 80s. i'll be back with a full

qualified person to run for president. >> the president touting the resilient economy and defending his foreign policy record at times challenging reporters. >> have you seen a more successful conference? find me a world leader who didn't think it was still a growing number of congressional democrats continue to call on biden to drop out of the race. >> i have deep respect for president biden's five plus decades of public service and incredible appreciation for the work we've done together. these last three and a half years, but i believe the time has come for president biden to pass the torch. >> we're told that directly following the press conference, house minority leader hakeem jeffries met with the president in a letter to colleagues, jeffries says he expressed the full breadth of insight, heartfelt perspectives and conclusions about the path forward that the caucus has shared. jeffries did not say if he told biden to remain in the race or drop out today, the president met with both the congressional hispanic and asian pacific american caucuses this

massive data breach. at&t says most of its 110 million wireless subscribers call and text messages were compromised. the stolen data includes every number at&t customers called or texted, even customers or other wireless networks the number of times they interacted and the call duration. at&t has known since april that customer data was illegally downloaded, but only made the announcement today. >> i'm really wary of where my contact information is going and who has access to it, and so this is just really frustrating as a consumer. >> at&t says it does not believe the data is publicly available. the provider also says its understanding is that at least one person has been apprehended for the first time ever. cannabis is on sale legally at a state fair in the united states.

the historic moment was caught on video at the california state fair in sacramento. you can eat it, drink it or smoke it. organizers have been working for years to make this happen. there's a cannabis exhibit and it's recognized in the fair's golden bear agriculture awards. they say california has been a pioneer in cannabis cultivation, and it's time to recognize one of our premier crops. it was a very emotional day for alec baldwin in a courtroom in santa fe, new mexico, as the case against him was suddenly dismissed, the actor cried as the judge brought a sudden end to the involuntary manslaughter trial. the case was dismissed with prejudice, which means these charges cannot be filed again, the judge said. the decision was based on the misconduct of police and prosecutors over the withholding of evidence from the defense. >> we did everything humanly possible to bring justice uh- to helena and to her family, and we're proud of the work that we

did. uh- again, we disagree with the court's decision, but we have to respect it. >> baldwin was charged in the 2021 shooting death of cinematographer helena hutchins on the set of the film rust, actor matthew mcconaughey says he's once again considering a run for political office. there are no concrete plans on the horizon, but he spoke about his interest in a room full of governors today. they discussed how to counter extreme rhetoric and combativeness in government. mcconaughey is outspoken about practicing more respect across party lines, so we have to open that conversation with our opening statements and not invalidate a moderate or conservative view out of the gate. he is vague about his political affiliation, and says he's still learning whether politics would be a good fit for him in 2022. the actor teased a potential run for governor in his home state of texas, but decided not to enter the race. though there is speculation

tonight the point melody property will be sold to east bay regional park district. the 80 acre former navy site is located on the western shore of richmond. this $40 million deal puts the site on track to become a parkland, uh- most of the money will come from a state grant. half the proceeds will go to the tribe uh- guidiville rancheria of california, who had an agreement to develop a casino there. the decision comes from the new city council members, who decided to cut losses on several plans and not spend millions on development. cupertino has reached an agreement with vallco developers to waive $77 million in fees to help propel the city's largest ever housing development and move that forward. our media partner, the mercury news, reports. the developers will pay more than $10 million to fund infrastructure projects, as well as $32 million in other fees. the rise development at the former site of the shopping mall includes nearly 2700 housing units, nearly 900 of which would

be affordable to lower income families. the deal is expected to be finalized at next tuesday's city council meeting. new at 11. a real estate record in san francisco. laurene powell jobs, the widow of apple founder steve jobs, has purchased a home in pacific heights for drum roll. please $70 million. it's a mansion on broadway in the pacific heights neighborhood, and it was never officially listed for sale. reportedly, the owners had sought $100 million. the previous record in san francisco was 43.5 million. that was in 2021 for another park heights property, but 70 million bucks. all right, let's go back and talk more about the weather forecast as we hit the weekend and the week ahead as well. meteorologist sandhya patel is back. sandhya so nice to hear it's going to cool off. >> it is indeed. and today temperatures started to drop down. we're going to keep that going as we hit the weekend. let me show you some live pictures

right now from our tower cameras, and you will notice one thing is in common, which is the marine layer. it's about 1300ft deep, and it's certainly making for some murky views. here's a look at what you can expect. today's high temperatures compared to tomorrow. santa rosa. you're going to drop by 13 degrees from 99 to 86. you'll notice it when you're 104, in concord, and you're coming down to 92 degrees. so 12 degrees cooler. san francisco, oakland, only a couple of degrees, san jose from 92 to 89, 3 degrees drop. and the reason for this is high pressure is going to start to shift off to the east. this area of low pressure is beginning to take over, which is what is drawing in our cooler air. i do want to show you some warnings that are up for around the state. the sierra red flag warning going up, fire weather watch for parts of northern and southern california. the reason for this is we've already seen the monsoon moisture and thunderstorms over the sierra today. around that high tomorrow. here are the areas that have a risk of lightning.

and this is dry lightning. some of it could be wet, but the dry lightning is the concern as to why the fire danger will be elevated. we have a slight risk here, but it's like 5 to 15% chance. just remain aware on live doppler seven you can certainly see the marine layer. also, some high level clouds overhead as we're just getting some of that moisture coming in our direction in the form of clouds. visibility is low right now in half moon bay down to three quarters of a mile. watch out for that fog. temperatures right now 50s to the 80s as we look at a live picture from exploratorium, you can see the gray skies overnight tonight. mix of fog and clouds for the weekend forecast. we're looking at a cooling trend to continue and early next week near average temperatures. so we go hour by hour tomorrow morning, beginning with some mist drizzle along the coast. a lot of cloud cover, both low and high. and then in the sierra you see those thunderstorms developing in the early afternoon, continuing into the middle to latter part of the evening hours. that's the concern here. so just keep that in mind if you are traveling up

there. temperature is 50 to 70 in the morning. the heaviest cloud cover and fog is near the coast. partly cloudy elsewhere tomorrow afternoon. 89 in san jose, 91 in morgan hill in the south bay on the peninsula. you're looking at 81. in redwood city, 60 two half moon bay. these temperatures coming down 65 in downtown san francisco, north bay number is 83, san rafael, 86, in santa rosa, 82, in vallejo, heading into the east bay 73, oakland 83 castro valley inland areas. you're out of the triple digits. 94 in livermore, 92 degrees in concord, 90 in san ramon. the accuweather seven day forecast. it is going to be breezy and cooler tomorrow. temperatures continue to trend lower sunday, monday, tuesday, dropping down to the upper 80s inland, which is where you should be 60s coast side. and then if you do like the warm weather, dan, those numbers will slowly start to rise midweek. and by friday we're talking about the return of heat. but at least it's not excessive. we're talking about
