and as we look at the north bay it's cooler. we have the gray sky not yet in our inland valleys. but i do expect the clouds to move into the inland valleys a couple degrees cooler than yesterday. and it was a dramatic cooldown, wasn't it? so today we get to enjoy temperatures where they should be, in fact, a little bit below average by noontime. we're sunny only in the 70s inland 60s around the bay shore and then by later on in the afternoon. it's upper 80s inland, mid 70s around the bay, staying cloudy, cool, breezy at the coast. looks like a pretty nice couple of days to start the workweek, but if you like it a little warmer, we're going to turn it up just a little bit. details on that in a few minutes. good morning frances. >> morning, lisa. morning everyone. we are starting off with a big rig overturned crash. this is in the north bay, but it is way up north past santa rosa, overturned at arata lane and it is blocking the left lane in both directions. minor slowing at the scene. so we'll let you know when this clears up. give yourself extra time if you're

heading through windsor, but once you make it past that south of santa rosa into san rafael, southbound traffic is on the right here. looks good. all the way down towards the golden gate bridge. there are some slow drive times for you. this morning, and of course it's the usual slow and go westbound 580 tracy to dublin, 48 minutes kumasi. >> thank you francis. this morning we are following the latest developments on the assassination attempt on donald trump. there is still a sense of shock over what the country witnessed and what it now means for the weeks ahead. these images have come to define this weekend and in many ways will come to define the 2024 presidential election. the former president bloodied and defiant in the moments following an attempt on his life, an fbi official tells abc news. evidence points to this being the work of a lone wolf, but investigators will not be comfortable giving a motive until they've dug through the suspect's phone and look deeper into his life. we're now hearing about some fateful moments. the butler county sheriff telling

abc news. an officer confronted the shooter on the rooftop. seconds before he opened fire. the sheriff says the shooter pointed his rifle at the officer and the officer backed away. it was a secret service sniper who took out the suspect as his bullets hit the rallying crowd, killing one person and injuring the former president. >> the fbi continues to search for a motive in the shooting. all this comes as a republican national convention begins today in milwaukee. that's where abc news reporter perry russom joins us live with more on how former president trump is responding. perry >> hey, reggie, good morning to you. the stage is set here in milwaukee for a busy week, with his speeches set to start in just a few minutes from now. trump talking to the new york post yesterday saying he is supposed to be dead today. day one of the republican national convention in milwaukee. the trump campaign planning to highlight the former president's plan for the economy as the week

has taken a dark turn. >> i want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics. >> president biden addressing the nation last night. >> you know, the political record in this country has gotten very heated. it's time to cool it down. we all have a responsibility to do that. >> security, a top concern at the rnc. >> we are confident in the security plans that are in place for this event and we're ready to go. it's been an 18 month process. >> trump arriving in wisconsin yesterday pumping his fist in the air. in a new interview with the new york post, trump says, i want to try to unite our country, but i don't know if that's possible. people are very divided. investigators say the man suspected of trying to assassinate trump is thomas matthew crooks, a 20 year old who worked at a nursing home. pennsylvania governor josh shapiro says corey comparator was killed at the rally. his family posting tributes online. shapiro says the retired firefighter died protecting his family. >> he wouldn't want to be

president donald trump. abc seven news reporter amanda delcastillo joining us live at amanda, many americans want to know exactly what went wrong at the rally saturday. >> yeah, kumasi there is a strong likelihood there may have been a problem in the line of communication. that's the initial assessment from a former secret service agent who is now living in the bay area. corey allen served president obama after he left the white house in response to saturday's attempt on donald trump's life. allen says it is too early to point fingers at where the security lapses were. the secret service says its agents fatally shot the suspect after he opened fire from a roof. the shooter was said to be about 150 yards from the stage. former agent allen says his instinct is there was potentially some kind of misunderstanding where somebody wasn't sure of what to do with the information, without clarity about who was to take action. >> and having dealt with radio failures myself. uh- downpours in miami. you know, when president obama landed and air force one and my radio goes down because the thunderstorm came through and stuff like that happened, have the secret

triggered this lad and he committed this horrible act, and he may or may not have talked to anybody. >> crooks is from bethel park, pennsylvania, a suburb of pittsburgh. he was a registered republican who would have been eligible to vote for the first time this year. he had no known history of mental illness. crooks worked in a nursing home as a dietary aide and graduated high school in 2022, where students say he was smart, liked computers and was a loner. investigators confirming they believe this image shows him in high school in april 2022. >> he was always bullied uh- every day. he was just an outcast. >> he is starting to appear like he fits. a pretty common pattern here of individuals that apparently he was bullied when he was younger and those types of humiliation experiences, those grievances. when you combine it with an online environment that's going to feed the grievance and suggest that

violence might solve the problem. uh- often results in these mass attacks. >> while in high school, crooks was rejected from the rifle team, in part for being a bad shot, but did become a member of a local shooting club. records show he had no military experience. his neighbors, stunned that the suspected would be assassin, lived among them. >> how sad for his parents. >> you just never really know somebody at all anymore. and it's kind of shocking. >> the fbi says it's confident crooks acted alone, but they don't know why he acted at all. he wasn't on their radar. he has no criminal record. and what they've seen so far of his digital history offers no useful clues as to why he would do this. alison kosik, abc news new york. >> the saturday shooting is sure to have an impact at the republican national convention all week. abc news is in milwaukee, and we'll have special coverage every night this week. you can watch live at 7 p.m. right here on abc seven. and you can find the latest headlines on the investigation

on today. donald trump preparing for day one of that convention. trump considered delaying the start of the convention until wednesday in the wake of the attempted assassination, but eventually said he wouldn't let that force the schedule to change. we learned in the last few hours, king charles sent a private letter to trump yesterday. buckingham palace did not reveal the details of the letter. meanwhile, the prime minister of the uk said he is appalled by the incident. in a post on x, he wrote we send him and his family our best wishes. >> breaking overnight in the east bay, at least one person has died after a crash on southbound interstate 680 and concord. chp says it happened just before 11 p.m. near the concord avenue exit, near the buchanan fields golf course. there were five vehicles involved. one person was taken to the hospital. their condition isn't known. at one point, officials had to shut down this freeway to clear the vehicles, and as of 3 a.m, all lanes are reopened this morning.

>> the community is trying to make sense of the death of a three year old girl, ella. lorenzo was found dead in san jose saturday. police are now investigating her death as a homicide. ella was reported missing friday after her father failed to show up for a custody swap. he was found dead in san francisco. ellie's mom released a statement calling her daughter the most charming, funny, smart girl. if you'd like to donate to memorial services, her family has set up a gofundme page. >> today, scott peterson's effort to get a new trial will be back in the san mateo county court. attorneys are making arguments over dna testing on a single piece of duct tape. peterson's legal team considers it a key piece of evidence in proving someone else killed his wife, laci, and their unborn son in 2002. a final ruling isn't expected until tomorrow. peterson is still serving, currently serving life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murders. >> if you bank with dublin based patelco credit union. finally, some relief. the bank says

starting today you'll have access to online and mobile banking again. those services have been down since june 29th, when hackers hit patelco with a ransomware attack. the bank says customers money is safe. the ceo says its members still don't have access to mobile deposit or electronic statements, but they will have visibility into transaction history. >> if you have plans to take a hike on some of the many trails around lake tahoe this fall, you may need to watch out for more than wildlife. federal officials have approved a controversial plan to allow some electric bikes on trails. so under this plan, 106 miles of trails will be opened in the u.s. forest service's 154,000 acre lake tahoe basin management union. the plan includes building 45 miles of new trails, the forest service is finalizing the environmental assessment document that's expected to be released next month. the rule could. the rule change could take effect as soon as september. now, e-bikes are currently not allowed on tahoe

trails because they're motorized. >> happening now across california, crews are fighting multiple fires sparked by lightning. this weekend. firefighters in yosemite are putting out nine new fires, all started by lightning. fortunately these are small firefighters in the tahoe national forest counted 126 lightning strikes saturday into yesterday, and that started four fires. containment is improving on all of them. you can see the red on this cal fire map. that's where fires are actively burning. fortunately, the lightning sparked. fires haven't exploded in size as we have seen in the past. cal fire says lightning caused four of our state's most destructive wildfires. we keep an eye on every wildfire across the state thanks to our abc seven news data team. you can use the same interactive tool by heading to our website. it also gives you an idea of fire warnings and air quality. it's on the front page of abc seven news.com. >> good monday morning to you. yes, the lightning was all around the bay area. and we

actually have some good news. we're going to have a weak system, several weak systems to the north. and west of us that will keep that steady onshore flow that typical summertime pattern, the low clouds and fog in the morning, retreating to the coast, increasing the relative humidity and keeping temperatures in check for the first half of the week. then it looks like we will certainly get warmer as we get into the latter part of the week. it's 60 in oakland right now, 56 in santa rosa with low 60s in palo alto. so all of the numbers certainly have cooled down. we are looking at the trend, though, to reverse itself as we get into that second half of the week. so as we see the numbers in the low to mid 80s inland, that is a little bit below average and then beginning to come up, you see the trend thursday and friday could even see about 100 degrees in our inland spots. so we are looking at that high that visited us for so long in early july, kind of wobbling back into the bay by the middle to the end of the week. 82 today in san

jose. that's pretty nice out there. sunnyvale about 80 mid 70s from palo alto to mountain view, low 70s in millbrae starting out. cloudy here. and that clouds the clouds holding on to the shoreline, keeping the city partly to mostly cloudy. mid 60s, maybe some afternoon sun there. low 60s in the sunset district up to the north bay. that breeze helping you out from san rafael in the 70s. you get up towards santa rosa low 80s here. sonoma 82 and on the east bay, temperatures all into the 70s with low to mid 70s for you and oakland and san leandro 79 in fremont today. that's more like it, right? you head inland and still some warmth out there, but only in the mid 80s. so that's a nice day in pleasanton, 90 in brentwood, the accuweather seven day forecast. so we're cool but pleasant the next couple of days. the heat turning up inland come thursday, friday. and it looks like at this point nothing too extreme but above average. and getting set to maybe sweat a little bit inland reggie aqui kumasi. >> thank you lisa. coming up,

on the way with temperatures near average. >> and number six, if you take a look at the traffic maps, it's looking green except for the usual slowdown coming out through the altamont pass. but there is an overturned big rig in windsor. it's blocking each lane of northbound and southbound 101 and causing slowing in the southbound direction. >> number seven at&t is reportedly paid a hacker $370,000 to delete stolen customer data. the hack from 2022 was revealed last week. at&t said the hacker had obtained call and text logs of nearly every customer. >> suddenly we have a lot of tough news to deal with this morning, but we know it's important that we also highlight some positive news for you too. and new data from san francisco police may just be that for you today, new data from the san francisco police department shows crime in the city is now below pre-pandemic levels. property crime dropped 34% compared to the first six months

of 2023. homicides are down 39% so far this year. larceny thefts like car break ins and retail thefts are down 40, and nearly 8000 fewer crimes have happened. this year compared to this point in 2019. >> i mean, we're really focused. we believe on the right people. uh- some of those people have been caught and apprehended and are facing criminal consequences for that. and i think that's driving a lot of the reductions. so the crews that are hitting or have been hitting, a lot of them have been arrested. >> criminologist told our partners at the san francisco standard. targeted enforcement may play a role. however, overall crime is dropping across the nation and they say economic shifts and research shows that young people are less likely to commit crimes. >> a san francisco community leader is using basketball and a big money prize to help bring peace to his hometown. the hope for peace three on three basketball tournament was held over the weekend at india basin

the bay area 59 in fremont. it's 57 in danville. so we have clear skies inland that will change as that marine layer expands. and temperatures in the 50s here, mainly in marin, napa. but notice well to the north, still some heat there holding on in clear lake at 71. so 24 hours ago we were even a little milder. we're cooler. fairfield that southwest wind up to 30 miles an hour. so that's certainly the source of the cooling today. and our inland valleys bringing the temperatures way down. as we look at the next couple of hours, you can see the clouds extend through the san ramon valley. 8:00 then they retreat by about 11:00. we're sunny. we're in the mid 70s inland to near 80. so very pleasant. the sea breeze kicks up, keeping clouds at the coast. here mainly in the 60s, low 60s and then by the afternoon mid, maybe upper 80s inland with lots of 70s around the bay. looks like we're going to keep this forecast into play for the next several days. minor tweaks here and there and then a warm up. we'll talk about

delcastillo abc seven news. >> friends and family are honoring the acts of the man killed at the rally. corey cooper was the former fire chief at a volunteer fire department. a little more than ten miles away from where the shooting happened. he spent his final moments, according to his family, shielding his loved ones from the bullets. his fellow firefighters remember his commitment to protecting his community and his love for his family. >> it's just one of them guys in the morning greeting at church would be the guy. he went from one side of the church to the other, greeting people. one of them smiles that lit up a room uh- he he was a family man for sure. loved his wife and his daughters dearly. >> two other victims are still in the hospital. pennsylvania state police identified them as 57 year old david dutch and 74 year old james copenhaver. their conditions have not been released. both are said to be stable. the trump campaign started a gofundme page to raise money for the victims. it
