biden last week that she and lawmakers worry he's dragging down the party. a pelosi ally saying the speaker does not want to call on him to resign, but she will do everything in her power to make sure it happens. >> one person who has been out there publicly defending biden told me just a short while ago, biden is going to see the whole house of cards come down soon. as for that meeting in rehoboth, delaware, i am told that this was a one on one meeting. just the senate leader and the president and the chuck schumer forcefully made the case that it would be better for biden, better for the democratic party, and better for the country if he were to bow out of the race. >> a white house spokesperson overnight saying the president told both leaders he is the nominee of the party he plans to win. earlier, after an effort to make biden's nomination official by the end of july through a virtual roll call, the democratic national committee rules committee says no virtual voting will begin before august 1st. the move possibly intended to buy more time to convince biden to drop out of the race

and then back here at the convention. trump speaks tonight. we're being told he rewrote his entire speech after the assassination attempt over the weekend. also tonight, melania and ivanka trump will be here. andrew. >> all right, perry, thank you. we turn now to the assassination attempt on former president trump and new details on the timeline concerning what the secret service knew and when. here's abc's andrea fujii. >> this morning, new questions in the trump shooting investigation, according to lawmakers briefed by the fbi. the secret service knew the shooter was on a roof nearby 20 minutes before he took his first shots. >> he should have been eliminated one way or the other within 1 or 2 or three minutes. so the only thing i can come up with is just a total breakdown of communication. >> video obtained by abc station wtae also shows what law enforcement believes is thomas crooks walking earlier nearby the campaign rally, at one point

looking towards the crowd. sources say he had walked towards the security entrance with the magnetometers, did something suspicious and was approached by authorities, but then faded into the crowd. lawmakers say the fbi has provided this timeline. at 5:10 p.m, crooks is first identified as a person of interest. a full 62 minutes before the first shots. at 530, he spotted with a rangefinder, which can be used to determine distances for target practice. sources say he was able to get on that roof by climbing over air conditioning units at 552, he spotted on the roof by the secret service a full 20 minutes before the shooting. at 602, trump takes the stage. 612 crooks fires those shots. a sniper then killed crooks 26 seconds after he fired the first shot. >> it is a tremendous hole in security at a time when security of people like obviously former president trump, president biden

and people that are vulnerable to being attacked and gets threats almost daily that you just cannot take any chances. >> at the republican convention, several senators confronted secret service director kim cheatle stonewalling attempts. cheadle has agreed to testify monday on capitol hill as she faces more calls to resign. the staffing of the trump rally is under intense scrutiny, with local authorities claiming they warned the secret service they would not be able to provide enough officers to cover all of the buildings. sources say the secret service had asked for a police cruiser to be stationed at that building, but that request was denied. meanwhile, trump, at a private event in milwaukee, recalled how fortunate he was to survive the attack. >> but i got lucky. god was with me, i tell you. >> sources say a search of the shooter's phone revealed he had looked up the date of trump's rally, as well as dates for the democratic national convention in chicago, but still a motive

for the attack remains unclear. andrew. rhiannon. >> all right, andrea, thank you for that. new jersey senator bob menendez is denying reports that he plans to resign in the wake of his corruption conviction. a growing number of fellow democrats say they are willing to vote to expel him from the senate. menendez could face decades in prison for bribery and extortion. >> now to more wild summer weather from flooding and tornadoes to delays on the rails, it seems like every corner of the country has now been impacted. this morning, the aftermath of more weather emergencies across the nation, more than 80 patients evacuated from this arkansas nursing home flood waters inundating the facility. >> there was water probably about two foot up in the patient's room in missouri. >> water submerging cars. oh it's gone. >> there goes the black car. >> vehicles swept away in a saint louis suburb after 6.5in of rain in 24 hours. in new york, downpours, flooding roads and lightning illuminating the

he takes center stage. good morning america this morning. >> new video from april's crane collapse in fort lauderdale florida video. here a woman driving that suv survived and was able to get out of the vehicle, but a construction worker did die in that collapse. another woman in another car was seriously hurt. >> nasa is canceling a mission to the moon. the so-called viper moon rover was supposed to land near the moon's south pole and search for ice, but the program has been plagued by cost overruns. nasa spent about $450 million. >> oh, we turn now to the west coast and justice for hundreds of sailors involved in a disaster during world war two. this morning, hundreds of black sailors have been exonerated, 80 years after a disaster nearly claimed their lives. back in 1944, a pair of enormous explosions rocked a port in

northern california. port chicago. >> there were actually two explosions, one after the other, and it shook the entire east bay. it shattered windows as far away as san francisco, and it registered as a 3.4 on the seismograph at uc berkeley. >> it wasn't just property that was demolished. >> 320 men were killed, scores more were injured. >> most of the dead were black sailors. loading. the ships with no training in handling munitions and few safety measures. after the explosions, the survivors refused orders to keep loading the munitions. the supervising officers, who were white, were given hardship leave, but the black sailors, 256 of them were court martialed. >> there moved to a different location, they were moved to mare island. they were asked to continue doing that work, and they stood up for their civil rights. >> many agreed to go back to work, but 50 held out. they were charged with mutiny. but yesterday the pentagon announced all 256 will now be exonerated.
