venture capital firm owned by paypal co-founder peter thiel. thiel gave $15 million to support vance's senate campaign. vance flew to san francisco last month to attend the private fundraiser for donald trump in pacific heights that drew dozens of tech, cryptocurrency and venture capital executives. abc news has complete live coverage of the republican national convention all this week, starting at 7 p.m. each night, right here on abc seven. >> let's move now to the deepening divide among democrats over their pick for president. abc news is reporting former house speaker nancy pelosi has approached president biden with concerns about his ability to win reelection. the san francisco lawmaker reportedly told him last week and warned other top lawmakers in the party would start to grow louder in those calls. we're starting to see that become a reality tonight. abc news now reports senate minority leader chuck schumer met behind closed doors with president biden on saturday, saying it would be

best if he dropped out of the race. the biden team says the president responded to schumer and pelosi by saying he is the party nominee and plans to win in november. that's also as prominent california representative adam schiff is now publicly calling on biden to step aside in audio obtained by abc news, schiff is heard privately telling donors he doesn't think biden can win. >> i do not think he is the best person to go into this election. i think if he is our nominee, i think we lose. >> schiff's comments come as a group of house democrats, led by representative jared huffman of san rafael, rally to delay biden's official party nomination. despite that, the democratic national committee is moving ahead with plans to virtually nominate biden ahead of next month's democratic national convention. now, it comes as a new poll from the ap and new york center for public affairs research. public affairs research shows 70% of americans think president joe biden should

withdraw from the race, 70% 65% of democrats polled say biden should withdraw. 57% of americans think former president trump, by the way, should withdraw from the race. >> now, add on to that president biden has tested positive for covid. he had two earlier bouts with covid, two different times in the summer of 2022. he had a primary case and then a rebound case, abc7 news reporter j.r stone is here in studio with more on this uptick that we are seeing across the country. >> jr ama, we're certainly seeing an uptick. but doctors i spoke with believe a combination of a few things are helping in that fight. one is that many people have been infected before. two, many have had their vaccinations and three, there's a belief that these variants might not be as strong as we have seen in the past. nevertheless the president now has covid. president joe biden slowly making his way off air force one in delaware wednesday night. this is one of the first images of the president we've seen since confirmation came in

that he tested positive for covid 19. >> so i think biden being sick is a big deal. but i don't think he's going to suffer any real consequences from this because it is a manageable disease. even in the older population. >> that's stanford's doctor, yvonne maldonado, who says rest is key for someone who has tested positive for covid. the president's press secretary says biden will self-isolate in the days to come. he did eventually put a mask on after getting into his awaiting suv. biden's medical team says he has been vaccinated and has all of his current annual booster doses. maldonado says that is important. >> i think he will be fine in the in the short and long term from this disease, but it's a real warning that we just need to be careful. >> the 81 year old biden has received his first dose of paxlovid, according to his doctor, who noted that the president's respiratory rate, temperature and pulse oximetry

are normal. doctor david smith of uc san diego health was involved in a 2022 study on paxlovid. >> it is specifically good for people who are older, so over the age of 65, the sooner that you start on that antiviral medication, the better. so we try to get it within at least the three days, within three days of symptoms. >> this map of america shows the amount of covid viral activity in wastewater. the darker the state, the higher amount of covid activity. maldonado, though, cautions about looking too far into this. >> we know that there's a lot of disease out there, but we're not seeing a lot of hospitalizations there. i mean, they're up, up a little bit, but we're not seeing high levels of hospitalizations and the death rate is still less than 1. so i think we're in a good place. >> doctor smith's study examined what is called paxlovid rebound. he says when it comes down to it, 10 to 20% of those that take paxlovid still get symptoms

after they stop taking the drug. five days later. despite that, he believes that this drug does the job in preventing severe cases of covid 19. jr stone, abc seven news okay, joe, thanks very much. >> this is a story we're closely following for you. san francisco's civilian police commission voted 5 to 2 tonight to adopt changes to the department's police pursuit policy. the revised policy expands the powers of police officers to chase suspects in their cars. it also okays the use of drones to track wanted vehicles. voters passed proposition e in march, relaxing certain police policies. this is one of them. tensions have been brewing between commissioners about the policies reporting requirement, which mandates annual statistics from chases and who is apprehended. >> that would be a direction to the chief of police, but it would not be because prop e requires it. and it's not required by law. >> so should it be in the dgo

that i leave up to the commission with that 5 to 2 vote by the commission, the answer is yes. >> the policy now needs approval from the police union, which has indicated support. >> the heat is making its way back to parts of the bay area tonight. as we take a live look out from our san jose camera, there are some heat alerts to know about tomorrow. abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is getting us ready with our 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandhya >> yeah, ama, we're going to be dealing with the heat in our inland areas tomorrow. so let me show you some live pictures right now. here's why not everyone is going to have to deal with it. we have some fog out there from our tower cameras. as you can see, a heat advisory starts at 10:00 tomorrow morning and it runs until 11 p.m. friday. it is for the valleys and the mountains inland. risk of heat related illnesses will be going up. so first thing in the morning you start off with fog in the afternoon, quickly heating up into the mid and upper 90s inland. 97 in antioch, 96. in

it's called guns to garden for a reason. not only will people receive money for firearms, they turn in, however, they will also get a garden tool that was forged from a gun that was previously turned in. all the guns turned in this saturday will also be turned into garden tools. >> the federal government is weighing how to handle the future of ai. it's something we follow very closely here at abc seven news tonight. california congressman adam schiff, who's running for senate, is pressing google for answers about how its experimental ai overview function works and a letter to google executives. schiff specifically wants to know how the ai feature handles misinformation and how users are warned about results that may not be accurate. google has argued the bad information is generated on topics where there is not enough high quality data to draw from. the letter reads in part, quote. more must be done to adequately ensure that google can remain a trustworthy

>> you never know. i mean, they could come back, right? dan and let me show you a view from earlier tonight. this is the sunset at 829 from our sutro tower camera. just a gorgeous view. it was a warmer day today for many areas, but the fog rolling in is an indication that we still have the marine influence going. so it's not going to be hot everywhere, but it's certainly going to be heating up the next two days. temperatures rising above average in our inland areas, upper 90s to low 100 seconds. be prepared for this heat, especially if you're sensitive, because the heat risk will be increasing tomorrow. inland areas will be in the moderate category. so that's the areas where you'll see some of the hottest weather. and the reason for all of this, the warming trend started today with this ridge of high pressure retrograding. it's going to continue to build as it does. we'll see those temperatures rising the next two days. here's a live view from live doppler seven perspective and certainly fog down below. visibility is starting to drop as the marine layer is compressing just about

1000ft right now 75 degrees in brentwood, but it's in the 50s in san francisco. so quite the spread here. as we look at the 24 hour temperature change, nine degrees warmer in concord, up eight in fairfield running two degrees warmer in san jose from our east bay hills. camera you can also see that fog layer headlines next two days heating up inland to overnight tonight. fog near the coast and the bay and your weekend outlook. the heat eases briefly, so it's not going to be quite as hot for your weekend. we start off tomorrow morning with the fog, 50s and 60s. there might be a little mist in drizzle as well in the afternoon 80s inland by noontime. still some patches of fog may linger in the afternoon, but you will notice that our inland communities pop up into the 90s for the hot spots. your morning numbers will range anywhere from the low to the upper 50s. unless you're out towards antioch, then you're in the 60s and watch out once again for that fog tomorrow afternoon in the south bay. 83, cupertino 88. in san jose, mid 90s around gilroy and morgan hill on the

peninsula, 85 in redwood city along the coastline. mid 60s. it will be a mild one right near the coast, with enough of a sea breeze and some fog lingering. 73 downtown san francisco in the north bay, you're looking at triple digits around cloverdale, but outside of the bay area, 97 in santa rosa, 93 san rafael in the east bay, 79 in oakland, 80 in hayward head inland. and this is where it's going to feel like summer, as it should. 98 in brentwood, 96, livermore, 97 in concord. so the biggest difference between the last round of heat and this round is this one's not going to be as intense. and it's going to be a couple of days. so upper 90s then low one hundreds friday as we head into the weekend temperatures drop off, breeze picks up, and then the heat returns with those triple digits inland but 60s coast side. so we'll have quite the spread. something to please everyone dan very nice andy. >> and it's on sunday. we're worried about the weather, but it looks like it's going to be
