seven mornings live from the man you know. >> it died on the bleachers, it was just complete pandemonium. >> the moments of chaos following the attempted assassination of former president donald trump this morning. new details from the shooting scene and firsthand accounts from those who witnessed the attack. good morning. it's sunday, july 14th. we'll have more on our top story in just a moment. but first, lisa is here with more on this cooling trend. >> yes, you know what? really? dodging a bullet. if you look at live doppler seven right now, look at all the lightning strikes. there are plenty to the north of us and southeast of us in yosemite and those have actually started some fires. and for the bay area, it's back to the low clouds, keeping the atmosphere stable and just a few high clouds at times yesterday. here's a look at our current temperatures, ranging from the upper 50s san francisco, half moon bay to the mid and upper 60s, hayward and san jose. and from our east bay hills camera vollmer peak. we are certainly cooler today because of that well-established marine layer.

mid 60s for you in concord, about nine degrees cooler in livermore. the delta has that southwest wind. so as we go through the next several hours, we're warming up just to the upper 80s to near 90 inland and pleasant on the cool side. elsewhere around the bay. stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. this morning we're learning more about the man the fbi says attempted to assassinate former president donald trump. let's get right to our sister station on the east coast to abc news reporter josh ehlinger is on the scene in pennsylvania. josh, what's the latest? >> well, stephanie butler, pennsylvania, now at noon local time, is pretty busy for a small town, except that area where you can see the police cars blocking and the roadblocks. that is the area that is frozen as this investigation gets underway. and it is presumably somewhere in that vicinity that abc news has now learned that investigators have discovered the shooter's car and have discovered what they describe as items of concern inside that vehicle. it's not entirely clear if they

are dangerous or ever were dangerous, but they're being looked at very carefully. after yesterday's attempted assassination of a former president of the united states, the world will see a vibrant republican party. donald trump was just minutes into his speech before tens of thousands in this rural pennsylvania fairground went through the cheers of his followers. came the popping of gunfire. the former president grabbed at his right ear, then dove to the ground as a swarm of secret service agents scrambled to cover him, and we heard poun, pound, pop, pop, pop and everybody's mind. >> it was like 4th of july. somebody must have been still doing firecrackers. >> a few endless moments later, as panic rippled through the crowd. the agents brought trump to his feet, blood now trickling down his face. he raised his fist and mouthed the word fight as his detail rushed him off the

stage to the safety of an armored suv. >> we got down, we got down, and we huddled and we started praying. >> the fbi has identified the shooter as 20 year old thomas matthew crooks of bethel park, pennsylvania, about an hour away. now investigators confirmed to abc news they believe this screenshot shows the suspect receiving his high school diploma. it's now part of their probe. officials say he perched himself with an ar style rifle on a roof about 400ft from the stage where trump was speaking, and he fired at least eight rounds before secret service counter snipers returned fire and killed him. >> we do not currently have an identified motive, although our investigators are working tirelessly to attempt to identify what that motive was. i saw the man that was hit in the head, and he was a lot of blood, and i knew there was no way he was going to survive that. >> a man in the crowd was killed. two others critically injured. trump was grazed in the

ear. i was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear, he later posted. i knew immediately that something was wrong and that i heard a whizzing sound shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin, much bleeding took place, he added, so i realized then what was happening. after receiving treatment at a local hospital late last night, trump arrived at newark airport, walking down the stairs from his jet on his own power. his motorcade then whisked him to his golf club in bedminster. president biden returned to the white house and spoke by phone with the former president. the biden campaign has pulled all political advertising after the assassination attempt on his rival. >> there's no place in america for this kind of violence. it's sick, it's sick. it's one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. we cannot allow for this to be happening. we cannot be like this. we have learned very little information about the man who was shot and

killed. >> a spectator at this event, or about the two other spectators who were shot and are listed, or at least at last report in critical condition. perhaps they will come up at a briefing within the next few minutes with the governor of pennsylvania and state police officials. and when that happens, abc news, we'll have a special report. but for now, we are live in butler, pennsylvania. josh einiger, abc seven news stephanie. >> yeah. josh a lot still developing. we do know the firearm recovered at the scene was legally purchased by the suspect's father. that's according to multiple law enforcement sources. looking ahead to the rnc. josh, what do you know about the plans to reexamine security protocols for the convention? >> well, we know just that that they are reexamining security protocols. there's an enormous concern. obviously, it already was of domestic violent extremism surrounding the potential for political violence. and, of course, we saw that yesterday with his historic attempted assassination of a

former president. so, yeah, it already is an armed camp. and as it as it has been for years at a political convention. but you could definitely expect that the rnc is going to be rethinking their security protocols over the next couple of days as it begins tomorrow. >> as we know, those plans are happening as we speak. josh, thank you for your reporting on the ground, for sure. the big question this morning is what went wrong with security. that will be the focus of a sweeping federal investigation into the assassination attempt on the former president. corey allen of alameda is a former u.s. secret service agent who protected president obama and his family. he was very direct about what he thinks happened. >> there was a there was a lapse in security, something something was missed or something went behind after the sweeps were done. and somehow somebody gained access to it with a weapon. >> allen told us protecting a president and a former president involves not only the secret service, but also local and state police. multiple security

sweeps are performed, and he defended his former agency, which he called the best in the world, adding what happened was unfathomable. this morning, former president donald trump is making an appeal for unity. he said in part, quote, in this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand united and show our true character as americans remaining strong and determined and not allowing evil to win. i truly love our country and love you all and look forward to speaking to our great nation this week from wisconsin trump campaign senior advisers say he is now in great spirits and doing well. speaker emerita nancy pelosi said, quote, as one whose family has been the victim of political violence, i know firsthand that political violence of any kind has no place in our society. and california governor gavin newsom also reacting, saying, quote, violence has no place in our democracy. my thoughts are with president trump and everyone

impacted at the rally. bay area congressman eric swalwell, who's been the target of political threats in the past, is also reacting to the attempted assassination. he's calling the violence awful and despicable. take a listen. >> violence has never been the answer. violence is not the answer. violence will never be the answer. and so in every possible way, i condemn what happened today. it was awful. it's despicable. and it cannot continue in our country. i'm glad that the former president is okay and fine as he has described it. i'm saddened that at least one person, an innocent person, has been killed. i'm grateful to law enforcement, particularly the secret service, to anyone who is seeking to use this for any political benefit. i urge you not to do that. that unity must be our antidote. in a

moment like this. we've been through too much political violence in this country. >> shootings involving politicians and candidates in the u.s. are quite rare. the most recent one prior to yesterday was congressman steve scalise of louisiana. he was shot and severely injured during a practice for the congressional baseball game back in 2017. he posted this on social media, quote, praying for president donald trump. there is never any place for political violence. now to put this all in context before that, in 2011, arizona congresswoman gabby giffords was shot during a public event. six people died in the incident. the shooting left giffords permanently injured. giffords posted this to x, saying political violence is terrifying. i know i'm holding former president trump and all those affected by yesterday's indefensible act of violence. in my heart, political violence is un-american and is never

acceptable. never in our nation's history, more than a dozen presidents, former presidents and candidates for president have been attacked. the list includes abraham lincoln, who was the first president to die by assassination in 1865. former president theodore roosevelt was shot in the chest when he was on his way to make a speech for his 1912 campaign to get his old job back. he survived john f kennedy was shot and killed by a sniper in dallas in 1963. his brother, robert f kennedy, was a presidential candidate in 1968 when he was shot and killed in los angeles the night he won the california democratic primary. gerald ford faced two assassination attempts in 1975, the first in sacramento and then weeks later here in san francisco. he survived, and ronald reagan was wounded when he was leaving the hilton hotel in washington, d.c. in 1981, he was struck by a bullet under his left armpit after a bullet

wales attended the men's singles final at wimbledon today and you can see her present the trophy to carlos alcaraz, who took home the title for the 2024 men's wimbledon final. the princess is royal patron of the all england lawn tennis and croquet club. this is her second appearance since her cancer diagnosis. that is earlier this year. back here at home, that cooling trend continues. let's check in with lisa on the latest. >> okay. we are certainly looking at a nice day today. we've got that strong push of marine air and there's a disturbance i want to show you. you can see the cloud cover there and the lightning strikes from the north to the east of u. and really not a chance that we're going to see that. but still, this lightning has started many fires around the state. and this is exactly what we're concerned about obviously this time of year. but that marine layer creating a very well established, stable atmosphere. and as a result, we're going to see a pretty

typical day. in fact, temperatures are going to be a little bit below average. i think there's a look outside our window where we've got upper 50s san francisco, half moon bay, 64. in hayward it is 68. in san jose. and from vollmer peak you can see that deck of low clouds there. so it took a little bit of time, but we get to enjoy several days of what would be some average weather in mid-july. there's a look from our exploratorium camera, so the cooling trend continues for the rest of the weekend. we will be near average or slightly below today into monday and tuesday. wednesday looks nice, but by the later part of the workweek it looks like the high pressure that went away might be coming back. it will be coming back and it's going to warm us up. but the big question is how much is it going to warm up? so skipping ahead to wednesday here, you'll notice that we're once again in a comfortable range where we've got those low 90s inland 70s around the bay and 60s at the coast. so each and every day we have the low clouds, the fog burning back to the shoreline, the sea breeze and the

comfortable outlook for the afternoon. by thursday we begin to warm up. so we're looking at these mid 90s inland. and that isn't really too hot right? not too hard to take. you'll see the 80s down in the south bay a couple degrees above average. but by friday it's looking like we could be flirting with 100 and our inland valleys and up to the north, you'll notice once again we've got those upper 90s into santa rosa and perhaps san jose heating up. so it's, you know, it's a five days out. it's far out. and it could change. the big question is, is it going to get even warmer than that beyond that friday outlook. as for today, near average upper 60s san francisco, partly cloudy skies, the sea breeze up to some 20 miles an hour. and we're looking at that delta breeze already allowing for the winds to bring in that cooler air to our inland valley. so low 90s should do it for our warmest locations. that includes livermore, antioch and fairfield today, but elsewhere, a lot cooler. look at fremont into the 70s 76 palo alto with san mateo only 71. upper 70s in the north

that rally began. let's listen to the governor and law enforcement. noon. >> i'm pennsylvania governor josh shapiro, and i'm honored every single day to represent the good people of pennsylvania. an honor to be here today in butler township, a wonderful community, a community where people love one another, respect one another. and unfortunately, last night had to deal with tragedy in their neighborhood. i've just come from a briefing with the fbi and the pennsylvania state police, and i'm joined today, of course, by colonel christopher paris of the pennsylvania state police. law enforcement will have more to share throughout the day. i'd like to make a few comments separate from the ongoing investigation. first and foremost, the assassination attempt on the former president donald trump last night was absolutely unacceptable and tragic. lori and i are grateful

that the former president is safe and according to him and his team is fine. it's also important to note that last night, three of our fellow pennsylvanians were shot, one fatally and two in critical condition. i've just spent time speaking to the families, and i want to offer my prayers and the prayers of all 13 million pennsylvanians for the two individuals who are being treated at this time. we lost a fellow pennsylvanian last night, corey comparator i just spoke to corey's wife and corey's two daughters. corey was a girl. dad. corey was a firefighter. corey went to church every sunday. corey loved his community and most especially

corey loved his family. corey was an avid supporter of the former president and was so excited to be there last night with him in the community. i asked corey's wife if it would be okay for me to share that we spoke and she said yes. she also asked that i share with all of you that corey died a hero. the corey dove on his family to protect them last night at this rally. corey was the very best of us. may his memory be a blessing. last night shocking for this community and for this commonwealth. and i know for this country, political disagreements can never, ever be addressed through violence.

disagreements are okay, but we need to use a peaceful political process to settle those differences. this is a moment where all leaders have a responsibility to speak and act with moral clarity. we're all leaders need to take down the temperature and rise above the hateful rhetoric that exists and search for a better, brighter future for this nation. it's the work that i try to do every day here in the commonwealth of pennsylvania, and that's the work that falls to each and every american right now. and so i ask that you join me in prayer for the two pennsylvanians who are in critical condition, that we continue to wish for a full and speedy recovery and pray for the former president, and that the comparator family remains in our thoughts and prayers. they have some very challenging times

ahead of them. they will have an empty seat at the dinner table for the rest of their lives, but we need to make sure the quarry's memory is forever a blessing. and here in pennsylvania, we will see to it that that is the case. and with that, i'll be happy to try and take a few of your questions. >> governor, a lot of folks are starting to ask the tough question about whether that building that the shooter accessed should have been secured, should it have been secured, and do the pennsylvania state police have any responsibility to have secured it? >> i'm not going to get into any questions regarding or answer any questions regarding the ongoing investigation. i trust that the fbi and the pennsylvania state police will keep you posted throughout the day and in the days ahead as to their investigation, governor, there were some concerning items that the police had found in the suspect's vehicle. >> do you have any update on those? and are you confident at this point the threat is over, that he acted alone and that the

public is, in fact, safe? >> the investigation is ongoing and law enforcement will update you on the status of their investigation throughout the day. >> can you share any more about your communications with former president donald trump or his team? >> i have not spoken directly to the former president. i have wished him well. i think multiple times last evening, through statements, laurie and i have, the people of pennsylvania. i know we're praying for him. and again, according to his team and himself, it seems as though he will be fine. obviously relatively speaking, and we're glad to see that violence is never acceptable. i should also let you know that i did speak to president biden. he called me last night to make sure that here in the commonwealth, we had all the resources we needed. i assured him that we did at the time, he had yet to speak to president trump. i think they connected later in the evening, and he wanted me to know that he was trying to reach out to the former president. i think that that was the
