the aftermath of a global outage is being felt in the bay area tonight, particularly by those who are trying to travel. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. boy, you talk about a mess. here's the latest on the crowdstrike chaos caused by a software issue that had a worldwide ripple effect and is still unfolding right now. the company said the problem was with an update for windows computers, and it identified and fixed it within a

matter of hours. but by then the damage was done. >> yes, the most visible impact is on air travel. more than 3100 flights were canceled and more than 11,000 others delayed. in the united states, chicago and atlanta, which are two of the biggest airports, were hit the hardest. businesses reported issues, as did hospitals and government services. >> 9-1-1 systems were disrupted in at least three states alaska, arizona and oregon. >> kaiser permanente said all of its hospital systems were affected. >> and were you waiting for a package? ups and fedex also reported disruptions, which led to delivery delays. >> the chaos at san francisco international airport started around this time last night when airlines were getting hit with the outage. thousands of passengers found themselves stranded, wondering when they'd be able to get to their final destination. it's been a long day for some. abc seven news reporter ryan curry joins us live from sfo tonight. how are things looking now, ryan? >> yeah, i'm a good evening. this was one of the busiest days

i've ever seen at the airport. so many people were confused, frustrated and tired after a long day of travel, of course. and some even telling me this was the worst travel day they've ever had. a long line of people waiting to get some clarity about their flights. the departure and arrival screens were as popular as a living room tv set, only a lot less fun frustration on the screens and in every terminal. >> we haven't seen the board on our flight, so we just presume that delta's being pretty honest with us and it's on time. >> joe and sharon bellino are headed back to atlanta, but they don't know if their red eye flight will even leave when it's supposed to. >> we haven't gotten any type of tax telling us it's going to be late, but my daughter, who's supposed to pick us up on the other end, seems to think it is. so we'll find out. i guess the crowdstrike outage forced many airlines to temporarily halt flights. >> what followed was a long day of delays and cancellations. >> we get to bradley international airport and in

connecticut and we're thinking, okay, we're early, we're going to get here, okay, no problem, and then delay and then we're stuck there. our flight was at 530 and then we leave at nine uh- 915, 920. >> tarek ibrahim is waiting at the delta baggage claim to see if his bags are even here. >> we're trying to figure that out because it was, you know, because they were like, oh, they booked us onto the flight for the next day. but we were on standby for this flight. so we were able to make it on. and, so i don't know, i don't even know. >> terminal two was full of people doing the same thing. the carousels were crowded, bags stacked up in the lobby. did delta offer any sort of like, refund or voucher? >> they said no, no refund, no vouchers. they said all we could do is rebook you onto the next flight. >> he is frustrated and tired, but he is happy. the long day is over. >> i hope i find my bag, get out of here. that's it >> and as you can see, it's a

very crowded day here at sfo. even right now at this point of the night. that's because so many flights got delayed up until this point in the night, and some even looking at the board, got pushed back to past midnight. even into the morning. so it's a long travel day that's not even over for some people, but for now, reporting live here at sfo. ryan curry, abc seven news okay, ryan, hope tomorrow is a little better. >> thanks so much. well, it departments were busy around the east bay today. maybe where you worked a different agencies dealt with the aftermath of the crowdstrike outage. each in its own way. employees this morning at alameda county superior court couldn't access case files. it was a different story for the city of antioch. it was able to avoid this whole mess. >> we usually now wait two weeks after an update, and that allows us the opportunity to ensure that that the update is sound and so in this instance, it wasn't. and so we were able to guard against that pretty smart oakland city hall had issues with employee computers.

>> the city says its 911 call lines remain open, and that their systems have now largely been restored, with both fire and police at near fully normal operations. the outage affected businesses a big and small, just about everywhere. people reported having problems at the dmv and stores like home depot, abc seven news, south bay reporter lauren martinez shows you how local hospitals, restaurants and banks are faring, the impact of crowdstrike's global outage will be felt in the bay area this weekend. >> inside oakland's michelin star restaurant, comey, their bar kitchen will be shut down through saturday. three chefs are stuck out of town, caught in travel chaos. reservations for this fine dining destination are usually booked a month in advance. kaiser is among the health systems across the u.s. affected. a statement to abc seven said, in part, we activated our national command center at 4:30 a.m. pacific time to address this incident. it went on to say all kaiser

permanente hospitals and medical offices remain open for care and service at the alameda county superior court, employees arrived to computers with blue screens. >> our focus was to get the criminal side up and going because those have strict deadlines and uh- when court hearings have to take place in the south bay, the santa clara county superior court announced friday they're experiencing technical disruptions, an alert on their website read. >> the court is still experiencing delays with our e-file and phone systems. as far as small businesses, employees at classic loot in san jose were uncertain what their workday would look like. >> we were freaked out in the morning and we weren't sure if anything was going to work, if we were going to be able to take purchases. so we were like, already trying to think of like plans of like, can we can only take cash. we can like direct people to the bank. >> luckily, their systems don't work off of microsoft. so they were not affected. >> but we did have some

customers come in who did have their businesses not working today. so they came in to shop around instead because they didn't they couldn't go to work. >> today, several banks are feeling the impact of the microsoft crowdstrike outage. some bank of america customers told us they were only able to withdraw a certain amount of cash. others told us they weren't able to deposit checks. >> actually, i didn't think about it. i just came and took care of the business. now i'm out. >> alonso hernandez had no problem depositing money, but feels for anyone still experiencing issues just take a deep breath. >> things come and go. >> they pass in the south bay. lauren martinez, abc seven news digital billboards at new york city's famous times square went blank as part of the global tech outage. >> local media outlets and social social media users shared images of the massive electronic screens, switched off the times square alliance says a handful of the more than 100 billboards crammed in the square were knocked offline. many people hadn't heard of crowdstrike until today. the company is a

cybersecurity firm founded in sunnyvale but now based in austin. it provides cloud security and cyber attack response. crowdstrike has worked with the us government on responding to global hacks and cyber espionage coming from russia, china and north korea. it was the first to issue an alert about russian interference in the 2016 election. crowdstrike stock fell 11% today as a result of the global computer outage. >> all right, let's stop for a moment. we'll continue to follow that story here on air and online to keep up with the latest developments, visit abc seven news.com or download the abc seven bay area app and enable the push alerts. okay, we're going to take a live look outside this friday night as we had another day of triple digit temperatures in parts of the bay area. >> so will they hang around? >> abc seven weather anchor spencer christian is here with a look at your 24 hour accuweather forecast. spencer okay, dan. >> and well, you know, we've been under a heat advisory the last couple of days. that advisory just expired about eight minutes ago, so it's still pretty warm as you look at the

current temperature readings and some of our inland areas, 89 degrees at brentwood, 83 at concord. but it is cooling down and that cooling will continue through the weekend. so here's our day planner for tomorrow, 7:00 tomorrow morning we'll have bright skies, but there will be some lingering low clouds, especially near the coast in the bay, temperatures ranging from 62 to 64 from bay to inland. by noon, we'll have some midday warming going on under mainly sunny skies, 70 degrees around the bay shoreline. 86 in the warmest inland areas. 4 p.m. the peak of our warming bright sunny skies, low to mid 90s in the warmest inland spots. mid 70s around the bay. low 60s at the coast and then by 7 p.m. as we approach sunset. bright skies about 82 degrees in the warmest spots inland, about 68 degrees around the bay shoreline down into the upper 50s. inland, there will be further cooling on sunday, but next week, well, the heat returns. i'll have the accuweather seven day forecast coming up a little bit later. >> dan okay, spencer, thanks very much. well, heads up here.

pg. e is warning it may have to cut power for safety reasons. this weekend. that's due to high winds and dry conditions. officials say the potential shut offs could affect 16,000 customers in six counties, including two here in the bay area. fewer than 500 customers in portions of alameda and contra costa counties have been notified. pg and e says the shutoffs could start tomorrow at 11 a.m. regional medical center in san jose is canceling plans to close its trauma, heart attack and stroke centers, but some people in the community say the fight for reliable medical care is not over yet. regional will change its designation from level two to a level three trauma center, which still allows for intensive trauma care. it is a potentially life saving victory today for east san jose residents, who say the attempt to shut down was a cost cutting measure by the hospital's parent company. >> when a corporation comes in

passengers finally made it to san francisco tonight after a really bizarre journey. an air india flight from delhi to san francisco got diverted to russia yesterday because of a problem with the plane. a ferry flight brought them back today. after a lengthy delay, family members gathered at the airport to welcome passengers from their long journey. >> appreciate air india for doing everything they did, seems like they got food. they got some rest. they couldn't lie down. obviously but they were on chairs for like 24 hours. >> how do you feel being home? good >> air india said the sfo team was prepared to help provide any help to passengers, including medical care, ground transport and onward travel connections, with plans to move to sacramento next season. >> the a's will let a large number of employees go, according to the sf chronicle. the team is giving the boot to as many as half of its non-baseball operations workers. that will include a range of jobs, especially in tickets,

stadium finance, marketing, sales, legal and community relations. they will all be out of work by the end of the season. october 31st. >> okay, let's check on our weather because it got quite warm today. >> it did. and there's a lot more that coming. spencer christian is here with the full forecast, but i guess spencer we get a cool down first. >> we do before that. next wave of heat arrives. dan we have some cooler weather coming our way. let's take a look at the satellite radar composite image. you can see high pressure, which brought us the wave of heat we had the last couple of days. sort of nudging to the east a little bit as a trough of low pressure sort of pushes in and brings us a little bit of cooling over the next couple of days. it'll be refreshing over the weekend. right now we're looking at generally calm wind, except at sfo, where we have 23 mile per hour gusts and although cooldown is on the way, it's still several degrees warmer all across the bay area, as you can see. then at this time last night. so the 24 hour warm up has been quite impressive. the current temperature readings are

these 59 degrees in san francisco, mid 60s at oakland and hayward, low to mid 70s at san jose and redwood city, 59 at half moon bay, looking down onto the bay from mount tam. a nice clear view at this hour of the night. 57 degrees at petaluma, 67 apiece at santa rosa and napa. we have mid 70s at fairfield and livermore. concord, 83 degrees. pretty warm at this hour of the night. these are our forecast headlines. we can cool down is on the way with bright skies and mild to warm conditions. heat returns next week with triple digit temperatures in our inland areas once again. but at the end of next week, we'll bring seasonal temperatures once again with another cooldown on the way. we have a coastal flood advisory in effect until 2 a.m. now. this is for locations right around san francisco bay and san pablo bay, and we're talking about minor flooding now, mainly on uh- roads and parks, and lots are in low lying areas. so not a major flood alert here. overnight conditions a few clouds around, especially near the coast and bay. overnight lows will be generally in the low 60s. so

pretty mild overnight, but a nice mild to warm day coming our way tomorrow under mainly sunny skies away from the coast. look for highs of 69. san francisco mid 70s generally around the bay shoreline. inland areas, especially in the north bay and inland east bay mainly low to mid 90s down to the south bay. highs will reach only into the 80s, so quite a change from what we've had the last couple of days. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. as you can see on sunday, it gets even cooler with inland highs in a really seasonal range only mid to upper 80s there some mid 70s low to mid 70s around the bay shoreline. but look at next week monday through thursday inland. highs at or above 100 degrees. and finally next friday it starts to cool down a little bit into the low 90s. but be prepared for lots of heat next week, and all the heat alerts and heat tips will always give you. stay hydrated. avoid overexposure. that sort of thing. take it easy, take it easy. that's it. >> yeah. thanks, spencer. >> okay, well, this year's aids walk is just two days away, and spencer just told us the weather will be quite nice. it's on sunday, july 21st at golden gate
