president of the united states, donald j. >> trump with his ear still bandaged. the only physical marker of an assassination attempt. former president trump paraded onto the floor of his party's convention. a characteristically stoic donald trump appeared visibly emotional as he walked through the most faithful of his followers. thank my lucky stars to be living here today. now, the official republican nominee, donald trump, joined his newly named running mate jd vance for the first time in tandem. speaking during a prerecorded speech, the former president said whether you vote early, absentee by mail or in person, we are going to protect the vote. >> that's the most important thing we have to do is protect the vote. >> delegates had waited for this moment for days, throwing their support behind trump's hand-picked running mate. >> i think he's he actually he captures the essence of what the

platform was, which was the forgotten man. and woman. and that's how he rose to prominence. i mean, that's his life story. >> as former president trump took in the moment, so too did the entire arena. there was a tangible sense that this moment might not have been, but for a fraction of an inch at saturday's shooting. reporting in milwaukee, liz nagy, abc seven news. >> former president trump was last in the bay area on june 6th for a lavish campaign fundraiser dinner in san francisco's pacific heights. it was there that some major players in the local tech and venture capital scene came together to pledge their contributions for his candidacy, and the momentum is carrying into the convention. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez is live with this swell of republican support coming from silicon valley, lauren, dan, tonight i spoke with two republicans with bay area organizations who are at the convention. >> both said very positive things about jd vance. one of

them described vance's path from an impoverished childhood to senator as the embodiment of the american dream. >> president biden has become the symbol of an america in decline. this may be our president, but it does not have to be our future. >> opening night of the republican national convention, san francisco tech entrepreneur david sax gave an enthusiastic endorsement. >> i see a party that is strong and unified behind president donald j. trump and his pick for vice president, senator jd vance. >> on monday, 39 year old ohio senator jd vance was announced as the republican vice presidential nominee. vance has moved through different business worlds. a marine corps veteran and yale law school graduate best known for his best selling memoir, vance spent years as a venture capitalist in san francisco before heading into

politics. >> we like people who know their way around the political world, but it's important to have somebody who knows their way around the business world because, you know, this is a country of entrepreneurs. >> jason clark, a member of the california republican party, spoke with us from outside the convention in milwaukee because he's worked in tech. >> you know, a lot of the issues around free speech right now and free expression are very central core tenets of the tech community. and i think he's going to be able to speak to that, especially in a in a trump administration. >> vance was once an outspoken trump critic. in 2016, he told abc news that he didn't see trump offering many solutions. vance eventually changed his tune when he ran for the open ohio senate seat. we spoke with the chairman of the santa clara county republican party who says that's playing politics. >> people understand how politics works around here. the convention and, you know, we saw on the democratic side the way that, kamala harris talked about

joe biden during their primary. >> elon musk posted his support on his platform x congratulations, jd vance. excellent decision by donald trump. >> people have become more comfortable. being out as republican and supporting this ticket. >> well, new campaign disclosure shows some of the silicon valley donors to trump's reelection effort. david sachs donated $250,000. the winklevoss twins, who co-founded a crypto exchange donated in bitcoin. it's estimated their donations are worth more than $1 million each. live in san jose. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> all right, lauren, thank you so much. now to the latest on the suspected gunman in the attempted assassination of donald trump. the fbi now has access to his phone as they try to find a potential motive. on the day of the shooting, 20 year old thomas matthew crooks reportedly told his dad he

wanted to go to the gun range, so his dad let him borrow his rifle instead. investigators say he went to trump's event there. local police were inside the building the shooter was on top of. that's according to the director of the us secret service, who spoke with abc news for the first time since the rally shooting. >> who is most responsible for this happening? >> what i would say is that the secret service is responsible for the protection of the former president. >> so the buck stops with you. >> the buck stops with me. i am the director of the secret service. it was unacceptable. and it's something that shouldn't happen again. >> and tonight, the fbi and homeland security are also concerned over the potential for retaliatory acts. the agencies have seen online references or threats of violence in response to the assassination attempt. abc news has complete coverage of the republican national convention all week. tune in for live reports and expert analysis, starting each weeknight at 7 p.m. right here on abc seven. >> all right, let's go outside for just a moment. check on our

area. tonight we are seeing a slight improvement though, for one of san francisco's deadliest deaths from drug overdoses hit an all time high in the city last year. but a new city report gives hope for a turnaround, it found last month. the number of deadly overdoses dropped by 27% compared to last year. it was a two year low for the city. however, those numbers are just for one month. there is still a long way to go to make it a permanent change. we spoke with mayoral candidate daniel lurie on our 3 p.m. show, who tells us his vision for addressing crime, addiction and homelessness. >> we need a fully staffed police department, a sheriff's department, and a 911 dispatch office. we also need to make sure that we get our police out of the business of being our homeless outreach workers and our mental health counselors. i want a trained clinicians going out onto the street and working with people that are in mental health crisis or in the throes of addiction, bringing those people into 24 over seven crisis centers and making sure that we

get them the help that they need. it's as we told you last night at 11, new police data shows property crime and homicides in the city are also down. >> this year, we will have interviews with san francisco's mayoral candidates all week on abc seven news at three. mayor london breed joins us tomorrow. wednesday is mark farrell, supervisor asha safai joins us thursday, and supervisor aaron peskin is on friday. >> we follow the tragic story of cycling champion ethan boys. since last year, when he was hit and killed while riding in the presidio. and tonight we have new word on the specifics of a plea deal for the driver who hit him today. a judge sentenced the defendant to a year of home confinement, then another year of supervised release, as well as a $25,000 fine. the 81 year old driver pleaded guilty earlier this year to vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, but the deal reduced all charges to misdemeanors. family and friends of ethan told us in march that they had mixed feelings about

the agreement. >> california waste water is reaching very high levels for covid for the first time since last winter. that was already the case for the bay area, but now we're seeing more cases all across the state. this is the fifth summer we've seen a spike in covid, but the main difference now is we have better ways to combat it. everyone will be asked to get a new vaccine in the fall. >> that doesn't really apply for people who are 65 and older, or people at higher risk. those people should get the current vaccine now and then in the fall, they can go ahead and get another dose of the new vaccine. >> health experts say vaccines remain the most powerful tool to prevent serious illness. plus, remember to wash your hands, especially before eating, and consider masking in crowds coming up here, the coyotes are coming out. >> the potential danger creeping around the city tonight. >> plus prime day predictions. amazon's summer mega sale is already showing signs of success and big time sports equal big time business. >> the report showing how much

convention. behind the scenes, breaking new reports in real time. good morning america. tomorrow morning. >> they might look cute, maybe slightly cuddly, maybe not. they are causing problems, though. once again at parks on trails and in backyards, coyotes have grown accustomed to getting closer. and now there are new warnings going out in nearby public spaces. and this comes less than three weeks after a five year old girl was bitten by a coyote in san francisco's golden gate park. >> and now warning signs are going up in parks across the city after incidents involving dogs. abc seven news reporter j.r stone visited one of those parks tonight and got a surprise himself. you're looking at video of the first coyote pup we came across on monday night as we put together. yes, a coyote warning story at saint mary's recreation center field in san francisco. who would have thought anyway, recently, the summer kids camp here was moved elsewhere, and the field closed due to the high number of coyote sightings.

>> it's really important to follow leash laws and try to pay attention to where you're taking your dogs. pay attention to the signage, but where there is one pup, there are often two pups or more. >> there is sometimes a mom coyote and a dad coyote. yes, it seems that it was a family event and five coyotes began playing on the ball field for our camera here in bernal heights. from what we've heard, it's a similar scene in the presidio's mountain lake park dog area, one that is now closed to dogs due to at least three dog coyote incidents in recent weeks. no dogs or humans were injured at this location, but the concern over these animals is there. it seems that most we talked with here have had positive experiences. >> the coyote and him were approaching each other and, you know, in a in a friendly manner. and then we both yelled and stu ran and got o.b. to come away from the coyote. >> they were really playing. i

mean, they were just like, going down uh- the way dogs do with each other and kind of nosing back and forth the beautiful sight of a coyote is not always welcome, though. >> less than three weeks ago, a five year old girl was attacked by a coyote in san francisco's botanical garden at golden gate park. officials later killed three coyotes and linked one of them through dna to the bite. >> the kids were relatively close to the tree line and also relatively close to the den, which are two things that should not happen near coyotes, and then from all accounts, it seems like this coyote kind of was, very stimulated by by all the screaming and yelling and sort of playfulness of kids as they, as young kids are. we kept our distance from this family, though. >> if this was playtime before dinner, we wanted no part of that. nor did those in the neighborhood who say they've seen even more coyotes than this in recent days. here as for the coyote warning, i think the video here speaks for itself. be

careful out there. j.r. stone abc seven news. >> look at that family of coyotes. wow. well, months after antiwar protests happened at colleges across the country, were still following the aftermath. uc regents and campus leaders will not tolerate encampments in the future. they're working to create school policy to consistently handle protests across all of its campuses. according to the la times. state legislators are keeping a close eye on the ucs decisions. they're withholding $25 million in state funding. in fact, until they get a report on changes that are made, students will be notified of the new rules by the fall term concerning discrimination policies, free speech activities and study codes. student codes of conduct. >> amazon prime day starts tomorrow. maybe you heard about it. we may already have a good idea of how much money will be spent, and the e-commerce data firm anticipates sales to hit a record $14 billion for the two

day shopping event. now, it's unclear if that number is because of inflation or if people are looking to save on deals because of higher prices everywhere else. amazon is advertising necessities like back to school gear and electronics. prime day reports more profit year after year. all right. >> in the south bay, the stage is quite literally set for the rolling stones. a santa clara police are issuing a traffic advisory for wednesday night's concert at levi's stadium. police say drivers can expect heavy traffic. the day of the concert around the stadium, including highways 101, two, 37, 8-80 lawrence expressway, great america parkway and san tomas expressway. stadium parking lots open at 3:00. the concert itself is set to start at 7:30 p.m, and the question is, will fans amma get some satisfaction in terms of the weather? >> i would think so because it's been nice lately. not too hot? >> no, it was much cooler today. sandy. >> yeah, and you know what? >> this concert is in the evening. so dan and ama, it is

going to be comfortable weather and great conditions out there. although it will be warmer than what we experienced today. let me show you some live views from our tower cameras. and they are absolutely beautiful. no matter what direction you're looking. today's high temperature is low 60s to mid 80s, right about where you should be for this time of year. certainly was cooler in many areas and the onshore winds are still going out towards the delta 32 miles an hour. rio vista 22, in fairfield. that is why we are going to continue to see the absence of the heat. all right. let's talk about what happened here. the last couple of days it's been cooling because of this trough. that's parked off the coast. it's been enhancing the marine layer. it is about 2000ft deep. also keeping that sea breeze going. but it has provided the lift for those thunderstorms that developed today in the sierra. we are expecting quieter weather tomorrow as we look at live doppler seven, that marine layer beginning to make its push. it will spread later on tonight. your temperatures right now,

anywhere from the 50s to the 60s. for most of you, it's a good night to just open up the windows, get some fresh air, and let's talk about why this is not going to last. as you look at the climate prediction center's outlook from this sunday, the 21st through the 25th of july, they're basically saying near normal temperatures are expected back east below average through much of the central u.s. and look what happens out west above average. it's a 50 to 70% chance of this happening here in the bay area. so be prepared. we're not quite done with the heat yet. from our sutro tower camera. a beautiful view of san francisco overnight tonight. low clouds will spread inland tomorrow. sunny and near average temperatures and for the end of the workweek, hot weather returns to our inland areas. the winds will be definitely calmer in the morning, but picking up again tomorrow afternoon, 25 to 30 miles an hour and gusts will be stronger. this continues into the evening hours, so first thing tomorrow when you get going, you will notice that many

of you will be waking up to low clouds to start the day, and then the clouds will pull away. actually, most areas will see the sun except for a few patches lingering into the afternoon. your morning temperatures anywhere from the upper 40s to the low 60s while inland. but good sleeping weather tonight and tomorrow is a nice looking day. low 60s to mid 80s. similar temperature range. certainly breezy out there as we get used to this. nice weather idea. here comes the warmth. actually, some people like the warmth. wednesday it warms up into the low 90s by thursday. we're talking a lot of mid 90s in our hottest inland valleys and going even higher by friday. so here's your accuweather seven day forecast tomorrow in the 80s we'll switch it over to a warming trend. midweek takes us right on through friday where it's going to be heating up close to 100 inland heat moderates for a day or two. and then here comes the sizzle. it will be back in the forecast with triple digits coming in monday. dan okay sandhya, thanks a lot. >> this year's aids walk is just six days away on sunday, july
