milwaukee and the republican national convention, where president trump is set to take the stage once again, cannot must not go down this road in america. good evening, and thanks for joining us i'm j.r. stone. there is still a sense of aftershock over what the nation witnessed and what it now means. for the weeks ahead. the images have come to define the weekend and in many ways will come to define the 2024 presidential election. former president trump, bloodied and defiant in the moments following an attempt on his life. an fbi official tells abc news that evidence points to this being the work of a lone wolf, but investigators won't be comfortable on giving a motive until they've dug through the suspect's phone and looked deeper into his life. tonight, we're now hearing about some fateful moments, the butler county sheriff tells abc news. an officer confronted the shooter on the rooftop seconds before he opened fire. the sheriff says the shooter pointed his rifle at the officer and the

officer backed away. >> that's all i know is the officer had both hands up on the roof to get up onto the roof. never made it because the shooter had turned towards the officer and rightfully and smartly, the officer let go. >> it was a secret service sniper who took out the suspect as a barrage of bullets hit the rallying crowd, killing one and injuring the former president. images of the suspected shooter are starting to emerge. the suspect was arrested, registered republican, but someone who had more recently donated to a progressive group, investigators confirmed to abc news they believe this screenshot shows the suspect receiving his high school diploma. they say it's part of their investigation, former classmates tell abc news he was an outcast in school, barred from joining a gun club because he was such a, quote, bad shot. and all of this comes as we sit on the eve of the critical republican national convention. as we look live now

problem in the line of communication. >> my instinct is that there's potentially some kind of misunderstanding or somebody wasn't sure what to do with the information or who was to act on it, allen says. >> the secret service costs money, taxpayer money and assets are assigned based on the threat risk of any given event. but he says sometimes the problem could be much more basic. >> having dealt with radio failures myself uh- downpours in miami. you know, when president obama landed and air force one and my radio goes down because a thunderstorm came through and stuff like that happened, it's downright scary. >> so it's, it's tough to take, you know, it's hard to think that you can go somewhere. and these things will happen. >> oakland resident benji ross is troubled by saturday's attack on trump, but he's critical of the harshest criticism directed at the secret service. he says americans need to be patient until there's a full investigation. >> i think even people that are highly trained and highly skilled professionals, there may have been an oversight who knows? we never really know. but i think anything is going to be exacerbated, you know, in the media and then speculation. then

it kind of has a life of its own. >> we have the secret service for a reason. and, you know, they can correct errors. >> nolan higdon is a professor of history and communication at cal state east bay. he says there needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong. but he cautions against politicizing the entire secret service. >> it tends to just end up engendering a lot of cynicism about these individuals and these organizations that, despite their faults, are critical to our democracy. so i think it's irresponsible to, sort of blame the entire organization for whatever faults may have occurred. >> anser hassan abc seven news. >> thanks, unser. friends and family are heralding the acts of the man killed at the rally, corey cooper, a comparator, was the former fire chief at a volunteer fire department. a little more than ten miles away from where the shooting happene. he spent his final moments shielding his family from the bullets. his fellow firefighters remembered his commitment to protecting his community and his love for his family.

been caught and apprehended and are facing criminal consequences for that. and i think that's driving a lot of the reductions. so the crews that are hitting or have been hitting a lot of them have been arrested. >> criminologists told our partners at the san francisco standard. there are many reasons for dropping crime rates, and not all of them have to do with an increase in police presence. economic shifts are also a factor, among others. joining right now by spencer christian dropping crime rates hope uh- maybe some dropping temperatures, dropping temperatures. they started dropping already and will continue for a few days. >> so here we go. let's take a look at what's going on outside right now. you can see it's a pretty calm evening, wind wise. over in the area of the delta. a little bit breezier over near fairfield. and you can see virtually all locations are a few degrees cooler than they were last night at this time. so let's take a look at current temperature readings, starting with san francisco, which is at 57 degrees low to mid 60s at oakland, hayward, san jose, redwood city, 57 at half moon

bay, looking down onto the bay from mount tam, we see just a little thin layer of fog right now, mid 50s, mid to upper 50s at santa rosa, petaluma and napa right now, and mid 60s, fairfield and concord at 61 degrees at livermore. and now we'll check out our forecast headlines early tomorrow morning near the coast of bay. look for some clouds, low clouds, fog and patchy drizzle. next few days we'll see an average range of afternoon temperatures. nothing very extreme, but later in the week it will start heating up inland all over again. for tonight it was a look at the forecast animation actually overnight into the early morning hours. lots of patchy drizzle offshore and some right along the coastline, so some land areas will receive some of that drizzle, but it won't be very widespread overnight. low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s and highs tomorrow. low 60s at the coast, 65 here in san francisco, mainly mid 70s around the bay shoreline. upper uh- upper 80s to almost 90 in the inland areas but no triple digits showing up tomorrow. just a nice uh- seasonably warm inland

president saturday evening, just hours after a gunman opened fire at a trump rally in butler, pennsylvania. that suspect, identified as 20 year old thomas matthew crooks of bethel, pennsylvania. sources tell abc news that a short time before the former president took to the podium, local authorities were alerted to suspicious activity on the outside of the perimeter and were in the process of looking for a suspect. >> i am aware that law enforcement had responded to a number of reports of suspicious activity. >> investigators are now trying to figure out how that gunman made it up onto the roof. as republicans get set to gather for this week's convention in milwaukee, former president trump arriving, preparing to formally accept his party's nomination. the convention going ahead as planned. but security at the fiserv forum is tight. >> we are confident in the security plans that are in place for this event and we're ready to go. >> in a post on social media, former president trump said he considered pushing this

p.m. right here on abc seven. dublin based patelco credit union says starting tomorrow, its customers will finally have access to online and mobile banking again. those services have been down since june 29th, when hackers hit patelco with a ransomware attack. the bank says customers money is safe. the ceo says its members will not have access to mobile deposit or electronic statements, but they will have visibility into transaction history. happening tomorrow, a san mateo county judge is set to hear arguments over dna and scott peterson's effort to get a new trial. peterson was convicted in the 2002 murder of his wife, laci, and their unborn son, and sentenced to death, but that sentence was later overturned. however, last month, the judge ordered dna testing, retesting on a piece of duct tape that was recovered from laci peterson's pants. a final ruling is not expected until tuesday. peterson

you. that's coming up this week at 1 p.m. right here on abc seven. >> federal officials have approved the controversial plan to allow electric bikes on some of tahoe's trails. according to the chronicle, 106 miles of trails would be opened in the u.s. forest service, 154,000 acre lake tahoe basin management unit. the plan includes building 45 miles of new trails. the forest service is finalizing the environmental assessment document, which is expected to be released next month. e-bikes are currently not allowed on tahoe trails because they are motorized. a san francisco

community leader is using basketball and a big money prize to help bring peace to his hometown. today was the end of the hoop for peace three on three basketball tournament tournament in india. basin shoreline park. it was held for 14 to 18 year olds from the city's bayview hunters point neighborhood, and included a $5,000 prize, but it's not about the money, man. >> it's about the peace. it's about the unity. it's about us showing that we're willing to invest in these young people, man, that we haven't given up on them, and they have someone that really believes in them. and that's going to be a champion for them, you know, and just encourage them to step up themselves because we need the next generation to flourish, because the way it's looking now, it could get ugly. >> damien posey is the founder of us for us bay area. he says his group aims to push peace by uplifting people through community action and violence prevention. joined right now by spencer christian, a great program right there with great weather today as well. >> that's true. and we're hoping or hoping for more great

weather, but i'm sure that was a good one. there thank you jr. here's what's coming our way on the forecast animation a lot of drizzle offshore and some of it even onshore during the early morning hours between about 4:00 and 8 a.m. but then by afternoon it will be nice and dry and sunny. overnight lows will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s. highs tomorrow. low 60s at the coast, mid 70s around the bay shoreline and mid to upper 80s inland. very few locations will reach 90 tomorrow, so let's take a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. even cooler on tuesday with inland highs mainly in the mid 80s. back up to about 90 in the warmest spots on wednesday. so moderate, mild to moderate weather for the first three days of the week. but on thursday and friday, notice the warm up inland mid to upper 90s will be the highs. we're not expecting any triple digits or any kind of serious heat wave like we had the first two weeks of the month, but it is going to warm up significantly as we get toward the end of the week. >> certainly hope those winds stay down. >> yes, keep those winds down. reduce the fire concerns. things are pretty dry and it's going to
