martha raddatz, and chief washington correspondent jonathan karl. jonathan, i want to start with you and watching the prime time special with you and the team there. i was struck by something that linsey davis said from grace to grievance. you spoke with trump on the phone earlier this week. he told you he rewrote his speech. he threw out the old one after the assassination attempt. what happened? >> well look he did write a new speech. it seems there were a couple of lines there early on. >> he said, i'm not running to be the president of half of america. i'm running to be a president of all of america. that is not the kind of line that you would normally have heard from donald trump. but then he went and it seemed like he gave both speeches. the unifying speech, a bit in the beginning. and then the speech that was as divisive as trump has ever been. and he he seemed to speak to the half of america giving a speech that was twice as long. it was rambling. and i think it's got democrats feeling who were depressed just a little while ago, feeling a little bit

started to change. >> byron and rachel, i'll follow up. do you do you think this speech will play well with independents around the country? it seemed listening to it from new york, that in the beginning he was talking to the nation, and by the end he was talking to the room. >> yeah, it depends on what part of the speech those independents and moderates watch. if they watch the first half of the speech, i think that, yes, that will be appealing. these call for unity to come together, rally behind the former president to put everyone's differences aside, move forward as one nation. but as you get further into the speech, the former president really resorted back to what he has said on the campaign trail. i mean, he made false claims about the 2020 election. at one point, he called former speaker of the house nancy pelosi crazy. he used an anti-asian word to describe the covid pandemic. he blasted the justice department. you had one point of the speech where he went off talking about hannibal lecter. i mean, this was really hard to follow at certain points, even for the person that was operating the teleprompter. i was watching them in the back of the room,

trying to figure out where the former president was going with these remarks. so, yes, the first couple of minutes of this speech, probably the unifying message that the former president intended to deliver and even though former president donald trump said he was not going to mention joe biden's name, byron, he just could not simply resist himself. he ended up saying it. >> martha, weigh in here. i'm mindful that you, my friend, you've traveled this country and this globe talking to more service members, more regular americans. any journalist i know. how do you think this speech will play across the country? >> well, i think all week we've heard this message of unity that president trump is going to come out and talk about unifying people on the floor here. that's what they wanted to hear. i mean, we've talked to people here. i've talked to people in other places that they will really looking forward to that message. so i'm not sure that that is really going to resonate. byron, this week he had an opportunity to show his

like i said, i think democrats are feeling buoyed as our old colleague nate silver put it, watching this speech, it looks like both parties are trying to throw the election. democrats are looking at this and saying, we really can win. the question is, can we win with joe biden? and i think that that effort is going to be intensifying. but joe biden might have watched this speech tonight and thought, you know what? why would i get out of this race? >> yeah. >> john, martha, rachel, my friends and colleagues, thank you for your great work this week. get a quick nap. i know you're traveling tomorrow. safe travels home and you get to do this again next month from chicago. all right. >> thank you byron. >> be there. >> grateful to you. we'll be right back. to help protect from hiv, i prep without pills with apretude. >> a prescription medicine used to reduce the risk of hiv. without daily prep pills with one shot every other month, just six times a year in studies, apretude was proven superior to
