president trump walking into the convention, a large bandage on his ear covering the place he was shot. trump apparently emotional as the crowd chanted fight, fight, fight! echoing the words he shouted while pumping his fist after being shot saturday. trump taking his seat next to senator jd vance, his running mate who had only 20 minutes notice before trump's vp pick was made public. >> he just said, look, i think we've got to go save this country. i think you're the guy who can help me. >> years ago, vance compared trump to hitler and was called a never trumper republican. >> i was certainly skeptical of donald trump in 2016, but president trump was a great president and he changed my mind. >> a former marine who served in iraq, vance rose to prominence after writing hillbilly elegy, a memoir about his life growing up in poverty. the book later turned into a movie. >> you gotta decide you want to be somebody. >> republicans are betting vance, a yale law grad and former venture capitalist, can

appeal to blue collar americans in the rust belt is a symbol of a real change in conservative political philosophy, a move from limited government to lots of government just for conservative outcomes. >> that's going to be a change. it's no more the reagan three legged stool of foreign policy, social conservative stuff, and limited government. >> democrats quick to slam vance. >> he's a clone of trump on the issues. >> vance's echo trump's attack on the legitimacy of the 2020 election. he opposes aid for ukraine, and he opposes abortion rights. even in the case of incest or rape, but says there should be an exception for when the mother's life is in danger. despite the excitement around vance's selection, the first night of the convention struck a more subdued tone in the wake of the assassination attempt. >> they were attacking democrats or attacking joe biden, but it wasn't nearly the kind of talk that you normally hear. we didn't hear about stolen elections. in fact, we heard donald trump saying, it's okay to vote by mail. you didn't have a lot of over the top rhetoric tonight in a win for trump, the head of the teamsters union addressing the rnc for the first

time ever, praising trump, although stopping short of endorsing him. >> i refuse to keep doing the same things my predecessors did. >> it wasn't all smooth sailing. >> and there goes the teleprompter. >> teleprompter issues derailed house speaker mike johnson's speech, prompting him to leave the stage. today's democrat agenda their policies are a clear and present danger to america. senator ron johnson says he gave the wrong speech after a new version was not loaded into the prompter. and then tonight at the convention, the attention now turns to crime, with the theme being make america safe again. andrew, all right, perry, thank you. >> and overnight, another big boost trump. the wall street journal reports elon musk now plans to donate $45 million per month to a superpac supporting trump as the secret service faces new scrutiny after the assassination attempt against former president trump. >> we are learning more about the shooter and a new memo from the fbi now warns law

enforcement to be vigilant of possible violence at election events. here's abc's lana moise. >> this morning, a new fbi and homeland security bulletin sent to law enforcement nationwide reveals on the day of the trump rally, thomas matthew kirk purchased 50 rounds of ammunition from a gun shop in bethel park, pennsylvania. also, that two improvised explosive devices were found in his car and home. also noting his shipping history shows crooks received several packages in recent months possibly containing hazardous material. sources say on the day of the rally, crooks, a member at a local gun club, told his father he was going to the shooting range and that's when his father gave him the rifle used in the attack. fbi investigators say they've conducted hundreds of interviews and scoured his social media and phone, but a motive remains unclear. the secret service director sitting down with our pierre thomas calling the shooting unacceptable, promising

transparency in the investigation. >> and we want to make sure that we examine everything from start to finish and if we need to change our practices, we will absolutely do that. >> so the buck stops with you. >> the buck stops with me. i am the director of the secret service, and i need to make sure that we are performing a review and that we are giving resources to our personnel as necessary. >> some have questioned how crooks was able to carry out his attack in a seemingly secure area. abc news has learned heavily armed police were stationed inside the building, which was being used as a law enforcement staging area, but they did not see crooks climbing up the outside of the building. he had a direct line of sight to the former president, roughly 400ft away from the stage. officials say. a police officer confronted him moments before videos from the scene show people tried to alert police, 86 seconds before the first shots began. following the shooting, trump and biden spoke on the phone, trump describing the call to abc's jonathan karl, saying

it was very nice. he couldn't have been nicer. biden telling nbc the political climate is too heated. >> i've never seen a circumstance where you ride through certain rural areas of the country and people have signs they're standing big trump signs with a middle signs saying f biden and the little kid standing there putting up his middle finger. i mean, that's the kind of stuff that is just inflammatory. the president also acknowledging using the word bullseye while referring to trump on a recent call with donors. it was a mistake to use the word i did. i didn't say crosshairs. i'm a bullseye. focus on him. focus on what he's doing. focus on on on his policies. focus on the number of lies he told in the debate. >> the director of the secret service is due on capitol hill monday for a hearing on the assassination attempt. meanwhile, president biden has now ordered stepped up security for former president trump and for the first time, secret service protection for independent candidate robert f

kennedy jr. after kennedy last year said his request for protection was denied. rhiannon andrew lionel. >> thank you. the justice department is planning to appeal after a judge tossed out the classified documents case against former president trump. judge aileen cannon, who was appointed by trump, ruled that special counsel jack smith's appointment was unconstitutional because it was not approved by congress. cannon cited supreme court justice clarence thomas in her order. >> it's pretty much in many ways, very closely bound to what justice thomas had written in the immunity decision. in his concurrence, we're basically saying that the power that jack smith has exceeds that of what the statutes have pointed to. >> the justice department, under republican and democratic presidents, has been appointing special counsels for years without congressional approval. but jack smith came from overseas in the hague. cannon says smith is a private citizen exercising the power of the u.s.

attorney with little to no oversight. >> a stock surge has the dow opening at a record high this morning. the rally was fueled in part by comments from federal reserve chairman jerome powell, who's indicating that inflation is on the right track. powell says the fed will not wait for 2% inflation before cutting interest rates. most analysts expect a rate cut come september. >> turning to the weather, violent storms overnight left more than 300,000 homes and businesses in the chicago area without power. tornadoes were spotted near both midway and o'hare airports. no injuries have been reported. earlier. the same system spawned tornadoes in parts of iowa, causing some damage but no injuries. thousands of power outages were reported near des moines. >> a father and daughter are the latest victims of the extreme heat in the west. they were hiking in utah's canyonlands national park when they got lost and ran out of water in temperatures topping 100 degrees. much of that heat will stay in place today, so let's

right there at the republican national convention. >> now to a disturbing story overseas. an alleged serial killer is under arrest, accused of killing 42 women in the past two years. some of the victims bodies were found in a quarry. police say the suspect has confessed, but no word on a motive. violence against women in kenya has been on the rise. it's even sparked protests. >> we turn now to the former nfl star, furious over the way he says he was treated on a plane. terrell davis touchdown standing up this morning nfl hall of famer terrell davis demanding an investigation after he says he was unjustly handcuffed and removed from a united airlines flight. the broncos legend was traveling from denver to orange county, california, when he says, my son politely requested a cup of ice. the flight attendant either didn't hear or ignored his request and continued past our row. i calmly reached behind me and lightly

tapped his arm to get his attention. he shouted, don't hit me and left. davis says he didn't see the flight attendant for the rest of the flight, but when the plane landed, six fbi and law enforcement agents boarded the plane, handcuffed him and removed him. davis says he was humiliated, adding that questioning him, the agents determined the flight attendant was inaccurate in his accusations, and the agents profusely apologized. united says it removed the flight attendant from duty while it reviews the incident, saying this is clearly not the kind of travel experience we strive to provide. >> you know, only ones getting taken off the plane. look at us. >> in recent years, we've seen a number of high profile incidents involving black airline passengers. earlier this year, eight black men were removed from an american airlines flight after a white flight attendant complained they had body odor. three of those men told cbs they were suing for discrimination. >> we were discriminated against the entire situation was racist. >> in the wake of that incident, the ceo of american outlined steps to strengthen diversity at the airline. >> new fallout from the chaos
