>> the rnc will go on as scheduled today, days after someone tried to assassinate donald trump, the former president set to speak today making changes to his speech to unify the country. >> the secret service in question over how someone was able to get so close to the former president. what we're learning about the investigation this morning and a former agent gives his take on what may have happened. >> plus, president biden promising answers and calling for peace, saying there is no place in america for political violence. >> good morning. it is monday, july 15th. >> let's start with a check of our forecast with lisa. >> all right. good morning to you. we are looking at some clouds a lot of cloud cover out there. as a matter of fact, and probably will reach our inland valleys and begin retreating not until mid to late morning. our exploratorium camera. you can see how gray it is right here. it's definitely comfortable out there. 50s and 60s, just some low 60s. redwood city, 62, san jose and the clouds here. the golden gate bridge. visibility

pretty good. 56 santa rosa. the deck is higher and it is more extensive. 59 in concord, we have that breeze. we've had it overnight, allowing for temperatures to be just a few degrees cooler in our inland valleys, taking us back to average. and by 8:00 9:00 we have a lot of fog out there, gray skies. it won't be until about ten 11:00. we get full sunshine except at the shoreline. and at that time, noontime mid 70s to upper 70s for most of you, inland, with a lot of 60s around the east bay, 70s arriving to mid to upper 70s along the peninsula. sunny afternoon, but right around the airport and the coast we're staying gray and cool and we'll tell you how long that trend continues in a few minutes. good morning francis. >> morning, lisa. just got word of a new accident, and it's on the bay bridge on the upper deck heading into san francisco. motorcycle involving injuries. so that's definitely going to slow things down at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's already a slow ride on westbound 80 from highway four to san francisco. is 44 minutes, and that's going to slow down even more with that

new motorcycle crash. here's a live shot of the golden gate bridge. you see some flashing lights in the northbound direction, but really no problems on 101 here, except way farther up north in windsor. there's still an overturned big rig blocking a lane in each direction of 101 at arada, and also southbound 680. highway four to walnut creek is six minutes, but it is very slow making your way through the snow grade on southbound 680 because of an earlier crash. kumasi. >> thank you francis. as you wake up this morning, we are taking a live look at milwaukee, where the republican national convention is getting underway. the head of the secret service revealed this morning. security has been strengthened there after the assassination attempt against former president trump. now, trump is set to speak today overnight. in his first interview since the shooting, he said, quote, i'm not supposed to be here. i'm supposed to be dea. here's what we know. the fbi is still working to determine the motive of the assassination attempt. the shooter is dead.

president biden and vice president harris will be receiving an updated briefing about the shooting in the situation room this morning. now, over the weekend, the president spoke with mr. trump, a call the former president called nice. >> the republican party vows not to let the shooting put a damper on this week's convention. we're expected to see the former president announce his running mate. abc news reporter perry russom joins us live from the convention in milwaukee. so perry, what can we expect today? and how is the former president responding? >> yeah. so for today, the theme is make america wealthy once again. so the plan is to introduce trump's economic plan. but this entire week has already been overshadowed by what happened this weekend in pennsylvania. today, day one of the republican national convention in milwaukee, the trump campaign planning to highlight the former president's plan for the economy as the week has taken a dark turn. >> i want to speak to you

tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics. >> president biden addressing the nation last night. >> you know, the political record in this country has gotten very heated. it's time to cool it down. we all have a responsibility to do that. >> security, a top concern at the rnc. >> we are confident in the security plans that are in place for this event, and we're ready to go. it's been an 18 month process. >> trump arriving in wisconsin yesterday pumping his fist in the air. in a new interview with the new york post, trump says, i want to try to unite our country, but i don't know if that's possible. people are very divided. investigators say the man suspected of trying to assassinate trump is thomas matthew crooks, a 20 year old who worked at a nursing home, pennsylvania governor josh shapiro says corey comparator was killed at the rally, his family posting tributes online. shapiro says the retired firefighter died protecting his family. >> he wouldn't want to be thought of as a hero, but that's that's definitely how he should be remembered.

>> that was perry russom reporting overnight. the director of the secret service issued a statement saying in part, secret service personnel on the ground moved quickly during the incident, with our counter-sniper team neutralizing the shooter and our agents implementing protective measures to ensure the safety of former president donald trump. the secret service is working with all involved federal, state and local agencies to understand what happened, how it happened, and how we can prevent an incident like this from ever taking place again. we understand the importance of the independent review announced by president biden yesterday and will participate fully. >> the secret service is under scrutiny after the assassination attempt on former president trump. abc seven news reporter amanda castillo is here. amanda, many americans are demanding to know what exactly went wrong on saturday. >> and reggie, there is a strong likelihood there may have been a problem in the line of communication. that's the initial assessment from a former secret service agent who is now living here in the bay area. corey allen served president obama after he left the white

house in response to saturday's attempt on donald trump's life. allen says it is too early to point fingers at where the security lapses were. the secret service says its agents fatally shot the suspect after he opened fire from a roof. the shooter was said to be about 150 yards from the stage. former agent allen says his instinct is there was potentially some kind of misunderstanding or somebody wasn't sure of what to do with the information without clarity about who was to take action. >> and having dealt with radio failures myself uh- downpours in miami, you know, when president obama landed and air force one and my radio goes down because a thunderstorm came through and stuff like that happened, have the secret service for a reason and you know, they can correct errors. >> and you just heard from nolan higdon, a professor of history and communication at cal state east bay. he cautions against politicizing the entire secret service. former agent allen says the secret service costs taxpayer money, adding assets are assigned based on threat risk of any given event. but he

says sometimes the problem could be much more basic. and back in 30 minutes to elaborate, in the studio, i'm amanda delcastillo, abc seven news. >> thanks, amanda. we're learning new details about the 20 year old shooter, former classmates say he was constantly bullied. abc news reporter alison kosik has more on what investigators have found so far. >> this morning, authorities are piecing together a profile of the man suspected of taking aim at former president trump, 20 year old thomas matthew crooks, as they try to find the motive. >> obviously, something triggered this lad and he committed this horrible act, and he may or may not have talked to anybody. >> crooks is from bethel park, pennsylvania, a suburb of pittsburgh. he was a registered republican who would have been eligible to vote for the first time this year. he had no known history of mental illness. crooks worked in a nursing home as a dietary aide and graduated

high school in 2022, where students say he was smart, liked computers and was a loner. investigators confirming they believe this image shows him in high school in april 2022. >> he was always bullied uh- every day. he was just an outcast. >> he is starting to appear like he fits. a pretty common pattern here of individuals that apparently he was bullied when he was younger and those types of humiliation experiences, those grievances. when you combine it with an online environment that's going to feed the grievance and suggest that violence might solve the problem. uh- often results in these mass attacks. >> while in high school, crooks was rejected from the rifle team in part for being a bad shot, but did become a member of a local shooting club, records show. he had no military experience. his neighbors, stunned that the suspected would be assassin, lived among them. >> how sad for his parents.

>> you just never really know somebody at all anymore. and it's kind of shocking. >> the fbi says it's confident crooks acted alone, but they don't know why he acted at all. he wasn't on their radar. he has no criminal record. and what they've seen so far of his digital history offers no useful clues as to why he would do this. alison kosik, abc news, new york. >> former first lady melania trump released a statement on x reflecting on what the incident means for her and her family. she writes in part, when i watch that violent bullet strike, my husband donald, i realize my life and barron's life were on the brink of devastating change. she also said the winds of change have arrived. for those of you who cry in support, i thank you. i commend those of you who have reached out beyond the political divide. thank you for remembering that every single politician is a man or a woman with a loving family. >> saturday shooting is sure to have an impact on the republican national convention all week. abc news is in milwaukee and we'll have special coverage every night this week. you can

to be ten 11:00 until it peels back. and not a lot of sun here at the coast, in fact, mostly cloudy. and look what happens into your tuesday. that fog footprint expands well throughout the delta. and then pulling back for it looks like more sun along the coast. the sea breeze with us over about 20 miles an hour today and we'll see temperatures pretty comfortable the next several days. we'll start to warm up by the middle of the week. our inland valleys once again flirting with 100 as we get to that thursday. friday time period. upper 70s today in fremont, mid 70s around richmond and vallejo with 81 santa rosa. the accuweather seven day forecast, a couple of cooler days before we warm it up modestly midweek and then by the end of the week, it's getting kind of hot out there inland. reggie. >> thanks, lisa. still to come, san francisco's most expensive house. the recognizable name who bought the home of pacific heights for tens of millions. then scott peterson facing a judge in just a few hours. the evidence he and his team want to give another look, and an iconic

now, the drive time from highway four to san francisco is 51 minutes. and that means with the metering lights on at the bay bridge toll plaza, things have backed up towards the foot of the maze. so it's going to be a slow ride across the bay bridge. right now you can see it's backed up at a crawl nine miles per hour because of this motorcycle accident. if you're thinking of alternatives, the richmond-san rafael bridge is delay free. westbound 580 point richmond to san rafael, seven minutes a little crowded on the san mateo bridge, but overall still looking good. hayward to foster city 15 minutes and no delays on the dumbarton bridge as you make your way towards menlo park, bart. also great option reporting, no delays. reggie. >> thanks, francis. taking a live look now at the five serve forum in milwaukee. that's where they're hosting the republican national convention starting today. it is all systems go. even after the assassination attempt against former president donald trump, he is, of course, the presumptive republican presidential nominee. when mr. trump makes his acceptance speech this week, he says he'll take advantage of the moment and

deliver a message of unity to meet that moment. trump has spoken to president biden, and he's also received a private letter from king charles, the motive him to why a 20 year old gunman shot the president remains under investigation. last night, president biden denounced the violence in a live address from the oval office. >> there is no place in america for this kind of violence or for any violence ever, period. no exceptions. we can't allow this violence to be normalized. >> we're following the latest on the assassination attempt of the former president. in our next half hour, we'll have what the milwaukee mayor says about security at the convention center breaking overnight in the east bay at least one person has died after this crash on southbound interstate 680 and concord. chp says it happened just before 11 p.m. near the concord avenue exit near the buchanan fields golf course. five vehicles were involved. one other person was taken to a hospital. we don't know their condition. at one point, officials had to shut down the

freeway to clear the vehicles. they reopened just after 3 a.m. today. >> scott peterson's effort to get a new trial will be back in a san mateo county court. attorneys are making arguments over dna testing on a single piece of duct tape. peterson's legal team considers it a key piece of evidence in proving someone else killed his wife, laci, and their unborn son in 2002. a final ruling isn't expected until tomorrow. peterson is still currently serving life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murders. >> if you bank with dublin based patelco credit union, finally, some relief. although it isn't over yet, the bank says starting today you'll have access to online and mobile banking again. those services have been down since june 29th, when hackers hit patelco with a ransomware attack. the bank says customers money is safe. the ceo says its members still don't have access to mobile deposit or electronic statements, but they will have visibility into transaction history. >> $70 million that's how much the widow of apple founder steve

jobs paid for san francisco mansion. the most expensive home in the city, according to the wall street journal. the home is on broadway in pacific heights. laurene powell jobs bought the mansion from a wealthy couple who bought it in 2011 for $33 million. now, initially, they wanted more than $100 million for this home. it was not publicly listed for sale. the previous record for the most expensive home in san francisco was also in pacific heights in 2021. that home sold for more than $43 million. now, i can't even see it. i know i was trying to look online this weekend when i first heard about this because apparently it's the most beautiful home in america. >> all i see are trees and this van, and that's fine, because if you pay 70 million. >> yeah, you want privacy. >> yeah. you never want them to know what it looks like. well if you could invite it you get invited. >> i hope it looks better than what i just saw. >> yeah. >> because to me it's where's the money going. >> they said it's the most beautiful home in america. i

below the next couple of days. in fact, we're looking at some of the remnants of the moisture that was around the bay area over the weekend. had a lot of lightning strikes, fire starts in yosemite, southern california, unfortunately, but the good news is there were small fires. we will have our low clouds and fog each and every day, and that will help temper the afternoon. highs 57 in san francisco, 60. oakland and hayward 62. san jose upper 50s. half moon bay. look at the gray sky here. now the clouds have moved into livermore. also, walnut creek reporting cloudy skies and the breeze over 30 miles an hour through fairfield. so all sorts of things going in our way, going in our favor with the clouds and the breeze to allow for a couple of comfortable days out there. temperatures 50s and 60s to start out. we're near average slightly below as we get into wednesday. thursday we'll see the temperatures come up a little bit and then more dramatically, thursday into friday. lots of 80s here, just low 80s santa clara and san jos,

mid 80s for you in los gatos only in the upper 60s for santa cruz 70s return to the peninsula from the mid to upper 70s the afternoon sea breeze intact, the fog not going far from the shoreline. in fact, daly city in the sunset will have plenty of cloud cover. mid 60s downtown up in the north bay. it will be a nice afternoon. we're going to wait at least till the mid morning hours when we get some of that clearing. then about 80 in novato. look at that upper 70s in napa with about 70 in berkeley, 73 in san leandro, mid to upper 70s. as you get closer to hayward and fremont, you head inland. we've got 86 in concord, 90 the warm spot in brentwood, the accuweather seven day forecast. so we're definitely in the comfort zone today. tomorrow morning clouds, afternoon sun, that sea breeze just slightly warmer wednesday. you probably won't notice much of that, but certainly by thursday and into friday it's getting toasty inland. back to you. >> thank you lisa. now checking in with ginger zee who's live

fair share of you felt that on saturday. but as we get into your monday tuesday time frame, certainly cooler out there. in fact maybe a little bit below average by the time we get to tomorrow afternoon. but this morning, couple of degrees cooler and into the next several hours, we'll get into sunshine by noontime 60s and 70s around the bay with 70s to upper 80s, bayside and inland by later on in the afternoon. francis. all right, lisa, we've been following this motorcycle crash on the bay bridge and that's really slowing things down for folks heading into san francisc. >> it's on the upper deck, approaching treasure island in the left lane. they're trying to clear this accident off towards treasure island, but it has caused a huge backup along the incline section all the way to the bay bridge toll plaza, which is backed up through the maze. in fact, it's really jammed from powell street in emeryville all the way into san francisco. that's a crawl. and then once you get past the crash, it's fine. but the other alternatives for you are the richmond, san rafael bridge and westbound 580 point richmond to san rafael,

eight minutes san mateo bridge, hayward to foster city is 15 minutes. the dumbarton bridge is delayed for you right now, and you may also want to consider bart as an option. >> reggie francis, thank you. today is day one of the republican national convention in milwaukee. here's a live look at the venue where there are questions about security and how a shooter made it so close to former president trump over the weekend. so far, we've learned the 20 year old shooter was a registered republican. records do show he had once donated to a progressive group. he worked at a nursing home south of pittsburgh. the director of the facility says there were no concerns about his work, and that he passed a background check. the fbi is still trying to uncover his motive in attacking the former president, as president biden calls for patience and unity. abc news reporter jay o'brien has more about the president's message. >> my fellow americans, president biden addressing the nation from the oval office, just one day after a suspected gunman attempted to assassinate his rival, former president

dissect video recorded on saturday, many are asking are focusing, i should say, on what they believe are faults within the secret service's actions. we connected with cory allen, a former secret service agent who lives in the bay area. allen served president obama after he left the white house. he says it is too early to point fingers at where the security lapses were responding to saturday's attempt on donald trump's life. initial reports from the secret service claim the shooter was about 150 yards from the stage. they say its agents fatally shot the suspect after he opened fire from a roof. >> my instinct is there's potentially some kind of misunderstanding or somebody wasn't sure what to do with the information or who was to act on it, it tends to just end up engendering a lot of cynicism about these individuals. >> and these organizations that, despite their faults, are critical to our democracy. so i think it's irresponsible to sort of blame the entire organization for whatever faults may have occurred. >> nolan higdon, a professor of

history and communication at cal state east bay, who you just heard from, also adding, we have the secret service for a reason. they can correct errors. former agent allen spoke from experience about communications, saying he's dealt with radio failures himself. one example he gave his radio went down during a thunderstorm in miami when president obama landed on air force one. while he isn't saying that was the case on saturday, he is saying stuff like this happens. reggie, back to you. >> okay, amanda, thank you. experts are looking at what's behind the increase in violence after the attack on donald trump since saturday's incident. disturbing examples of divisive political speech quickly surfaced online. mississippi congressman bennie thompson fired a staffer after she posted on facebook that the shooter at the trump rally needed, quote, some shooting lessons. earlier this year, thompson introduced a bill that would have terminated secret service protections for felons. it did not pass. >> we are an angry, divided nation, and that anger and

wants to give people a glimpse of what the u.s. can be, and called it terrible and sad to watch this situation unfold. over the weekend, we lost three celebrities who made so many people happy, all three of them inspiring in their own ways. doctor ruth westheimer, a renowned icon known for her work as a sex therapist, was 96. she went by doctor ruth and was well known for her radio show sexually speaking and pioneering open dialog about once taboo subjects. she died friday at her home in new york city, surrounded by family. the iconic fitness guru richard simmons died one day after celebrating his 76th birthday. lapd sources tell abc news. he was found dead in his home. they believe he died of natural causes. simmons rose to fame in the 70s and 80s after opening several gyms and releasing his high energy fitness tapes. shannen doherty died after a long battle with breast cancer. the star of

beverly hills, nine zero, 210 and charmed was first diagnosed in 2015. she was treated and went into remission in 2017. in 2020, she said the cancer came back in stage four and spread to her brain and bones in 2023. she was 53 years old. >> this morning, the community is trying to make sense of the death of a three year old girl, ellie. lorenzo was found dead in san jose saturday. police are now investigating her death as a homicide. ellie was reported missing friday after a father failed to show up for a custody swap. he was found dead in san francisco. ellie's mom released a statement calling her daughter the most charming, funny, smart girl. if you'd like to donate to memorial services, her family has set up a go fund me page. >> starting today, you will notice more chp officers if you live in the east bay. last week, governor newsom announced he is quadrupling the number of officers or the shifts that officers have in that area to help crack down on crime. at

least 20 chp officers will now be there seven days a week, according to the governor's office. the increased patrols have left have led to more than 500 arrests in the recovery of nearly 1200 stolen vehicles. the public can now weigh in on a controversial proposed casino in the north bay. the bureau of indian affairs has published a draft environmental impact report for the casino. it would be operated by the coyote nation in unincorporated sonoma county, near windsor. the public can view the report and comment on it until august 26th. the proposal has already gotten pushback from neighbors who are worried about traffic and the town of windsor, which said it would violate zoning in that area. at&t reportedly paid a hacker $370,000 to delete customer data that was stolen earlier this year. on friday, at&t disclosed the massive data breach that it known about since april. according to wired, the company paid that hacker to delete the data and provide a video of proof. at&t says nearly

every customer had their call and text records exposed, including every every number that customers called or texted. even customers of other wireless networks, the number of times they interacted and how long the calls lasted. the company says at least one person has been caught. >> now for your morning money report, home depot will pay three quarters of $1 million in damages after four california counties found the company was not abiding by state law surrounding gift cards. sonoma county's da was one of the plaintiffs in this. the enforcement action alleges that home depot did not honor a state law that allows customers to cash out a gift card when the balance falls below $10. prosecutors also said home depot put expiration dates on gift cards, which was another violation. and i would take a live look at the new york stock exchange as trading gets underway this morning. we're up almost 200 points this morning. >> if you fly delta airlines, you may notice a change starting
