now 109 days away, and the first early votes will be cast in just eight weeks time. new details, meantime, have emerged about the suspected shooter at former president trump's rally last weekend. multiple law enforcement sources confirmed to abc news suspicions about the suspect, thomas matthew crooks, were first raised by other people in the crowd at the rally when they spotted crooks with a rangefinder and a duffel bag. a member of a local swat team first spotted crooks about one hour before the shooting, when he walked by a window. sources also say crooks researched other mass shooters leading up to the attack, and individuals and individual using crooks name signed up online to attend the trump rally a week before the shooting, using an encrypted email address and a phone number. >> we have developing news now on that global tech outage wreaking havoc across the u.s. cybersecurity firm crowdstrike reported a glitch in a software update took down institutions at

every level airports, hospitals, banks, offices, media as we know and 9-1-1 as disruptions were being felt worldwide. >> the ceo of crowdstrike, george kurtz, tweeted, this is not a security incident or cyber attack. the issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed. he later said. crowdstrike will be transparent as to what went wrong and what's being done to prevent it from happening again. >> one of the biggest impacts was felt at airports. many just brought to a standstill thousands of flights canceled and delayed. >> abc seven news reporter tim johns is live from sfo, with more on the impact on air travel. and tim, it was significant. >> reporter yeah. dan ama, it's been quite the day here at sfo. i can tell you guys that. and as you can see behind me here, this line is actually pretty normal for what a normal travel day would look like here at the airport. but i can tell you earlier today it was out the door pretty much throughout the whole terminal, just hundreds upon hundreds of people here

just trying to figure out a way to get out of the bay area. literally thousands of passengers are stranded at sfo as airlines recover from a worldwide i.t. outage. that's crippling air travel across the globe. as of 1 p.m. friday, around 2500 flights have been canceled and 8400 delayed around the u.s, according to data from cirium. with lines almost out the door at sfo, we stopped to talk to several travelers. amy rosenthal told us she had just flown in from tokyo on her way back home to florida. she says she was completely unaware of the travel meltdown until after she landed in the bay area. >> you can't get through to anybody on the phone with the apps not working, nothing. so we have like, no clue what's going on. >> others, like mia lewis, were actually originally scheduled to leave last night, but had their flights canceled. >> we were literally on the plane getting ready to leave, and they pretty much said they're having a system issue with everybody needs to get off the plane. >> lewis says she's trying to get back home to baltimore to attend her grandmother's funeral. she told me since thursday night, her flight had been canceled at least three

times. she got to the airport seven hours early friday to try and ensure she gets on a flight. >> just making sure if they do, like, push the time back that i'm here for whatever happens. but hopefully it doesn't go delayed again. >> it's a similar story for alex rand, who says he spent the night sleeping in the terminal. >> this is my 14th hour in sfo right now. >> oh, so you haven't left? >> oh, i haven't left. i'm on one hour of sleep and a cup of coffees. >> well, airlines are slowly recovering from outage problems. experts say getting things back to normal could take time. >> then they got to sort through getting crews back to the right spot. they got to figure out where all their airplanes are, get those to the right places. it's just kind of untangling a complicated web. >> sean cuddihy, aviation reporter for travel website the points guy, says if you're flying out, he recommends getting to the airport early, checking in ahead of time and remembering to be patient. >> it's a busy day for the gate agents. the ticket agents yelling at them is not going to get you to your destination any faster. >> now, just to give you guys an

idea of how widespread this outage was, only 47% of every flight scheduled to take off in the us today actually left on time. i'm live in sfo. tim johns, abc seven news. >> all right, tim, thank you so much. and the outage didn't cause as many problems at the other two bay area airports as san jose. mineta international airport. only one flight was canceled this morning. most of the issues were flight delays, and most of those were less than an hour. in oakland, there were only a handful of delays and cancellations two incoming flights on spirit and one on delta airlines were canceled. only three departing flights were affected by delays. an aviation expert says these two experts aren't hubs for major airlines, and that helped them avoid big disruptions. >> now, a number of cities across the bay area were highly affected by the crowdstrike outage, but san francisco actually fared better. >> abc seven news reporter luz pena spoke to the city's executive director of technology about why the city wasn't highly impacted. hi, luis. >> that's right. despite san

francisco not facing the brunt of this outage, city departments are taking notes and said many lessons will come out of today as the world woke up to a global crowdstrike outage, san francisco mostly dodged a bullet. it's a lesson learned from us that things happen unexpectedly. early friday, the city's executive director for the department of technology began to deploy his team throughout the city, making sure all city operations were live. >> emergency management, public safety, public health and other critical city operations remain unaffected. >> we checked with multiple city agencies. as sfmta said, the city's transportation was not impacted earlier this year. we reported on how the mta's train system operates on floppy disks that prevented any setbacks. the city's fire department released a statement saying they, too, were not impacted. however, they did see a spike of 20 calls for false fire alarms between 234

and 2:50 a.m. the outage did impact many companies throughout the city. >> a lot of it infrastructure has crashed to understand the scope of work it departments are facing, we spoke to john hammond, former department of defense cyber operator and principal security researcher at huntress. all these computers that are now stuck in that blue screen and frowny face, well, that's something that they'll need to really manually go fix, it's not something we can sort of automate or push out a solution in mass. a lot of the engineers or technicians will probably spend today in their weekend, going through and trying to hand jam on the keyboard. >> after all, with a constant threat of earthquakes hitting this region, the city's tech department viewed today as an opportunity to grow. >> we've been investing for many years now. we're preparing for an earthquake. we're doing a lot from our covid response. and now, more than ever, technology is so critical to city operations. we're paying a lot

of attention and working very closely with all the department it teams to make sure that they are prepared to continue operations even when technology is not available to us. >> and it's important to highlight that this was not a security incident or a cyber attack, but an i.t. issue. and we're still seeing the consequences of it. >> what an issue it was huge. yeah. >> goodness, we were impacted. yes >> big problems are hard to escape it. all right. thank you lewis. >> well, a popular east bay restaurant is feeling the effects of the widespread outage because of all of the problems. comi, the famed two michelin starred restaurant in oakland, has shut down bar kitchen service through saturday night. a three of the restaurant's chefs are stuck out of town because of the grounded airline flights, and will not be back in time for dinner service. the restaurant's main kitchen remains open for the full tasting menu. comey is one of the hottest tickets in the east bay. reservations are released a month in advance and are usually booked up instantly. of course, we'll continue to follow every development with this

crowdstrike software outage here on air and online. visit abc7 news dot com or download the abc seven bay area app and enable the push alerts. >> let's turn now to our weather and take a live look outside at the east bay hills. some inland areas are under a heat advisory today. you can definitely feel the shift. so for the latest conditions, let's get to abc seven's spencer christian. >> okay, ama, that inland heat we've experienced all afternoon this holding on tightly right now. here's a look at current temperature readings. it's 104 right now at santa rosa and saint helena, 103 at fairfield and brentwood, 101 at concord. 100 degrees at livermore, danville and ukiah, and even locations that haven't hit triple digits are in the upper 90s. now, as i'm pointed out, this heat advisory remains in effect for all of the bay area except locations right around the bay shoreline and the coast until 11:00 tonight. at that point, we expect this heat advisory to be lifted, but until then, the heat is excessive, and under these conditions, there's an increased risk of heat related illnesses. now, tomorrow we'll see some pretty good

relief inland. highs tomorrow will reach only into the low to mid 90s. we're talking about an 8 to 10 degree drop in many locations from today's highs. even cooler weather is expected on sunday, but early next week, well, monday we'll see triple digits developing again and this wave of heat next week may actually be a heat wave lasting several days. i have all the details on that a little bit later. uh- ama. >> all right. thank you spencer. we'll check back and p-g-and-e's warning customers of a possible psps or what they call a public safety power shut off this weekend. that's because of high winds and dry conditions. officials say the potential shut off could affect 16,000 customers in six counties, including two in the. here in the bay area, fewer than 500 customers in portions of alameda and contra costa counties have been notified. >> more to come here. a victory today for those fighting to keep a south bay medical center open. how the hospital is changing course to meet their demands, and a summer of science for some bay area students turns into one. >> they won't soon forget to

today, the hospital announced it will keep its trauma center heart attack and stroke centers open, but there are some changes. the trauma centers capacities will be downgraded. the acute heart attack program will be revamped, but still there will be a cardiologist available 24 hours a day. hca healthcare, which owns the hospital, says the stroke center will still address the needs of roughly 97% of patients. >> 200 backpacks filled with school supplies were put together for critically ill children. today, anthem blue cross hosted the packing party in palo alto this morning. dozens of employees filled the backpacks with notepads, scissors, glue sticks, pens, crayons and hand sanitizer. the supplies go not only to ronald mcdonald house children, but

days. the i guess disappointing news is that the relief will last only about two days, but right now feels pretty good near the coast. and it is breezy just about everywhere, but especially near the coast where we have surface wind speeds ranging from 20 to over 30mph. in fact, gusts to 35mph right now at sfo. and you can see that the 24 hour temperature change is impressive. temperatures right now are about 9 to 19 degrees higher than they were at this time yesterday across the bay area. so here's the view from sutro tower under sunny sky, looking at sunny skies, looking at 69 degrees in san francisco. oakland 7883 hayward. we still have 90s low to mid to upper 90s at san jose and redwood city, 63 at half moon bay, blue sky and breezy conditions at the golden gate. other temperature readings right now 86 at petaluma, 92 at napa, but 104 at santa rosa and fairfield. concord and livermore are all at or above 100 degrees. these are the forecast headlines. today is the last day of triple digit heat. for a while, the last hurrah of this

triple digit heat. you might say a weekend outlook heat eases a bit briefly, and it's going to be nice and comfortable compared with what we've had the last couple of days. but excessive heat returns next week, several days of it. our current heat advisory, though, will expire at 11:00 tonight and the heat is going to linger well into the evening hours. so there is still an elevated risk of heat related illnesses. now, overnight, we'll see just a little bit of patchy fog near the coast and out over the bay overnight. low temperatures will be generally in the upper 50s to low and mid 60s. that's pretty mild for overnight readings. highs tomorrow under mainly sunny skies. low 60s at the coast, 69 here in san francisco, mid 70s around the bay shoreline and only low to mid 90s inland. tomorrow where today we had lots of 100 degree readings plus. but you can see that even as it gets cooler on sunday, which is going to feel very nice going into next week, we expect at least four consecutive days of triple digit heat in our inland areas, mid to upper 80s inland around the bay shoreline, rather
