we have new information about the suspected gunman, just 20 years old. former classmates say he was rejected from his high school's rifle club. abc seven news starts now. >> from abc seven live. breaking news. >> breaking news, new video just into the newsroom. just about an hour ago, donald trump arrived in milwaukee for tomorrow's republican national convention. he's recovering after being shot in the ear during a rally yesterday. outside of pittsburgh. good evening, and thanks for joining us. i'm j.r stone. the latest statement about that shooting came just an hour ago. president joe biden says he spoke with trump and made a call for unity during an address from the oval office. >> politics must never be a literal battlefield, a god forbid, a killing field. i believe politics ought to be an arena for peaceful debate, to pursue justice, to make decisions guided by the

declaration of independence and our constitution. we stand for an america not of extremism and fury, but of decency and grace. >> the president called for unity and to lower the temperature of our politics. he put the shooting in the company of other significant cases of political violence, including the attack on former house speaker nancy pelosi's husband and the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. biden said violence was not an option and that we can't allow it to be normalized. we have live team coverage tonight with the latest from the republican national convention in milwaukee, but we start with reporter josh einiger, live in butler, pennsylvania, where investigators are looking into the attempted assassination of trump. josh >> at jr. good evening from butler, pennsylvania. it's a very small rural farming community north of pittsburgh, which is now entering its second night of this nightmare as the sun sets. and there are roadblocks still in an

investigation, a massive investigation still underway. the fbi says they believe the gunman acted alone, but they don't know why. what motivated this registered republican to target donald trump? for thousands of diehard donald trump supporters, this was the moment everything changed. >> take a look at what happened as gunfire erupted, the former president hit the ground, but behind him, renee white stood in shock. >> everything was so surreal. it was like i was having an out of body experience and then boom, boom, the other two shots. and by. >> her friend tim watson, i didn't know what to do because trump's like fight, fight, fight. >> at the same time. now it's like well wait what if there's another shooter? should we get down again? >> he's got a gun. the shooter had scaled the wall of this low building on the fairground in a rural farming community just outside the security perimeter,

but less than 200 yards from where donald trump was speaking. the fusillade of bullets grazed the former president's ear. but three spectators were caught in the crossfire. corey comparator, a firefighter and father of two, died of a gunshot wound. two other spectators, critically wounded. today, investigators surged resources to the fairground as they tried to decipher the motivation of the shooter, identified as 20 year old thomas matthew crooks, seen here receiving his high school diploma. an image now a part of the probe. >> i want to really see something. >> investigators say crooks got off eight shots before a secret service counter-sniper took him out as if nothing ever happened. the flag that hung over the rally location still flies, but the whole fairground has been frozen solid in the summer heat. anything anyone left behind when they were forced to leave is being preserved as evidence. and it's anyone's guess how long it will take the fbi to go through it all. eventually, they'll finish the job someday. life might seem normal here, but for

those who were there, the sights and sounds of that day won't soon fade. the gunshots, the screams, the bleachers smeared with blood. >> didn't know if there was more shooters. didn't know anything other than we need to get out of here. i was going to die. that was it. >> a really difficult 24 hours plus for the people who live in this small community. as for the weapon the shooter was using, it was the fbi says, an ar style rifle that had been purchased legally by the shooter's father, his family tonight cooperating with the investigation. we're live in butler, pennsylvania. josh einiger, abc seven news, jr. >> josh, you've been out near the fairgrounds all day. a couple of things here. what have you seen investigators doing as they search for evidence? and tonight, is there any idea on the timetable of how long they could be out there for. >> so the short answer to that second question is no. this

could take a very, very long time. we're talking about a huge area that's currently locked down. and as for the first question we're going to zoom down there. you're looking down there. that's the building where the gunman, uh, was lying prone and where he attacked this rally and attack to the former president. and earlier this morning, we're talking probably ten, 12 hours ago, there was a fire truck up there with its ladder tower. ladder extended. and there were investigators we could clearly see on the roof, gathering evidence from the roof where the shooter had been. we have seen a helicopter flying low over the scene, a fixed wing airplane flying low over the scene. the fbi has brought in platoons of assistance. whether it's agents or crime scene investigators. a very large federal crime scene vehicle is back in there right now. meanwhile, how long will it take? all i'll say is there were thousands of people they had to leave everything behind. and they have been told it could take days, if not longer, before they're able to get their

belongings back. jr. >> josh, thanks so much and great work out there. keep it up. moving along now the former president is in milwaukee tonight ahead of the republican national convention. reporter liz nagy with our sister station in chicago is live there talking with the republican faithful. liz, when is trump expected to first appear at the convention? and really, what's the mood of those that you've been talking with? >> jr. it's unclear if we will see or hear from the former president in public before he officially accepts his party nomination on stage inside the arena here on thursday, but the former president is here on the ground in milwaukee. he got here about 6:00 local time just a few hours ago. that was just about 24 hours after he was shot on stage in pennsylvania. and we're told it was important to the former president to get here quickly. he wanted to join his party's loyal supporters here and show some strength. after that incident that happened yesterday. but as you can imagine, he arrives here to a city that is very tightly locked down, both with local law

enforcement and secret service agents here on the ground. now, the republican national committee insists that this event is going on as scheduled. no changes have been made, but we did hear from the secret service this afternoon. they said there are no known threats to the rnc event. that is supposed to be happening, but this is happening under the absolute tightest possible security that the u.s. government can offer. so people will have to go through quite a bit of security to even get inside that arena. there are two different perimeters set up outside j.r. talk about that security and i know really every security in so many places is being questioned right now. >> i can imagine a lot of street closures there even tonight. >> there are a lot of street closures in place that it's very difficult to even get to that arena. but also i want to get back. you asked about the mood of people who are here. there are tens of thousands of delegates who are expected to be here in milwaukee this week. many of them are still arriving, but the delegates we have spoken to are even more energized, even

more determined and enthused than they were just yesterday. they believe that this may have helped donald trump's campaign. they say they are now here to make their case to the american people, and they are determined to make sure that he wins a second term for the white house. so you are going to see a very motivated and energized republican base here this week. >> liz, thank you so much. i know it will be a busy week out there. thank you. moving along now, an officer and butler lowered the flag to half staff outside a town building today. pennsylvania's governor ordered flags to be lowered across the state to recognize the tragedy and honor the firefighter that was killed yesterday. corey comparator was a former fire chief at the buffalo township volunteer fire department, a little more than ten miles away from the town where this shooting happened. he spent his final moments protecting his family as bullets kept flying. his fellow firefighters remember his commitment to protecting his community and his love for his family. >> it's just one of them guys in

the morning greeting at church would be the guy. he went from one side of the church to the other, greeting people. one of them smiles that lit up a room uh- he he was a family man for sure. loved his wife and his daughters dearly. >> as pennsylvania remembers former fire chief corey comparator. two other victims are still in the hospital. pennsylvania state police identified them as 57 year old david dutch, who is in stable condition, and 74 year old james copenhaver. he is also in stable condition. trump's campaign has started a go fund me page to raise money for the victims this afternoon. the effort doubled its $1 million goal, with more than 3 million raised. former first lady melania trump released a statement on x, reflecting on what the incident means for her and her family. she wrote in part, when i watched that violent bullet strike, my husband donald, i realized my life and barron's life were on the brink of

devastating change. she also said the winds of change have arrived. for those of you who cry in support, i thank you. i commend those of you who have reached out beyond the political divide. thank you. remembering that every single politician is a man or a woman with a loving family. details are trickling in about the suspected shooter. the fbi says his family is cooperating and that he had no known history of mental illness. a skilled nursing facility south of pittsburgh says the suspect worked there as a dietary aide. they say there were no concerns with his work and that he passed a background check. investigators confirmed to abc news they believe this screenshot shows the suspect receiving his high school diploma. they say it is part of their investigation. two former classmates told abc news the suspect was rejected into his high school's rifle club because he was such a, quote, bad shot and they say it would have been dangerous. other classmates say

here's a look at live doppler seven and the radar. and you can see that we've got nice onshore push of low clouds and cooler air. nice breezes to breezes, even gusts up to 33mph right now at oakland. adding to the cooling effect. and you can see most locations are two, 3 or 4 degrees cooler right now than at this time yesterday. so let's take a closer look at current temperature readings in san francisco 61 mid to upper 60s in oakland and hayward. mid 70s at san jose and redwood city, 59 at half moon bay. uh- partly clear conditions at the golden gate right now, but there are some low clouds as well. 64 petaluma 72 at both napa and santa rosa we have low to mid 80s at fairfield, concord and livermor. so let's check out our forecast headlines overnight. we'll see more clouds and fog as the cooling marine layer asserts itself. a few next few days near average temperatures under mainly sunny skies. but later in the week we'll have another warm up as our our inland areas will heat up once again. overnight, we'll see lots of low clouds and lots of drizzle near the coastline. some of it will probably move onshore overnight.
