party's nomination as another faces more pressure from within his own party to end his presidential campaign. >> a live report from the republican convention in five minutes time. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley, and i'm ama daetz. >> we will take a deep dive into all the political developments today. first, though, let's return to the heat. oh yeah. >> a heat advisory is in effect for cities away from the coastline. these live cameras show the areas under the grip of hot temperatures. most in the north and east bay. >> abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian is tracking the heat, and spencer is expected to be even hotter tomorrow. >> it will be if we don't return to the heat. the heat is certainly returning to us. here's a look at our current temperature readings and you can see we have readings in the mid to upper 90s in most of our inland areas right now. and upper 70s around the bay shoreline. so it was a hot day today. it's going to be even hotter tomorrow. and we have a heat advisory in effect through 11 p.m. tomorrow night through for all of the bay area locations away from the coast and bay. so let's take a look at how hot it's going to be tomorrow. we're talking about

highs of 105 at santa rosa, 104 at concord, fairfield and antioch, 103 102 at livermore, and even around the bay shoreline. tomorrow we'll see upper 80s to about 9091 degrees in the hottest spots there. now we'll get a little bit of a break over the weekend as the heat eases a bit. i hesitate to call it a cooldown, but it'll be an easing of the heat as uh. the inland areas will see highs in the low to mid 90s and a few upper 90s, and on sunday, even less hot than that. but next week we'll see temperatures climbing back into the triple digits in our inland areas on monday, and it could last the entire week ahead. i'll have the accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later. dan and ama. >> all right, we'll check back. thank you. spencer smoke from wildfires in northern california is expected to impact air quality here in the bay area tomorrow. there is currently though no spare the air alert. >> you can always keep an eye on the heat and other weather issues where you live. with the abc seven news bay area app, it gives you access to the same

forecast tools that our weather team uses every day. download it wherever you stream abc seven news. >> new developments in the investigation underway after the attempted assassination of former president trump, investigators have revealed thomas crooks visited the rally location twice before the shooting. they say he had images of both trump and president biden on his phone, and his search history included daetz of the dnc, as well as future trump events. however, five days since the attack and there is still no word on a motive. >> meantime, the list of democrats who want president joe biden to reconsider his reelection campaign is growing. we learned today that former president barack obama has privately expressed concerns to allies about biden's candidacy. abc seven news reporter ryan curry has a look at the role. some california congress members are playing in the push to get biden to step aside, while the republican national convention wraps up concerns from the other party's candidate are growing. >> abc news reports former house

speaker nancy pelosi told president biden democrats could lose congressional seats if he stays in the race. close pelosi ally adam schiff, who is running for senate, said i believe it is time for him to pass the torch. >> this is nothing like any election i've seen in my lifetime, and i think we have to go back way back to see anything even close to it. >> at saint mary's college, professor steve wolpert has been closely monitoring this race. he thinks biden's chances of winning grow smaller each day rather than holding on against all the odds and taking not only the presidency down, but also congress, because he's polling behind the democratic candidates in all the competitive senate and house seats. the concern amongst democrats is not just about the presidential race, but about a possible trickle down effect, professor wolpert says many of his young democratic students are not thrilled about a possible trump versus biden rematch, and that could affect their voter turnout, potentially affecting other races. >> at this point, we have to stick with the president or if

the president decides to step aside, the only viable alternative is the vice president of united states to step up. >> luis aleman is a member of the young democrats of california. he says the party has to be united in a decision about who is on the ticket. >> if hitting each other publicly over the head with a mallet is going to work as to somehow turn out voters, if not right, voters want to see a stable party and a stable platform. >> president biden's campaign continues to say he won't drop out. our campaign is not working through any scenarios where president biden is not the top of the ticket. >> he is and will be the democratic nominee. >> but with down ballot democrats raising concerns, professor wolpert says if a change is coming, it needs to happen fast. >> it's such a disruptor to the campaign process and the organization and the fundraising. so the practical side of it is really complicated and no one knows exactly how that would work out. getting someone else's name on all

ballots for example, we reached out to several bay area congressmen, including representatives ro khanna and josh harder, but they have yet to return our calls. >> ryan curry, abc seven news tonight it will be donald trump's turn in the spotlight at the republican national convention. >> he is set to formally accept the party's nomination in his first major public address since being wounded in that assassination attempt. abc news reporter maryalice parks is live at the convention in milwaukee with a look at what we can expect tonight. maryalice >> yeah, dan, just moments ago, former president donald trump entered this convention hall. look, he normally on the campaign trail focuses on attacking president biden. but we are told that after that assassination attempt over the weekend, he completely rewrote his speech. the republican national convention in milwaukee building to this moment tonight, former president donald trump, twice impeached, criminally convicted, facing more criminal indictments, having survived an assassination attempt now set to

parks, abc seven news dan maryalice, we've heard since the assassination attempt that the president, former president, throughout his speech that he was planning to give and has rewritten it. >> i don't know if that's still going to hold tonight there in milwaukee on the floor. what are you hearing from republicans about what to expect from the former president tonight? surprisingly, when he answered the phone. >> yeah. the big question is whether he goes on attack against president biden. he so often does on the campaign trail. but so far, i will say the tone here at the convention has been moderated just slightly. it'll be interesting to see if he brings up the 2020 election, if he brings up january six. these are normally big parts of his stump speech, but we're told it's going to be different tonight, so we all can't wait. >> dan yeah, we shall see. and we've also heard that he may not even mention president biden's name once. so we'll see what happens. maryalice parks, thank you very much. live in milwaukee. >> and let's take a look at some of the other main speakers scheduled for tonight at the rnc. mike pompeo, former secretary of state. alina habba,

donald trump's attorney. she was recently named a senior adviser on trump's campaign. political commentator and writer tucker carlson, then donald trump scheduled to take the stage around seven tonight when he will accept the gop nomination. and watch it all right here as it happens, live coverage of the republican national convention continues tonight at seven here on abc seven. >> building a better bay area focuses now on the issue of homelessness and the debate over a scheduled encampment cleanup in oakland. abc seven news reporter anser hassan explains that a court decision paves the way to remove that high profile encampment. >> michael pah'-huh-roe has been living along the coast of the bay bridge toll plaza for almost a year. he was told. you'd have to leave by friday morning by court order. he now has until tuesday. >> that's good news. uh- all of us need a couple more days. honestly, to try and find a place to go. >> last month, the u.s. supreme court ruled cities have the authority to enforce bans on people sleeping and camping in public places. oakland is taking

action on this encampment because it faces daily fines from the san francisco bay conservation and development commission if the people don't leave. >> it's been difficult in every every single city i've gone to, there's they don't have the resources, crutchlow says he knows this isn't a long term solution, but he doesn't have the resources to go elsewhere. >> and the cities and counties don't have the resources either. >> clearing out the encampments is one thing, but providing housing for those people is completely different. >> palma glazov is a senior manager at 211 alameda county, which provides resources to those who are unhoused. she says the county doesn't have the shelter beds for those leaving the toll plaza encampment. >> it's just making it harder and harder to live. but that's not going to solve the issue of them trying to get back on their feet, because everybody wants to be inside, but they can't find a way in. >> alameda county board of supervisor president nate miley hopes a multibillion dollar regional bond will pass in november to help fight homelessness. he says the county is exploring sanctioned encampments as a solution where

we can ensure safety and services. >> if we have to declare an encampment because it's causing a public health, a public safety and environmental health type issue or concern, perillo says his next challenge by tuesday is not just to find a place to live, but also somewhere safe. >> there's no resources out here that are just close by. the only thing that is out here is it's safer than the city in oakland, anser hassan abc seven news. >> developing news now. all eastbound lanes of the bay bridge are back open after a really strange sequence of events. there is still a backup. you can see that from our south beach tower camera. around 215 this afternoon, two cars crashed on the eastern span. one rolled over. sky seven is showing us the damaged car being towed away. that's on the left hand side. now after the crash. this is where things just got very strange. the driver of that car jumped off the bridge. the coast guard rescued him from the bay and took him to a hospital. chp is still investigating what initially even caused that

crash. >> very strange. the new oakland to alameda water shuttle could resume service tomorrow following a shutdown yesterday. on the same day it launched, the free shuttle made its debut yesterday as we reported, but was not able to complete all of its scheduled runs because of a mechanical issue. it remains closed today. a spokesperson from the city of alameda tells us the vessel has been repaired now and test runs with no passengers could begin tonight. the shuttle runs between oakland's jack london square and alameda landing. >> murder mystery inside a five star hotel room in bangkok, and it has ties to the bay area. the possible link, and likely motive. >> also here, a landmark hospital is coming to the east bay. our first look at the future of health care tonight, the biden backlash and plans for a virtual nomination. >> plus, how will donald trump's rnc keynote differ from what was written before the shooting? more americans turned to world news tonight with david muir the

oakland ties may be involved. abc seven news reporter suzanne phan explains her possible connection inside a grand hyatt hotel suite in bangkok. authorities found plates of food uneaten. they also found empty tea cups. authorities also found bodies all around the hotel suite, according to police. traces of cyanide were found in teacups at the five star hotel, bangkok's deputy police chief says six people died from apparent poisoning. police are investigating whether a financial dispute may have motivated the deaths. four of them were vietnamese nationals, two were vietnamese americans, including sherri chong of oakland, who was 56 years old.

property records link chong to a three story home in oakland. >> it seems crazy. >> next door neighbor steve truman says it was around 6 p.m. wednesday when he saw several people show up in front of the home connected to chong. >> there was a van and a police, and it looked like an undercover police officer here looking up that way. and i had no idea what was going on. >> truman doesn't recognize chong's name or photograph. truman says a large asian family lives in the home right next door to him, and they're related to the family that live in the house right behind truman. he's stunned to hear about the local thai to suspected cyanide poisoning. >> oh, absolutely. >> other neighbors don't remember seeing chong, either. do you recognize this woman? >> no. >> sad as tragic. but it's on the other side of the world. and granted, the person that died is connected to this. >> bangkok police say they believe that one person in the group administered the poison to others. they found that chong was alone in the room when the teen food were delivered, and that video shows the rest of the party arriving shortly after. family of the two victims also told police that they had

invested nearly $280,000 to other members of the party, and they were all meeting up to sort out their financial issues. the investigation is still underway in oakland. suzanne fawn, abc seven news. >> this morning, protesters hit san francisco's great highway to fight a potential closure that would make it car free 24 over seven. some people who live nearby drove in caravan today to demonstrate against a november ballot measure that would permanently close the great highway between sloat boulevard and lincoln way. many sunset district residents say drivers use neighborhood streets to go around the closure, causing congestion and noise. >> it's very disruptive to the elderly people who are trying to put their kids to sleep, people trying to walk in the neighborhood and it happens as soon as it's closed. it's not like it doesn't happen all weekend. it happens all weekend. and if you were to close it permanently, it would happen all the time. and it's all day and night. >> opponents of the ballot measure want to keep the current setup, with the great highway

closed only on weekends. proponents want the area to become a permanent oceanfront park in the east bay. >> oakland is getting a new children's hospital. university of california regents have signed off on construction of the new ucsf benioff children's hospital on the current oakland campus. the new building will include access to outdoor space for patients, families and staff, and space inside the hospital for families to stay with their child during their care. the $1.5 billion hospital is scheduled to be completed in 2030. >> iconic band the rolling stones still having an impact in the south bay a day after their big show. what happened after the band's concert that affected those most in need? >> spencer christian, another wave of july heat has arrived. i'll have the accuweather seven day forecast coming up in just a moment.

sent us this photo of a large metal rooster that was stolen from the front of his store. the rooster is about six feet tall, and employees have been wheeling it out for display at the winchester boulevard business for at least five years. the owner says the thieves rolled it down the sidewalk yesterday afternoon and loaded it into a vehicle. the store specializes in garden art and supplies the rooster is valued at $5,000. that's a shame. people will steal anything. >> it's insane that. yeah, that's too bad. okay, let's check on our weather because, ooh, it's getting hot. >> it is. and getting hotter still. i think spencer christian is here with the forecast. >> it is getting hotter. you're right about that. we may get a little break over the weekend, but tomorrow is going to be challenging. here's a look at what's going on in the atmosphere. that's bringing us this weather. you can see a big area of high pressure over the four corners area of the southwest. with this clockwise circulation. then up to our northwest, you see counterclockwise circulation around an area of low pressure. there so that tight pressure gradient between the two is generating an onshore flow that

is quite brisk right now. and in fact, it's creating a little bit of a shallow marine layer. not enough to cool areas away from the coast, but it is providing some cooling at the coastline. we have 33 mile per hour gusts at san francisco airport right now. sfo here in the city of san francisco, 37 mile per hour surface winds. so that's pretty brisk nonetheless. despite those winds, it is warmer now, just about everywhere than at this time yesterday, except in san francisco, where it's three degrees cooler. so let's move along and take a view from sutro tower and a look at current temperature. reading 6363 degrees here in the city 70 in oakland hayward 74. mid 80s at san jose and redwood city and 61 at half moon bay. here's a view from mount tam. you see a little thin finger of fog trying to push its way through the golden gate there, but it's not amounting to much yet. 85 degrees right now at santa rosa, petaluma, 7981 at napa. and we have mid or even mid to upper 90s at fairfield, concord and livermore. and at the golden gate you see mainly blue sky. as

we check out the forecast headlines for tomorrow, triple digit heat will be with us in our inland areas over the weekend. the heat eases briefly, so we get about a two day break from the intense heat, but it's not going to cool down a lot, though it's still going to be quite warm. and then next week the excessive heat returns for possibly the entire week. so right now we have a heat advisory in effect until 11 p.m. tomorrow for virtually all of the bay area away from the bay and the coast. and under these conditions, of course, with this excessive heat, the risk of heat related illnesses increases. so the forecast animation for tonight looks like this. it's going to be a mainly clear night away from the coast and bay. a thin, shallow marine layer will develop and try to push across the bay again. it won't amount to much. there'll be some pockets of drizzle offshore, not likely to move on land areas. so we start the day tomorrow with bright sunny skies and increasing temperatures. overnight lows will be mainly in the upper 50s to low 60s, so pretty mild overnight. highs tomorrow 66 at half moon bay, 80 here in san francisco around the
