really did believe that. what actually happened until we recognized his house and his vehicle, and we started putting two and two together. >> now, at six, shock and disbelief. that's the reaction from a coworker of the man accused of killing his family in alameda. the suspect, appearing before a judge for the first time and passengers rushed to get off a plane moments before takeoff. what's to blame for smoke filling up this cabin? plus real estate record? who now owns san francisco's most expensive home? good morning everybody. it's saturday, july 13th. let's get right to the weather. lisa is here with more on a possible break coming our way. >> you just have to look out the window and you know it. in fact, yesterday that sea breeze kicked up. but we still have an advisory for the upper elevations. the hills of the north and east bay, also above san jose. so that's where you still could have the risk of heat related illnesses through about 9:00 tonight, as the temperatures there are still

quite warm in the 80s and 90s. no, spare the air alert, but notice the moderate air quality from the east bay to the south bay and the lightning strikes in the central valley there. so a concern, perhaps for the sierra nevada. but as we look outside here, it is gray. we're going to see mostly cloudy skies throughout the morning hours. 54 downtown, 58in oakland, 60 in hayward with a mild 66 in san jose from okay across the bay. lots of cloud cover here. 54 santa rosa. it is 65 by the delta so that south wind up to 32 miles an hour cooling off our inland valleys already 3 to 4 degrees cooler there. and the forecast for today along the coast. cloudy, low 60s, bayside, 60s to mid 70s. so much more comfortable. mostly cloudy, partly cloudy throughout the afternoon for some of you with mid 80s to low 90s in our inland valleys. stephanie. >> lisa. thank you new details about the man accused of killing four of his family members in their alameda home on wednesday night. shane killian was arraigned in court and is now

being charged with several felonies. abc seven news reporter tim johns spoke with one of killian's coworkers, and he also looked into another incident in north carolina. >> these photographs show shane killian being arraigned in an oakland courthouse friday afternoon. the 54 year old killian is charged with multiple felonies after he allegedly shot and killed his wife, his in-laws and his six year old son at their house in alameda wednesday night. he's also accused of shooting his one year old child, who remains in critical condition. michael saxby worked with killian at the martinez refinery. saxby tells me he and some of his colleagues showed up in court friday afternoon and we saw him, but he never really looked at us, so he didn't acknowledge that we were there, saxby says. killian was at work on wednesday before the shootings took place. he says while he had a few personality quirks, no one thought he was capable of the things he's alleged to have done. >> nothing really happened on the job that anyone felt was something that would have just set a guy off to make him take

off. >> killian does have a criminal past, however. police records show that back in 2011, he served 60 days in jail for misdemeanor assault on a police officer in north carolina. the incident involved a gun at a gas station, as well as a high speed chase with speeds up to 125 miles an hour. assistant chief ryan cunningham works at the police department in the city where that took place. >> for any law enforcement agency as a whole, this is a very serious and a dangerous situation, cunningham says. >> while he doesn't remember many specific details about killian, the news of the shootings in alameda has shocked his department in murphy, north carolina. it's just the tragedy and you know, you can only hope and pray for the families and the neighbors in that area and the law enforcement that's involved, no matter the amount of training that we've had, doesn't prepare you to respond to an incident like this. a sense of disbelief also felt by saxby and his coworkers here in the bay area. >> two, we really didn't believe that what actually happened until we recognized his house and his vehicle, and we started

putting two and two together. >> a motor for wednesday night shootings is still unclear. in alameda, tim johns abc seven news fremont police are trying to find a missing three year old girl whose father died yesterday. >> he was found in san francisco. authorities say ellie lorenzo was last seen thursday at 6 p.m. with her father in fremont. he was supposed to return the toddler to her mother yesterday. you see her picture here? she's three feet, six inches tall and weighs about 45 pounds. ellie's mother made this emotional plea. >> ellie, i love you so much. please. looking for you, and we're going to find you. so please just hold on and everything will be okay. >> police are trying to retrace the father's footsteps and are now looking at surveillance video in the areas. anyone with information on ellie's whereabouts is asked to call fremont police. developing news out of san francisco

international airport. passengers scrambled to evacuate from an american airlines flight as smoke filled the cabin. it happened right before the plane took off for miami. >> off the aircraft. do not get your belongings. >> you can hear the chaotic moments there. the smoke came from a laptop battery that caught fire. everyone got off, but three people were injured. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez spoke to experts about what they say is now a growing problem. go forward, go forward. frantic moments captured from the san francisco international airport during an emergency evacuation. >> we got a mayday, mayday, mayday. there's a fire in the back of the aircraft. start the fire rescue. >> that fire, official said came from a laptop battery inside a passenger's bag. yang yong chi boarded the miami bound flight with his family around one friday afternoon. >> when we got in the back of

the plane, we already started to smell something that smelled like burnt cables. >> yong kai was seated next to his father. the laptop belonged to the passenger sitting behind them. >> it was just like a massive flame out of nowhere. >> the american airlines flight crew reported a fire in the cabin. passengers used emergency slides and the jet bridge to exit. go forward. yo this two minute and 33 second long video of the evacuation that didn't go as fast as he hoped. >> oh my god. so many people took their bags. so many people just took the bags out of the overhead compartment. i was also screaming at one point, just leave your bags and get out. >> sfo authorities said three people were injured while evacuating the plane. we spoke with aviation analyst john nance. >> it's also extremely serious to call for an emergency evacuation because we're going to hurt a few people, not usually seriously on a smaller airplane, but still people go

down slides the wrong way. >> sky seven captured the moment officials dipped the laptop in a bin of water. when it comes to lithium battery fires on airlines. when former pilot and now consultant said it happens more than we think. >> the faa says that it's a it occurs about once a week and there's a 42% increase in these incidents in the last five years, probably because everyone has electronic devices. >> american airlines issued a statement, we thank our crew members for their professionalism and apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. yang kai was relieved the fire didn't break out during the six hour flight. >> i mean, i'm feeling great. i mean, i'm alive. that's probably the best thing that i could have happened today. >> this was his first trip to the u.s. and a memorable one. >> we still have four more days. i don't know what what can go wrong at this point. but to finish it like that, it's kind of crazy. >> in the south bay, lauren martinez, abc seven news in the

east bay, two fires in pittsburg are being investigated as a possible arson case. one of the fires started yesterday at stoneman park in the area of bailey and leland roads. minutes later, a second fire sparked about a half mile away. police detained one suspect. the first fire started at the same location where another fire burned back on june 9th. all right, let's check in with lisa on conditions today. good morning. >> good morning. it is certainly an about face from where we were, you know, the other day. and only some of you had the breeze yesterday a look at can you make out alcatraz. here we have a deeper marine layer and the breeze has kicked up also extra cloud cover. big cool down today on the way tomorrow and for the week ahead. part of it anyway, stay tuned. my accuweather seven day forecast is next. lisa thank you. >> also ahead, residents think they have a way to stop sideshows from happening in their neighborhood. why? some san francisco leaders say that

saturday morning. it's 611 in san francisco. there's a new effort to stop the sideshows that keep happening across the city. residents near california and divisadero streets are hoping speed bumps will deter the activity. abc seven news reporter luz pena spoke with people who have been waiting for a solution for years. >> stunt driving or sideshows is happening across the bay area. just three weeks ago, traffic on the bay bridge came to a stop because of a sideshow. overnight, a scene residents on california and divisadero streets are familiar with. this

is not a bridge, but the tire marks tell a story of a neighborhood that has been crying out for help. >> all the cars and bikes running around at like 1 a.m. 2 a.m. wake everyone up after multiple years waiting for a solution. >> this week the city installed speed bumps, hoping this will stop the sideshows that torment this neighborhood. this worker who did not want to be identified, said they constantly come back to work. the morning after a sideshow to graffiti on their walls. >> the first thing you can see, because you have to cross the streets. the walls where i work vandalized. >> they're hoping the speed bumps will make a difference. >> i'm a fan. if it's going to stop these sideshows in 2020, supervisor asha safai introduced legislation to combat sideshows in san francisco. >> it allowed sfpd to impound vehicles for 14 days after the first offense. after the second offense and even stronger penalty. >> you're involved in stunt driving in san francisco. we're taking your car for 30 days.

>> our abc seven news data team looked into the latest incident reports and found that since january, there have been 24 stunt driving incidents reported in the city and 11 just last month, according to supervisor safai, not many cars have been impounded. multiple sideshows in san francisco this year, and only five cars have been impounded. >> only five to date. and last year in 2023, only six. >> if this legislation is not stopping them, then what can? we spoke to oakland council member noel gayo. oakland has been fighting sideshows for years, so what is working for them in the neighborhoods? >> uh- the planter boxes, cement boxes, the trees that neighbors have planning does deter the sideshows from coming into our neighborhood streets. >> his message to san francisco. >> you know, it's worth the try. >> luz pena, abc seven news. >> supervisor safai says he's concerned speed bumps will move. sideshows to another san

francisco neighborhood and not actually fix the problem. he is urging sfpd to enforce that legislation in the east bay. the point molate property will be sold to the east bay regional park district. the 80 acre former navy site is located on the western shore of richmond. this $40 million deal puts the site on track to becoming a parkland. most of that money will come from a state grant. half of the proceeds will go to a tribe that had an agreement to develop a casino there. the decision comes from new city council members. they decided to cut losses on several plans and not spend millions of dollars on new development. cupertino is working with vallco developers to waive $77 million in fees. it will help propel the city's largest ever housing development forward. our media partner is the mercury news reports. the developers will pay more than $10 million to fund infrastructure projects, as well

as $32 million in other fees. the rise development will be at the former site of the shopping mall. it includes nearly 2700 housing units, nearly 900 of those would be affordable to lower income families. the deal is expected to be finalized at next tuesday's city council meeting. for the first time ever, cannabis is on sale legally at the state fair in the u.s, the historic moment was caught on video at the california state fair in sacramento. you can eat it, drink it or smoke it, and organizers have been working for years now to make that happen. a cannabis exhibit is recognized in the fair's golden bear agricultural awards. they say california has been a pioneer in cannabis cultivation, and it's time to recognize one of our premier crops. now to a big unveiling here in san francisco. we got a sneak peek at the zero emissions passenger ferry that will cruise through the bay. you're looking at sea change.

it's the world's first commercial passenger ferry, powered 100% by zero emission hydrogen fuel cells. the 70 foot catamaran fits up to 75 people. the state is now requiring all short distance ferries to be emissions free by the end of 2025. >> it's just appropriate that san francisco, which is a leader in so many things and especially when it comes to the environment, is a leader in making sure that ferries become clean, because i think that was the one criticism of water transit. it was that it was polluting. >> starting july 19th, sea change will run for free for six months, so you can check it out. that's not the only change coming as well. the angel island tiburon ferry company has signed an agreement with a company from new zealand. it will design and build a new vessel as the company prepares to convert its boat fleet to fully electric. happening today, the stadium style catamaran race called

sailgp is set to carve the choppy bay waters of san francisco. it's the series 14th and final event, with $2 million in prize money at stake. the f50 foiling catamaran is the first boat to hit 50 knots, or 57.5mph, during a race. tickets are available, including waterfront seats at sailgp, .com and hopefully the breeze works in their favor today. speaking of, let's check in with lisa on what to expect. as we talked earlier, it is. it's calming to watch them out on the water right from from shore. >> they're not not up like that. >> but then when you're on the boat it's like, oh, totally different story, right? >> and that 5657 degree water temperature. yeah. they know all about that. yeah. yeah certainly the breeze will be there and some cloud cover in the form of a marine layer. but we also have mid and high level clouds. you can see that ■system moving up from the south. and that will allow for that dry lightning to infiltrate parts of the mountains there. the southern sierra, the northern sierra

unfortunately hopefully no fires with that. but for the bay area we are looking at extra cloud cover, mount tam somewhat colorful there and temperatures have really cooled off. that started yesterday. it is 54 half moon bay, 60, in hayward. good morning san jose 66. everyone is cloudy and we are looking at that southwest wind gusting to over 30 miles an hour. so the view from our east bay hills camera looking out towards what you can barely see the east bay valleys. and that's because that marine layer has grown much deeper. it's dense at the coast, so some visibility issues there. 54 santa rosa. it is in the 60s pretty much in our inland valleys, but these numbers are coming down this morning. they came down yesterday. so the coastal fog with patchy dense spots this morning and a lot of cloud cover beginning to thin out throughout the afternoon. but we get our cooling trend over the weekend. it continues into next week with temperatures near or a bit below average for the first and middle part of the workweek. so here's a look at

all that cloud cover moving up from the south. we have a south surface wind, and so that's pulling up that extra cloud cover. eventually it will work to help our air quality. and then by the second half of the weekend we'll see the clouds really banked up along the coast and more sun. so a couple things going on with that system linking up with another one to the north of us. there's a look at that wind. it gets a little bit more robust throughout the afternoon and through the delta here. so temperatures today barely in the mid 90s in our inland valleys. and then once again for our sunday we're getting back into that surface southerly flow. and that allows for that cooler air of the fog to stay put. here's a look at what you can expect for next week. this is wednesday where we've got a pretty nice day again with the afternoon sun, morning fog, 60s and 70s from the coast to the bay and then inland. there will top out in the 90s. but as we get to your thursday, the temperatures coming up just a little bit and we'll see 70s and still that cool air from the shoreline, but

asking for an increase amid other companies denying insurance to certain california homeowners, wildfires and the rising cost of building materials are the main reasons allstate is pursuing this increase. and for many homeowners, it's becoming difficult to find any insurance. >> we have shopped around. it's not for the best rate. it's for anybody who will insure us. >> yeah, that is the reality for so many across the bay area. allstate stopped writing new california homeowner insurance policies in november of 2022, and last year the company got approval for a 4% rate hike. a final decision about the most recent price hike is still under review in san francisco. laurene powell jobs, the widow of apple founder steve jobs, bought a home in pacific heights for get this $70 million. it's a mansion on broadway and it was never officially listed for sale. the owner is reportedly sought $100 million for the home. the previous record in san francisco

crucial meetings this morning as former president trump hits the campaign trail. good morning everybody. thank you for being with us this half hour. first, meteorologist lisa argen has a look at the forecast. good morning lisa. hi stephanie. >> good morning. hi everyone. we are certainly foggy out there and cloudy around the bay because the winds really picked up yesterday. enhancing that marine layer and a system to the south of us allowing for those clouds. but aren't we done with this map yet? almost. this is for the higher elevations of the north bay and the east bay, where we still have an advisory where temperatures will be in the 80s and 90s, but that's above about 1800 feet. air quality is moderate. we have a surface south wind that will allow for not only the fog to stay put. we'll see some extra cloud cover. what a neat shot there, right? in business. commerce on the bay there 54, san francisco 60. in hayward we are in the mid 50s, half moon bay. and look at all the fog right by the airport. 54 santa rosa, low to mid 60s. and our

inland valleys. so that is 3 to 4 degrees cooler on our way to a cooler, cloudier afternoon about 2:00. we're in the upper 80s to near 90 inland 70s around the bay. fog doesn't clear the coast, and we're only in the low 90s inland for the afternoon. 70s around the bay. stephanie. >> lisa, thank you. this morning, president biden is meeting with democratic congressional leaders. he's trying to shore up support as several lawmakers in his own party call for him to drop out of the race. abc news reporter alison kosik has his latest push to fire up voters as doubt looms around his reelection bid. >> president biden hit the campaign trail friday, speaking to supporters in detroit. the president continuing to convince voters he's up for the job. i'm the nominee of the democratic party and the only democrat or republican who has beaten donald trump ever. >> and i'm going to beat him again. i know him

is a loser. >> biden keeping up the momentum after a solo press conference thursday night following the nato summit in washington. still a growing number of democrats continue to call on biden to drop out of the race friday evening. representative mike levin, joining the group. >> i have deep respect for president biden's five plus decades of public service and incredible appreciation for the work we've done together. these last three and a half years, but i believe the time has come for president biden to pass the torch in an effort to reassure lawmakers, biden met with both the congressional hispanic and asian pacific american caucuses friday. >> this weekend, he's expected to meet with the progressive caucus. alison kosik, abc news, new york bay area congressman john garamendi is among the democrats sticking with biden. >> he joined us on our 3 p.m.

show getting answers. he called the reaction to biden's debate stumbles a feeding frenzy. >> now that we're in this situation is, oh my, my, my, maybe i got a chance to be president after all without having gone through the primaries and proving themselves. the fact of the matter is that biden went through the primaries and he was not challenged. and there was opportunity after opportunity for anybody to do so. now, going forward, going forward, we have a president who has proven that he can govern. >> on cnn, representative garamendi called for an end to the infighting within the democratic party. a new poll shows the race is still incredibly close. the marist national poll survey found 50% of voters say if the election happened today, they'd still vote for president biden. the same percentage also said they would vote for vice president kamala harris or governor gavin

newsom. several other polls over the last two weeks had president trump leading biden by up to three points. new this morning at least 20 people died and dozens more are hurt after a strike in the khan yunis area of gaza. the strike reportedly hit an area where displaced people were sheltering. video shows rescue teams and civilians trying to save others trapped underneath the rubble. israeli officials say the idf was targeting a top hamas military official and had carried out an airstrike this morning. it's not known if the strikes are related. well, it was an emotional day for alec baldwin in new mexico as the case against him was dismissed. the actor cried as the judge brought a sudden end to the involuntary manslaughter trial. the case was dismissed with prejudice. that means these charges cannot be filed again, the judge said. the decision was based on the misconduct of police and prosecutors over the withholding of evidence from the defense. >> we did everything humanly

possible to bring justice uh- to helena and to her family, and we're proud of the work that we did. again, we disagree with the court's decision, but we have to respect it. >> baldwin was charged in the 2021 shooting death of cinematographer helena hutchins on the set of the film rust closer to home, now vacaville police officer matthew bowen is being remembered as a funny, strong leader. he was hit and killed by a woman accused of dui thursday, according to investigators, bowen's motorcycle was hit from behind while he was conducting a traffic stop at leisure town road in orange drive. the driver faces homicide and dui charges. bowen joined vacaville pd in june of last year, previously serving in concord. officer daniel gallegos worked with bowen there. he says they joined the force around the same time. >> this job isn't easy. the things we have to kind of go

and the contributions of its black pioneers. that includes many who came to the area during world war two to work in the shipyards. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke to the founder about what the exhibit means to her. >> it is a california black history story. it is a national story. >> marin city resident felicia gaston is preserving the rich history of her community. the only way she knows how, by creating an exhibit for all to see at the marin county library. >> what i like about it is that whatever area you live in, you can come and get a taste of it through a partnership with the library, gaston's archive collection is now on display at all ten branches, highlighting the history of black pioneers who came to marin city in the 1940s to build ships for the war effort. they came out to build a better life for themselves and their families. they were leaving the jim crow south, but when they came here, they all helped build these 93 ships. >> what we love is really, i

think, celebrating those hometown heroes. i mean, the history of what, you know, families, individuals had to endure. and coming from the south to marin city for a better life. >> pictures, artifacts and newspaper clippings tell the story of strength and struggle during the height of world war two, about 6000 people were living here in marin city, many of them black. some faced racism and segregation at the nearby shipyards, but welder joseph james fillled, a civil rights lawsuit and one during the early 40s, the boilermakers wanted all the blacks to be in a separate union, and joseph james was like, oh no, we're not here to be in the jim crow, in the shipyards. >> we're all working for the same cause. >> it's history that many in marin and across the bay area only thought they knew felicia and lorna hope visitors take the entire journey called the legacy of marin city, a california black history story. >> really? a touch point again for families, adults and the community to travel from branch

going to take a while for those to thin out. right now temperatures are in the mid 50s from half moon bay to san francisco. it's 58 in oakland, 60 in hayward, 66. in san jose. it's been pretty mild in the morning hours. things are changing, though. we're getting back to where we should be for this time of year. after extensive heat wave, which was, by the way, record breaking in the state of california, how hot we got for july and some days back in late june, 54, in santa rosa, it's 58 in napa with low to mid 60s for concord and livermore. already that south wind working to cool things off. it was 70 earlier of past couple of hours and the temperatures have dropped dramatically with wind gusts through the delta. so coastal dense fog this morning, the weekend cooling trend with the extra cloud cover today and then into next week. we have near average temperatures each and every day with morning low clouds and fog. and this morning we have the combination of the low clouds, the fog and that system to the south there. so that's why we'll see. partly to mostly cloudy conditions. you wake up into your sunday. little

has changed there in terms of the sky cover until sunday afternoon. then you see the clouds where they usually are from point reyes, down through davenport, and then the sunny afternoon. so surface winds out of the south, dragging up some of that smoke from all the fires to the south of us. and then eventually, when those south winds will be taken over by more of an onshore flow, we'll begin to see the south winds and the westerly winds push that fog, or i should say, that haze out of the atmosphere. here's a look at the middle of next week, where we see temperatures coming up into the low 90s. pretty typical with 60s and 70s across the bay and some mid 80s comfortable weather for inland valleys. then by thursday we start to crank things up a little bit. temperatures above average here, getting a little bit warmer closer to the bay and then into friday. this is definitely the warmest day. we'll see some mid 90s in our inland valleys, and even getting to near 80 around oakland, 70 san francisco. so partly cloudy out there. 73 in
