flights. but let's start with the check of our forecast. >> yeah, we're warming up pretty quickly today. heat advisory still continue. today is the hottest day of the week. temperatures much warmer than yesterday. so areas in orange. it's a heat advisory. and that just means listen to your body. take it easy out there today. drink plenty of water. find ways to stay cool because temperatures about 10 to 20 degrees above average right now. looking at current temperatures, it's pretty pleasant around the bay shoreline. good morning hayward at 5957 in palo alto, 58 in santa clara. widen out the picture and we do have some warmer air inland. 67 in brentwood, 70 right now in cloverdale. so we'll highlight inland areas first. this is the place that's going to get hot pretty quickly today above 100 this afternoon. i think our hottest cities inland probably hit 103 104 right around 4 p.m, so expect to have some hot weather lasting the next about 6 to 8 hours hitting the bay shoreline. it is warm if not hot. lots of sunshine. we have limited cloud cover this morning. we'll get into the upper 80s for daytime highs. i think the beaches will be

popular today for good reason. immune to the heat. lots of sunshine this afternoon. wear that sunscreen. the uv index is high. temperatures will top out in the mid 60s. let's check in with amanda and see those drive times this morning. >> hi joe, a few minor mass transit issues to get to here at 602. this is impacting riders who rely on both ace and bart, specifically ace train one is laid due to train traffic up to 20 minute delay. you can see it there and then an equipment problem on a track is setting people back about 20 minutes on the antioch line in the antioch direction, and then we want to take a live look at our san mateo bridge. 11 minutes to get from the toll plaza into foster city. our overall map showing it's pretty quiet friday light as they like to call it, minus that typical slowdown through the altamont pass. but there is an issue causing some minor delays and a minor backup. this is a solo crash in the center divide at southbound 101. after bayshore boulevard, things slowly recovering at 47mph. kumasi. >> thanks, amanda. breaking overnight, a crippling cyber security outage brings down

computer networks from businesses, governments and airports. crowdstrike is a company impacted. it services, large corporations and government clients in a statement posted overnight, the ceo says the company is actively working with customers. the defect was found in a single content update for windows hosts. it's not a security incident or a cyber attack, but one of the biggest impacts has been flights. dozens of them have been canceled or delayed. many passengers are at the airport just waiting around to figure out what to do next. abc seven news reporter lena howland joining us live at sfo with what it's looking like now, lena. >> come on, steve, from our perspective here at the delta counter right behind me, we are still not seeing much improvement at all. if you take a look, more people have been showing up and waiting in line just to get rebooked on a different line, on a different flight. according to flightawar, sfo is already experiencing more than 70 cancellations so far this morning. take a look at

what things looked like here just before 1:00 in the morning. flight information display screens were down. frustrated passengers were seen waiting around, unable to even check a bag. as of about 5 a.m, more than 1000 flights across the country had been canceled, with delta and american the most impacted. we talked to one passenger here who was supposed to be leaving for a trip to belize with a layover in houston when he wasn't even able to check a bag. >> we're pretty much just stuck here until we figure out what's next. i don't know how long it's going to be. it's been at least for a couple hours. we've been waiting though, so we'll see what's next. i don't know, but yeah, we're stuck for a while. >> american airlines said they are back up and running as normal. other airlines have not been so lucky. united said they are only resuming some flights and expect more disruptions throughout the day. now, both delta and united have said that

they are working on issuing travel waivers so that passengers can get rebooked on different flights. of course, today is a very important day to check your flight status before heading to any airport. live at sfo. lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you lena. air india passengers currently stranded in siberia are expected to finally make it to san francisco today. the airline said it is sending a relief flight to pick them up after their flight from new delhi made an emergency landing in russia. the cockpit crew found a technical issue in the boeing triple seven's cargo hold two hours into the flight yesterday. air india says it worked with russia officials so the passengers could stay at hotels overnight. this was not related to the cybersecurity issue we just talked about with lena. >> now to your voice, your vote. former president donald trump has formally accepted the republican nomination for president. he gave his first live speech since the assassination attempt on his life, abc news reporter perry russom tells us the other hot

focusing on lowering the cost of energy by drilling, saying he will end the war in ukraine and closing the border. the republican platform promises to launch the largest deportation operation in the history of our country. >> with the republican nomination now solidified, the democratic nomination may be in question. according to two people familiar with the conversations. former house speaker nancy pelosi has privately told some house democrats she believes president biden is more receptive to hearing calls to step aside, and those conversations could push him to make a decision soon. a top white house communications official calls the report of biden planning to withdraw fan fiction. with the democrats in disarray, the republican party uniting behind trump, we will press forward and together we will win, win, win. all eyes now go from milwaukee to delaware, where president biden is recovering from covid. the democratic national convention is one month away in chicago. perry russom, abc news, milwaukee.

>> san francisco mayor london breed says the city is planning to start a very aggressive sweep of homeless encampments next month. the mayor made that comment at a debate yesterday hosted by the san francisco firefighters union. our media partners at the san francisco standard were there, and they say breed applauded the supreme court's decision in june that allows cities to enforce rules restricting unhoused people from sleeping outside. breed says the city may start issuing criminal penalties for violations. an illegal encampment along the bay bridge won't be forced out quite yet. the 8 to 10 homeless people who have lived there on the coast for months, we're told they have to leave by today. oakland confirms they now have until tuesday to clear the premises, which is critical for some trying to figure out where to go. >> it's been difficult in every, every single city i've gone to, there's they don't have the resources clearing out the encampments is one thing, but providing housing for those people is completely different.

>> and that senior manager at 201 alameda says the county is out of shelter beds for these people who must clear their encampment. board of supervisors president nate miley says the county is working on creating sanctioned encampments. >> developing news yemen's houthi rebels are claiming responsibility for a drone strike that hit tel aviv, killing one person and injuring ten others. it happened near the us embassy, a houthi spokesperson posted online saying the strike hit one of the group's targets and was in retaliation for the israel-hamas war. the houthis claim their newest drones can bypass israel's aerial defense systems. israel denies that claim, saying the strike was not intercepted, was not intercepted due to human error. >> time now approaching 610 will take you into our hills, because i want to show you some of the warm air we have in place this morning. it's 82 at hawkeye. a lot of our north bay mountains seeing temperatures in the 70s and 80s. the oakland hills right now, quite mild at 71. even the east foothills of san jose, a

current temperature of 73 degrees. so this is the launching pad to get us into a hot afternoon later on today. look at highs versus average. the difference is pretty stark about 10 to 20 degrees above average for this time of the year. livermore, concord, santa rosa above 100 degrees. even around the bay shoreline, we have oakland. we have san jose in the 80s and in the 90s. so a heat advisory is in effect for good reason. high pressure is getting closer to us today. that's why we have the warmer weather. but by tomorrow it loses its grip on us and cooler air will rush in here for the weekend. but today we do want to take a little bit easy out there as we see those temperatures take off pretty quickly. this morning. by 1 p.m, we do expect 90s. if not our first 100 degree reading 80s and 90s around the bay. shoreline gets even hotter here as we head deeper into the day, so highs are certainly going to be warm for july 1st zero four. in concord, 101 in santa rosa, a warm 92 in san jose with a heat advisory in effect, warm in the east bay at 8276. in the city, reggie will

convicted the wall street journal reporter a little over an hour ago on espionage charges. russia claims the 32 year old acted on cia instructions to collect secret defense and military information. gershkovich the wall street journal and the united states deny those claims. us officials and its employer have denounced this trial as a sham. attorneys for hunter biden are trying to dismiss both federal criminal cases against him. they cite a federal judge's decision earlier this week to dismiss the classified documents case against donald trump. that judge ruled special counsel jack smith's appointment in trump's case was unconstitutional. hunter biden's lawyers say the special counsel appointments in his cases are invalid for the same reason he was found guilty last month on three firearm related felonies. and in la in january, biden pleaded not guilty to tax related felonies.

another big retailer making huge changes at its union square location in san francisco, saks fifth avenue now says it will operate by appointment only. the retailer claims this will improve the shopper experience, according to the chronicle, the major changes begin august 28th. saks fifth avenue also announced a round of layoffs. it's not clear how many employees are affected, and the store did not say why it's making these cuts or why it's moving to appointment only. we continue to follow the a's planned relocation to las vegas. >> the team is planning to leave $30 million in public money on the table, after its new stadium in las vegas is built. a's executive sandy dean told vegas officials the club expects to spend 350 million of the $380 million allocated for the ballpark. the total cost of the stadium is $1.5 billion. the rest of that money is coming from private equity. the a's hoped to start playing in vegas in the 2028 season.

probably have a lot of ideas about garlic. true. get a mascot going on there. you know, get some fun. yeah. we can make it work this morning. we'll take you to our sutro tower camera. we do have a little bit of fog out there. what a pretty picture this is. you can see just the very, very top of the golden gate bridge blinking out there. we do have limited fog just along the coastline, and it will evaporate as you head deeper into the day. so what that means if you're thinking of going to our beaches today, the coast, to get away from some of that inland heat, it will be a nice afternoon. we'll get bright conditions, see temperatures seventys 60s depending on which beach you go to. the ocean water temperature currently at 60 degrees. so looking at highs today in our microclimates, the heat advisory is with us for another day. it's a hot one in the south bay, 91 in santa clara, 92 in san jose will go to 100 in morgan hill, 90 in milpitas, now along the peninsula. while those temperatures in the 80s and 90s close to the bay shoreline cooler along the coast, but still 90 in los altos, 80 for the high in san mateo across the

city today, a wide range along the ocean. we'll have temperatures in the upper 60s downtown. we're more in the mid 70s and then south san francisco, probably close to 80 degrees later on. this afternoon in the north bay. it is hot as that heat advisory continues a 96 in napa, but 100 in san rafael will go 101 in santa rosa, 100 in vallejo. but our beaches are nice. sausalito looking pretty comfortable today along the water at 76 degrees in the east bay, we'll hit about 82 in oakland, 88 in fremont, 90 in castro valley and then inland. we have a moderate to a major heat risk today because those temperatures about 20 degrees above average with everybody at or above 100 degrees overnight tonight we will see limited fog developing along the coast, temperatures away from the coast. we stay pretty mild in the 60s. overnight tonight. but to kick off the weekend, cooler weather moves in here. so we're getting closer to average tomorrow. and that cooling does continue on sunday as well. but then next week we'll probably see another round of heat advisories being issued as warmer weather moves in. accuweather seven day forecast

paid to respond to protests over the israel-hamas war earlier this year. the la times reports the uc system spent more than $29 million. about 90% of that spent on law enforcement, private security and other safety measures. pro-palestinian demonstrators set up tent encampments that led to violence on some campuses, leading to clashes with police and damage to university property. the uc board of regents is banning employees from posting political statements on the homepages of university websites. the board fears comments like that could be interpreted as the university system's official view on an issue. political statements and personal opinions will be allowed on secondary pages. personal university web pages and social media accounts. however, they have to include a disclaimer saying they do not represent uc's official views. this morning, the new oakland to alameda water shuttle will resume service after it was

forced to stop service the same day it launched. we were there when free that free shuttle service made its debut wednesday morning, but it wasn't able to complete all of its scheduled runs because of a mechanical issue. a spokesperson from the city of alameda tells us the vessel has been repaired and now the test runs are done. the shuttle runs between oakland's jack london square and alameda landing. there is a hunt for a giant rooster happening right now in campbell. the owner of california home and garden sent us this photo of a large metal rooster that was taken from the front of its store. now it's about six feet tall. employees have been wheeling it out for display at the winchester boulevard business for at least five years now. the owner says thieves rolled it down the sidewalk and loaded it onto a vehicle. the rooster is valued at roughly $5,000. actor and comedian bob newhart has died. newhart was known for his roles in the classic tv sitcoms the bob newhart show and newhart. he

also won three grammys for his live album the button-down mind of bob newhart. in 1961. he was in other popular movies more recently, like elf and legally blond two. newhart is survived by his four children, ten grandchildren. he was 94. the clock tower in san francisco's ghirardelli square will get its first new roof in more than a century. during a regular inspection, officials found a leak in the tower. according to the chronicle, the issue started during heavy rain in 2022, but the permitting process for long term fix took some time. more than 1300 tiles will be removed and inspected, then either replaced or repaired. the clock tower is expected to be covered with scaffolding until next summer. who is the greatest athlete of the 21st century? espn just released its list of the top 100 professional athletes since 2000. olympic swimmer michael phelps tops the list. san mateo native and seven time super bowl champ tom brady, ranked fifth. warriors superstar

minutes. reggie >> thank you so much, amanda. a global internet outage is disrupting everything from business, operations, government services and flights. the company responsible is a cybersecurity company, and in the last half hour, the company ceo said it could be hours or longer before every company gets all of their systems back up and running. one of the biggest impacts we're seeing is from airports. abc seven news reporter lena howland has been in sfo all morning long. lena, we know there are cancellations, there are long lines and people who are stranded. >> reggie that's right. we are over right now here at the united counter and just take a look at this insanely long line. at first we thought we couldn't even see the ticket counter because of how long this line was. and actually, this ticket counter had been closed up until a few minutes ago. they just reopened this and passengers were cheering the moment. this actually reopened. but now they're going to have to get through this massive line to

look, disappointed. obviously it's a long way from australia to the us to start with, which sucks. >> american airlines said they are back up and running as normal. other airlines have not been so lucky. united said they are only resuming some flights and expect more disruptions throughout the day. in a new statement from delta, the airline company said delta has resumed some flight departures after a vendor technology issue impacted several airlines and businesses around the world. that issue necessitated a pause in delta's global flight schedule this morning. while it was addressed, both delta and united have said that they are issuing travel waivers to passengers in order to get rebooked on different flights. of course, this is a day that you are definitely going to want to check your flight status before heading to the airport today. live at sfo lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you lena. well, perhaps the most concerning of all is the impact to emergency services. the city of oakland

says it's aware of the cybersecurity outage affecting jurisdictions worldwide. it issued a statement saying the impacts in oakland have caused many computers to become inaccessible and are being evaluated and responded to. now, oakland's 911 call center is still active. the lines are open. they can receive emergency calls from the community. the city says people can continue to report emergencies by dialing 911. abc news reporter aaron katersky has more on how emergency response systems across the country have been impacted. >> like many industries, the nation's police and fire services, especially in the big cities, have gone high tech. they are reliant on systems they do not control. and this morning they're returning to old school low tech methods, dispatching, using radios and the telephone. that's not going to be crippling, but it could slow things down in a way the public isn't used to. computers at the justice department were told are affected, and so far there's no indication, though it's affecting law enforcement activities in the field. here in

new york, the mayor's office says the city is assessing the impact emergency operations, including 9-1-1, are not affected. but it is, guys, a reminder of how dependent we all are on interconnected systems that are potentially vulnerable. >> some bay area residents are already feeling the impact. we stopped by a starbucks in downtown san francisco, where workers say they faced long lines because of the outage. this is a location at drum and california streets. this store is a pickup only location where customers order through the mobile app, but the app was down when we were there about an hour ago, so that means workers also had to change their operations last minute. abc seven news spoke with a contractor who says he was supposed to work at the federal reserve bank across the street, but was told not to go into work today because of the outage. >> now it's your voice, your vote. president joe biden reportedly becoming more open to the idea of dropping out of the race. this comes as another high profile democrat urges biden to

conducted this poll. it found about 6 in 10 democrats believe kamala harris would do well in the top spot, 2 in 10, 2 in 10 do not believe she would. and then another 2 in 10 say they don't know enough to say. harris has remained loyal to president biden after his poor debate performance. we are only about a month away from the democratic national convention. it will be august 19th through the 22nd in chicago. abc will be hosting the next presidential debate that's set for september 10th. it's not clear if or when the vice presidential candidates will be debating. and then, of course, election day is november 5th. >> now to local politics. all week we've been talking to the candidates running for san francisco mayor. supervisor asha sapphire joined us in studio to explain why his approach to combating crime is investing more in community policing. >> we're down officers right no, but we're not down the willpower. and what i put forward this past january was to

francisco. recently released research finds that increased enforcement of disorderly conduct like panhandling and loitering, can lower crime by 26. yet criminologists warn against the long term effects of overpolicing. >> when they don't trust the police, they don't call 911 to report crimes. they might take matters into their own hands and initiate retaliatory violence. they might not cooperate with ongoing investigations. when people don't trust the police, the work of the police becomes that much more challenging. >> studies have shown that other measures, like improving street lighting and cleaning up litter and graffiti, can also lower crime and improve the public's sense of safety. the most recent fbi report says property crime and violent crime are down 15% in the us this year. >> now, it's an ongoing problem we've been following for years. mail theft. members of one south bay community say they've been repeatedly hit by thieves. now, help may be on the way from the federal level. neighbors at a condo complex in south san jose captured surveillance video of

their mailboxes being opened by thieves. they went to their local city council member, domingo candelas, and got the attention of congressman jimmy panetta. panetta helped introduce a bipartisan bill called the mail theft act. it aims to develop cross coordination to combat mail theft, make sure that federal government and the us attorney's and the doj and the usps actually all coordinate at the federal level, but also at the with the local level. law enforcement say that mail thieves often get mailbox master keys by robbing postal workers. last year in california, 61% of statewide postal worker robberies happened here in the bay area. still to come. getting ready for the big one. the drill to make sure first responders are prepared if there's a big earthquake. >> we're taking a look live right now at the big board at the new york stock exchange. you can see we're down about 130 points right now. another update on the markets next. >> and how about getting a

between the coast and our inland communities. we'll go into the mid 70s downtown in the city. warmer as you hop over into oakland at 82. and this is downright hot inland. we're above 100 degrees this afternoon with that heat advisory in effect, here's live doppler seven along with satellite. you can blame or thank this high pressure depending on if you hate or like the warm weather. that is what is bringing us the heat up today. tomorrow though, it moves away from us and that allows cooler air to finally filter in for the weekend. today's forecast inland. here we go. we're finding temperatures above 100 degrees today around the bay shoreline. we'll head into the 80s for daytime highs and along the coast. i really think our beach is going to be very popular today. as you see, sunshine and temperatures much cooler in the 60s and 70. so a high of 65 in half moon bay, but 92 in san jose, 103 in antioch, in fairfield, 101 in santa rosa. it's just downright hot away from the coast in the north bay. 96 in napa, we'll go to about 84. in san mateo, a high of 86. in richmond today, the heat risk
