of boos. but i will tell you, byron, this was not the target audience. everyone in this arena is voting for former president donald trump. n nikki haley was on the stage because they wanted her to make an appeal to independent voters and on what unites us and who you agree with. >> byron: you know as well as anyone emotions are running high after the events this past weekend. you can feel it in the room. how did that play into the speeches we heard tonight? >> reporter: several speak hoarse took the stage behind me fully acknowledge that they just ripped up their speeches. lara trump, trump's daughter-in-law, she talked about those terrifying moments of watching her father-in-law almost be assassinated on live television. that bullet grazing his right ear. and she sort of talked about this image that has really now become a defining image of this

campaign. the former president with his fist up in the air, saying the words fight, fight, fight. the trump campaign hoping that rallies people around him. there's a unifying message. the former president, we're told, is rewriting his speech. this has been a very divisive campaign, including from the former president. we'll have to see whether or not that holds. >> byron: you've been on the front line of this campaign from the beginning. we are grateful. get some rest, and we'll see you again, i'm sure, tomorrow. we'll have continuing coverage of the republican national convention, including remark busy republican vice presidential candidate j.d. vance, tomorrow night. and donald trump and the entire trump family on thursday here on "nightline." we turn now to a terrifying mystery in the bahamas. taylor casey, a chicago woman, missing during a month-long yoga retreat on the island. her loved ones frantic, fearful, and furious about the bahamian authorities who they say are not doing enough to find her. >> i have so many thoughts. i try not to think about them.

i just really try to dismiss them. and just believe that my daughter is alive. >> byron: taylor casey's family is living a nightmare every day. nearly a month now, desperately looking for answers for her whereabouts. >> for those of you who haven't met taylor, it's really a loss. because -- wow. so amazing. and our love is genuine. she just loves people. >> byron: the youth program director from chicago had been in the bahamas for a month-long trip to become a yoga instructor. the ashram yoga retreat on paradise island captured in a video posted to their facebook page. casey was last seen the night of june 19th when she didn't show up for a class the next day. the retreat reported her missing to local authorities. casey's mother, colette seymour, says these were the last messages she received june 18th.

>> taylor also mentioned to me how hard this class was. you know. taylor didn't go into details, about but taylor said," ma, this is hard." when she said that, i felt a concern. taylor's been doing yoga for all of those years. i'm kind of figuring, it can't be the yoga, so what is it? >> reporter: she feels the fact that her daughter is transgender shouldn't impact the investigation. >> what does it matter of taylor's gender? taylor is a human being, an american citizen that's missing in the bahamas. >> byron: in january, the u.s. issued a level 2 travel advisory to the bahamas, warning travelers of rising crime. the company running the retreat telling abc news, the as asking anyone with information on this case to contact the local police. in the interim, it's collaborating with authorities in their investigation. wellness travel has exploded in popularity. it's estimated wellness tourism is worth $651 billion annually

and expected to grow. what's more, most solo travelers are women. >> don't travel by yourself. travel in a group. >> byron: bahamian authorities say they've conducted a full and thorough investigation, adding in a statement in part, "there have been no complaints from u.s. authorities on how this matter has been conducted. in fact, we have been congratulated both by the family and the u.s. authorities. the investigation is still open." >> i don't know who they talking about congratulated them, because it sure wasn't me. i would not congratulate them for doing nothing and finding my child. >> byron: shortly after casey went missing, a u.s. state department spokesperson telling abc news in part, "when a u.s. citizen is missing, we work closely with local authorities as they carry out their search efforts, and we share information with families however we can." but seymour and casey's friend emily williams taking matters into their own hands. they both flew down to the

bahamas the week after casey disappeared to meet authorities and visit the retreat where she was staying. >> we still had a lot of questions about exactly what happened, where was taylor, and what information did the police have. >> when i saw taylor's tent versus everybody else's tent, first thing came to my mind was, segregation. isolation. why is my child's tent right here at the stairway, easy access to anything and everybody else's tent was in pairs? >> byron: casey's bible and journal were in her tent the day she was reported missing. her passport is still missing. authorities retrieved her cell phone in the ocean near where she was staying. >> tried to get access into that phone they found in the ocean to give them clues is to who she may have been texting, calling,er on where she may have gone. >> byron: police holding a presser defending their investigation. >> we had our divers, professional divers from the marine section, came across an

iphone, which we know belonged to miss taylor. >> byron: three days later, casey's family and friends held their own press conference. >> they only found the phone because taylor's niece pinged it and gave them the location. >> byron: they're counting each day and marking the milestones that casey has missed. her 42nd birthday last week. >> we all just want to say, happy birthday. although it's not so happy because you are not here with us. >> byron: they're staying hopeful and also urging others to join in the search. >> there are people who know what happened to taylor. and we want those people to come forward and make that information known so that we can find taylor and bring taylor home. when we come back, we spich gears to the exhilarating return of "the wiz" nearly 50 years later. ♪ come on and ease on down ease on down the road ♪ ♪ come on ease on down ease on down the road ♪

to grant any of your wishes. >> i fell in love with the movie. i was in love with diana ross and michael jackson. richard pryor. oh my god. we would play it over and over and over again. >> reporter: alan mingo jr. takes on this production's title character of the wiz. >> the wizard of oz, where it came from, is one of the biggest folklores in america. you see a lion and a tin man, the scarecrow, you kind of know what the captions are. now you're listening on how we made our character. i feel like our art is becoming educated. for me, it's about finding your community to help meet your path. and you may be disappointed along the way, but you've got to keep going. and you can't believe everyone who crosses your path. there will always be roadblocks. for me, "the wiz" is about that, but to me it's no different than the other otherses of this wonderful story. >> reporter: this latest production updated the dialogue and music to keep up with the times. >> the director was like, we

don't want him to be mean or intimidating the same way as -- that we're used to. we want to do a new spin. and that allowed me to breathe new life and to add my own sort of charm, my own version of -- i call the wiz a black, crazy, willy wonka, in a way. >> reporter: that's a good description. what can viewers expect to see? it a little hip-hop, jazz, gospel? >> yes. my songs are strictly musical theater but our musical arranger and vocal arranger have really taken this show out of the '70s and made a fresh spin with our music. it still sounds familiar. the songs are still songs you heard back then. except it's not grounded in the '70s anymore, it's grounded in today. >> reporter: when was the first time that you had heard of "the wiz," watched the movie? >> oh, i feel like it's been in my life. it's just been there. i don't even remember the first time i watched it or the first

time i heard it. i just remember always knowing it. maybe that's for a lot of people of color. i've just always known it. >> reporter: nish enishelle was invited toa edition after producers came across this tiktok video of her singing "home," an iconic song from the musical. >> i've never liked social media. but when i saw other people putting themselves out there in a way that seemed genuine, i said, maybe this is something that i can do. i can share my story. and i can use this as a way to connect with other people. >> reporter: she started singing after losing her father to cancer when she was just 10 years old. >> it was a struggle for me. things happen, and you go throughout your life, and you think you can handle it. and it's like four years later that you might feel this rush of emotions for what happened. for me, it's important to remember those times when i was low. because it keeps me humbled and

nishelle and alan say they hope to inspire the next generation of young viewers. >> i feel in musical theater, there's not many opportunities to see black joy on stage. it's important, because black people should see this and see that they can do things like musical theater. >> reporter: how does it feel to look in the audience and you see young, old, black, white, just about everybody represented? >> yeah. it's amazing. for me, i want young, brown kids to see what i saw in this show. this is what made me do what i do. but to see kids of all races and colors, i hope they see the same thing. ♪ down the road ♪ >> byron: our thanks to dimarco.
