haley, taking the stage to a mixed reaction of boos and cheers. >> i'll start by making one thing perfectly clear. donald trump has my strong endorsement period. [ cheers ] >> reporter: haley said it was trump who called to ask her to speak at the convention, the form president arriving just in time to watch. his campaign keenly aware of her strong report of independents and moderates who could decide this election. she spoke directly to those voters. >> you don't have to agree with trump 100% of the time to vote for him. take it from me. i haven't always agreed with president trump, but we agree more often than we disagree. >> reporter: haley endorsing the man who once mocked her husband's military deployment and even falsely suggested that as a daughter of immigrants she was not eligible to run for president. >> she's not tough enough.

she's not smart enough. she wasn't respected enough. >> reporter: haley herself called trump a disaster, warning he was unqualified to hold office. >> he is unhinged. he is more diminished than he was. he's not qualified to be the president of the united states. i feel no need to kiss the ring. i have no fear of trump's retribution. >> reporter: now a different tune. >> for the sake of our nation, we have to go with donald trump. >> reporter: she wasn't the only former rival on that stage. >> let's send donald trump back to the white house! >> reporter: florida governor ron desantis was once seen as the greatest challenge to trump, but now -- >> donald trump has been demonized. he's been sued. he's been prosecuted. and he nearly lost his life. we cannot let him down, and we cannot let america down. >> reporter: republicans praising law enforcement even as they still blast trump's indictment and focus on crime and immigration.

as trump works to build support, this week he also reached out to independent candidate robert kennedy jr., asking for his endorsement. a member of kennedy's team recording video of the call. kennedy's son posting it on social media. >> i would love you to do something. i think it would be so good for you and so big for you. and we're gonna win. >> reporter: trump playing into the misinformation about vaccines by repeating inaccurate and debunked information himself. >> when you feed a baby, rob by, a vaccination that is like 38 different vaccines and it looks like it's meant for a horse, not a 10 pound or 20 pound baby. it looks like you should be giving a horse this. did you ever see the size of it? right? you know it's massive. then you see the baby starting to change. >> reporter: this is not accurate. babies are not given vaccines in doses equivalent to horses. they are the product of high quality of studies after decades of research.

they do not cause babies to start changing radically. the video was taken down. monday kennedy releasing a statement. i am mortified that this was posted. i apologize to the president. so back here out on the convention floor some delegates have been spotted wearing a bandage over their right ear similar to the one former president trump was wearing after his attempted assassination. all eyes turn to senator j.d. vance, president trump's running mate. he and kamala harris did have a brief phone call. said they look forward to facing out on the debate stage. j.d. vance expected to speak tonight. >> george: thanks. let's bring in jon karl. we just saw the former president willing to question vaccines in order to get robert kennedy out of the race. his former rivals with remarkable turn abouts. >> reporter: yeah, george. let's face it. there is nothing unusual in american politics about primary rivals coming around to endorse

the winner. that's been a staple at national conventions forever. but this is something different. when you look at what those people that spoke last night have said about him. ted cruz said he is a pathological liar, utterly immoral, that virtually every word out of his mouth is a lie. nikki haley, not only did you hear the things you heard rachel scott describe about trump during the primary, but look at what she said shortly after january 6th. these are the words that i thought of as she took that stage here. she said just days after the attack on the capitol that trump let us down. we shouldn't have followed him. we shouldn't have listened to him. and we can't ever let that happen again. that's exactly what happened and is happening right now at the convention. >> george: bit of that kinder gentler tone evaporated overnight. >> reporter: you could say there was a change in tone by trump

standards. this was not american carnage. this was very harsh attacks on joe biden, on kamala harris. they really went after the vice president here. if the unity they've been talking about, the unity last night was unity of republicans in support, total support of donald trump. >> george: okay, jon karl, thank you very much. robin? >> robin: milwaukee, we know, on high alert surrounding the rnc. chief national correspondent matt gutman is there with details on how police shot and killed a man near the arena. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. it really has been a city on edge, with thousands here for the convention. now residents are demanding to know why out of state police opened fire on a man about a mile from this arena. authorities now releasing new body camera footage of that shooting just hours after it happened. overnight columbus police releasing this video. columbus officers encountering two men fighting.

>> he's got a knife. >> reporter: they run towards them. >> drop the knife! >> reporter: five officers opening fire, killing a homeless man. within minutes the area so close to the rnc, swarming with hundreds of officers and swat teams. you can see the mass of police officers, including tactical teams, just on the other side. there were hundreds of officers here. we're just about a mile from the convention center. residents angry out of town officers opened fire in their neighborhood. >> someone from a whole other state to come and do this to someone here? that make nos sense. >> reporter: the attempted assassination of president trump saturday increasing vigilance at the rnc, where snipers are perched on roof tops, hundreds of bike cops roll through the streets. as night fell a vigil for shark. >> say his name -- >> samuel shark! >> reporter: authorities say those officers were operating on the outer perimeter of the rnc both milwaukee and the columbus

police departments say they are now investigating. i understand some of those ohio officers have left the area, but anger remains. we could see additional protests in the coming days, robin. >> robin: we will indeed see what happens there. okay, matt. thank you. now the latest on the investigation into the attempted assassination of donald trump and questions about the security breach. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is in washington for us. good morning to you, pierre. >> reporter: robin, good morning. the young killer at the center of this investigation remains an enigma. the fbi still working to find a reason for the attack. police have recovered a mountain of evidence showing his fascination with guns and explosives. this morning new details about the final stage of planning from thomas matthew crooks in the hours before he tried to assassinate former president trump. >> take a look at what happened -- >> reporter: sources telling abc news crooks got on the roof not by using the five foot ladder he

purchased, but by climbing on top of an air conditioning unit. was crooks on a suicide mission? sources telling abc news he left his tactical vest in his vehicle, raising questions about whether he intended to survive the attack. abc news discovering new details, suggesting crooks was meticulous in designing several suspicious devices found in his vehicle and residents. the devices had a remote control aspect, intricate wiring and chemicals, though it remains unclear how effective or dangerous they may be. >> the real question here will be how did he plan all this to the degree that we think we did? the odd man out here is the explosives. what was he going to do with those? >> reporter: this comes amid questions about security failures that ended up with trump and three others hit by gun fire. officials tell abc news the secret service actually stepped up security around trump in

recent weeks in response to threats from iran to assassinate him. but despite that, crooks was able to climb onto a roof and fire at trump from 400 feet away. officials say there's no indication of a link between iran and the attempted assassination, but growing outrage about the security lapse. video shows crooks on the roof moments before he opened fire, spotted by bystanders who called for help. >> officer! >> reporter: the head of the secret service saying law enforcement officers were stationed inside the same building when trump's would be assassin climbed on to the roof and opened fire. >> there were local police in that building. there were local police in the area that were responsible for the outer perimeter of the building. i'm being told that the shooter was actually identified as a person of suspicion solo call police department actually put a call out.

>> reporter: officers responded but were not able to stop the gunman in time. local sheriff defending his team, telling abc news each department had been given specific assignments and they carried them out. >> the deputies under my control did their job and went above and beyond after the shooting stopped and the chaos began. >> reporter: in fairness, nobody wanted something like this to happen, and many of the police performed heroically. but the fact remains, we still do not have a why or how that young killer was able to get on that roof and fire away. >> george: thanks. now the latest on president biden. he's on the trail in nevada but still facing pressure to step aside. chief white house correspondent mary bruce is in las vegas with the latest. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. president biden is out here hitting the trail hard, pledging he is all in on this race. but this morning a push to formally nominate biden in the

coming days has some democrats saying not so fast. overnight president biden firing up the democratic party base. >> i'm a life time member of the naacp. and i am all in! >> reporter: glad handing as he reaches out to critical black and latino voters, with polls showing signs their support is slipping. all as he fights to show doubters in his own party he has what it takes to beat donald trump. >> only thing age brings is a little bit of wisdom. >> reporter: biden telling bet overnight that he can't walk away now, with the country so divided. >> i think i have demonstrated that i know how to get things done for the country. there's more to do. i'm reluctant to walk away from that. >> reporter: back on the trail

for the first time since the attack against trump, he's urging americans to cool down the political temperature. but not shying away from drawing a sharp contrast. >> now just because we must lower the temperature, doesn't mean he should stop telling the truth. >> reporter: biden fired up, but some in his party still not convinced. even allies like california congressman adam schiff privately warning donors over the weekend in audio obtained by abc news that biden could hurt democrats' chances. >> i do not think he is the best person to go into this election. i think if he is our nominee, i think we lose. >> reporter: and this morning, some democrats are uneasy with the party's plan to formally nominate biden in a virtual roll call in the coming days, weeks ahead of the convention in chicago next month. in a letter obtained by abc news, some house democrats calling for a delay, arguing that holding the nominating vote this early would be stifling debate and prematurely shutting down any possible change in the democratic ticket, calling it a terrible idea that could deeply under mine the morale and unity

of democrats at the worst possible time. for the first time since he was announced as trump's running mate, this morning we're hearing from vice president harris about j.d. vance. in a video just released she said vance would be a, quote, rubber stamp for trump and his extreme agenda. she said vance would put trump first ahead of the country. >> gio: mary, thank you very much. we're going to turn to new jersey senator bob menendez found guilty in his corruption trial. some democrats are calling on him to resign as he faces prison time. aaron katersky joins us with more on this. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: gio, good morning to you. and those calls from within his own party are only getting louder after he was convicted of taking bribes immediately after the verdict senate majority leader chuck shumer said it would be in the best interest of his constituents, the senate and our country. the jury taking 13 hours over three days to find menendez guilty on all 16 counts including bribery, extortion and

more aggressive. i was like -- that was kind of rude to ask my kids. so they got startled. they ordered their drinks. i remember this. he puts the drinks on the tray, but with force. like slam them down. they say thank you. he doesn't say anything. all right. whatever. asked me my order. i gave him my order. again, kind of slams the drink down. again i'm thinking, what is going on with this guy, but whatever. as he gives me my drink, he starts to move the cart and my son says, excuse me, may i have some ice? he obviously didn't hear my son ask for ice so he moved the cart probably past my seat so my hand was up like, excuse me. then i said, excuse me, can i get some ice. tapped him on the shoulder. he swings his arm back and says, don't hit me. i'm like, dude, i didn't hit you. he rushes up to the front of the plane.

leaves the cart right there. a gentleman in front of me turns around and says, i saw that. like, you didn't hit him. i'm like, course i didn't hit him. as i'm sitting there on the plane. it's bizarre. he's up there for a couple of minutes. i was like, whatever. i started reading a magazine. >> robin: you don't think anything of it? >> nothing of it. he comes back, puts a cup of ice on my son's tray. he takes the cart and takes it back up to first class. about three minutes later, another flight attendant takes over. she brings the cart down, starts servicing the area. that's it. i don't see him for the rest of the flight. >> robin: you don't see him for the rest of the flight. but what did you see when you landed? what did you hear and see once the plane landed? >> that's a different story. when we landed they told everybody to remain in their seats, for whatever reason. i thought it was a medical emergency. i fly a lot so i have seen that. where they say stay in your seat. someone they need to tend to. i have seen that before. again, i'm just reading a magazine.

four, five minutes pass. then my head is down. i could hear, like, the walkie talkies. i hear the gear and wrestling. you can hear when it comes on. you can kind of hear the aws, you can hear people -- >> their reaction. >> robin: who is coming on? the fbi? >> the fbi. big fbi letters on their jackets. >> big as daylight. can't miss it. fbi. i believe it was orange county sheriff department. guys with green. i didn't know who they were at the time, but you could tell it was law enforcement. without any, without anything expressed to me, they walk up to me. the guy whispers in my ear. says, don't fight it. puts cuffs on me. while i'm still sitting down. >> robin: everybody is on the plane? >> everybody is still on the plane. >> he never introduced, acknowledged, confirmed that it was terrell. >> or said, hey, here's what happened. >> here's why we're doing this.

diego's mission beach. it was so quick. these rescuers working to dig up a 16-year-old. ultimately saving her life. >> a female in a sand hole in the beach. >> reporter: this morning this 16-year-old girl lucky to be alive after being trapped in a roughly 6 foot hole of sand. >> got too deep. they realized they needed to get her out. >> reporter: crowds gathering as rescuers raced against time to pull her out. >> little nerve-racking. it was a little too much. it's like quick sand. >> reporter: the whole just 20 feet from the water. >> high tide was at 6 p.m. call started at 5. we will bring extra shovels. >> reporter: after frantically digging for about 15 minutes life guards, park rangers and firefighters seen lifting her out of the sand transferring her onto a gurney, where she put up a peace sign, signaling she was safe. fortunately, while this teen survived, life guards are

pressure. it's really important in life when things are going to happen, which we know they will, that you take things in stride. it's important to breathe before you react. >> robin: take a beat and strategize your next move. >> pick apart the problem and compartmentalize. then solve each element of the problem one at a time. when you break it down it doesn't feel so overwhelming. >> robin: she exudes grace. you have been here with us. just sharing some tips. we talked about mindset. we talked about increasing productivity. purpose. people say yes yes yes. then they're like how do i do this? you say there are three questions you should ask. >> we have three things today that we should focus on when trying to identify our purpose. first thing, seek out new experiences. put yourself in novel

environments, even if it's just introducing yourself to somebody who may become a friend. you're going to reveal to yourself strengths that maybe you didn't know you had. second thing, pay attention to what you're already interested in. mine your curiosity for what your next potential passion project might be. number three, an cower in community. you can ask your loved ones to reflect back what your strengths are. ask a loved one what they find embodies everyday greatness in you. >> robin: sometimes people can really see something that you don't even see in yourself. okay. this is where you get to the questions. you've made the pivot. >> yes. >> robin: you're a lawyer. you made the pivot to the field you're in, and killing it. when people are thinking about it, that's where you say there's three questions you should ask. >> the first one, why not me? we say greatness in others and think, they can do that, that's for them.

why not you? why not you to achieve that thing and more? the second, what is my why? ground yourself in purpose which is the topic of today. number three, this is my favorite personally, what decision would i make if i were twice as strong and twice as confident? number three is asking you to befriend your future self. if we're trying to become stronger, more confident, more intentional, more pupful, we're bridging the gap between where you are today and where you want to be in a year, six months, three months. you're borrowing from tomorrow's bravery. >> robin: we're all stronger than we know. tory, we heard her story about how, thankfully, she was able to stay at home with her children. not everybody has an opportunity to do that. but she did. she was able to take a breath and examine what it is that she wanted to do. especially for care givers.

it's intimidating to want more and to make that pivot. how do you encourage folks? >> i want people to get the love they give to others. the three tips for care givers. assess where you are. meet yourself where you are. take stock of your physical health, mental health, financial health. the second, ask for help. that demonstrates an incredible amount of bravery and strength. your community is there but they don't know how to help you unless you're specific. proclaim loudly, what is it you want for yourself and ask them to help you. >> robin: you talk about a dream scape. what is that? >> a dream scape is a mental depiction of where you want to see yourself in a year. that can be on a vision board or in a journal like we've discussed earlier this week. it is asking yourself the

question, how good can it get? and what if it ends up better than i could possibly imagine? i want folks to paint with every color on their paint brush. >> robin: paint outside the lines. >> that's right. >> robin: delays are not denials. you didn't talk about this earlier. you were working on your book. i remember i was talking to you. you were working on your book. also trying to get an athletic line going. it was too much. you were like, ah. so you put that on hold. but what's happening now? >> oh, yes. so, listen, blessings won't be blocked. i do believe in the divine timing of things. i was working on an athletic line back when i was working on my first book. i was spread too thin. coming out in 2025 i'll have a collaboration with peloton with my designs in the collection. i couldn't be more proud or grateful. >> robin: delays are not denials. no denying you. thank you, robin arzon. i really hope we have really given people tools for their tool kits. we have more on every day greatness and more on tory burch's tools for success on good morning america.com.
