>> now, at five, the nation's shaken former president donald trump is, quote, fine after what the fbi is calling an attempted assassination against him. it happened during his campaign rally in pennsylvania. one bystander is dead and two others are injured. the suspect shot and killed. what we're learning about the terrifying moments before and while those shots were fired. good morning. it's sunday, july 14th. i'm stephanie sierra. we'll get to that breaking news in just a moment. but first, meteorologist lisa argen has a quick look at the weather. good morning lisa. >> good morning stephanie. the cool down continues. we're looking at a good deal of cloud cover around the bay right now. and even those lightning strikes. but they won't be affecting us. we're looking at 50s and 60s right now. 61 in hayward. good morning sonoma 56 for you. we're 5 to 10 degrees cooler inland, a little milder with that fog by the shoreline upper 80s to near 90 today. inland around the bay shore we've got 70 some low 70s at

best. san mateo for you. and along the coast, it's gray, it's cloudy, and that mist and drizzle lingering. so we'll talk about a pleasant week, a warm up as well, in a few minutes. stephanie. >> all right. lisa thank you. this morning we're learning more about the man the fbi says attempted to assassinate former president donald trump. he has identified as thomas matthew crooks. he is 20 years old. and from bethel park, pennsylvania. sources say he was registered to vote as a republican and recently made a donation to a democratic aligned group. now, for the very latest, we turn to abc news reporter perry russom. perry, what can you tell us? >> well, you know, this week was supposed to be a week for republicans to celebrate, but now this is taking a serious turn with the fbi investigating the assassination attempt. a former president trump. this morning, the fbi is naming the suspected shooter as thomas matthew crooks, 20 years old, from bethel park, pennsylvania, south of pittsburgh. the fbi

saying this remains an active and ongoing investigation. overnight, former president trump arriving in new jersey, walking down the stairs of his plane hours after what the fbi is calling an assassination attempt at his campaign rally in pennsylvania. look what happene. new video shows the secret service reacting to the shooting on top of that white roof, a law enforcement source tells abc news the shooter is believed to be a lone wolf. we do not currently have an identified motive, although our investigators are working tirelessly to attempt to identify what that motive was. >> law enforcement sources tell abc news. >> the shooter fired as many as eight rounds using an ar style rifle from a rooftop. this video from above shows what's believed to be the suspected gunman, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation. that rooftop is about 400ft from the stage, the shooting happening minutes into a rally in butler county,

pennsylvania, north of pittsburgh. trump releasing a statement that reads in part, it is incredible that such an act can take place in our country. i was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. i knew immediately that something was wrong and that i heard a whizzing sound shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. >> there's no place in america for this kind of violence. it's sick. it's sick. it's one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. >> and a senior federal official tells abc news they will now be looking at the security plans here at the rnc after what happened yesterday. we can tell you the security here is airport like with multiple checkpoints. and this is not open to the public. back to you. >> yes, perry, we know a big part of this investigation, of course, was that the secret service is now looking into how the shooter was able to get so close. what's happening with the convention set to start tomorrow? still going on as planned? >> yeah, that was a major question. we had yesterday. what does this mean for the rnc? what does this mean for the schedule?

we're being told nothing is going to change. still a four day convention monday through thursday. >> all right perry, we appreciate your update. thank you. here's a look now at the map showing the distance between the stage where trump was standing. that's on the right. it also shows where the suspect's body was located after he was killed by secret service on the left. you can also see where the secret service snipers were located on the top right of your screen. now, the big question this morning is what went wrong with security? that will be the focus of a sweeping federal investigation into the assassination attempt on the former president, corey allen of alameda is a former u.s. secret service agent who protected president obama and his family. he was very direct about what he thinks happened. >> there was a there was a lapse in security, something something was missed or something went behind after the sweeps were done. and somehow somebody gained access to it with a weapon, allen told us protecting a president and a former

president involved not only the secret service, but also local and state police. >> multiple security sweeps are performed. he defended his former agency, which he called the best in the world. >> they're safe and these agents do a stellar job, and they are the best at what they do in the world, period. people come to them to get trained for their expertise and the foreign dignitaries that come in and out of the country constantly, and you never hear a peep about it. it's because they do a stellar job and they will continue doing a great job. and there will be lessons learned from this. there has to be. >> he says what happened was unfathomable considering how good the secret service is at their jobs now. former house speaker nancy pelosi is reacting this morning. she referenced the attack on her husband at their home here in san francisco. she said, quote, as one whose family has been the victim of political violence, i know firsthand that political violence of any kind has no place in our society. i thank god that former president

trump is safe. as we learn more details about this horrifying incident, let us pray that all those in attendance at the former president's rally are unharmed. and california governor gavin newsom also reacting, saying, quote, violence has no place in our democracy. my thoughts are with president trump and everyone impacted at the rally. we're also getting reaction from both sides of the political aisle. they're raising concerns about political rhetoric. abc seven news reporter anser hassan talked to local leaders and experts. >> violence has never been the answer. violence is not the answer. violence will never be the answer. >> bay area congressman eric swalwell, himself a victim of political threats reaching across the political divide, condemning what appears to be an attempt to assassinate former president donald trump and warning against threats of retaliation to anyone who is seeking to use this for any political benefit. >> i urge you not to do that.

that unity must be our antidote. in a moment like this. >> desperation. this is a desperation move. it's very tragic. >> lisa drisko is a moraga resident and longtime trump loyalist who has organized rallies at the overpass in lafayette. she sees the shooting as an outcome of an escalation in political polarization. >> as president trump was walking off the platform, he put his fist up and said, fight. and that's exactly we need to fight in the political realm. not with bullets, not with fists. >> there's been a build to something like this for some time. john dennis, chairman of the san francisco republican party, says he has had made threats against him as well. he's calling on both sides to forcefully condemn what happened and critical of how democrats have portrayed the former president. >> the fine people hoax, the russia hoax, the, you know, the bleach hoax. all this nonsense and basically call him a

dictator in waiting, despite the fact that he, you know, served as the as the president of the united states, we need to cut that back. >> melinda jackson is professor of political science at san jose state university. she says political polarization has been leading to political demonization for years. >> he has the best security in the world surrounding him. so the fact that someone was able to take a shot, at president trump, at a political rally is pretty, surprising and disturbing for sure. she points to the attacks on nancy pelosi's husband and the attempted kidnaping of michigan governor gretchen whitmer as other examples of escalating violence. >> but she thinks it's too early to determine what political impact there may be, especially with undecided voters. he has a history, certainly, of sometimes, you know, violent rhetoric or rhetoric that seems to support violence. >> and if that happens, then i think some voters could

certainly be turned off. >> anser hassan. abc seven news this morning. >> trump supporters will hold a rally at the highway 24 overpass in lafayette all day. they say it's in support of president trump and free speech. now, shootings involving politicians and candidates in the u.s. are quite rare. the most recent one prior to yesterday was congressman steve scalise of louisiana. he was shot and severely injured during a practice for the congressional baseball game in july of 2017. the gunman was shot and killed by police on the scene. scalise would have returned to congress in september of that year. now, he posted this on social media saying, quote, praying for president donald trump. there is never any place for political violence before that. in 2011, arizona congresswoman gabby giffords was shot during a public event. six people died in the incident. the shooting left giffords permanently injured. she resigned from congress the

following year to focus on her recovery. she has gone on to become a vocal proponent of gun control and anti gun violence. causes. the shooter pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life plus 140 years in federal priso. giffords posted this to acts saying political violence is terrifying. i know i'm holding former president trump and all those affected by yesterday's indefensible act of violence in my heart, political violence is un-american and is never acceptable, never. now we are updating this story as details come in about what happened at the rally and trump's injuries. you can find continuing coverage on abc seven news.com or wherever you stream abc seven. turning to weather now and the cold front underway. how's it looking outside, lisa? >> well, we're looking at a cooling trend. and as you check out mount tam, we've had temperatures here in the 90s all week long. remember, it is 23, 2600ft, depending on where

(janet) houston we have a playroom! news. this morning. the case of a missing three year old girl is now being investigated by san jose police as a homicide. fremont police say a body resembling ellie lorenzo's was located in san jose saturday morning. ellie's mother reported her missing when she did not return from a scheduled visit

with her father. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has the message shared by ellie's heartbroken family. >> a south bay family is remembering a little girl who they say spread joy everywhere she went. the death of three year old ellie lorenzo was confirmed by her family, who shared this message. we are heartbroken at the loss of our dear, sweet ellie. she was the most charming, funny, smart, friendly little girl. we wanted to extend our thanks to the community at large in their support through the search for ellie. ellie lorenzo lived in mountain view. her mother, crystal obi, said she was last seen thursday when the toddler left for a scheduled visit with her father in fremont, but never returned. obi, making this emotional plea. >> ellie, i love you so much. please. please looking for you and we're going to find you. >> police say ellie's father was found dead in san francisco on friday. investigators say the body of a toddler resembling

ellie was found in san jose. according to bay city news, that discovery happened at a recycling facility on saturday morning. police say a motive for the crime is unknown. fremont police were at the casa arroyo apartments on saturday, where it's believed ellie's father lived. officers were seen entering a unit at the complex, neighbors learning about the tragic news death of a child who's been missing, >> well, i mean, my typical reaction is disgust. >> fremont police asking the community for patience while they continue to investigate the tragic death of a little girl in fremont. cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> in the east bay, casper's hot dogs location in downtown hayward is officially closed. for the last 75 years, the building on c street has been hard to miss. the family owned bay area hot dog chain is now consolidating locations. it's shutting down its oldest restaurant because of declining foot traffic in downtown

hayward. local customers paid them a visit to relish one final frank the hot dog. >> they have the very best hot dogs. we got wienerschnitzel over there. we got 7-eleven over here. but nothing beats casper's because it's a very, you know, reminds you of your childhood. >> employees have been offered roles at casper's restaurant on foothill boulevard. not too far from the c street storefront. casper also has a restaurant in dublin, oakland, pleasant hill and richmond. the workers, who operate the tour boats to alcatraz island walked off the job. members of alcatraz workers united picketed outside the ferry landing for alcatraz city cruises in san francisco yesterday. workers are striking over wages and working conditions. >> we are fighting to try and bring this workforce up to area standards with all the other ferry companies that can include that includes wages, working conditions, our schedule. we

just want to be at the same level as everyone else here. >> hornblower, which is the operator for the alcatraz ferries, says tours to the island are operating as scheduled. alcatraz city cruises general manager told us in a statement, quote, we have been in good faith negotiations and are working diligently towards reaching a mutually beneficial agreement. our company is focused on achieving a fair and equitable resolution, which supports both our crew and the continued success of alcatraz city cruises, now also on the bay. today you'll see the f 50 fleet out braving the choppy waters again. today for the final day of sail. gp and lisa, there's no doubt the wind worked in someone's favor yesterday. >> yeah, always just like i'm right somewhere around the bay area since there's so many microclimates. so yes, we are looking at this area of low pressure here that continues to allow some subtropical moisture to stream up all throughout the state of california. you may have felt a little bit more humid yesterday. you see, the

lightning strikes here, which, you know, never a good thing, but we are looking at the moisture in and around the bay area. there have been a few sprinkles up towards sonoma, but overall we are continuing with our cooling trend. it is 59 in fremont, 64 in san jose. sfo is 57. so really back in line where we should be with mainly in the 50s and we have clouds all over, not only in the north bay, but all the way out towards the delta, concord, livermore, a gray start for you. so we've got the cooling trend continuing today. the second half of the weekend, and then temperatures near average the next couple of days as we get towards the later part of the week, inland heat returns and it looks like we're going to see this into the friday saturday time period. so still undetermined how hot. but notice for the time being we've got low clouds and fog taking their time mid-morning, pulling back and then sunshine. look how far they move towards the bay and into the delta as we get into your monday morning. so

once again, some slow clearing and then we'll get into a sunny and pleasant afternoon looking for some cooler numbers. well, we have them to start the workweek this is wednesday where we go the other direction. not too warm, but we're coming up a few degrees into the low 90s here in our inland valleys, pleasant around the bay. by thursday we're some some mid and upper 90s, but that's out towards the delta still 96 in concord warming up and we've got those 80s around the bay into the north bay with upper 80s in san jose. but check out friday. this is where temperatures could be flirting with that. you know, heat zone where it gets particularly hot. and perhaps an advisory headed our way. still many days out and you notice we stay comfortable at the coast here. so that looks like the trend. as for today, we're going in the other direction with about 74 in oakland, 68, san francisco, partly cloudy skies, that breeze kicking up in the afternoon. upper 70s. so a pretty nice forecast here for

parts of the bay shore where it's been certainly on the hot side. cooler 81 today in san jose. and notice up in the north bay we've got 78 santa rosa. so that's certainly a big change from where you've been the past couple of days. low 90s inland. the best we can do there. so that's a definite breath of fresh air for our inland east bay. the accuweather seven day forecast mild to warm today 60s coast upper 70s around the bay, 90 inland and then morning clouds. afternoon sun for the next couple of days where the temperatures will be a little bit below average by wednesday. we're getting warmer and the rest of the week looks pretty toasty inland. stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. when we return, what's supposed to help some drivers is now becoming a big problem for neighbors in san francisco. why? residents say an ev charging station is ruining their living experience. and thi walk is seven days away. next sunday, july 21st, at golden

banking again. online and mobile services have been down since june 29th, when hackers hit the telco with a ransomware attack. the bank says customers money is safe, and it also says they're taking steps to help people who missed bill payments during the shutdown. ev charging stations are everywhere in the bay area, and with them come large fans that are used to cool the equipment. but one station in san francisco appears to be pushing residents out of the neighborhood due to what they call a noise nuisance. imagine waking up, going to sleep, or

assassination against him. it happened during his campaign rally in pennsylvania. the suspect now dead. what witnesses say they saw when those shots were fired as safety questions remain. good morning. before we get to our breaking news coverage, let's first bring in lisa. she is tracking the latest on your sunday forecast. i certainly felt the missed out this morning. >> yes, we needed the wipers, mist and drizzle and a lot of cloud cover out there. the view from mount tam. you can see the layers of clouds right now it is 56 in the city, 60 in oakland, 64 in san jose. the clouds extend all the way out to our inland valleys so it is cloudy. concord, livermore at 60, as well as the delta and that southwest wind allowing for that cooling 56 in santa rosa. so that brings us anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees down from yesterday at this time in our inland valleys and the cloud cover, it's going to be retreating. it's going to take its time, though you'll notice by 10:00 we've got about 70 in san ramon. 2:00. we're in the upper 80s inland. and notice not

much higher than 90 today in livermore. stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. we're following breaking news. former president donald trump is making an appeal for resilience this morning. he said, quote, it is more important than ever that we stand united. his words come one day after an attempted assassination against him while he was on stage at a campaign rally in pennsylvania. also, new this morning trump campaign senior advisers now say he is in great spirits and doing well. the suspect behind the shooting has been identified as 20 year old thomas matthew crooks of bethel park, pennsylvania. authorities say he fired multiple shots from a building rooftop outside of the rally venue. he was killed by the secret service. law enforcement sources tell abc news they believe he was acting as a lone wolf. he was armed with an ar 15 and fired as many as eight rounds, one spectator in the crowd was killed, two others who were wounded and are now in the

hospital in critical condition. a witness describes what he saw once he realized trump was hit. >> go on. and then i looked down. i saw the man you know died in the bleachers, it was just complete pandemonium. like every, you know, there was a bit of a delay, like there was a lot of confusion, but immediately, you know, it seemed like more gunfire erupted. i couldn't figure out where that was coming from. and then i helped carry the body of the man down out of the bleachers, and they took him to a tent, behind the bleachers. >> former president trump is now in bedminster, new jersey. after leaving pennsylvania. this is the motorcade that brought him to the airport with extra officers providing the escort. president biden has spoken with trump. mr. biden is pausing his presidential campaign ads for the time being. us representative zoe lofgren released a statement saying, quote, political violence has no place in our democracy. i condemn this shooting and am grateful for first responders, secret service and law

enforcement. i wish former president trump good health and a fast recovery. reaction from the political world continues to pour in this morning. abc7 news reporter j.r stone talked to a political science expert about the impact of seeing this possible attack on a former president. >> i think i have the reaction that a lot of folks have in the united states right now, which is a mix of fear and confusion and concern and i think it's really critically important to mention in these very hyper polarized times in which we liv, that the party of the victim or the shooter at this point is irrelevant. it's always a big problem for your democracy when people decide to determine electoral politics through the use of violence, it's against the concepts of democracy. and so i think for those who care about democracy, regardless of which party you identify with or if you don't have a party, it's really important to remember this type of behavior is just not something that a democracy

can withstand, nor should it tolerate. >> the tension out there just seems so high. even, you know, after this incident happened today and after we see those images with, donald trump seemingly having blood on his ear, you know, you read some of the comments online and it's just it's vicious, despite some of what we've seen talk about the tension out there right now, >> you know, i would to those folks who are engaging in, you know, celebration of what just happened or at least making a joke of it. i would remind them that the whole reason we have, well, not the whole reason, but one of the reasons we have a democracy is because too often in human history, we decided things with might makes right, that is where it was the most, you know, powerful and could use violence to attain power earned power. the idea behind democracy is no. the people should decide the electoral process. a peaceful, transparent electoral process should decide. and there's nothing, in my estimation, as someone who loves

democracy, in my estimation, there's nothing, funny or good about this. this is bad for everybody. and not just, you know, republicans who have to worry that their candidate, you know, nearly missed death from all indications, but across the nation, this is not good. this is not a way to behave in a democracy in our nation's history, more than a dozen presidents, former presidents and candidates for president have been attacked. >> that list includes abraham lincoln, who was the first president to die by assassination in 1865. former president theodore roosevelt was shot in the chest when he was on his way to make a speech for his 1912 campaign to get his old job back. he survived john f kennedy was shot and killed by a sniper in dallas in 1963. his brother, robert f kennedy, was a presidential candidate in 1968 when he was shot and killed in los angeles the night he won the california democratic primary. gerald ford faced two

assassination attempts in 1975. the first in sacramento and then weeks later in san francisco. he survived, and ronald reagan was wounded when he was leaving the hilton hotel in washington, d.c. in 1981, he was struck by a bullet under his left armpit after a bullet ricocheted off of the limousine. reagan returned to the white house after 12 days in the hospital. now let's go to our sister station on the east coast, abc news reporter josh einiger is at the site of the shooting. with more on what we know so far. josh >> well, stephanie, good morning from butler, pennsylvania. it's a very small rural farming town about 30 miles north of pittsburgh. and you could see people are waking up this morning to a giant roadblock through the center of town. as law enforcement swarms this fairground to try to get to the bottom of the motivation for this attempted assassination of donald trump, the world will see a vibrant republican party.

donald trump was just minutes into his speech before tens of thousands in this rural pennsylvania fairground went through the cheers of his followers. came the popping of gunfire, the former president grabbed at his right ear, then dove to the ground as a swarm of secret service agents scrambled to cover him, and we heard pom pom pop, pop, pop and everybody's mind. >> it was like 4th of july. somebody must have been still doing firecrackers. >> a few endless moments later, as panic rippled through the crowd. the agents brought trump to his feet, blood now trickling down his face. he raised his fist and mouthed the word fight as his detail rushed him off the stage to the safety of an armored suv. >> we got down. we got down, and we huddled and we started praying. >> the fbi has identified the shooter as 20 year old thomas matthew crooks of bethel park,

pennsylvania, about an hour awa. officials say he perched himself with an ar style rifle on a roof about 400ft from the stage where trump was speaking, and he fired at least eight rounds before secret service counter-snipers returned fire and killed him. >> we do not currently have an identified motive, although our investigators are working tirelessly to attempt to identify what that motive was. >> i saw the man that was hit in the head, and he was a lot of blood, and i knew there was no way he was going to survive tha. >> a man in the crowd was killed. two others critically injured. trump was grazed in the ear. i was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear, he later posted. i knew immediately that something was wrong and that i heard a whizzing sound shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. much bleeding. took place, he added, so i realized then what was happening. after receiving treatment at a local hospital

late last night, trump arrived at newark airport, walking down the stairs from his jet on his own power. his motorcade then whisked him to his golf club in bedminster. president biden returned to the white house and spoke by phone with the former president. the biden campaign has pulled all political advertising after the assassination attempt on his rival. >> there's no place in america for this kind of violence. it's sick, it's sick. it's one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. we cannot allow for this to be happening. we cannot be like this. >> we right now, fbi agents are flooding into western pennsylvania to try to figure out the motivation behind this attack, and also to double check that the threat is over. >> meanwhile, absent from that briefing last night was any representative from the secret service. the director of that agency has already been called to testify before congress on how that agency failed to foil this attack. we're live in

celebrating his 76th birthday. lapd sources tell abc news he was found dead in his home and they believe he died of natural causes. simmons rose to fame in the 70s, and 80s after opening several gyms and releasing his high energy fitness tapes. he spent decades encouraging people to stay fit with music, dancing and relentless positivity. simmons had stepped away from the public eye the last few years. he posted on facebook last night saying he'd never received so many birthday messages in his life. richard simmons was 76 years old. all right, let's check conditions outside. good morning. lisa. >> hey, stephanie, good morning to you. it is 56 degrees in the city. here. look at all the cloud cover. this has been the way even since the heat wave, the fog has tried to clear the coast on those warmer days. today, not so much. we've got temperatures barely at 90 inland.

looking at the beaches, if you're headed that way, a lot of fog and cloud cover in the 60s. so temperatures will be pretty typical and limited. clearing here for a mostly cloudy afternoon. south bay numbers from the low 80s in san jose, some upper 80s. the warmer spots, the hills here, los gatos, morgan hill, gilroy 87. on the peninsula. you're much cooler in the mid 70s for you from palo alto mountain view, redwood city maybe some low 80s, but as you get closer to south city pacifica, we're in the clouds in the low to mid 60s, upper 60s downtown and up in the north bay. noticed that yesterday it was a hot one in napa, but other locations continue their cooling and today that will be the case as well, with about 80 in novato, 86 sonoma, napa a lot cooler for you today, upper 70s to near 80. and you head to the bay shore here, low 70s hayward, 7376, in newark. so that's a big change
