pennsylvania as gunfire rings out at former president trump's rally. the secret service rushing to protect him. >> we just heard like a bullet. you just seen him, like, swipe his ear there, you know? then next thing you know, you heard other bullets and he fell. >> the former president says he was shot in the ear. he's expected to be fine. those who were at the rally found themselves scrambling to get ou. president biden says he reached out to trump and condemned the violence. >> there's no place in america for this kind of violence. it's sick. it's sick. >> good evening. i'm j.r. stone, thanks for joining us. here's what we know at this hour. the former president is safe and in good spirits and has set his sights on the upcoming republican national convention in milwaukee. officials say the gunman fired as many as eight

shots before being killed by the secret service. the fbi has identified him as 20 year old thomas matthew crooks of bethel park, pennsylvania, a suburb south of pittsburgh. a bystander was also killed, and two other people at the rally were injured and are said to be in critical condition. the fbi is in charge of the investigation, with several other agencies involved, and this is being looked at as an assassination attempt. the former president returned home a short time ago. this is video of him getting off of his plane in newark, new jersey this evening. we begin our coverage tonight with abc news reporter perry russom. >> take a look at what happened, new information on what's being investigated as an assassination attempt on former president trump. >> the secret service says a shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside the rally venue in butler county, pennsylvania, north of pittsburgh. the secret service says their team neutralized the shooter, who is now dead. officials holding a briefing

hours after the shooting. >> this evening. we had what we're calling an assassination attempt against our former president, donald trump. and at this time, we are not prepared to identify who the shooter is. >> law enforcement sources tell abc news the shooter fired as many as eight rounds using an ar style rifle from a rooftop 200 to 300 yards away tonight, trump releasing a statement that reads in part i was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. i knew immediately that something was wrong and that it heard a whizzing sound shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. >> first you think like maybe firecrackers, but it continued. it continued. and then somebody yelled, get down! we got down, we got down and we huddled and we started praying. >> the shooting happening minutes into trump's rally, trump on stage, reaching for his right ear, then apparently ducking behind the podium. secret service agents rushing the former president. moments later, trump taken to his feet with blood on his right ear, trump waving a fist in the air as he's led off the stage

surrounded by secret service agents. this is happening ahead of a major week for trump. the republican national convention in milwaukee. >> there's no place in america for this kind of violence. it's sick. it's sick. it's one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. we cannot allow for this to be happening. we cannot be like this. we cannot condone this. >> perry russom, abc news, milwaukee. >> what went wrong? that will be the focus of what will be a sweeping federal government investigation into today's attempt on former president trump's life. cory allen of alameda is a former u.s. secret service agent who protected president obama and his family. he was very forthright about what happened today. >> there was a there was a lapse in security, something something was missed or something went behind. after the sweeps were done. and somehow somebody gained access to it with a weapon, allen told us protecting a president and a former president involves not only the secret service, but also local and state police, multiple

security sweeps are performed. >> he defended his former agency, which he called the best in the world. >> they're safe and these agents do a stellar job, and they are the best at what they do in the world, period. people come to them to get trained for their expertise and the foreign dignitaries that come in and out of the country constantly, and you never hear a peep about it. it's because they do a stellar job and they will continue doing a great job, and there will be lessons learned from this. there has to be, he says. >> what happened today was unfathomable, considering how good the secret service is at their jobs. this is a live look at milwaukee tonight, where the republican national convention is supposed to begin on monday. a welcome event was scheduled for tonight, but canceled. the calendar does show a number of events scheduled for tomorrow. it is not clear if they will go on as planned, and if any changes will be made to the convention. the president's campaign team says he will still appear at the convention this week. it is supposed to run through thursday. former house speaker nancy pelosi is reacting

tonight, referencing the attack on her husband at their home in san francisco. she said, quote, as one whose family has been the victim of political violence, i know firsthand that political violence of any kind has no place in our society. i thank god that former president trump is safe. as we learn more details about this horrifying incident, let us pray that all those in attendance at the former president's rally today are unharmed, and california governor gavin newsom also reacting, saying, quote, violence has no place in our democracy. my thoughts are with president trump and everyone impacted at the rally today. reaction is pouring in from all over and from both sides of the political aisle. abc seven news reporter anser hassan talked to local leaders and experts to get their assessment of today's shocking events. joins us live from the newsroom with more. >> unser jr. good evening, bay area elected officials have been condemning the attempted assassination of president trump, calling an end for any to

any and all forms of political violence. while bay area trump supporters are rallying around the former president, people on both sides raising concerns about political rhetoric. >> violence has never been the answer. violence is not the answer. violence will never be the answer. >> bay area congressman eric swalwell, himself a victim of political threats reaching across the political divide, condemning what appears to be an attempt to assassinate former president donald trump and warning against threats of retaliation to anyone who is seeking to use this for any political benefit. >> i urge you not to do that, that unity must be our antidote in a moment like this, desperation. >> this is a desperation move. it's very tragic. lisa drisko is a moraga resident and longtime trump loyalist who has organized rallies at the overpass in lafayette. >> she sees the shooting as an outcome of an escalation in political polarization.

>> as president trump was walking off the platform, he put his fist up and said, fight. and that's exactly we need to fight in the political realm. not with bullets, not with fists. >> there's been a build to something like this for some time. >> john dennis, chairman of the san francisco republican party, says he has had made threats against him as well. he's calling on both sides to forcefully condemn what happened and critical of how democrats have portrayed the former president. >> the fine people hoax, the russia hoax, the, you know, the bleach hoax, all this nonsense and basically call him a dictator in waiting. despite the fact that he, you know, served as the as the president of the united states. we need to cut that back. >> melinda jackson is professor of political science at san jose state university. she says political polarization has been leading to political demonization for years. >> he has the best security in the world surrounding him. so the fact that someone was able

to take a shot, at president trump, at a political rally is pretty, surprising and disturbing for sure. she points to the attacks on nancy pelosi's husband and the attempted kidnaping of michigan governor gretchen whitmer as other examples of escalating violence, but she thinks it's too early to determine what political impact there may be, especially with undecided voters. he has a history, certainly, of, sometimes, you know, violent rhetoric or rhetoric that seems to support violence. and if that happens, then i think some voters could certainly be turned off. >> tomorrow morning, trump supporters will hold a day long rally at the overpass highway 24 in lafayette. they say it's in support of president trump and free speech in the newsroom. anser hassan abc seven news. >> answer. thank you so much. shootings involving politicians and candidates in the united states are quite rare. the most

recent one prior to today was congressman steve scalise of louisiana. he was shot and severely injured during a practice for the congressional baseball game in july of 2017. the gunman was shot and killed by police at the scene. scalise would return to congress in september of that year. he posted this on social media, quote, praying for president donald trump. there is never any place for political violence before that. in 2011, arizona congresswoman gabby giffords was shot during a public event. six people died in the incident. the shooting left giffords permanently injured and she would resign from congress the following year to focus on her recovery. she has gone to become a vocal proponent of gun control and anti-gun violence causes. the shooter pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life plus 140 years in federal prison. giffords posted this to ex. political violence is terrifying. i know i'm holding

she did not return from a scheduled visit with her father. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has a message shared by ellie's heartbroken family. >> a south bay family is remembering a little girl who they say spread joy everywhere she went. the death of three year old ellie lorenzo was confirmed by her family, who shared this message. we are heartbroken at the loss of our dear, sweet ellie. she was the most charming, funny, smart, friendly little girl we wanted to extend our thanks to the community at large in their support through the search for ellie, ellie, lorenzo lived in mountain view. her mother, crystal obi, said she was last seen thursday when the toddler left for a scheduled visit with her father in fremont, but never returned. obi, making this emotional plea. >> ellie, i love you so much. please please know that we're looking for you and we're going to find you. >> police say ellie's father was found dead in san francisco on

friday. investigators say the body of a toddler resembling ellie was found in san jose. according to bay city news, that discovery happening at a recycling facility on saturday morning, police say a motive for the crime is unknown. fremont police were at the casa arroyo apartments on saturday where it's believed ellie's father lived. officers were seen entering a unit at the complex. neighbors learning about the tragic news death of a child who's been missing. >> well, i mean, my typical reaction is disgust. >> fremont police asking the community for patience while they continue to investigate the tragic death of a little girl in fremont. cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> in the east bay. it's the last day in business for a casper's hot dogs location in downtown hayward. for the last 75 years, the building on c street has been hard to miss. the family owned bay area hot dog chain is consolidating locations, shutting down its

light, except over in the delta area where we've got some gusts up to about 23mph. rio vista and the temperature temperature change over the last 24 hours shows most inland areas several degrees cooler than at this time last night, but closer to the coast and the bay, it's a few degrees milder. so here's the view from emeryville. looking back along the bay bridge, current temperature readings starting in san francisco are 58 degrees low 60s at oakland and hayward. upper 60s at san jose and redwood city, 57 at half moon bay, and at the golden gate right now the fog has lifted, but it will be back overnight. we have a mid to upper 50s at petaluma and santa rosa, 62 at napa, upper 60s at fairfield and concord, 70 degrees right now at livermore. and these are our forecast headlines for the remainder of the weekend, which basically is tomorrow. the cooling trend continues for the week ahead. we'll have near average temperatures under bright, mainly sunny skies. and then next weekend, also under sunny skies, we'll see inland heat returning, but probably not up in the triple digit range. so the forecast animation overnight shows lots of clouds passing

over, mainly mid and high level clouds and it will start to drizzle. pockets of drizzle offshore mainly, but after about 5 a.m. or so we'll see some of that drizzle moving onshore. so there may be some wet spots in the early morning hours, but the showers or the drizzle won't be very widespread. and we're not talking about measurable rainfall overnight lows will be generally in the upper 50s to low 60s and highs tomorrow. low 60s at the coast, mid to upper 70s around the bay shoreline, inland areas that for many days have been in the triple digits. tomorrow will be in the upper 80s to just a few low 90s. so comfortably warm weather is certainly coming back our way. here's the accuweather seven day forecast, and after a few low to mid 90s inland tomorrow, look at the week ahead. we're talking about inland highs upper 80s to maybe 90 degrees monday through thursday. so certainly a nice pleasantly warm string of days there. but then on friday and saturday it starts to get warmer. we'll see inland highs in the mid 90s upper 70s to about 80 around the bay

today's attempt on former president donald trump's life at a campaign rally in pennsylvania. tonight, the fbi is calling the shooting an assassination attempt. the suspect behind the shooting was killed by the secret service. he has been identified as 20 year old thomas matthew crooks of bethel park, pennsylvania. law

enforcement sources tell abc news they believe he was acting as a lone wolf. he was armed with an ar 15 and fired as many as eight rounds. one spectator in the crowd was killed. two others who were wounded are in the hospital in critical condition. let's hear from the fbi, who spoke a few hours ago about the shooter. >> we are close to that identification, and as soon as we are 100% confident in who that individual is, we will share it with the press. with that being said, also, we do not currently have an identified motive, although our investigators are working tirelessly to attempt to identify what that motive was. >> tonight, former president trump has left pennsylvania and has returned to bedminster, new jersey. this is the motorcade brought that brought him to the airport with extra officers providing the escort. president biden has spoken with trump. mr.

biden has cut short a weekend in delaware and has returned to the white house in the last couple of hours. the political world is reeling from this. i talked to nolan higdon at csu east bay, who is a political science lecturer, about the impact of seeing this possible attack on a former president. >> i think i have the reaction that a lot of folks have in the united states right now, which is a mix of fear and confusion and concern and i think it's really critically important to mention in these very hyper polarized times in which we liv, that the party of the victim or the shooter at this point is irrelevant. it's always a big problem for your democracy when people decide to determine electoral politics through the use of violence, it's against the concepts of democracy. and so i think for those who care about democracy, regardless of which party you identify with or if you don't have a party, it's really important to remember

this type of behavior is just not something that a democracy can withstand, nor should it tolerate. >> the tension out there just seems so high. even, you know, after this incident happened today and after we see those images with uh- donald trump seemingly having blood on his ear, you know, you read some of the comments online and it's just it's vicious, despite some of what we've seen talk about the tension out there right now, >> you know, i would to those folks who are engaging in, you know, celebration of what just happened or at least making a joke of it. i would remind them that the whole reason we have not the whole reason, but one of the reasons we have a democracy is because too often in human history, we decided things with might makes right, that is where it was the most, you know, powerful and could use violence to attain power. earned power. the idea behind democracy is no. the people should decide the electoral process. a peaceful, transparent electoral process should decide. and there's

nothing, in my estimation, as someone who loves democracy, in my estimation, there's nothing funny or good about this. this is bad for everybody and not just, you know, republicans who have to worry that their candidate, you know, nearly missed death from all indications, but across the nation, this is not good. this is not a way to behave in a democracy in our nation's history. >> more than a dozen presidents, former presidents and candidates for president have been attacked. the list includes abraham lincoln, who was the first president to die by assassination in 1865. former president theodore roosevelt was shot in the chest when he was on his way to make a speech for his 1912 campaign to get his old job back, john f kennedy was shot and killed by a sniper in dallas in 1963. his brother, robert f kennedy, was a presidential candidate in 1968 when he was shot and killed in los angeles the night he won the california

came giant fans used to cool the ev equipment. >> we didn't know what it was until it started spinning and we started hearing this really loud. hum. so our reaction was really negative. like, we hope this is temporary. >> neighbors say it's been there around 6 to 9 months now, making it hard to work or even sleep. we're testing the decibel rating right outside your apartment, and it says it's 70. >> yes, it's crazy to put that in perspective, according to san francisco's noise and sound code, anything over 50 to 60db is past the acceptable noise limit outside a residential property that's assuming ambient noise is at a certain level. it's like 24 over seven and stuff. >> we checked all areas inside wilma's house and found the decibel reading was over the required limit on each floor and room of her home, reaching decibels in the high 50s to the high 60s. electrify america sent

us the following statement, saying, while our charging station meets all the city permit requirements, we have tried several options to mitigate the complaint of one resident regarding fan noise. >> electrify america told us they had fixed the problem. they had not. they didn't even attempt to fix the problem. they just let two days pass and turned it back on, electrify america added they're exploring an option of relocating the fan exhaust, but that requires a new permit and review. >> are you considering moving? >> oh, i'm actually considering after my leasing. >> it's a permanent thing that is going 24 over seven. that is driving everybody crazy. >> stephanie sierra, abc seven news joined right now by spencer christian, who has a very loud forecast as he boldly goes where we haven't been for a few weeks and that is in cooler temperatures. >> that is true. and we welcome it. it feels really good. so here's a look at what's going on right now. we've got some clouds coming in tonight during the overnight hours bringing some
