revealing new clues. what the head of the secret service is telling abc news. here's my nightline co-anchor byron pitts. >> yeah, look, there he is. stunning new cell phone video showing the shooter climbing across the roof of a building roughly 400ft away from where former president donald trump was up on the podium speaking. authorities now using this video as part of their investigation. and in another video, witness is telling to warn law enforcement. mike and his wife, amber were standing nearby. >> we noticed the guy shimmying up the roof and then we realized that he had a gun. and then everybody started screaming to law enforcement. >> on the top of that roof. you can see it's a sightline to the stage. it's a problem. it should have been identified. it should have covered the inside of that building was being used as a staging area for local police, according to two law enforcement officials, butler township officials confirming to abc news, a local police officer climbed up to the roof and confronted the gunman.

>> moments before the shooting. >> the officer grabbed hold of the edge of the building, pulled himself up to be able to look and according to what he's told me, shooter turned a rifle, was pointed at the officer. the officer defensive move. got it ducked. fell. lost his. lost his grip on the building. >> a detailed look at the maps where the shooting took place reveals the glaring lapse the shooter located outside the security perimeter where the crowd was checked for weapons. the director of the u.s. secret service, kimberly cheatle, speaking exclusively with my colleague pierre thomas, saying the shooting was unacceptable. >> the buck stops with me. i am the director of the secret service. >> cheadle will appear before congress at a hearing next week. homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas announcing enhancements to official security details for trump, president biden and vice president harris. biden also directing the secret service to protect third party candidate

rfk jr. the suspect has been identified as 20 year old thomas matthew crooks, law enforcement sources tell abc news. the ar style rifle he used was purchased legally by his father in 2013. >> in the weeks before the attempted assassination, law enforcement sources told abc news, crooks purchased dozens of rounds of ammunition, both online and at a local gun shop. he was a member of a gun club here in pittsburgh, and on the day of the shooting, those law enforcement sources told us that crooks mentioned to his father that he wanted to go to the range, and that's when his father turned over the assault style rifle that was used to fire at former president trump, sources told us. the father thought nothing of it. >> investigators say the evidence so far leads them to believe he acted alone. investigators found what they described as rudimentary explosives in crooks car parked outside the rally and at his home in bethel park, pennsylvania. law enforcement does not know what the shooter's

motivation was. he had no military experience. he worked at a nursing home, public records show. he was a registered republican in my class. >> he didn't talk about politics. he kept to himself about that. and there was never anything negative that anyone had ever heard about him. >> the fbi announcing today their search of the shooter's home and vehicle are complete and confirming they have unlocked the shooter's phone. >> what that phone will tell them is that who is who is he communicating with? the shooter before. he will also tell them how many times he visited the site in planning. it'll give us a date. when he started planning this thing, the two rally attendees critically injured in the shooting are now reportedly in stable condition. >> the victim killed in saturday's shooting. 50 year-old cory carpenter hailed as a hero corey was a girl dad corey was a firefighter and most especially corey loved his family. officials say he dove on his family to shield them from the gunfire. >> i'm numb and the only thing i

reince. we see you there at the rnc. the crowd was thrilled tonight to see the former president, though he seemed a bit subdued to the home audience. now we're told he's totally rewritten his upcoming speech. do you think this near-death experience is going to change his demeanor and his strategy moving forward, >> you know, i'm not sure, but i certainly get that feeling right now. i get that today. i've been getting that over the weekend here at the rnc, i saw a triumphant, entry into the arena. but you're right, it was there was sort of a, you know, misty eyed a little bit, sort of a coming together tonight in the arena, defiant, but not, disrespectful. i really think that the tone here has in fact changed. and there is a feeling of gratefulness and an

opportunity, i think, to maybe rewrite the script a little bit, at least moving forward and hopefully maybe not. so much in the short term, but maybe even in the long term. there was a feeling of unity tonight, but there was a reflection feeling tonight as well. a self-reflective air, you know, tone in the air. and i don't know how to describe it to you, but it was very clear, i think people were seeing it as well. >> heidi, does this flip the script? does it affect the tactics for the biden administration and the campaign as they move forward? >> well, i think it has to, especially if donald trump becomes a kinder, more gentler version of his former self, you know, he knows that he needs to get suburban women, he needs to broaden his base. you saw that all through the convention today, bringing union leaders, minority leaders, people to the forefront. but then trump himself coming out looking very

grateful, very subdued, but also very almost presidential and i hate to say that because obviously he's not my candidate, but i think there is possibly a turn. but there's also almost four months left in this race. and so we'll see how long this lasts. >> now, ryan's the major headline from tonight was the vp pick jd vance, once a never-trumper now his number two. what is the trump camp hoping that he can do for the ticket. >> well look i mean he's youthful clearly next generation ohio, came from nothing. you know yale law review. so i mean, he's got a great story. i also think it says that donald trump is very confident that he has this party unified. jd vance is similar in nature to donald trump. it is a pure confidence play. and it's very clear to me that's what this is all about. >> now, heidi, you mentioned that a fair number of african

american speakers were on the stage tonight. even the teamsters chief took the podium. these are usually folks from the democratic side of the political equation. what do you make of that? >> well, i mean, i'm a little disappointed in the teamsters, given how hard we worked to restore their pensions that he would appear in the republican convention. doesn't mean that the teamsters are going to support. but i think it was a statement that we all need to pull together as a country. i want to mention jd vance. i think it's interesting that, trump has turned this corner potentially to a kinder, more gentler, but he picked someone who was pretty aggressive in the aftermath of the of the attempted unfortunate and horrific attempted, assassination. and i think he knows that jd vance stands ready to be that that tougher voice, the meaner voice, maybe the more direct and aggressive voice, while he plays the role of

uniter in chief to send someone out who is potentially the divider, who is going to say what needs to be said in a more aggressive tone, obviously very smart young man, we'll see whether he actually adds anything to the ticket, how reince does this assassination attempt play out on the campaign trail? >> we've seen, you know, obviously, throughout american history, whether it's lincoln or mlk, the kennedys and everything in between, how different is this assassination attempt or is it? >> well, certainly. i mean, it's a wild time of multiple here. you've got, you know, grief, you've got gratefulness, you've tragedy for people. the person died. two people hurt. how does that all play out? i think it's anybody's guess. i think people are still processing what this all is and what it all means. so i think that's just a really good

question, but probably one that will be answered in the weeks to come. >> and heidi, the other major development was that the judge in florida threw out the classified documents case against former president trump. how does this come into play? how does that sort of set the stage for the next four months? >> i don't think anyone really thought that case was going to come to trial before the election. and so it's not a big surprise. obviously today, jack smith said he is going to appeal. we'll see what happens with the case. the other option is for the u.s. attorney in that district to file, because it's not throwing out the case for lack of merit, it's throwing out the case because supreme court has called into question the important appointment of the special prosecutor. and so we'll see what happens in the ensuing days. but i don't think it changes much in the political trajectory, because i think that case was being slow walked from the very beginning. and i never expected that case to come to trial before the election.
