booster doses. the president's doctor says he first received his his. he received his first dose of paxlovid and his respiratory rate, temperature and pulse oximetry are normal. doctor david smith of uc san diego is involved in a 2022 study on paxlovid. >> it is specifically good for people who are older, so over the age of 65, the sooner that you start on that antiviral medication, the better. so we try to get it within at least the three days, within three days of symptoms. >> doctor smith says the drug prevents severe cases of covid. the diagnosis couldn't come at a worse time for the president. he's facing a critical point in his reelection bid. calls from his own party to drop out of the race are growing louder and stronger, despite his efforts to shut them down. abc seven news reporter lena howland joining us live in lena, you have reaction from top democrats. kumasi. >> that's right. this is something we've been seeing a lot of in the aftermath of the

debate between president biden and former president trump at the end of last month, more democrats calling on biden to step aside. a source tells abc news former house speaker nancy pelosi went to biden a week ago about concerns over his candidacy. she warned other top lawmakers in the party would start to grow louder in those calls to drop out of the race and it is happening. abc news now reports. senate minority leader chuck schumer met behind closed doors with president biden on saturday, saying it would be best if he dropped out of the race. here's abc's jonathan karl. >> one person who has been out there publicly defending biden told me just a short while ago, biden is going to see the whole house of cards come down soon. as for that meeting in rehoboth, delaware, i am told that this was a one on one meeting. just the senate leader and the president, and that chuck schumer forcefully made the case that it would be better for biden, better for the democratie

country if he were to bow out of the race. >> house minority hakeem jeffries made a similar plea that's also as prominent california representative adam schiff is now publicly calling on biden to step aside. an audio obtained by abc news. schiff has heard privately telling donors he doesn't think biden can win. the biden team says the president responded to schumer and pelosi by saying he is the party nominee and plans to win in november. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news lena, thank you. >> taking a live look at milwaukee this morning with the republican national convention wraps up today. former president donald trump is expected to speak tonight and officially accept the party's nomination. republicans are suggesting trump take a gentler tone in his speech in light of the assassination attempt. and he has said that he had rewritten his acceptance speech, emphasizing a call for national unity. >> today, stonewalling attempts. you owe the people answers. >> you owe president trump.

>> this was the scene of the republican national convention yesterday, when a group of senators confronted secret service director kimberly cheadle over her handling of security during trump's rally on saturday, cheadle refused to respond to any of the senator's criticisms. federal authorities are working to learn the shooter's motive. law enforcement sources tell abc news. investigators found a post on the gaming platform steam. they believe the suspected shooter wrote. it said, quote, july 13th will be my premier watch as it unfolds. abc news reporter andrea fujii gives us a timeline of his movements. the day of the attack. >> this morning, new questions in the trump shooting investigation, according to lawmakers briefed by the fbi. the secret service knew the shooter was on a roof nearby 20 minutes before he took his first shots. >> he should have been eliminated one way or the other, within 1 or 2 or three minutes.

so the only thing i can come up with is just a total breakdown of communication. >> video obtained by abc station wtae also shows what law enforcement believes is thomas crooks walking earlier nearby the campaign rally, at one point looking towards the crowd, sources say he had walked towards the security entrance with the magnetometers. did something suspicious and was approached by authorities. but then faded into the crowd. lawmakers say the fbi has provided this timeline. at 5:10 p.m, crooks is first identified as a person of interest, a full 62 minutes before the first shots. at 530, he spotted with a rangefinder, which can be used to determine distances for target practice. sources say he was able to get on that roof by climbing over air conditioning units. at 552, he spotted on the roof by the secret service a full 20 minutes before the shooting. at 602, trump takes the stage. 612 crooks fires

those shots. a sniper then killed crooks 26 seconds after he fired the first shot. secret service director kim cheatle has agreed to testify monday on capitol hill, as she faces more calls to resign. sources say a search of the shooter's phone revealed he had looked up the date of trump's rally, as well as dates for the democratic national convention in chicago, but still a motive for the attack remains unclear. andrea fujii abc news, new york again tonight is the final night of the republican national convention. >> abc news has complete live coverage starting at 7 p.m. right here on abc seven. >> a change in the san francisco police department's chase policy. the city's civilian police commission voted 5 to 2 to adopt a revised policy expanding the powers of police officers to chase suspects in their cars. it also okays the use of drones to track wanted vehicles. voters passed prop e back in march, relaxing certain

police policies, and this is one of them. tensions have been brewing between commissioners about the policies, reporting requirement, which mandates annual stats from chases and who is arrested. >> that would be a direction to the chief of police, but it would not be because prop e requires it. and it's not required by law. >> so should it be in the dhiego that i leave up to the commission? >> well, with that five two vote by the commission, the answer was yes. the policy now needs approval from the police union, which has indicated support. heads up for bart riders. starting today, you're going to run into some construction at the civic center station in san francisco. bart is going to be replacing the old fare gates with these next generation gates. those are the ones that are supposed to cut down on fare evasion, improve safety, and just be easier to maintain. gates at the seventh street entrance will be replaced first, and then the crews will move to

other gates. work is expected to take a few weeks. >> this morning we're getting reaction to the big announcement from salesforce, san francisco's largest private employer is mandating most workers come back to the office starting october 1st. we told you about this yesterday on abc seven mornings. depending on a person's job, employees will be required to be in the office 3 to 5 days a week. it's a big turnaround for a company that has allowed work from home since the start of the pandemic, and this is welcome news to restaurants that rely on foot traffic around the salesforce office in downtown san francisco. >> friday was our best day before the pandemic. now there's one of the, you know, not not the same, an to abc seven news said the lack of office workers has been the single biggest reason downtown has struggled to recover since the pandemic. >> as for the employees, people we spoke to say that reaction has been mixed. >> 5-10 this morning in the

on its first day yesterday, the oakland alameda water shuttle service had to be halted because of a mechanical issue on the boat. when it is running, it will shuttle people between oakland's jack london square and alameda landing. it's supposed to make 30 trips back and forth every day. we're waiting on san francisco bay ferry to hear whether the shuttle is going to be running this morning. >> drivers in oakland know all too well about the city's pothole problems. under a new transportation leader, oakland is hoping to ramp up that work with particular focus on underserved communities. abc seven news building a better bay area reporter leon melendez explains what's been keeping oakland behind. >> think about this for a hot second in 2021, oakland city council passed a 300,000,005 year plan to fix about 400 miles of roads by 2027. how's it going? so far? >> ballpark number in the last two years is about 100. >> oakland may not reach its target. josh rowan, the now head of oakland's department of transportation, arrived three

months ago from atlanta. >> i feel in some ways this is like karma for me because i was in another major american city saying, at least we're not oakland. and so it has been known nationally i did. i did say that, and it was a national thing. we knew oakland had the worst streets in america, and so kudos when the decisions were made to go to the voters, to get the money to invest in the infrastructure. now it's our job to deliver, and that's what we intend to do. >> there's still much to do. here's 36th street and market back in april. today, the same stretch of road. nothing has improved. last april, we measured a huge pothole near laney college. it's still there. this was park boulevard near highway 13 in april. still the same. rowan says there are challenges in city government that need to be addressed. the first is the lack of personnel needed to actually coordinate the work of repaving. >> we're about 30% vacant across most of our departments, so when you're picking up the phone and

saying, why is no one answering? it's because no one's there. >> warren logan is a city planner who's now running for city council. last april, while riding his bicycle. this pothole, which is still there today, sent him to the emergency room. he says things would move a lot quicker if the city council would give the transportation department more authority to do the work. without the council having to approve every project. >> we actually have dollars to pave our streets. you and i are paying taxes and measure you to pave our roads, but it does require that your city council gives the authority to the department of transportation to go get a contractor to pave our roads. it's bureaucracy at its finest. >> let's see how the new guy does. in the meantime, the plan has now shifted slightly to focus on neighborhood streets and underserved communities in oakland, leon melendez, abc seven news. >> the fight over closing san francisco's great highway to cars permanently is about to rev

up. today, a group is planning a convoy of cars to protest the plan, saying that it will severely impact residents and visitors. a man is breaking down that debate for us this morning. >> reggie san francisco voters will decide in november if the great highway along ocean beach will be permanently car free. supervisors are proposing a two mile ocean front recreation space in promenade. it would be from sloat to lincoln boulevard. the park would include improved accessibility for people with disabilities, play structures, and a separate space for dogs. cars would be diverted to sunset boulevard. the goal is to reduce pollution around the beach, but opponents say closing the great highway would cut off access for so many people. they say the road is a commuter's thoroughfare to get to and from work, and patients and medical staff at the veterans hospital use the great highway every day. supporters of the closure say traffic moved smoothly on other nearby streets, and the traffic is below pre-pandemic levels. they also say car free weekends allow more people to visit, with about 10,000 people every

weekend. supporters say an oceanfront park is the best use of the coast, and now is the time to plan for the future. we know today's car rally protest starts at 10 a.m. at lincoln and great highway. back to you. the desk kumasi. >> thanks, amanda. one of the one of san francisco's newest parks will be adding a tasty new upgrade. plans are in the works for a large food hall at presidio tunnel tops, so they're calling it the mess hall. it will include an all day cafe, a specialty market, a cocktail bar, counter service two. it will offer both made to order foods and grab and go bites that you can take into the park. it will occupy a historic 6000 square foot building that stood on that property for more than 100 years, and it is set to open sometime next year. >> fantastic. cool. >> i mean, it's already beautiful. >> it really is. >> it's so nice over there. >> it is. and they have that field station where like supposed to mimic a base camp and how scientists do experiments and you can go in

and explore and they have artifacts in there. specimens please believe. when i saw that was open at the park, i was like, i'm going right to that thing. that's cool. it was packed with people just curious about what it's like to be a scientist in remote areas. >> i love this, yes, and now you can get your food, hang out, get something to eat, hang out in the park, get that sunshine today. >> we do have a risk of some heat out there today. it's not the hottest day we have this summer, but certainly those who are sensitive to the heat. you do want to take precautions because we do get pretty warm this afternoon. you look at the heat risk map today. you're not seeing any magentas or really any reds. those are the most extreme categories for most of us. we're underneath this yellow category which is just a minor heat risk. areas inland. we'll go into the 90s today. that's a moderate heat risk. so we will be warm today. that heat advisory kicks in here at 10 a.m. so looking at our forecast inland today it will get warm mid to upper 90s for daytime. highs today well above average around the bay shoreline. we have some patchy cloud cover giving way to sun. pretty quickly this morning. temperatures are mild in the mid and upper 70s and then along the

coast. we do have fog this morning in spots. some coastal drizzle. it turns partly cloudy this afternoon and numbers in the 60s. so highs today. the heat advisory is in effect for the south bay 88 in san jose. but 95 in morgan hill will hit 83 in cupertino along the peninsula. it's mild, 81 in palo alto, warmer in redwood city at 8579 in san mateo will keep it in the 60s along the coast, across the city today, we'll stay in the 60s under a mix of sun and clouds close to the ocean. but downtown it's sunnier and warmer at 73 today in the north bay, it is hot. heat advisory in effect 100 in cloverdale, 97, in santa rosa, 93 in san rafael, 96 in sonoma, napa, a hot 91 this afternoon in the east bay. we get that sunshine pretty fast this morning. it is warm, upper 70s, mid 80s, 77 berkeley, 79 oakland, but 85 in castro valley and then inland. it's a hot afternoon. we'll get those numbers into the 90s, if not the upper 90s later on today, overnight tonight, we will see just a little bit of cloud cover along the coast. clear skies inland and numbers in the 50s and low 60s heading into friday.

mayoral candidate mark farrell about his 20 year plan to revitalize downtown san francisco. the plan includes building tens of thousands of new affordable housing units and improving public safety by adding more police officers. he also wants to add new tax incentives for employers to bring employees back to the office at least four days a week during a briefing yesterday, farrell also made comments about the work being done by current mayor london breed. >> her lack of proactive planning and vision for downtown has our recovery stuck in cement. we cannot continue to throw spaghetti against the wall with our economy here in san francisco, it erodes faith that our city has its act together. >> all week long we've had mayoral candidates on our show abc seven news at three. farrell joined that news cast yesterday. >> because what we're missing is that vibrancy, right? there's a ghost town. there's a shell

effect of downtown. we need to cure that. building a brand new park at the foot of market street in front of the ferry building. you know, an amazing opportunity to reframe an entrance of san francisco from the ferry building, but also create that green space for families that are going to move downtown, for people that live and work downtown to make sure that they have open space as well and reinvigorate that part of san francisco. >> farrell says san francisco's downtown has had the worst recovery of any city during the pandemic, and that that's unacceptable. mayor breed's campaign spokesperson responded to farrell's plan, saying in part, quote, humans will land on mars and flying cars will be traversing the city. by the time farrell's plan is complete. he went on to say the mayor implemented her 30 by 30 plan for downtown to bring 30,000 new residents and students to downtown by 2030. breed's campaign also says she has already passed prop c to convert vacant office buildings into housing. our interview is with the san francisco mayoral candidates continue today. supervisor asha safai joins us

its mission with a water seeking moon rover because of its unexpected cost and launch delays. the space agency says the viper rover was supposed to launch last year, but it just kept getting pushed back because of extra testing and increased cost. the rover was supposed to explore the moon's south pole. the project cost about $450 million so far. astrobotic technology provided the lander to nasa, and it plans to fly its griffin moon lander next year. some local high school students are wrapping up an invaluable summer experience. hundreds of sf usd high schoolers did internships this summer. one of the programs is working at ucsf's kanbar center for simulation. these students learned and practiced skills like giving chest compressions, learning how to use an aed, and drawing blood because they've come here after their experience, they want to pursue careers in healthcare, which is incredible because oftentimes they may not have considered it otherwise. the six week summer
