headlines out of the republican national committee convention, where security is on high alert following an assassination attempt. of course, targeting trump. good evening. i'm ama daetz. we have lots of developments tonight, both out of the convention and on the shooting investigation. >> and i'm dan ashley, thanks for joining us. trump is preparing to make an appearance tonight at the convention in milwaukee, which has been overshadowed, of course, by the shooting at trump's rally on saturday. >> abc news reporter maryalice parks has a number of updates for us. >> the great state of iowa proudly cast all of its 40 votes for president donald j. >> trump republicans gathering in milwaukee to formally nominate former president donald trump as the gop presidential candidate. the former president receiving enough convention delegate votes with today's official roll call, some of his children appearing on the convention floor hereby declaring him the republican nominee for president of the united states of america. and trump choosing ohio senator jd

vance as his vice president and running mate. this comes just two days after an assassination attempt on trump at a rally in pennsylvania. the investigation into the shooting growing the fbi says 20 year old thomas matthew crooks fired the shots that injured trump and two other people and killed one man, 50 year old corey cooper. a tour he's hailed as a hero for shielding his family. investigators believe crooks acted alone. the fbi looking through phone and computer records, talking to those who knew him, trying to determine a motive. now, two law enforcement officials tell abc news the building where crooks climbed to the roof and opened fire was a staging area for a local police tactical team there to watch over the crowd. it's unclear how crooks gained access. a source familiar with the matter telling abc news. the day of the shooting, crooks told his father he wanted to go to the gun range, so his dad let him take the gun, which we're told wasn't unusual. now, in his true social post making that announcement, the former president talked about j.d. vance's work as a businessman, as a senator, and

of course, his book hillbilly elegy. and the biden campaign is also out with a statement already responding to this announcement. they said, quote, billionaires and corporations are literally rooting for j.d. vance. they know he and trump will cut taxes and send prices skyrocketing for everyone else. mary alice parks, abc news, milwaukee. >> nearly 2500 delegates are in milwaukee now for the republican national convention. the fbi, secret service and local law enforcement agencies sent a joint threat assessment to law enforcement officials calling for heightened awareness at the convention. no credible or specific threat was identified in the assessment. trump is expected to officially accept the nomination for the third time since 2016. in a speech on thursday night, the republican party will also adopt a new platform that softens its language on abortion and says the issue should be determined by individual states. >> and following the assassination attempt on trump, the secret service now says it will provide protection to independent presidential candidate robert f kennedy jr.

for months, his campaign has been requesting protection after several security incidents, but the white house did not approve a secret service detail until today. in one of those incidents, an armed man was detained impersonating a federal officer at a kennedy campaign event. kennedy's uncle, president john f kennedy, and his father, senator robert f kennedy. robert kennedy, were both, as you know, assassinated in an effort to allow california state lawmakers to use more campaign funds for personal security, is getting new attention following saturday's assassination attempt. democratic assembly member mia bonta of oakland authored the bill. the assembly passed the bill last year and is expected to be up for a senate vote shortly after lawmakers return from summer recess in august and hours after the shooting, trump's campaign started a gofundme page to raise money for the victims yesterday afternoon. the effort surpassed $1 million goal and now has raised about $4.5 million. >> trump's pick for vice

president is no stranger to the bay area. jd vance moved to san francisco after he graduated from yale law school in 2013. his wife, osha, is seen here with vance accepting the nomination. maintains close ties to silicon valley millionaires. vance worked for several years at a venture capital firm owned by peter thiel, a co-founder of paypal and early facebook investor. vance introduced trump to venture capitalist david sachs, who held a fundraiser for trump in san francisco last month. osha worked for a san francisco law firm up until today, she resigned after vance was picked as trump's running mate. she worked on cases defending the university of california against title nine violations and defending the walt disney company against copyright infringement. live coverage of the republican national convention kicks off tonight at seven, right here on abc seven. >> the assassination attempt comes at a time when public officials are facing an unprecedented, unprecedented number of threats. i-team reporter stephanie sierra is digging into the safety of our

local, state and federal officials in light of what happened in pennsylvania. stephanie >> yes, dan, we're specifically looking into current and past protocol that's been called into question when it comes to protecting our local congressional delegation. it's no question we're living in a different political climate, and former federal agents tell us staffing shortages are part of the problem. >> look what happened in the wake of the assassination attempt on former president donald trump. >> new questions are being raised about security oversights impacting elected leaders across the country. it's a san francisco police. >> do you need help here in the bay area? >> a huge lapse in security protocol. when david depape broke into the home of then house speaker nancy pelosi and attacked her husband paul with a steel hammer, documents obtained by the i-team found there was no formal agreement between sfpd and us capitol police to monitor the speaker's property with a security detail and the moments

of the break in. no one with u.s. capitol police was monitoring the security footage, and that's not the only time there was a communication issue ahead of the insurrection. a report from the committee on homeland security and governmental affairs found. us capitol police was warned about the likelihood of violence at the capitol and did not communicate. the intelligence, warning the political discord in our nation is just horrific right now, showing the cracks of america, and we need to reset and rebalance our nation. robert rodriguez is a former u.s. secret service agent that served under president ronald reagan, george h.w. bush and bill clinton. >> the secret service has always had to collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies to perform their tasks because of they just didn't have the resources. >> the reported staffing shortages impacting federal agencies is coming at a time of unprecedented threats. in 2018, u.s. capitol police was

investigating more than 5200 direct threats to members of congress and their staff on both sides of the aisle that jumped in 2020, 2022 and again in 2023. with more than 8000 threat related cases. we've had differences of opinion in our whole country, and that's called a democracy. >> but it doesn't have to be violent. >> americans need to recommit to being americans and to settle our differences at the ballot box. >> it's a real serious problem. there are numerous threats that i've had not the most recent three years ago. fellow from this area is actually in jail now for threats against me and hakeem jeffries. >> according to the us department of state, the political threat climate has been heavily influenced by extremist groups and disinformation in recent years. members of congress are now able to use funds out of their campaigns and budgets toward home security and personal security. you have the same opportunity for our office

security as well. now, us capitol police also launched a new initiative last august to add special agents to further protect congress and dan, they're also working closely with the house and senate sergeant at arms office to enhance security for members of congress at their homes, as well as at congressional events. >> all right, stephanie, thanks very much. want to bring you a live update on the rnc convention and the shooting investigation. we learned today that the fbi gained access to the suspected shooter's phone. let's check back in with abc reporter maryalice parks live at the convention. maryalice, let's start with the investigation into the assassination attempt. what are agents looking for on that shooter's phone under biden and harris, gas skyrocketed to the highest price. >> yeah. and like you said, we learned from the fbi that they have been scouring his phone. they've also been conducting dozens of interviews. you can imagine they're doing both, trying to gain any understanding of his background, but also any

potential motive that has remained extremely elusive at this point. they need to figure out what was motivating him to help them figure out how to prevent this from happening again. >> dan okay, uh, let's turn quickly, maryalice, to the convention itself, where you are live for us, give us a sense of the security measures being taken there. i would imagine they were already going to be tight, and they have probably increased that considerably since what happened over the weekend. >> yeah, without a doubt, this has been designated a highest security level event, the highest level that the secret service ever gives to an event. so they have been planning the security here for months, if not over a year. you actually have to start going through security blocks away several levels of security. it is on lockdown here in milwaukee. but yes, while secret service says that they were not changing in any fundamental way, their plans, they are standing by them. they feel good. you can imagine that

seven news reporter leslie brinkley spoke today with the store's owner and got about 20,000 followers on instagram and was launching a career as a rap artist when she agreed to appear at the grand opening of glamor, beauty supply on telegraph avenue at 40th street in oakland on saturday. >> she perched on this gold throne, a purple and pink floral wall behind her, and posted photos and comments for her followers throughout the afternoon. but at 5:00, a shooter showed up at the store. witnesses to the shooting say they were here. inside the store, they heard yelling an altercation outside and then shots fired. no one wanted to go on camera, but off camera. witnesses said that tanda got collapsed outside this gate on the sidewalk, that a gunman took off running across the street. there are bullet holes and shattered glass. some witnesses hid inside an adjacent donut shop until the coast was clear, oakland police said. paramedics

arrived and tanda god was transported to the hospital where she later died. oakland police said a second gunshot victim showed up at a local emergency room in stable condition. police are asking for the public's help with videos or photos that could assist with their investigation as they try to establish the circumstances around the shooting. another well-known oakland rapper, mistah fab, posted on instagram saying he originally was scheduled to be at the beauty shop saturday, but his plans changed. he described tan to god as a hustling go getter with a world of ambition, drive and courage, and a heart as big as texas. vases of roses have been left outside the beauty store under photos of the late rapper in oakland. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. >> questions tonight about why an amber alert wasn't issued for a three year-old girl reported missing by her mother and later found dead in san jose. abc

news. abc seven news reporter luz pena looked for some answers from police. >> san jose police believe the body of a three year old girl found at a recycling facility in charles street is ellie lorenzo's. we did locate a three year old juvenile who was not conscious nor breathing, and determined that that female was deceased. >> officers on scene did believe that the three year old that we located was ellie lorenzo on friday, ellie's mom requested a welfare check after the three year old's dad did not show up for a custody swap. >> the girl's father was later found dead in san francisco. >> in speaking with the neighboring agencies, i was able to confirm that the father was, found deceased of apparent suicide. >> the father lived in this apartment complex in fremont. this is where fremont police first looked for ellie today. neighbors were shocked to learn of the homicide investigation. and suicide of the father. >> how people can kill their own children. >> some neighbors questioning why fremont police did not deploy an amber alert for the

missing three year old. >> as soon as i saw it, my heart dropped. it was just. it's awful. >> multiple police agencies distributed the child's photo on social media as fremont police searched for the father and the child. the fremont police department has pursued several leads, including contacting all friends and family members in the father's phone. >> we've done numerous welfare checks, both in the bay area and in southern california. >> on the phone, fremont police said. this case did not qualify for an amber alert. mark class, president of the class kids foundation, said more people should have been looking for ellie. they found the father deceased without the little baby and the baby's completely missing. >> i think that completely fits into all of the criteria right there. >> now, three law enforcement agencies are collaborating to figure out what happened to ellie while her family grieves her passing. >> we don't believe there's a public safety threat. we do believe that we have an idea of

what occurred and that this is an isolated incident in san jose. >> luz pena, abc seven news we've been following this story for five years and learned today that one of two bay area men convicted of killing an italian police officer will be released from prison. >> an italian court has approved house arrest for 23 year old gabriel natale yort. he's been in prison in italy since the 2019 killing, but will now be allowed to serve out the rest of his 11 year sentence at his grandmother's home near rome. natalio and his friend, 24 year old finnegan elder, were on vacation when they were confronted by plainclothes police after a failed drug deal. both initially received life sentences. the sentences were reduced because the officers failed to properly identify themselves. >> a dance party that drew thousands of people to san francisco's civic center plaza recently was such a hit. organizers are going to do it again. this time, they're moving the celebration to the embarcadero. our media partners at the sf standard are reporting

night's concert at levi's stadium. police say drivers can expect heavy traffic the day of the concert around the stadium, including highways 101, two, 37, 880 lawrence expressway, great america parkway and san tomas expressway. stadium parking lots open at 3 p.m. the concert is set to start at 730. the stones in town. >> that is awesome. all right. and our weather has been pretty good lately. >> it was nice today. cooled off a good bit. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the forecast. sandy. >> yeah, dan and ama. it's really nice to get a break from the hot weather that we were dealing with for a couple of weeks. it seemed like. take a look at these live pictures right now and you will see. sun is shining no matter which direction you're looking. so despite the fact that we had a lot of cloud cover this morning, most areas have cleared out. it is cooler across many parts. five degrees cooler in concord, down ten in livermore. a few degrees from san jose to the santa rosa area onshore breezes playing a role right now out towards the delta. fairfield 29,

rio vista 25 miles an hour. so do expect this to continue. there's an area of low pressure that's been spinning off the coast that brought us the cooler weather that's still here, keeping that deep marine influence going. but it's also providing the lift for the thunderstorms that have been developing. these are really strong. fortunately, many of them are being accompanied by some heavy rain. so of course fire threat is always a concern with dry lightning. so keep that in mind as we look at live doppler seven here locally. it's pretty quiet looking at those temperatures. we have 80s inland. don't have to worry about the heat in places like brentwood 79 though. in concord right now it is 63. in the city, 75, san jose, 74. in santa rosa and oakland is at 69 degrees. so comfortable weather from our sutro tower camera. a little shaky view there overnight tonight. low clouds spread inland. tomorrow we're looking at sunny and near average temperatures. and then for the end of the workweek, hot weather returns in our inland areas, so the onshore breezes will continue this evening. you will

notice they drop off a little bit as we head towards tomorrow morning. and then they pick right back up again, 25 to 30 mile an hour winds coming off the cooler ocean water will definitely keep the temperatures from really rising too much, so we don't have to worry about the hot weather just yet. as you will notice, the marine layer regroups, gets into some of our bayside communities late tonight, and by tomorrow morning it is going to be pretty gray across many parts of the bay area before the low clouds peel back and you get a lot of sun for the afternoon hours. your morning temperatures anywhere from the upper 40s in places like santa rosa to the low 60s in antioch. i think you may need that extra layer depending on where you are tomorrow afternoon. it should be a nice day, mild around oakland, 70 degrees 80 in san rafael, 78 in santa rosa, 67 in the city, 61. in half moon bay, up to 80 in san jose and mid 80s for our warmest spots like concord and livermore. accuweather seven day forecast. enjoy the near average temperatures because warming begins midweek and it really
