the convention, has been selected as the republican party nominee for president of the united states. >> moments later, trump's pick for vice president, our nominee for the office of vice president of the united states, senator jd vance. >> vance is from ohio, but has strong bay area connections. he worked for several years in san francisco at a venture capital firm owned by peter thiel, who co-founded paypal. his wife, usha, worked at a san francisco law firm until today, taking part in cases defending the university of california and the walt disney company. >> california has the largest delegation at the republican national convention. this is video of the moment the leader announced all 169 delegates for trump. abc seven news reporter suzanne phan spoke with several rnc delegates today and has their take on the day's events. suzanne ama and dan, bay area delegates to the republican

national convention, say they are ecstatic about donald trump accepting the party nomination. >> now they believe trump's vp pick will truly turn things around for the country. the republican national convention is underway and delegates say they are pumped. >> the energy is just absolutely palpable. >> john dennis, the chairman of the san francisco republican party, was there for one of the biggest announcements of the convention. >> donald trump just announced a jd vance junior senator for ohio as his running mate in 2024. >> dennis says delegates are excited about jd vance. he's currently a u.s. senator from ohio, but he once lived in san francisco, worked as a venture capitalist and was mocked by opponents as a san francisco elitist, a guy who came up from, you know, from the from nothing and built himself into a successful, entrepreneur and, and silicon valley investor. >> vance's wife, usha vance, who

appeared at his side during his introduction in milwaukee, worked at a law firm in san francisco but left on monday following her husband's nomination. >> dennis believes vance is a promising choice. >> in my mind, he's the best on foreign policy. he's very skeptical of you know, getting into conflicts. >> former napa vice mayor doris gentry is also a delegate after saturday's shooting at the republican rally. >> the mood is elevated times 1 million after what happened to trump. after that horrific incident, you know, everybody was really pumped and excited to go to the convention. >> gentry backs trump's choice for vp. >> i think j.d. vance is a is a worthy opponent for the for this, election. >> conservative political commentator and activist journalist richie greenberg says j.d. vance is an interesting choice. >> clearly, trump wanted to bring in someone who didn't have much baggage and someone that he

convention to tone down their rhetoric after the assassination attempt on trump. pelosi says the emotional scars of political violence remain in her family following an attack on her husband two years ago in their san francisco home. >> as one whose family has been the victim of political violence, i know firsthand that political violence of any kind has no place in our society. i thank god that former president trump is safe. our thoughts are with the loved ones. >> the assassination attempt comes at a time when public officials are facing an unprecedented number of threats. abc seven news reporter stephanie sierra is digging into the safety of our local federal officials in light of what happened in pennsylvania over the weekend. she's in the newsroom for us, steph. >> yes, dan, we're specifically looking into current and past protocol that's been called into question when it comes to protecting our bay area congressional delegation. now it's no question we're living in a different political climate. and former federal agents tell us staffing shortages are part

of the problem. >> look what happened. >> in the wake of the assassination attempt on former president donald trump, new questions are being raised about security oversights impacting elected leaders across the country. >> it's a san francisco police. >> do you need help here in the bay area? a huge lapse in security protocol. when david depape broke into the home of then house speaker nancy pelosi and attacked her husband paul with a steel hammer, documents obtained by the i-team found there was no formal agreement between sfpd and us capitol police to monitor the speaker's property with a security detail and the moments of the break in. no one with u.s. capitol police was monitoring the security footage, and that's not the only time there was a communication issue ahead of the insurrection. a report from the committee on homeland security and governmental affairs found. us capitol police was warned about the likelihood of violence at the capitol and did not communicate. the intelligence,

warning the political discord in our nation is just horrific right now, showing the cracks of america, and we need to reset and rebalance our nation. robert rodriguez is a former u.s. secret service agent that served under president ronald reagan, george h.w. bush, and bill clinton. >> the secret service has always had to collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies to perform their tasks because of they just didn't have the resources, the reported staffing shortages impacting federal agencies is coming at a time of unprecedented threats. >> in 2018, u.s. capitol police was investigating more than 5200 direct threats to members of congress and their staff on both sides of the aisle that jumped in 2020, 2022 and again in 2023. with more than 8000 threat related cases. we've had differences of opinion in our whole country, and that's called a democracy.

>> but it doesn't have to be violent. >> americans need to recommit to being americans and to settle our differences at the ballot box. it's a real serious problem. there are numerous threats that i've had, not the most recent three years ago. fellow uh- from this area is actually in jail now for threats against me and hakeem jeffries. >> according to the us department of state, the political threat climate has been heavily influenced by extremist groups and disinformation in recent years. members of congress are now able to use funds out of their campaigns and budgets toward home security and personal security. >> you have the same opportunity for our office security as well. >> now, us capitol police also launched a new initiative last august to add special agents to further protect congress. and dan, they're also closely working with the house and senate sergeant at arms office to enhance security for members of congress at their homes. as

well as at congressional events. >> okay, stephanie, thanks very much. stephanie sierra reporting the fbi has gotten into the shooter's phone. they finished searching his car and his house on the day of the shooting, 20 year old thomas matthew crooks reportedly told his father he wanted to go to the gun range, so his dad let him borrow his rifle. local police were inside the building that he was on top of it was a staging area for the local police tactical team doing overwatch of the crowd. that's according to the director of the us secret service, who gave her first network interview since the assassination to abc news. >> who is most responsible for this happening? >> what i would say is that the secret service is responsible for the protection of the former president. so the buck stops with you, the buck stops with me. i am the director of the secret service. it was unacceptable. and it's something that shouldn't happen again. >> our secret service protection has been increased for former president trump, and protection is now also being provided to

robert f kennedy jr and other presidential candidate, homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas promises that an independent review of the shooting will be launched within days. uh- former president trump says his ear is healing fine and that he hopes the bandage will be off by the time he speaks on thursday at the rnc. >> it's expected to be trump versus biden in the november election, but people are talking about replacing biden as the candidate for the democratic party. we spoke with former democratic presidential candidate and founder of the forward party, andrew yang, earlier today on abc seven news. he tells us the political process shouldn't have to be like this. >> the way out is for americans to say, look, this two sided machine isn't working. what it's doing is it's inflaming and aggravating us. and you need a third party that's up the middle, which i'm the co-chair of. we are the third biggest political party in the country by resources, though that's not saying as much as i'd like it t, but i'm joined by figures like governor christie, todd whitman of new jersey, lieutenant

convention. extra security of course. measures are in place for this trip after the assassination attempt on trump. this is a live look in las vegas where air force one is. president biden still on that plane? we continue to monitor the situation. >> new developments. the only initial survivor of the shooting of an alameda family sadly has died. baby wesley, the one year old boy police say was shot by his father, passed away at the hospital. wesley is the fifth member of his family to die from wednesday night's shooting. his father, shane killian, is charged with killing wesley's mother, his six year old brother and his grandparents inside their home. investigators have not shared a motive. killian's coworker told us that he was at work that day and everything seemed fine. killian will be arraigned in court later this month. questions tonight about why an amber alert was not issued for a three year-old girl reported missing by her mother the day before, a body that is believed to be hers was found in

san jose. abc seven news reporter luz pena looked for some answers today from police. >> san jose police believe the body of a three year old girl found at a recycling facility in charles street is ellie lorenzo's. we did locate a three year old juvenile who was not conscious nor breathing uh, and determined that that female was deceased. >> officers on scene did believe that the three year old that we located was ellie lorenzo. >> on friday, ellie's mom requested a welfare check after the three year old's dad did not show up for a custody swap. the girl's father was later found dead in san francisco. >> in speaking with the neighboring agencies, i was able to confirm that the father was found deceased. of apparent suicide. >> the father lived in this apartment complex in fremont. this is where fremont police first looked for ellie today. neighbors were shocked to learn of the homicide investigation and suicide of the father. >> how people can kill their own children. >> some neighbors questioning why fremont police did not

deploy an amber alert for the missing three year old. >> as soon as i saw it, my heart dropped. it was just it's awful. >> multiple police agencies distributed the child's photo on social media as fremont police searched for the father and the child, the fremont police department has pursued several leads, including contacting all friends and family members in the father's phone. >> we've done numerous welfare checks, both in the bay area and in southern california on the phone, fremont police said. >> this case did not qualify for an amber alert. marc klaas, president of the class kids foundation, said more people should have been looking for ellie. >> they found the father deceased without the little baby and the baby's completely missing. i think that completely fits into all of the criteria right there. >> now, three law enforcement agencies are collaborating to figure out what happened to ellie while her family grieves her passing. >> we don't believe there's a public safety threat. we do

believe that we have an idea of what occurred and that this is an isolated incident in san jose. >> luz pena, abc seven news. >> a woman accused of killing a vacaville police officer was in court today, 24 year old serena rodriguez is charged with murder. prosecutors say she intentionally ran over officer matthew bowen as he was conducting a traffic stop last thursday. prosecutors say rodriguez was under the influence of drugs at the time. convicted killer scott peterson appeared in court today via zoom in his bid for a new trial over the murder of his wife, laci, and their unborn son. abc seven news reporter melanie woodrow was in court today as attorneys argue over new dna testing. >> scott peterson fighting to clear his name of murder. a judge hearing arguments today about evidence gathered during the original murder investigation. peterson was convicted in 2004 of killing his pregnant wife, laci peterson, and their unborn son, conner. a new team of lawyers with the la

innocence project took up peterson's case. a judge previously agreed a piece of duct tape found on laci peterson's pants could be tested for dna, with both sides making arguments today for how the testing will be done and by whom. peterson's defense also arguing today that he is entitled to all of the prosecution's evidence, even if it wasn't presented during the original murder trial. in court, prosecutors read a victim impact statement from laci peterson's mother, in part saying when will this end? while talking about the pain of their loss and scott peterson's quote, relentless pursuit to leave prison, prosecutors argued the defense has not met their burden, saying just because they want it does not mean they get it in redwood city. melanie woodrow, abc seven news. >> and now another live look at air force one. we are waiting for that door to open. president biden has just arrived in las vegas, set to speak tomorrow at the naacp's national convention. keep an eye on it. hope to go back in and take a look as soon as he emerges. all right. >> but for the moment, let's

turn our attention to the weather forecast as we start another week on a cooler note. >> yes, we'll take it for now, sandhya. >> all right. we'll keep it coming. okay? ama and dan. tomorrow it's going to be very similar to today. i want to show you a live picture right now. it's absolutely beautiful out there from our san jose camera. it is sunny, 74 degrees right now. as we check out what is happening around the state. it's not a real quiet picture. we have strong thunderstorms developing in the northern california area and the sierra, an area of low pressure spinning off the coast that has been bringing us the cooler weather and the deep marine influence is providing the lift for those storms. the good thing, though, with these storms is we are seeing rain accompanying these thunderstorms and some of it is actually heavy, so we'll keep that going. we don't want to see dry lightning starting new fire. obviously on live doppler seven things are pretty quiet, but that marine layer will regroup and come right back in again later on tonight. seven degrees cooler right now in livermore compared to yesterday at this time. 6 degrees drop in concord.

so certainly seeing inland areas, noticing the drop off in those temperatures right now, sustained winds of 23 miles an hour at sfo, rio vista, fairfield 21 to 25. so definitely a nice sea breeze going and a beautiful view from our pier 39 camera. right now the sun is shining over san francisco, 63 degrees oakland. you're at 68 right now in the 70s, from san jose to redwood city and a live view from our east bay hills. camera showing you clear skies right now. 73 in santa rosa and napa, you're at 66 in petaluma. the warmest spot at this hour is 80 in fairfield. and the highs today only in the mid 80s for our warmest areas. mid 70s concord and livermore. i don't think too many people will complain about this. here's a look at the evening forecast. inland areas will be in the 70s at 7:00. clear skies certainly remaining clear for a few more hours. temperatures dropping from the upper 60s to the mid 60s around the bay, mainly sunny, mid 60s and then eventually coming down into the upper 50s. a little breezy along the coastline, going to partly

to mostly cloudy skies later on tonight. san rafael camera showing you the breezy conditions overnight tonight. low clouds spread inland. tomorrow sunny and near average temperatures and for the end of the workweek, we are talking about a return of that hot weather inland. but for the time being, you've got a nice breeze going tonight. it drops off tomorrow morning and then picks back up again, which will really prevent those temperatures from rising much so up to 25 to 30 miles an hour. that sea breeze certainly will help to push that marine layer in. so at 10:00, it's already across the bay. as we head towards tomorrow mornin, many of you will wake up to some form of low cloudiness. whether it's a lot of it or a little bit of it. and then later in the afternoon, you get a chance to enjoy the sun. just like today, your morning temperatures will be in the 40s to 60s one of our cooler spots, santa rosa at 49 degrees tomorrow afternoon in the south bay, 80 in san jose, 78, in santa clara on the peninsula. pretty mild 73. palo alto 61.5 moon bay. downtown san francisco, 67 degrees north bay. temperatures upper 70s from napa

force one. he is set to speak tomorrow at the naacp's national convention. and again, lots of extra security just to be safe. >> all right. joining us now is abc seven news insider phil matier. phil, we all watched, of course, history unfold this weekend. let's look at the impact on the 24 campaign for all of us and for our country. >> well, i've been talking with operatives and even some congressional people and such about what's going on in their opinion, and they bring up two points. we have this is an historic moment. we've never had a sitting president come out and say, listen, we need to tone down in an election. i mean, that's the first i've heard of that. so the question is, where does it go from here? does america do the parties actually tone it down and say that this isn't the end of the world as we know it? the democracy won't die here, that we will go forward. that is the chance that donald trump has in milwaukee this week. and we should be watching that on abc to see what tone we see coming out of that republican convention. >> he says he's rewritten his

speech, but in what way? he said more conciliatory is what we'll see. >> what that definition is. >> he said he had a barnburner. now it's conciliatory, softening. >> that's why we're going to watch because we're going to want to see what donald trump walks out on that stage. the biden team, however, by issuing that challenge, also puts them in a strange box because their entire line of attack up until now was that donald trump's election would signal the end of democracy as we know it now. and how do you change that this late in the game? so those are the two things that we're going to be seeing. is it going to be historic? yes. it is one way or another this this week and these next couple of weeks are going to be unprecedented. and of course, all anyone is talking about right now is donald trump, which means they've stopped talking at least as much about president biden. >> cognitive abilities. >> how he's doing last week was the story that was absolutely the story. well, they might be stopping talking publicly, but privately they are looking at polling. polling has been done.

it's coming back in. the latest polling shows that they're basically in a lock in some of the key states. and there's concern that trump might surge ahead. so that's what's going on behind the scenes. while republicans are in milwaukee, is that the democrats are saying we've got the clock to decide whether we go forward with this uh- with joe biden or with the replacement. and it's going to be up to joe biden to decide ultimately, right. >> jd vance and kamala harris both have bay area ties. how do they stack up against each other? >> that's going to be fascinating because they both jd vance lived in san francisco for a couple of years while he was a venture capitalist here, very heavy in with the tech companies. how are they going to stack up against each other? that is what america is going to be watching. this is going to be fascinating because in the past we've had theoretical the vice president becoming the president. if there is an assassination or something like that, this is the first time we're actually people are going

shows, a blue hatchback ram into the back gate of the building. the crash knocks the gate off the track, clearing the way for someone to hotwire the spca's largest transport vehicle. the shelter's vp of operations says this isn't the first time they've been targeted.

throne, a purple and pink floral wall behind her and posted photos and comments for her followers throughout the afternoon. but at 5:00, a shooter showed up at the store. witnesses to the shooting say they were here inside the store. they heard yelling an altercation outside and then shots fired. no one wanted to go on camera, but off camera. witnesses said that tanda got collapsed outside this gate on the sidewalk, that a gunman took off running across the street. there are bullet holes and shattered glass. some witnesses hid inside an adjacent donut shop until the coast was clear. oakland police said paramedics arrived and tanda god was transported to the hospital, where she later died. oakland police said a second gunshot victim showed up at a local emergency room in stable condition. police are asking for the public's help with videos or photos that could assist with their investigation as they try to establish the circumstances

drug treatment, mental health support and care. our best neighborhoods team, which focuses on individuals living long term on the street, helped place more than 160 people into substance use treatment. >> all that helped lead to a drop in overdose deaths. in june, 48 people died of overdose, compared to 57 last year. in the first half of this year, san francisco has seen 31 fewer overdose deaths compared to 2023. that is a drop of 8. officials stress the drug crisis is far from over. in san francisco, family members who lost loved ones on the golden gate bridge gathered today to commemorate the addition of a suicide barrier. >> kimberly renee gamboa held a photo of her son, who jumped off the bridge in 2013. she fought to get a safety net installed. the project was completed earlier this year. the net spans the entire length of the bridge on both sides. it's meant to deter, deter suicides and save
