and nikki haley, who we saw speak just moments ago. we will likely face a new set of rules when it comes to our landscaping. the state is set to revise what qualifies as a defensible space when it comes to preventing wildfires. abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley looked into what you might have to do differently in the next few years to be fire safe. >> defensible space to many californians means clearing dead debris from around their home and cutting overhanging tree limbs. but cal fire is drafting up new rules that could lead local jurisdictions to revamp their ordinances. the new focus is on the five feet closest to your home, called zone zero, and how even things like bushes and fences can catch flying embers and torch a house like the one on the left, compared to the house on the right where wood is more than five feet away. various agencies are now advising the state on the latest fire science, including this former cal fire official. >> defensible space is not new to californians. what is new is

this first five feet, again, based on our research that is critically important to the survivability of homes that snow, five fences attaching to the side of the house, no bushes, no wood mulch and other combustible items, that could potentially ignite, allowing the fire to get to the house. >> south lake tahoe is starting to enforce requirements similar to these this week, forcing homeowners to remove landscaping and wood gates from along their walls in the wake of the caldor fire three years ago that threatened the whole town again, they have language or measures that would help keep us all saf. >> then we would definitely want to consider it. >> as homeowners, we may not like all of the wildfire rules or other rules uh, but the least the state can do is make sure that that those rules are simple and straightforward, and we know exactly what's expected of us. >> senator wiener is authorizing legislation to simplify state

really dramatic happens in the next few days, brandon aiyuk is probably not going to be there. in fact, the nfl network is reporting that aiyuk has asked to be traded. now, aiyuk has been really frustrated with the slow to non-existent pace of contract talks. meanwhile receivers like justin jefferson, jamaar chase amon-ra saint brown, they've reset the market for wide receiver salaries, topping out at $30 million a year, and the niners, they don't want to go that high. they usually find a way to get these extensions done before or during training camp. aiyuk is under

contract for the upcoming season at $14 million, so he really does not have much leverage unless he wants to forgo his paycheck for the year. meanwhile, the receiver who might replace aiyuk at some point first round pick ricky pearsall, has been placed on the non-football injury list. that means he might have gotten hurt working out on his own or, you know, some way. but details of his injury have not yet been released. the major league baseball all-star game is underway in arlington. we'll have the highlights for you at 11. safe to say, giants outfielder elliott ramos did not think he was going to be in this game. just a few months ago. ramos spent the first six weeks of the season in triple-a. injuries on the big club gave him an opportunity in the show, and he's turned into the giants best hitter like it's not even close. ramos hitting 298 with 14 homers. his path to the majors filled with ups and downs just whatever you do, whatever you have to do so you can win your spot, just do it like it is what it is. >> you got to work through it. you got to like you got to go

by smart and final. here's some of the details. klay turned down a two year, $48 million extension offer before last season. he then signed three for 50 with dallas. the math doesn't i mean he left money on the table. he could have taken the two for 48. his agent or klay badly misunderstood the impact of the new luxury tax rules because all the teams are afraid. now the restrictions if you hit what's called the second apron are so restrictive that all the teams are like, no, no, no, no, not not not us. red hot we don't want because it just it just ties you up. you can't do anything to acquire new players. so they misjudged the market and he's in dallas and hopefully it works out right. >> we wish him well thanks larry. all right. coming up next on abc seven live coverage of the republican national convention. then celebrity family feud is on at eight, followed by judge steve harvey at nine at ten and 1030. wheel of fortune and jeopardy! then, of course, stay with us for abc seven news at 11. but that is it for us for now. thank you for
