6:00 pm
and it's going to be even hotter tomorrow. i'll have the accuweather forecast always live. >> abc seven news starts right now. >> the fourth and final night of the republican national convention is getting underway. the night's theme, make america great once again, and it will feature a keynote speech by donald trump the first time he will speak publicly following the assassination attempt. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. melania trump will attend tonight's session of the rnc, publicly joining her husband for a major campaign event for the first time this election cycle. mr. trump is already at fiserv forum and is scheduled to speak in about an hour. you're looking live at the convention hall. tonight's other big names at the podium include wrestler hulk hogan, evangelist franklin graham, donald trump's son eric, and the ceo of the ufc, dana white. when donald trump does take the stage, he'll reportedly have a helmet and a firefighter jacket that belonged to corey.
6:01 pm
comparator he's the spectator who was killed during the shooting at saturday's rally. now, abc news will have extended live coverage of donald trump's speech, starting at 7 p.m. immediately after our broadcast here. abc seven news at six. >> president biden continues to recover from covid. this is video of him arriving in delaware last night. he returned from las vegas after he tested positive. today, his doctor says the president continues to have mild upper respiratory symptoms and is taking paxlovid. the biden campaign told supporters soon after the president was diagnosed with covid wednesday. the president's account on the social media platform x posted i'm sick. minutes later, the campaign followed up with a post saying elon musk and his rich buddies trying to buy this election. and if you agree, pitch in here. the post linked to a fundraising page. a campaign official says it was one of the campaign's best social media fundraising posts in more than a year, though they declined to share how much was

raised. the list of democrats who want president biden to reconsider his reelection campaign is growing. we learned today former president barack obama has privately expressed concerns to allies about president biden's candidacy. abc seven news reporter ryan curry has a look at the role. some california congress members are playing in the push to get president biden to step aside. >> reporter while the republican national convention wraps up concerns from the other party's candidate are growing. abc news reports former house speaker nancy pelosi told president biden democrats could lose congressional seats if he stays in the race. close pelosi ally adam schiff, who is running for senate, said i believe it is time for him to pass the torch. >> this is nothing like any election i've seen in my lifetime, and i think we have to go back way back to see anything even close to it at saint mary's college, professor steve wolpert has been closely monitoring this race. >> he thinks biden's chances of winning grow smaller each day, rather than holding on against
6:03 pm
all the odds and taking not only the presidency down, but also congress, because he's polling behind the democratic candidates and all the competitive senate and house seats. the concern amongst democrats is not just about the presidential race, but about a possible trickle down effect. professor wolpert says many of his young democratic students are not thrilled about a possible trump versus biden rematch, and that could affect their voter turnout, potentially affecting other races. >> at this point, we have to stick with the president or if the president decides to step aside, the only viable alternative is the vice president of united states to step up. >> luis alemany is a member of the young democrats of california. he says the party has to be united in a decision about who is on the ticket. >> if hitting each other publicly over the head with a mallet is going to work. as to somehow turn out voters, it's not right. voters want to see a stable party and a stable platform. >> president biden's campaign
6:04 pm
continues to say he won't drop out. >> our campaign is not working through any scenarios where president biden is not the top of the ticket. he is and will be the democratic nominee. but with down ballot democrats raising concerns, professor wolpert says if a change is coming, it needs to happen fast. >> it's such a disruptor to the campaign process and the organization and the fundraising. so the practical side of it is really complicated and no one knows exactly how that would work out. getting someone else's name on all the ballots. >> for example, we reached out to several bay area congressmen, including representatives ro khanna and josh harder, but they have yet to return our calls. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> and we're only about a month away from the democratic national convention. that will be august 19th to the 22nd in chicago. abc will host the next presidential debate that's set for september 10th. it's unclear if or when the vice presidential candidates will debate. election day is on november fifth. >> all right. so joining us now
6:05 pm
is abc seven news insider phil matier. phil, a lot can happen between now and the election. >> maybe a lot can happen between now and tomorrow. that's true. >> that's true. but obviously this past week has been something no one expected. no one could anything could anything bigger come from this? >> who knows? but we have. here is a story of a tale of two candidacies and tale of two parties, ones that's coming together and one that appears to be falling apart. let's take the donald trump and the republicans. they started off this election season a fractured party with a good number of republicans saying they didn't want a return of donald trump. they coalesced over donald trump in part, united against president joe biden. but they he brought it together. then we had the assassination attempt and now we're going to see tonight when he takes the stage, what is donald trump? is he changed? did the assassination attempt really have an effect on him? he's a master stage crafter of anything else. and so how long is it? what's he going to be delivering
6:06 pm
the message america's going to be watching tonight? meanwhile, all eyes are on delaware as well, where president joe biden is basically looks like that campaign is coming to an end. we have prominent democrats publicly and privately saying it's over when that happens. that means it's over, because then you have a candidate without a party. that's that's what it is. and the next step is a party without a candidate. so they've got to come up with somebody between now and their convention, which is in just next month. yeah, right. >> let's turn back to the republicans for a moment. as we've seen over the years, many, many times, donald trump for his supporters can really do no wrong. is that still the case? and is there anything that can stop the momentum that has been building this last week? >> i see i don't see anybody stopping the momentum on the republican side. the this race has, has, has split personality from the get go. you have people that are for their candidates, but a huge group of voters are voting against one side or the
6:07 pm
other. many americans feel that weren't happy with the choice of having to choose between biden and trump to begin with. and so some of it became anybody but anybody. but and the democrats are hoping that if they put another candidate in there, like possibly kamala harris, the vice president, that she will start out on the 45% margin, okay, and have to only go ten as opposed to starting out at 20. all righ. so you start on the 50 yard line and try to make it go there. least your odds are better right. but tonight everybody's going to be watching to see what donald trump emerges out on the stage and what's going on behind the stage with the democrats. and so the next couple of days, as you said, we've never seen anything like this before. but i've got to tell you, the way things are going, there's a lot more to come. >> okay. who would be your pick? you mentioned kamala harris. if biden were to step aside. >> i wouldn't have a pick. i would just say this, that she is the front runner because she is the vice president. he can't anoint her, but he can say, i endorse her or he can release
6:08 pm
his delegates and they make it. she would have the right to put it together the first time. if she can get it on the first vote, it's hers. if she can't, everybody's going to be in the mix. >> that's going to be a very interesting night tonight. next few days and weeks for sure. phil, thanks very much. >> well, happening today we are dealing with the start of warmer weather, but this is not a heat wave. yeah. >> abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian is here to explain. spencer. >> all right, dan. and i'm not a heat wave, but it's a wave of heat for two days. if it were three days or more, it would be a heat wave. and there is one coming our way. but right now we're looking at current temperatures across the bay area. you can see we have lots of low to mid and even mid to upper 90s still in our inland area. so it has been a hot day and it will be even hotter tomorrow. so our heat advisory remains in effect until 11:00 tomorrow night. that's for virtually all of the bay area away from the coast line and away from the bay shoreline. under these excessively hot conditions, of course, there's an increased risk of heat related illnesses. now, we also have an air quality advisory in effect through tomorrow because of the effect of wildfire smoke
6:09 pm
from the northern california wildfires. so air quality tomorrow will be only moderate across the board. but on saturday, we expect some modest improvement in the air quality. meanwhile, tomorrow is going to be an even hotter day than we had today. we will have numerous inland locations, reaching temperatures of 102 to about 105 or 106. tomorrow, upper 80s to around 90 near the bay shoreline. that's going to be hot, but there's a little break coming after that, before the actual heat wave. i'll tell you about that a little bit later. dan >> okay, spencer, thanks very much. do bart's new fair gates actually make a difference? we check on changes as bart prepares to upgrade another station. it is part of building a better bay area, and following the story of mail theft, the new steps being taken to stop

began around 215 this afternoon with this car that sky seven captured being towed from the eastern span. police say it was involved in a crash and rolled over. that's when things really got wild, the chp says. the driver then jumped off the bridge into the water. he was pulled from the bay by the coast guard, taken to the hospital with possible broken bones. three lanes of traffic were then closed for crash cleanup that lasted only 30 minutes. they reopened by 330. but you know what? the damage was done. as you know, it's a ripple effect. domino effect. traffic is still at a standstill around the bay bridge on on ramps in the city. this was how it looked at first and harrison streets not too long ago. and a live look now from our south beach tower. camera shows the major backup still happening on interstate

80. just a mess today. a driver was killed sadly this morning after a semi truck rear ended a toyota in fremont. the big rig then struck three more vehicles before going off the road and ended up jackknifed down an embankment. there it is. all this happened on southbound 680 near the mission boulevard exit during the morning commute, the driver of the toyota died. the driver of the big rig was not hurt. >> vallejo police are investigating a shooting that killed a 16 year old boy. the teen was found with at least one gunshot wound just after 1130 last night on caroline carolina street near bute street, about three blocks from city hall. he later died at the scene, along with a damaged car. there were dozens of shell casings on the road. police do not have any suspects in custody. the shooting marks the city's 12th homicide of the year. >> now to a story and an ongoing problem we've been following for years. we're talking about mail theft. members of a south bay community say they've been repeatedly hit by thieves and are desperate for solutions.
6:14 pm
that concern has led to the proposal of a new bill. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes is live in our san jose bureau with the story tonight, zach. >> yeah, dan. mail theft is a problem not just in the south bay, not just in the bay area, but the entire state and the residents i got to talk to today say that it's been costly for them and even dangerous. but right now, with that new legislation, they are feeling more hopeful. take a look at these clips from neighbors in this south san jose condo complex. neighbors say that the cluster mailbox was opened wide, not by one of the homeowners or a postal worker, but by thieves. >> actually, right here, opening it with a key. and you can tell because he's opening this one, this specific slot here, which is the one that uses the master key. you can see that he opens that one first and then he opens the whole unit. >> law enforcement says that thieves oftentimes get those master keys from postal workers who have been robbed. last year in california, 61% of statewide postal worker robberies happened in the bay area.
6:15 pm
>> theft is a serious crime that frequently results in identity theft, check fraud and other financial crimes. >> john young said he's had financial documents stolen. his neighbors have also experienced loss of medication, or hundreds of dollars worth of gift cards sent to family members, law enforcement says cluster mailboxes are a target for thieves who often choose them instead of a series of individual boxes. young says the neighbors have asked the usps for individual mailboxes on their garages that they'd be willing to pay for, but they're not even willing to entertain it. so they went to their local city council member, domingo candelas, and eventually got the attention of congressman jimmy panetta. last month, panetta helped introduce a bipartisan bill called the mail theft act. it aims to develop cross coordination to combat mail theft, make sure that federal government and the us attorney's and the doj and the usps actually all coordinate at the federal level, but also with the local level as well. on top of that, panetta and the neighbors have pointed to electronic locking mechanisms on cluster
6:16 pm
mailboxes. a more secure option usps said it's already using on blue collection boxes. panetta said he's also been part of legislation to appropriate funds to the usps. for that. panetta has public support from the santa clara county sheriff's office and san jose police department. the neighbors say they finally have hope. >> i mean, there was no pathway through the forest before, and now there is. so that's something that's that's a huge something. >> and those neighbors tell me that the usps did change the locks on that cluster mailbox, but the problem is still happening. it happened just as recent as this past weekend. we reached out to the usps about the neighbors claims and for reaction to panetta's bill, a postal inspector got back to me and said, they're not ready to make a comment yet. by the way, panetta's bill is under the oversight committee right now and is waiting on a hearing right now in the san jose bureau. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> all right, zach, thank you. the new oakland to alameda water shuttle could resume service tomorrow after a shutdown on the same day it launched the free shuttle made its debut yesterday morning but wasn't able to
6:17 pm
complete all its scheduled runs because of a mechanical issue. it remained closed today, a spokesperson from the city of alameda tells us the vessel has been repaired and test runs with no passengers could begin tonight. the shuttle runs between oakland's jack london square and alameda landing. bart is installing the new. the next batch of its new fare gates. they're designed to deter fare evasion. abc7 news reporter luz pena went to san francisco's civic center station, where bart is hoping the new gates will make people pay their share of the fare and build a better bay area. hi, lose? >> yes. am i the first station where bart tested these new gates was in west oakland over six months ago. now they're ready to expand in san francisco. san francisco civic center bart station is the current one on their list. if you're a frequent bart rider, it doesn't take long to witness people jumping or uh- people trying to squeeze his body through the turnstiles or i've seen somebody wait for somebody to get in and then piggyback off that entrance, bart says.
6:18 pm
pre-pandemic numbers project. it was losing tens of millions of dollars because people were finding ways to avoid pain. >> it also bothers me that it's being done. you know, directly in front of bart employees. >> we saw several people jumping over gates. one stopped by a bart police officer right after making it to the other side. we tried speaking to them to understand their point of view. you said he doesn't want to speak. just two weeks ago, a bart rider, corazon dandan, was killed when a man pushed her into an oncoming train at the powell station. today, bart confirmed the suspect had no proof he paid his fare. >> the reality is that people who fare evade not every fare evader commits a crime, but it is not uncommon for us to see that people who have unwanted behavior on bart have fare evaded to get in. >> our abc7 news data team looked into monthly fare evasion citations and found that variations are trending up. bart says they're noticing a decline at the west oakland station, where new gates were installed
6:19 pm
december of last year. >> the number of entries and exits at west oakland is up 120,000 from the same period of the first six months of 2022. so what that's telling us is more people are, in fact, tagging in with their clipper card at west oakland than they were before the new gates went in. >> bart's plan is to replicate these gates throughout the system. this week, they're beginning to install the second batch of new gates, this one at the san francisco civic center station. >> this is a priority project for bart. we're going to replace more than 700 fare gates across the system at all 50 of our stations. >> bart acknowledges these gates are just one aspect. more police presence is another. we noticed a person jump over the gate, see the officer, and go back inside to buy a ticket. >> gates is one thing, but you know safety and security is needs to be beyond the gate. >> and bart is projecting to have all the new gates installed by the end of 2025. that's technically about three bart

stations a month. luz pena, abc seven news all right. >> thanks very much. all right, let's turn our attention to the return of the heat. >> yes. and how long it may stay. stay around. spencer. >> well, it's a brief visit this time around, but then after the weekend, we have a longer visit of more heat coming our way. here's what's happening in the atmosphere that's giving us our current weather pattern. we've got high pressure to our east, out over the four corners area, and it's clockwise circulation is contributing to the onshore flow along with the counterclockwise counterclockwise circulation around low pressure to our northwest. that's giving us a very tight pressure gradient, which results in a rather rather vigorous onshore flow. it has provided some cooling at the coastline, but not in our inland areas, because the heat is pretty intense there. right now we're looking at rather strong wind speeds in most locations near the coast, 35 mile per hour winds right here in san francisco. and the 24 hour temperature change shows it's warmer just about everywhere right now than at this time last night. so let's move along. take

6:22 pm
our forecast headline forecast animation overnight. we'll see a little shallow marine layer developing along the coast, pushing out locally over the bay. it won't have much of a cooling influence anywhere, and there'll be pockets of drizzle and showers offshore, but they will not move over land areas, so we'll start the day tomorrow morning with mainly sunny skies, but overnight, mainly clear skies except near the coast. overnight lows on the mild side, mainly upper 50s to low 60s. and then tomorrow the heat increases at the coast. look for highs in the mid 60s. 80 here in san francisco, which is rather unusual around the bay shoreline. we'll see. we'll see some mid to upper 80s, maybe even around 90 91in places like redwood city. those are the usual hot spots near the bay, shoreline and inland areas. we'll have numerous highs, ranging from 102 to about 104. concord 105 at santa rosa. it's going to be really hot in on tomorrow. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast notice. saturday and sunday we get a little bit of a break, breezy and slightly less hot on saturday with inland highs only in the mid 90s at the most. mid
6:23 pm
70s around the bay shoreline and cooler still on sunday with only low 90s inland. but monday we bounce back up to about 102 inland, 104 in the hottest spots on tuesday, and for virtually all of next week. we're looking at triple digits in our inland areas and mid 80s to about 90 or even higher around the bay shoreline, so it's going to be a long, hot week next week. looks like it. thanks slosser. >> the new way to watch tv is the most popular way to watch and streaming. just set a discover the ozempic® tri-zone. ♪ ♪ i got the power of 3. i lowered my a1c, cv risk, and lost some weight. in studies, the majority of people reached an a1c under 7 and maintained it. i'm under 7. ozempic® lowers the risk of major cardiovascular events
